Compression Of Multilayered Composite Electrospun Scaffolds: A Novel Strategy To Rapidly Enhance Mechanical Properties And Three Dimensionality Of Bone Scaffolds, Parthasarathy A. Madurantakam, Isaac A. Rodriguez, Koyal Garg, Jennifer M. Mccool, Peter C. Moon, Gary L. Bowlin

Biomedical Engineering Publications

One major limitation of electrospun scaffolds intended for bone tissue engineering is their inferior mechanical properties. The present study introduces a novel strategy to engineer stiffer scaffolds by stacking multiple layers and cold welding them under high pressure. Electrospun polydioxanone (PDO) and PDO:nanohydroxyapatite (PDO:nHA) scaffolds (1, 2, or 4 layered stacks) were compressed either before or after mineralizing treatment with simulated body fluid (SBF). After two weeks in SBF, scaffolds were analyzed for total mineral content and stiffness by Alizarin red S and uniaxial tensile testing, respectively. Scaffolds were also analyzed for permeability, pore size, and fiber diameter. Results indicated …

Cultivating Intelligent Tutoring Cognizing Agents In Ill-Defined Domains Using Hybrid Approaches, Rania Hodhod Jan 2013

Cultivating Intelligent Tutoring Cognizing Agents In Ill-Defined Domains Using Hybrid Approaches, Rania Hodhod

Faculty Bibliography

Cognizing agents are those systems that can perceive information from the external environment and can adapt to the changing conditions of that environment. Along the adaptation process a cognizing agent perceives information about the environment and generates reactions. An intelligent tutoring cognizing agent should deal not only with the tutoring system’s world but also with the learner-it should infer and predict new information about the learner and tailor the learning process to fit this specific learner. This paper shows how intelligent tutoring cognizing agents can be cultivated in ill-defined domains using hybrid techniques instantiated in the two example agents AEINS-CA …

Latina Political Participation, Anna Sampaio Jan 2013

Latina Political Participation, Anna Sampaio

Ethnic Studies

Contemporary Latinas and Latinos constitute a growing political influence in American politics. Moreover, in 2000 Latinas/Latinos reached a demographic milestone, surpassing African Americans in becoming the largest ethnic minority group in the United States (see Ennis, et al. 2011 and Grieco and Cassidy 2001 under General Overviews). However, despite important political gains made over the past thirty-five years, Latinas and Latinos continue to experience significant structural and resource barriers to their political incorporation, resulting in enduring forms of marginalization for the population. Latinas specifically inherit a long history of political activism dating back to early resistance against US expansion both …

Why Hip-Hop Is Queer: Using Queer Theory To Examine Identity Formation In Rap Music, Silvia Galis-Menendez Jan 2013

Why Hip-Hop Is Queer: Using Queer Theory To Examine Identity Formation In Rap Music, Silvia Galis-Menendez

Honors Thesis Collection

Although many believe hip-hop is irredeemably misogynistic and homophobic, hip-hop actually provides a unique space for queer interpretations of identity. Rap music is a poetics and a politics in which construction of oppositional narratives and presentation and performances of race, gender, and sexuality is possible. The works of hip hop artists Azealia Banks, Frank Ocean, Las Krudas, and Big Freedia particularly illuminate the processes of identity formation and presentation. Using queerness to examine hip-hop, and using hip-hop to examine queerness demonstrates the significance of hip-hop as a cultural production and social movement.

The Intersection Of Culture And Cognition: A Comparison Of Common Core State Standards Argumentative Writing Responses Of Elementary-Aged Hispanic/Latino And European-Origin White Students, Erin O'Hara-Rines Jan 2013

The Intersection Of Culture And Cognition: A Comparison Of Common Core State Standards Argumentative Writing Responses Of Elementary-Aged Hispanic/Latino And European-Origin White Students, Erin O'Hara-Rines

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This exploratory study employed statistical analysis and response excerpts to locate points of intersection between culture and cognition in a comparison of argumentative writing work samples of 74 Oregon fourth and fifth grade Hispanic/Latino and European-origin White students. Major findings indicated that Hispanic/Latino students more often 1) employed a diffuse, recursive organizational style that may be related to traditional features of Mexican discourse, 2) utilized elements of indirect language, a feature that has been associated with collectivist cultures, and 3) incorporated narrative elements, echoing a cultural mode for connection, while White students more often 1) evidenced use of a sequential, …

An 'Other' Scene, An 'Other' Point Of View: France's Colonial Family Romance, Protée's Postcolonial Fantasies And Claire Denis' 'Screen' Memories, Levilson C. Reis Jan 2013

An 'Other' Scene, An 'Other' Point Of View: France's Colonial Family Romance, Protée's Postcolonial Fantasies And Claire Denis' 'Screen' Memories, Levilson C. Reis

Modern Languages & Cultures Faculty Scholarship

This article challenges the widely held view that in Chocolat/Chocolate (Denis, 1988) the female protagonist, named 'France', owns the point of view. It argues that the film rejects such an exclusive narrative mode, and invites the spectator to reinterpret the story through the perspectives of others, especially that of the houseboy Protée. Drawing on Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytical theories, this article re-examines three key flashback scenes (the mirror scene, the shower scene, and the big box-office scene), taking Protée's vantage point, while engaging with the para-text of Sartre's, Oyono's and Denis' own postcolonial views. The article finally shows that the …

Decolonization And Community Media: Fostering A Decolonial Imaginary In El Alto, Bolivia, Rebecca Jackson Jan 2013

Decolonization And Community Media: Fostering A Decolonial Imaginary In El Alto, Bolivia, Rebecca Jackson

Media and Cultural Studies Honors Projects

Radio Trono, a community radio in Bolivia, uses grassroots critical theory and participatory media to illuminate the influence the colonial matrix of power has on participant's bodies, daily lives, and imaginations. Corporal decolonization, the theory of decolonization developed by the collective that manages Radio Trono, focuses on the body as a site of liberation at multiple scales of geography, and links new bodily configurations to new imaginaries and possibilities for resistance to coloniality of power. This theory infuses Radio Trono's production process and content while the radio's presence in El Alto works to decolonize and democratize the city's media system.

On The Sleeve Of The Visual: Race As Face Value, Alessandra Raengo Jan 2013

On The Sleeve Of The Visual: Race As Face Value, Alessandra Raengo

Dartmouth College Press

In this work of critical theory, Black studies, and visual culture studies, the author reads race as a theory of the image. By placing emphasis on the surface of the visual as the repository of its meaning, race presents the most enduring ontological approach to what images are, how they feel, and what they mean. Having established her theoretical concerns, the author's eclectic readings of various artifacts of visual culture, fine arts, cinema, and rhetorical tropes provoke and destabilize readers' visual comfort zone, forcing them to recognize the unstated racial aspects of viewing and the foundational role of race in …

The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia, Kieu Anh Do, Xiaolin Xie Jan 2013

The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia, Kieu Anh Do, Xiaolin Xie

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The number of Asian American families is on the rise, making it 4.6% of the total US population. Asian American families are also a diverse group, comprising many different ancestries, cultural variations, and countries of origin. However, there remains a paucity of research focusing on Asian American Families. The media’s depiction of them as a Model Minority is doing a disservice to this population group. Because of this stereotype, many issues and challenges that this group encounters may not gain adequate attention. Some of these issues include acculturative stress, intimate partner violence, lack of a social support network, and intergenerational …

Chronic exposure to particulate matter air pollution is known to cause inflammation leading to respiratory- and cardiovascularrelated sickness and death. Mexico City Metropolitan Area children exhibit an early brain imbalance in genes involved in oxidative stress, inflammation, and innate and adaptive immune responses. Early dysregulated neuroinflammation, brain microvascular damage, production of potent vasoconstrictors, and perturbations in the integrity of the neurovascular unit likely contribute to progressive neurodegenerative processes. The accumulation of misfolded proteins coincides with the anatomical distribution observed in the early stages of both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. We contend misfolding of hyperphosphorylated tau (HPrc), alpha-synuclein, and beta-amyloid could …

Popular Accounting History: Evidence From Post-Enron Stories, Garry D. Carnegie, Christopher J. Napier Jan 2013

Popular Accounting History: Evidence From Post-Enron Stories, Garry D. Carnegie, Christopher J. Napier

Accounting Historians Journal

This study reviews the concept of popular history in the context of accounting history, drawing on evidence from post-Enron stories about corporate collapse and accounting and auditing failure. The study complements the work of Carnegie and Napier [2010], which focused on how professional accountants and their firms and organizations were portrayed in books about Enron and Arthur Andersen that were published during the period 2002 to 2005. These books can be characterized as popular histories, and the present paper illustrates how the scholarly work of academic accounting historians is given little attention by the authors of these post-Enron stories. It …

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Induce Human Microvascular Endothelial Cellular Effects In An Alveolar-Capillary Co-Culture With Small Airway Epithelial Cells, Brandi N. Snyder-Talkington, Diane Schwegler-Berry, Vincent Castranova, Yong Qian, Nancy L. Guo Jan 2013

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Induce Human Microvascular Endothelial Cellular Effects In An Alveolar-Capillary Co-Culture With Small Airway Epithelial Cells, Brandi N. Snyder-Talkington, Diane Schwegler-Berry, Vincent Castranova, Yong Qian, Nancy L. Guo

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Nanotechnology, particularly the use of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), is a rapidly growing discipline with implications for advancement in a variety of fields. A major route of exposure to MWCNT during both occupational and environmental contact is inhalation. While many studies showed adverse effects to the vascular endothelium upon MWCNT exposure, in vitro results often do not correlate with in vivo effects. This study aimed to determine if an alveolar-capillary co-culture model could determine changes in the vascular endothelium after epithelial exposure to MWCNT.

Methods

A co-culture system in which both human small airway epithelial cells and human microvascular …

Andragogy Around The World In K-20 Education: It Is All About Trust, John Henschke Jan 2013

Andragogy Around The World In K-20 Education: It Is All About Trust, John Henschke

Adult Education Faculty Works

The author's research in andragogy started in the late 1960s. More serious in-depth attempts were launched in 1997, just after Malcolm S. Knowles died - the author wanted to honor his legacy since he and his work in andragogy were influential in the author's life. The author's research yielded an instrument with the strongest factor being 'teacher trust of learners' - a belief that applies all the way through k-20 Education. This is found to be so in doctoral dissertations, overarching trust behaviors, and threaded through the literature surrounding trust. Trust is found to be congruent between the author's scholarship …

The National Muslim Forum Nepal: Experiences Of Conflict, Formations Of Identity, Megan Adamson Sijapati Jan 2013

The National Muslim Forum Nepal: Experiences Of Conflict, Formations Of Identity, Megan Adamson Sijapati

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

With Nepal's recent transition to state secularism, the politicization of Muslim religious identity has emerged with increasing vitality. One particular pan-Nepali Muslim organization, the Rastriya Muslim Mane Nepal (National Muslim Forum Nepal), offers a window into the complex relationship between national and religious identity that animates this politicization. Through analysis of the National Muslim Forum's earliest discourses, produced between 2005 and 2006, both immediately before and after the people's revolution that resulted in the declaration of Nepal as a secular state, this essay highlights the ways that experiences of conflict coupled with a national political transition shape and contribute to …

The Hybrid Spirit Animating Chinese Pentecostals In Malaysia, Eu Kit Lim Jan 2013

The Hybrid Spirit Animating Chinese Pentecostals In Malaysia, Eu Kit Lim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation interrogates the assertion in postcolonial scholarship, especially from the work of Homi Bhabha that the construction and performance of hybrid identities act as a form of resistance for marginalized communities against structures of oppression. While this study supports this assertion, it also critiques how hybridity fails to address issues of unequal power relations. This has led to an uncritical use of hybridity that reproduces the very idea of static identity which its proponents claim to transcend.

Through qualitative study of Chinese members of a Pentecostal church in Malaysia, this study argues that church members engage in "unequal belonging" …
