Explicit Instruction In Self-Regulatory Skills And Deliberate Practice, Kimberly Joy Gedde Jan 2013

Explicit Instruction In Self-Regulatory Skills And Deliberate Practice, Kimberly Joy Gedde

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

ABSTRACT The purpose of this investigation was to explore explicitly teaching self-regulation for musical practice. The study consisted of a pre-test, intervention, and post-test design in a case-study format. Three participants completed a pre-test practice task where they were asked to sight-read an excerpt of music, practice for 25 minutes and then perform the excerpt again. Following the pre-test participants completed five instructional sessions explicitly teaching them to self-regulate during musical practice using a cyclical model of component steps. Immediately following the five instructional sessions all participants completed a post-test practice task, which was identical to the task from the …

Group 3 Late Embryogenesis Abundant Proteins From Embryos Of Artemia Francisana : Molecular Characteristics, Expression And Function, Leaf Chandra Boswell Jan 2013

Group 3 Late Embryogenesis Abundant Proteins From Embryos Of Artemia Francisana : Molecular Characteristics, Expression And Function, Leaf Chandra Boswell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins are highly hydrophilic, intrinsically disordered proteins whose expression has been correlated with desiccation tolerance in anhydrobiotic organisms. Embryos of the brine shrimp, A. franciscana, contain high titers of group 3 LEA proteins during desiccation-tolerant stages such as diapause and pre-emergence development. Here I report the sequencing of three novel variants of AfrLEA3m mRNA (Afrlea3m_47, Afrlea3m_43 and Afrlea3m_29), whose deduced protein sequences are are predicted to localize to the mitochondrion. These mRNAs are very similar to Afrlea3m, but each has a stretch of sequence that is absent in at least one of the others. In addition …

The Creation Of "Voices In My Head," A One-Man Show, Anthony Michael Mcmurray Jan 2013

The Creation Of "Voices In My Head," A One-Man Show, Anthony Michael Mcmurray

LSU Master's Theses

The thesis assignment began with one simple question, “Can we conceptualize, compose, and create a one-man show, where we hold an audience’s attention, for no less than 30 minutes?” We were encouraged to find a piece that we could live with over the course of the next 9-12 months. Not wanting to carry around some heavy emotional weight, and knowing that I can’t take anything seriously for more than a month at a time without making fun of it, I went in the opposite direction of drama and dove head first towards the land of comedy. From the moment that …

Evolutionary And Ecological Dynamics Of Rapid Radiation Of Pocket Gophers (Thomomy's) In Mexico, Verity Lynn Mathis Jan 2013

Evolutionary And Ecological Dynamics Of Rapid Radiation Of Pocket Gophers (Thomomy's) In Mexico, Verity Lynn Mathis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding biodiversity is one of the driving foundations of evolutionary biology and researchers use a myriad of tools to uncover and understand the processes contributing to it. The evolutionary and ecological dynamics in a group of smooth-toothed pocket gophers, the Thomomys umbrinus species complex, is studied for this dissertation. This complex is distributed from south-central Arizona and southwestern New Mexico south to Veracruz, Mexico. The genetic complexity of T. umbrinus was initially discovered via allozymes and karyotypes, resulting in five genetic clades: three with one diploid number of chromosomes (2n = 76; two clades distributed in the Sierra Madre Occidental …

Large Deviations For Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations With Nonlinear Viscosities, Ming Tao Jan 2013

Large Deviations For Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations With Nonlinear Viscosities, Ming Tao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, a Wentzell-Freidlin type large deviation principle is established for the two-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations (SNSE's) with nonlinear viscosities. We fi_x000C_rst prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the two-dimensionalstochastic Navier-Stokes equations with nonlinear viscosities using the martingale problem argument and the method of monotonicity. By the results of Varadhan and Bryc, the large deviation principle (LDP) is equivalent to the Laplace-Varadhan principle (LVP) if the underlying space is Polish. Then using the stochastic control and weak convergence approach developed by Budhiraja and Dupuis, the Laplace-Varadhan principle for solutions of stochastic Navier-Stokesequations is obtained in appropriate function …

Lost In Translation : Algebraic Modeling In The Middle School Classroom, Danielle Denise Ricks Jan 2013

Lost In Translation : Algebraic Modeling In The Middle School Classroom, Danielle Denise Ricks

LSU Master's Theses

This study was conducted to investigate the disparity that seems to exist in students’ abilities to solve equations, solve word problems, and model word problems with algebraic equations. Over the course of fourteen-weeks, students enrolled in an advanced seventh grade mathematics course were given a series of algebra assignments, tasks, and surveys that focused on students’ abilities to solve and write algebraic equations. The results show that students are more competent in determining solutions for equations and simple word problems than modeling word problems with algebraic equations. Students were willing to exert substantial effort to use arithmetic procedures to find …

Topology And Shape Optimization Of Hydrodynamically–Lubricated Bearings For Enhanced Load-Carrying Capacity, Mohammad Fesanghary

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bearings are basic and essential components of nearly all machinery. They must be designed to work under different loads, speeds, and environments. Of all the performance parameters, load-carrying capacity (LCC) is often the most crucial design constraint. The objective of this research is to investigate different design methodologies that significantly improve the LCC of liquid-lubricated bearings. This goal can be achieved by either altering the surface texture or the bearing geometrical configuration. The methodology used here is based on mathematical topological/shape optimization algorithms. These methods can effectively improve the design performance while avoiding time-consuming trial-and-error design techniques. The first category …

Influencing The Confirmation Bias On A Matchmaker Task Through Manipulation Of The Feeling Of Rightness, Patrick Clinton Ledet Jan 2013

Influencing The Confirmation Bias On A Matchmaker Task Through Manipulation Of The Feeling Of Rightness, Patrick Clinton Ledet

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The confirmation bias occurs when an individual ignores potentially disconfirming evidence and gives greater attention to apparent confirming evidence. The confirmation bias is theorized to result from rapid, automatic and unconscious processing. Such processing generates decisions that are considered to be “good enough” to meet the demands of a situation. Although such judgments are guided by unconscious processing, the individual may have conscious awareness of the generated hypothesis while still failing to systematically consider important information. Previous attempts to counter the confirmation bias have focused on directly instructing individuals to use systematic decision making. This method has had some success …

Extending To Fashion Category: An Exploratory Study On An Auto Brand Extension, Langchao Zhang Jan 2013

Extending To Fashion Category: An Exploratory Study On An Auto Brand Extension, Langchao Zhang

LSU Master's Theses

Brand extension has been one of the most commonly used marketing strategies. Many industries use existing well-known brand names to launch new lines or categories to reduce the cost for creating awareness. Auto companies have been increasingly looking for opportunities of broadening their brand halo to gain more profit, while the billion-dollar global fashion industries have been seeking the chance of brand extensions from established durable brands. Previous research has examined the factors affecting consumers’ attitude toward brand extension, however, the majority of brand extensions are reportedly not successful. There are no known studies investigating the case of extending into …

Applying the principles of the Alexander Technique helps one achieve a harmonious psychophysical state, which results in greater ease, poise, and physical coordination in any activity, even the most demanding of virtuoso works for double bass. …

Essays On Credit Default Swaps And Debtor-Creditor Relationships, Cihan Uzmanoglu Jan 2013

Essays On Credit Default Swaps And Debtor-Creditor Relationships, Cihan Uzmanoglu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Over the last decade, markets for credit insurance have developed dramatically and credit default swaps (CDS) have become the instrument of choice when it comes to hedging credit risks. The expanded hedging opportunities CDS provide and the allied benefits of better risk-sharing notwithstanding, concerns over the economic role of CDS arise from their ability to engender “empty” creditors – joint holders of the bond and CDS, and the role such creditors play in distress situations. Financially distressed firms often restructure their debt through out-of-court renegotiations with creditors to avoid formal default. In addition to the going concern value of the …

Single-Crystal Metal Oxides And Supported Metal Nanoclusters As Model Catalyst Sytems, Matthew C. Patterson Jan 2013

Single-Crystal Metal Oxides And Supported Metal Nanoclusters As Model Catalyst Sytems, Matthew C. Patterson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We have investigated the morphology and electronic structure of two basic classes of systems: metal oxide surfaces that catalyze the formation of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) from aromatic precursors, and Au and Cu nanoparticles that may be suitable catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of CO or hydrogenation of CO2. First, we examine the adsorption behavior of phenol on rutile TiO2(110) and ultrathin films of alumina prepared on a NiAl(110) substrate. Electron paramagnetic resonance studies show that exposure of both γ-alumina and titania powder to phenol at 250°C results in the formation of persistent phenoxyl radicals. EELS studies of phenol …

A Calvinist View Of Visual Art In Seventeenth-Century Holland : The Iconography Of Esther In Post-Reformation Dutch Painting, Sarah Grafton Peaster Jan 2013

A Calvinist View Of Visual Art In Seventeenth-Century Holland : The Iconography Of Esther In Post-Reformation Dutch Painting, Sarah Grafton Peaster

LSU Master's Theses

The Book of Esther, found in the Old Testament, has been represented in a variety of ways throughout history. In a sweeping tale of love, honor, and sacrifice, the Jewish maiden queen, Esther, is a heroine to the oppressed. Dutch Protestants in the Golden Age felt a kinship to this subject, particularly after the Protestant Reformation and the new religious freedom gained in Holland during the sixteenth century, which continued in the seventeenth century. These men and women saw many parallels between Esther’s experience and their own, both as the covenant people of God and as the remnant preserved by …

Studying Mechanisms Of Ionizing Radiation Resistance In Bacteria: Evidence For Multiple Pathways, Kathiresan Selvam Jan 2013

Studying Mechanisms Of Ionizing Radiation Resistance In Bacteria: Evidence For Multiple Pathways, Kathiresan Selvam

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Our lab created ionizing radiation (IR) resistant populations of E. coli MG1655 through twenty cycles of exposure to IR and outgrowth. To identify the genetic alterations responsible for increased IR tolerance, a total of seven isolates from the evolved final population were re-sequenced. However, the individual isolates sequence analysis revealed wide variety of unique genomic alterations with little overlap between the seven isolates and therefore, did not reveal the clear picture of the mutations responsible for IR resistance. Our current research focused on distinguishing the relevant mutations from the non-relevant mutations that contribute to IR resistance by using two methods: …

Her Voice Has Life: The Myth Of Echo In Psychoanalysis And Deconstruction, And The Acoustic Vision Of A New Subjectivity, Christian Lacroix Mecham Jan 2013

Her Voice Has Life: The Myth Of Echo In Psychoanalysis And Deconstruction, And The Acoustic Vision Of A New Subjectivity, Christian Lacroix Mecham

LSU Master's Theses

Taking seriously Ovid’s claim that Echo’s voice has life, this thesis examines the use of the myth of Echo and Narcissus, as presented in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, in 20th century literature, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, especially as to how it pertains to the creation of the human subject. I argue in favor of John Hollander’s restoration of the trope of metalepsis, and show how that trope is connected to a variety of topics, including, but not limited to, the imagery of echo in Mark Z. Danielewski’s novel House of Leaves; how the myth relates to the Freudian notions of primary and secondary …

The Rhetorical Strategies Of Don Quixote And Sancho Panza, David T. Tarvin Jan 2013

The Rhetorical Strategies Of Don Quixote And Sancho Panza, David T. Tarvin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the rhetorical components of the famous novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. Cervantes’ novel continues to be celebrated around the world four hundred years later. His two main protagonists epitomize opposite virtues, but their love for one another, and the promise of an ínsula, creates a bond that overcomes their differences. Don Quixote, the mad knight, values lofty ideas idealized in chivalric romance. Conversely, Sancho, the simple squire, values tangible materials he can see and touch in his own life. While the two characters first appear to be contrary in nature, by the journey’s end, as …

Differentiation Of Voice Disorders Using Objective Parameters From Harmonic Waveform Modeling In High-Speed Digital Imaging, Aimee Elaine Perkins

LSU Master's Theses

High-speed digital imaging (HSDI) has recently become clinically available for the direct observation of vocal fold movement in the last 20 years. However, before it can become routinely used in the clinical setting, a universal means of objectively analyzing and interpreting the HSDI data must be established. In this study, preliminary data was gathered for five parameters used to objectively analyze vocal fold vibratory patterns observed with HSDI. The parameters investigated were established by Ikuma, Kunduk, and McWhorter (2012a) and were previously studied with a small sample (N=8) comparing pre and post-phonosurgical removal of benign lesions. The five parameters included …
