The Roles Of Deinococcus Radiodurans Dps-1 And Dps-2 In Nucleoid Organization And In Survival During Oxidative Stress, Khoa Huynh Nguyen
The Roles Of Deinococcus Radiodurans Dps-1 And Dps-2 In Nucleoid Organization And In Survival During Oxidative Stress, Khoa Huynh Nguyen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
DNA protection during starvation (Dps) proteins are important for bacterial oxidative stress responses. This study aims to understand the roles and characteristics of the two Dps homologs in Deinococcus radiodurans: Dps-1 and Dps-2. Dps-2 contains a predicted signal peptide and in vivo localization of Dps-2 reveals that its location is non-cytoplasmic. β-galactosidase assays show that the Dps-2 promoter is upregulated in the presence of H2O2 and the results from the DNA protection assay show that Dps-2 is able to protect DNA efficiently against reactive oxygen species (ROS). Dps-2 has a C-terminal extension that is needed for assembly into a dodecamer …
An Examination Of Middle School Band Students' Ability To Match Pitch Following Short-Term Vocal Technique Training, Abby Bush Lyons
An Examination Of Middle School Band Students' Ability To Match Pitch Following Short-Term Vocal Technique Training, Abby Bush Lyons
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine middle school band students’ ability to sing and play their instruments in tune following short-term vocal technique instruction. In a posttest-only design, individual participants listened to three-note stepwise sequences produced digitally and performed them in three ways—sung on the syllable /Zu/, sung on /Zi/, and played on the instrument. Performances were recorded and analyzed for cent deviation from equal-tempered tuning (reference A=440). Results showed a significant 3-way interaction among pitch direction, performance condition, and pitch, with the most inaccurate playing happening after the first time participants sang the pitch sequence. Singing accuracy, …

Automated Semantic Content Extraction From Images, Mahdi Arab Khazaeli
Automated Semantic Content Extraction From Images, Mahdi Arab Khazaeli
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this study, an automatic semantic segmentation and object recognition methodology is implemented which bridges the semantic gap between low level features of image content and high level conceptual meaning. Semantically understanding an image is essential in modeling autonomous robots, targeting customers in marketing or reverse engineering of building information modeling in the construction industry. To achieve an understanding of a room from a single image we proposed a new object recognition framework which has four major components: segmentation, scene detection, conceptual cueing and object recognition. The new segmentation methodology developed in this research extends Felzenswalb's cost function to include …

Snap Use Among Older Adults, Jennifer R. Geiger
Snap Use Among Older Adults, Jennifer R. Geiger
LSU Master's Theses
Older adults participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at much lower rates than the general population. Possible explanations for this disparity include stigma, lack of information, and lack of transportation. However, past research focusing on SNAP use among older adults is limited and utilizes age cohorts in their analyses that may not accurately reflect actual age differences in SNAP participation. This study explored four different models of age categorizations as they relate to SNAP participation rates among older adults over 55. Using a sample of 10,116 from the nationally representative Health and Retirement Study (HRS), the research used …
Investigation Of The Role Of Putative Inorganic Carbon Transporters In The Carbon Dioxide Concentrating Mechanisms Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Bratati Mukherjee
Investigation Of The Role Of Putative Inorganic Carbon Transporters In The Carbon Dioxide Concentrating Mechanisms Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Bratati Mukherjee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Photosynthetic microalgae optimize the utilization of inorganic carbon by active uptake and concentration of inorganic carbon (Ci) around the carbon-fixing enzyme Rubisco. This process, mostly induced under limiting carbon conditions is called the Carbon Concentrating Mechanism or CCM. The photosynthetic green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii serves as an excellent model organism for the study of eukaryotic CCMs. However, unlike the prokaryotic cyanobacterial CCM, which has a well-characterized Ci uptake system, the Ci uptake and transport system of the C. reinhardtii CCM is not well understood. Since CO2 is a small neutral molecule, it is believed to be able to passively diffuse …
Complex Formation And Regulation Of Escherichia Coli Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase, Tyler Craig Broussard
Complex Formation And Regulation Of Escherichia Coli Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase, Tyler Craig Broussard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Acetyl-CoA carboxylase is a biotin-dependent, multifunctional enzyme that catalyzes the first committed step in fatty acid synthesis. The Escherichia coli enzyme is composed of a homodimeric biotin carboxylase, biotinylated biotin carboxyl carrier protein (BCCP), and an α2β2 heterotetrameric carboxyltransferase. Catalysis by acetyl-CoA carboxylase proceeds via two half-reactions. In the first half-reaction, biotin carboxylase catalyzes the ATP-dependent carboxylation of biotin, which is covalently attached to BCCP, to form carboxybiotin. In the second half-reaction, carboxyltransferase transfers the carboxyl group from carboxybiotin to acetyl-CoA to form malonyl-CoA. All biotin-dependent carboxylases are proposed to have a two-site ping-pong mechanism where the …

Vagrant Masculinity : A Process Of Masculine Self-Conceptualization In Formerly Incarcerated Black Men, Le'brian Alexander Patrick
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitative study explores the reorientation of masculine identities of formerly incarcerated Black men. Analysis is based on 20 in-depth interviews with 17 former inmates from the Louisiana prison system. This research investigates the impact of incarceration on the construction of masculinity. I explore the processes by which formerly imprisoned African American men construct, negotiate, and experience masculinity. My findings present how the way these men define masculinity and see themselves post-incarceration is influenced by not only their prison experience, but also by the reentry programs that they are affiliated. These men’s identities have been reformulated post-incarceration and are profoundly …
A Microfluidic Bacteria Culturing Device With Maldi Mass Spectrometry Detection, Pratap Reddy Machavaram Siva
A Microfluidic Bacteria Culturing Device With Maldi Mass Spectrometry Detection, Pratap Reddy Machavaram Siva
LSU Master's Theses
A novel microfluidic device was developed for bacterial cell culturing using mass spectrometry as the detector. One of the challenges in proteomics is to achieve high sensitivity in the identification of proteins in complex samples with widely varying concentrations. The main limitations for proteomic studies are relatively slow and labor-intensive steps such as cell culturing and protein digestion of small sample quantities. Microfluidics is a promising approach to increase throughput and to reduce the time-consuming steps that are necessary for proteomics. When an analytical detection method is combined with microfluidics it can overcome limitations that are important in the analysis …

"What Do Separate And Unequal Schools Look Like In The 21st Century? The Legacy Of State Sponsored Racial Segregation In The South", Jerel Williams
LSU Master's Theses
The vast majority of schools that have been subject to desegregation orders are located in the South. The official levels of state sponsored segregation by southern governments made the South unique. The South was a distinctive region when it came to racial brutality and resistance to racial integration. The American South is where the battle for school integration was fought with figures like George Wallace pledging segregation forever. What impact does the history of segregation have on southern schools today in relation to racial gaps in our education system? This analysis takes a look at the impact of historic state …

LSU Master's Theses
Biomass gasification and subsequent conversion to liquid hydrocarbons using Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is a promising source of energy in today’s scenario when the focus has shifted from conventional fuels to alternate sources of energy. Biomass derived syngas is different from other sources of syngas such as steam reforming of methane followed by water gas shift, in terms of H2/CO ratio. Biomass syngas is usually hydrogen deficient and contains various impurities which need to be removed prior to Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis. Syngas derived from biomass also differs significantly with the different sources of biomass, gasification process and the cleanup conditions it is subjected …

Bayesian Inference Application To Burglary Detection, Ishan Singh Bhale
Bayesian Inference Application To Burglary Detection, Ishan Singh Bhale
LSU Master's Theses
Real time motion tracking is very important for video analytics. But very little research has been done in identifying the top-level plans behind the atomic activities evident in various surveillance footages [61]. Surveillance videos can contain high level plans in the form of complex activities [61]. These complex activities are usually a combination of various articulated activities like breaking windshield, digging, and non-articulated activities like walking, running. We have developed a Bayesian framework for recognizing complex activities like burglary. This framework (belief network) is based on an expectation propagation algorithm [8] for approximate Bayesian inference. We provide experimental results showing …
The Shoulder Suspension Of Bipedal Humans And The Head Suspension Of Quadrupedal Cats : A Reconstruction Of Macroevolutionary Changes Of Complex Systems Based On Nautral Experiments, Comparative Anatomy, And Biomechanical Analyses Of Extant Organisms, Michelle L. Osborn
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The biological processes in macroevolutionary transformations, which result in the origin of new species and supraspecific taxa, are not directly observable in organisms with long reproductive generations and need to be extrapolated and reconstructed from physiological, anatomical, and microevolutionary processes. This dissertation reconstructs the anatomical and biomechanical changes that affected the head-neck-shoulder apparatus during the macroevolutionary transformation of a quadrupedal mammal to a bipedal one by studying two model organisms, namely the human and the cat. I hypothesize that the anatomical differences in the head-neck-shoulder apparatus of the two organisms are caused by different force regimes that act on them. …

Gene Set Based Ensemble Methods For Cancer Classification, William Evans Duncan
Gene Set Based Ensemble Methods For Cancer Classification, William Evans Duncan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Diagnosis of cancer very often depends on conclusions drawn after both clinical and microscopic examinations of tissues to study the manifestation of the disease in order to place tumors in known categories. One factor which determines the categorization of cancer is the tissue from which the tumor originates. Information gathered from clinical exams may be partial or not completely predictive of a specific category of cancer. Further complicating the problem of categorizing various tumors is that the histological classification of the cancer tissue and description of its course of development may be atypical. Gene expression data gleaned from micro-array analysis …
