Neonatal Epinephrine: Reducing Calculation Errors, Gaye Rotramel

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Tuesday, November 19, 2013:

Background: Epinephrine calculation errors during neonatal resuscitation of low birth weight and very low birth weight babies can significantly affect outcomes in terms of mortality and morbidity. An extensive review of literature concluded that medication errors in the calculation of Epinephrine during resuscitation can occur when providers rely on memory, lack access to needed information, safety techniques or standardized procedures (Benner, Sheets, Uris, Malloch, Schwed, & Jamison, 2002; Karlsen, 2006).

Methodology: A quantitative quasi-experimental pilot research study measured the effectiveness of a researcher-designed Epi Chart, a pre-calculated intravenous and endotracheal Epinephrine dosage chart, …

Discovering Real-World Usage Scenarios For A Multimodal Math Search Interface, Keita Del Valle Wangari Dec 2013

Discovering Real-World Usage Scenarios For A Multimodal Math Search Interface, Keita Del Valle Wangari

Theses

To use math expressions in search, current search engines require knowing expression names or using a structure editor or string encoding (e.g., LaTeX) to enter expressions. This is unfortunate for people who are not math experts, as this can lead to an "intention gap" between the math query they wish to express, and what the interface will allow. min is a search interface that supports drawing expressions on a canvas using a mouse/touch, keyboard and images. We designed a user study to examine how the multimodal interface of min changes search behavior for mathematical non-experts, and discover real-world …

Network Interdependency Modeling For Risk Assessment On Built Infrastructure Systems, Vhance V. Valencia Dec 2013

Network Interdependency Modeling For Risk Assessment On Built Infrastructure Systems, Vhance V. Valencia

Theses and Dissertations

As modern infrastructures become more interconnected, the decision-making process becomes more difficult because of the increased complexity resulting from infrastructure interdependencies. Simulation and network modeling provide a way to understand system behavior as a result of interdependencies. One area within the asset management literature that is not well covered is infrastructure system decay and risks associated with that decay. This research presents an enhanced version of Haimes' input-output inoperability model (IIM) in the analysis of built infrastructure systems. Previous applications of the IIM characterized infrastructure at the national level utilizing large economic databases. This study develops a three-phased approach that …

Solving Word Problems: As Easy As Pies!, Mary Jane Heater, Lori A. Howard, Ed Linz Dec 2013

Solving Word Problems: As Easy As Pies!, Mary Jane Heater, Lori A. Howard, Ed Linz

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

Many students are challenged when tasked to complete a word problem. While they may know the procedural steps to solve an equation, translating a word problem into an appropriate equation and producing a solution may often cause students to become confused or unwilling to try. This article provides a potential solution for teachers by discussing the use of a simple mnemonic tool to help organize the process. Mnemonics are a useful and effective strategy to help students with learning disabilities remember information and process steps. In the strategy presented, the mnemonic PIES is used to describe a 4-step process for …

A major sensor in these devices is the tri-axial accelerometer originally included for screen rotation and advanced gaming. …

“A Power Beyond The Reach Of Any Magic”: Mythology In Harry Potter, Daniella Rizza Fcrh '11 Dec 2013

“A Power Beyond The Reach Of Any Magic”: Mythology In Harry Potter, Daniella Rizza Fcrh '11

The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal

J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter novels have over the last decade become a worldwide phenomenon, but why? It is perhaps because of the mythical elements that underlie Harry’s story, particularly the myths of the child and the hero. Comparing the Potter novels to works by mythological theorists Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, it is clear how Rowling both uses and updates traditional mythological structures and elements in the novels. The Harry Potter novels both incorporate the standard myths of the child and the hero, which accounts for the series’ immense ability to grab the reader, and update these myths, making Harry’s …

Attitudes Towards Immigration Reform In The United States: The Importance Of Neighborhoods, Noelle Makhoul Fcrh '12 Dec 2013

Attitudes Towards Immigration Reform In The United States: The Importance Of Neighborhoods, Noelle Makhoul Fcrh '12

The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal

Americans are greatly divided over immigration reform. Public opinion literature provides multiple explanations for these attitudinal differences. One contention in the literature is that the amount of ethnic diversity in one’s neighborhood affects mass attitudes towards immigration reform. Within this literature, some scholars argue that ethnic diversity triggers more negative attitudes towards immigration. Others posit that ethnic diversity is associated with positive attitudes towards immigration. In this paper, I seek to contribute to this debate by exploring the role of ethnic diversity in one’s neighborhood in shaping public attitudes toward immigration reform. This study is based upon semi-structured interviews with …

Spatio-Temporal Visual Information Analysis For Moving Object Detection And Retrieval In Video Sequences, Dianting Liu Dec 2013

Spatio-Temporal Visual Information Analysis For Moving Object Detection And Retrieval In Video Sequences, Dianting Liu

Open Access Dissertations

The development of the Internet makes the number of online videos increase dramatically, which brings new demands to the video search engines for automatic retrieval and classification. We propose an unsupervised moving object detection and retrieval framework by exploiting and analyzing spatio-temporal visual information in the video sequences. The motivation is to use visual content information to estimate the locations of the moving objects in the spatio-temporal domain. Compared with the existing approaches, our proposed detection algorithm is unsupervised. It does not need to train models for specific objects. Furthermore, it is suitable for the detection of unknown objects. Therefore, …

Advanced Bathymetry Retrieval From Swell Patterns In High-Resolution Sar Images, Fernando José M. Monteiro Dec 2013

Advanced Bathymetry Retrieval From Swell Patterns In High-Resolution Sar Images, Fernando José M. Monteiro

Open Access Theses

We present an enhanced technique to retrieve underwater topography in coastal areas from swell refraction patterns in high-resolution spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. From a SAR scene with swell patterns propagating shoreward, we compute the peak wavelength and wave direction of each sub-scene; we then obtain depth estimates via the linear dispersion relationship, as long as the wave period is known. Compared to previously presented depth retrieval methods based on the same principles, the innovation of our technique consists of implementing a modulation transfer function (MTF) to account for the dependence of the strength of radar signatures of ocean …

The Influence Of Snowmobile Trails On Coyote Movements During Winter In High-Elevation Landscapes, Eric M. Gese, Jennifer L. Burghardt Dowd, Lise M. Aubry Dec 2013

The Influence Of Snowmobile Trails On Coyote Movements During Winter In High-Elevation Landscapes, Eric M. Gese, Jennifer L. Burghardt Dowd, Lise M. Aubry

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Competition between sympatric carnivores has long been of interest to ecologists. Increased understanding of these interactions can be useful for conservation planning. Increased snowmobile traffic on public lands and in habitats used by Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) remains controversial due to the concern of coyote (Canis latrans) use of snowmobile trails and potential competition with lynx. Determining the variables influencing coyote use of snowmobile trails has been a priority for managers attempting to conserve lynx and their critical habitat. During 2 winters in northwest Wyoming, we backtracked coyotes for 265 km to determine how varying snow characteristics influenced coyote movements; …

Integrating Human Omics Data To Prioritize Candidate Genes., Yong Chen, Xuebing Wu, Rui Jiang Dec 2013

Integrating Human Omics Data To Prioritize Candidate Genes., Yong Chen, Xuebing Wu, Rui Jiang

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: The identification of genes involved in human complex diseases remains a great challenge in computational systems biology. Although methods have been developed to use disease phenotypic similarities with a protein-protein interaction network for the prioritization of candidate genes, other valuable omics data sources have been largely overlooked in these methods.

METHODS: With this understanding, we proposed a method called BRIDGE to prioritize candidate genes by integrating disease phenotypic similarities with such omics data as protein-protein interactions, gene sequence similarities, gene expression patterns, gene ontology annotations, and gene pathway memberships. BRIDGE utilizes a multiple regression model with lasso penalty to …

Translation And Transcription Of A Passage From The Baduem Manuscript: An Eighteenth-Century Portuguese Embassy To China, Annalyn Beus Dec 2013

Translation And Transcription Of A Passage From The Baduem Manuscript: An Eighteenth-Century Portuguese Embassy To China, Annalyn Beus

Theses and Dissertations

This project is a diplomatic transcription and English translation of a passage from an 18-century manuscript that chronicles a remarkable Portuguese embassy to China (Macau). The embassy embarked from Lisbon in February 1752, sailing in a luxuriously outfitted ship (Nossa Senhora da Conceição e Lusitânia Grande), in convoy with a warship (Nossa Senhora das Brotas). The English translation is important because it makes the account accessible to scholars who lack familiarity with Portuguese. This voyage to China is remarkable in light of the long history of maritime loss by the Portuguese. Although the normal projected loss of life on this route …

Lee Harvey Oswald, The Patsy, Donald E. Wilkes Jr. Dec 2013

Lee Harvey Oswald, The Patsy, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Popular Media

Many articles in the print and electronic media marking the passage of a half century since the tragic murder of our 35th president also take the view that it was Oswald who shot President Kennedy. One article is entitled “Why’d Oswald Do It?,” while the subtitle of another references “Lee Harvey Oswald’s bizarre path after killing JFK.” The authors of many of these articles contend that Oswald was the lone assassin and regard the case as closed (although some of them admit that Oswald’s motive is unknown). Other authors believe, like John Kerry, that Oswald may have acted with …

Hoyle State And Rotational Features In Carbon-12 Within A No-Core Shell-Model Framework, Alison C. Dreyfuss, Kristina D. Launey, Tomáš Dytrych, Jerry P. Draayer, Chairul Bahri

Faculty Publications

By using only a fraction of the model space extended beyond current no-core shell-model limits and a many-nucleon interaction with a single parameter, we gain additional insight within a symmetry-guided shell-model framework, into the many-body dynamics that gives rise to the ground state rotational band together with phenomena tied to alpha-clustering substructures in the low-lying states in 12C, and in particular, the challenging Hoyle state and its first 2+ and 4+ excitations. For these states, we offer a novel perspective emerging out of no-core shell-model considerations, including a discussion of associated nuclear deformation and matter radii. This, in turn, provides …
