Controls Of Phosphorus Loading And Transport In The Cuyahoga River Of Northeastern Ohio, Usa, Fasong Yuan, Jaime A. Quellos, Chaojun Fan

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

An urban stream differs from a natural stream in that it commonly contains anthropogenic nutrients from a variety of diffuse and point sources (e.g., urban runoff, industrial and municipal effluents). The Cuyahoga River as one of such stream systems receives on average 30% of water from over a dozen wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and exports over 300 Mg/yr of total phosphorus (TP) into Lake Erie. Municipal effluents account for at least two thirds of the TP loading and 90% of the effluent TP is in the form of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), i.e., the highly bioavailable form in aquatic ecosystems. …

Optimizing Dns Server Selection, Zheng Wang, Rui Wang Nov 2013

Optimizing Dns Server Selection, Zheng Wang, Rui Wang

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In DNS zone delegation, the NS resource records of the delegated domain appear in both the parent and child zones, which complicates the domain name resolution procedure especially for server selection. In this paper, we investigate the recursive resolution mechanism for the delegated domain and the necessary operations. As there are no specifications for such resolution, we provide some recommendations such as NS record substitution mechanism. Furthermore, we analyze the delegation impacts on server selection as the NS records are obtained from both parent and child zone. We propose an integrated sever selection procedure to handle the lame delegation and …

A Topic Detection Approach Through Hierarchical Clustering On Concept Graph, Xiaohui Huang, Xiaofeng Zhang, Yunming Ye, Shengchun Deng, Xutao Li

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Topic detection and tracking (TDT) algorithms have long been developed for the discovery of topics. However, most existing TDT algorithms suffer from paying less attention to: (1) temporal distance between a pair of topics; (2) the mutual effect between highly correlated topic terms. In this paper, we proposed a novel topic detection approach by applying hierarchical clustering on the constructed concept graph (HCCG), which is able to solve aforementioned shortcomings simultaneously. In this approach, the concept is first defined as well as the concept behavior curve. Then, the temporal graph is constructed with concept as vertexes and connected by the …

Video Forensic Marking Algorithm Using Peak Position Modulation, Jihah Nah, Jongweon Kim, Jaeseok Kim

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Forensic marking, a type of watermarking, is an efficient means of detecting copyright violation and tracing unauthorized access to digital content. In this paper, a new video forensic marking algorithm is proposed which uses peak position modulation (PPM) and can embed sufficient information to trace an illegal distributor. PPMuses the positions of correlation peaks, which are modulated by user information. Furthermore, a forensic mark is embedded into a 2-level 3D discrete wavelet transform (DWT) domain. Experimental results show the robustness against various attack and the capacity improvement of proposed algorithm.

Modeling Based On Elman Wavelet Neural Network For Class-D Power Amplifiers, Li Wang, Jie Shao, Yaqin Zhong, Weisong Zhao, Reza Malekian

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In Class-D Power Amplifiers (CDPAs), the power supply noise can intermodulate with the input signal, manifesting into power-supply induced intermodulation distortion (PS-IMD) and due to the memory effects of the system, there exist asymmetries in the PS-IMDs. In this paper, a new behavioral modeling based on the Elman Wavelet Neural Network (EWNN) is proposed to study the nonlinear distortion of the CDPAs. In EWNN model, the Morlet wavelet functions are employed as the activation function and there is a normalized operation in the hidden layer, the modification of the scale factor and translation factor in the wavelet functions are ignored …

Fpga Design For Pseudorandom Number Generator Based On Chaotic Iteration Used In Information Hiding Application, Jacques M. Bahi, Xiaole Fang, Christophe Guyeux, Laurent Larger

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Lots of researches indicate that the inefficient generation of random numbers is a significant bottleneck for information communication applications. Therefore, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is developed to process a scalable fixed-point method for random streams generation. In our previous researches, we have proposed a technique by applying some well-defined discrete chaotic iterations that satisfy the reputed Devaney’s definition of chaos, namely chaotic iterations (CI). We have formerly proven that the generator with CI can provide qualified chaotic random numbers. In this paper, this generator based on chaotic iterations is optimally redesigned for FPGA device. By doing so, the generation …

Cooperative Struggle: Re-Framing Intercultural Conflict In The Management Of Sino-American Joint Ventures, Kathleen J. Krone, Sarah Steimel Nov 2013

Cooperative Struggle: Re-Framing Intercultural Conflict In The Management Of Sino-American Joint Ventures, Kathleen J. Krone, Sarah Steimel

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Sino-American economic joint ventures are most often studied through a lens of technical rationality that typically emphasizes organizational efficiency, reduces culture to a manageable resource, and views conflict as discrete disruptions requiring efficient handling. Here, we conceptualize Sino-American business partnerships as sites of struggle where co-managers' accounts of intercultural disagreements reveal friction around action, voice, interests, and identity. We propose cooperative struggle as a critical management practice for working creatively with the multiple forms of difference that arise in this organizational form.

Global Health Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Wealth disparities in child developmental outcomes are well documented in developed countries. We sought to (1) describe the extent of wealth-based neurocognitive development disparities and (2) examine potential mediating factors of disparities among a population-based cohort of children in rural Nepal.

METHODS: We investigated household wealth-based differences in intellectual, executive and motor function of n = 1692 children aged between 7 and 9 years in Nepal. Using linear mixed models, wealth-based differences were estimated before and after controlling for child and household demographic characteristics. We further examined wealth-based differences adjusted for three sets of mediators: child nutritional status, home …

A Monte Carlo Comparison Of Robust Manova Test Statistics, Holmes Finch, Brian French Nov 2013

A Monte Carlo Comparison Of Robust Manova Test Statistics, Holmes Finch, Brian French

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) is a popular statistical tool in the social sciences, allowing for the comparison of mean vectors across groups. MANOVA rests on three primary assumptions regarding the population: (a) multivariate normality, (b) equality of group population covariance matrices and (c) independence of errors. When these assumptions are violated, MANOVA does not perform well with respect to Type I error and power. There are several alternative test statistics that can be considered including robust statistics and the use of the structural equation modeling (SEM) framework. This simulation study focused on comparing the performance of the P test …

A Comparison Between Biased And Unbiased Estimators In Ordinary Least Squares Regression, Ghadban Khalaf Nov 2013

A Comparison Between Biased And Unbiased Estimators In Ordinary Least Squares Regression, Ghadban Khalaf

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

During the past years, different kinds of estimators have been proposed as alternatives to the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimator for the estimation of the regression coefficients in the presence of multicollinearity. In the general linear regression model, Y = Xβ + e, it is known that multicollinearity makes statistical inference difficult and may even seriously distort the inference. Ridge regression, as viewed here, defines a class of estimators of β indexed by a scalar parameter k. Two methods of specifying k are proposed and evaluated in terms of Mean Square Error (MSE) by …

Discriminating Between Generalized Exponential Distribution And Some Life Test Models Based On Population Quantiles, B. Srinivasa Rao, R. R. L Kantam Nov 2013

Discriminating Between Generalized Exponential Distribution And Some Life Test Models Based On Population Quantiles, B. Srinivasa Rao, R. R. L Kantam

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A test statistic based on population quantiles using sample order statistics is suggested. The quantiles of the test statistics are evaluated for generalized exponential distribution. Similar test statistic based on moments of sample order statistic is referred and the proposed test formula is compared with it. Between the pairs of the above models it is established that the test formula proposed by us is more effective and useful than the formula based on the moments of order statistics as developed by Sultan (2007).

A Generalized Class Of Estimators For Finite Population Variance In Presence Of Measurement Errors, Prayas Sharma, Rajesh Singh Nov 2013

A Generalized Class Of Estimators For Finite Population Variance In Presence Of Measurement Errors, Prayas Sharma, Rajesh Singh

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The problem of estimating the population variance is presented using auxiliary information in the presence of measurement errors. The estimators in this article use auxiliary information to improve efficiency and assume that measurement error is present both in study and auxiliary variable. A numerical study is carried out to compare the performance of the proposed estimator with other estimators and the variance per unit estimator in the presence of measurement errors.

Testing The Assumption Of Non-Differential Misclassification In Case-Control Studies, Tze-San Lee, Qin Hui Nov 2013

Testing The Assumption Of Non-Differential Misclassification In Case-Control Studies, Tze-San Lee, Qin Hui

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

One of the not yet solved issues regarding the misclassification in case-control studies is whether the misclassification rates are the same for both cases and controls. Currently, a common practice is to assume that the rates are the same, that is, the non-differential misclassification assumption. However, it has been suspected that this assumption may not be valid in practical applications. Unfortunately, no test is available so far to test the validity of the non-differential misclassification assumption. A method is presented to test the validity of non-differential misclassification assumption in case-control studies with 2 × 2 tables when validation data are …

Cellular Automata For The Flow Simulations On The Earth Surface, Optimization Computation Process, Juraj Cirbus, Michal Podhoranyi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The spreading of water across terrain is not a simple and isolated process. The spread of water is a part of the more general water cycle. Many commercial software exist for water modelling, but their correct use requires a considerable knowledge of water modelling, and about the study area. Using the relatively simple principle of cellular automata (CA) it is possible to obtain results which compare well with real measurements. This article describes using a CA for simulating the spreading of liquid, using comparatively simple rules and conditions which include several factors affecting the spreading of water such as slope, …

Finally, it simulated a single units attraction, …

Quantum Modal Structure Of A Trapped Atom In Evanescent Laguerre- Gaussian Beams, Saud A. Al-Awfi Nov 2013

Quantum Modal Structure Of A Trapped Atom In Evanescent Laguerre- Gaussian Beams, Saud A. Al-Awfi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We investigate the quantum behavior of the neutral atoms trapped by the two-dimensional potential due to an optical vortex. Our model is based on the pure optical trapped of sodium atoms in evanescent Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) light. If the LG light is tuned to the blue of the atomic resonance line, atoms will experience repulsive potential, which push them away from the high intensity region to the low intensity region. The parameters selected in this evaluation are taken to guarantee that atoms are sufficiently cooled below the recoil limit to permit several quasi harmonics trapped quantum states.
