These two massive volumes comprise the proceedings of a conference of the same name held at the University of Vienna in February 2008. The purpose of the conference, and the proceedings volumes, in the words of the editors, is “to integrate the Dead Sea Scrolls fully into the various disciplines that benefit from the discovery of these very important texts” (vol. 1, p. x). As a result, the papers contained in these volumes are wideranging, written by specialists in the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) as well as in other disciplines. The volumes will thus appeal to scholars in a variety …

Horizontal Vs. Vertical Connectivity In Caribbean Reef Corals: Identifying Potential Sources Of Recruitment Following Disturbance, Xaymara M. Serrano Nov 2013

Horizontal Vs. Vertical Connectivity In Caribbean Reef Corals: Identifying Potential Sources Of Recruitment Following Disturbance, Xaymara M. Serrano

Open Access Dissertations

The extent to which reefs are effectively connected to one another, and their potential to serve as sources of larval replenishment following disturbance, are topics of considerable interest in contemporary reef science. To date, most assessments of reef connectivity have emphasized long-distance horizontal dispersal of propagules from one shallow reef to another. The extent of short-distance vertical connectivity, however, has been largely unquantified. To fill this gap in knowledge, I developed DNA microsatellite loci for two Caribbean depth-generalist coral species with different life-history reproductive strategies (Montastraea cavernosa and Porites astreoides), and assessed connectivity in >1,200 coral samples collected from 3 …

Certain robot missions need to perform predictably in a physical environment that may only be poorly characterized in advance. We have previously developed an approach to establishing performance guarantees for behaviorbased controllers in a process-algebra framework. We extend that work here to include random variables, and we show how our prior results can be used to generate a Dynamic Bayesian Network for the coupled system of program and environment model. Verification is reduced to a filtering problem for this network. Finally, we present validation results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the verification of a multiple waypoint robot mission using this …

The Power Of Politics For Zambia’S Public Sector Unions: A Case Study Of The 2013 Nursing Strikes, Andrew Stawasz, Thaddeus Talbot Nov 2013

The Power Of Politics For Zambia’S Public Sector Unions: A Case Study Of The 2013 Nursing Strikes, Andrew Stawasz, Thaddeus Talbot

Zambia Social Science Journal

Recent pay reform efforts in Zambia have sought to generate more competitive wages and benefits for workers in the public sector. However, these efforts have been characterised by inconsistent policy decisions during wage negotiations. Such decisions produce distortions in the pay structure that result in industrial unrest from unions in the public sector. Previous literature has not examined how public sector unions influence these outcomes in Zambia. This article examines factors that affect public sector unions’ influence in Zambia. Seven factors were identified after analysing the 2013 wage negotiations and subsequent nurses’ strikes at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) as …

Nonlinearity, Heterogeneity And Unobserved Effects In The Co2-Income Relation For Advanced Countries, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Antonio Musolesi Nov 2013

Nonlinearity, Heterogeneity And Unobserved Effects In The Co2-Income Relation For Advanced Countries, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Antonio Musolesi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We study long run carbon emissions-income relationships for advanced countries grouped in policy relevant groups: North America and Oceania, South Europe, North Europe. By relying on recent advances on Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) and adopting interaction models, we handle simultaneously three main econometric issues, named here as functional form bias, heterogeneity bias and omitted time related factors bias, which have been proved to be relevant but have been addressed separately in previous papers. The model incorporates nonlinear effects, eventually heterogeneous across countries, for both income and time. We also handle serial correlation by using autoregressive moving average (ARMA) processes. …

Energy Efficiency And Industrial Output: The Case Of The Iron And Steel Industry, Florens Flues, Dirk Rübbelke, Stefan Vögele

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The iron and steel industry is one of the most carbon emitting and energy consuming sectors in Europe. At the same time this sector is of high economic importance for the European Union. Therefore, while public environmental and energy policies target this sector, there is political concern that it suffers too much from these policy measures. Various actors fear a policy-induced decline in steel production, and possibly an international reallocation of production plants. This study analyzes the role that input prices and public policies may play in attaining an environmentally more sustainable steel production and how this - in turn …

Leadership And International Climate Cooperation, Gregor Schwerhoff Nov 2013

Leadership And International Climate Cooperation, Gregor Schwerhoff

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Which kind of reaction can a nation or group of nations expect when leading by example in climate policy? This literature survey describes possible positive reaction mechanisms from different fields of economics, some of which have scarcely been linked to climate economics previously. One effect may be behavioral, a reaction motivated by fairness, reciprocity or norms. Second, other nations may interpret the leader's action as a signal on his preference or the value of the objective and adjust their own policy based on the new information. Third, the leader may provide a service to other nations, which decreases their costs …

Looking Forward From The Past: Assessing The Potential Flood Hazard And Damage In Polesine Region By Revisiting The 1950 Flood Event, Mattia Amadio, Jaroslav Mysiak, Silvano Pecora, Alberto Agnetti Nov 2013

Looking Forward From The Past: Assessing The Potential Flood Hazard And Damage In Polesine Region By Revisiting The 1950 Flood Event, Mattia Amadio, Jaroslav Mysiak, Silvano Pecora, Alberto Agnetti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

River floods are a common natural hazard in Europe, causing high mortality and immense economic damage (EM-DAT 2009). Human-induced climate change will alter intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, hence flood risk (IPCC 2012). While large-scale assessments of flood risk dominate (Genovese, et al. 2007), the knowledge of the effects at smaller scales is poor or incomplete, with few localized studies. The approach of this study starts from the definition of the risk paradigm and the elaboration of local climatic scenarios to track a methodology aimed at elaborating and combining the three elements concurring to the determination of risk: …

Quasi-Monoenergetic And Tunable X-Rays From A Laser-Driven Compton Light Source, Nathan D. Powers, Isaac A. Ghebregziabher, Grigory V. Golovin, Cheng Liu, Shouyuan Chen, Sudeep Banerjee, Jun Zhang, Donald P. Umstadter Nov 2013

Quasi-Monoenergetic And Tunable X-Rays From A Laser-Driven Compton Light Source, Nathan D. Powers, Isaac A. Ghebregziabher, Grigory V. Golovin, Cheng Liu, Shouyuan Chen, Sudeep Banerjee, Jun Zhang, Donald P. Umstadter

Donald Umstadter Publications

The maximum achievable photon energy of compact, conventional, Compton-scattering X-ray sources is currently limited by the maximum permissible field gradient of conventional electron accelerators. An alternative compact Compton X-ray source architecture with no such limitation is based instead on a high-field-gradient laser–wakefield accelerator. In this case, a single high-power (100 TW) laser system generates intense laser pulses, which are used for both electron acceleration and scattering. Although such all-laser-based sources have been demonstrated to be bright and energetic in proof-of-principle experiments, to date they have lacked several important distinguishing characteristics of conventional Compton sources. We now report the experimental demonstration …

Playing Cards For Information Literacy: An Active Learning Experiment, Melissa Clark

Library Conference Presentations and Posters

Engaging students during one-shot library instruction sessions requires both creativity and effort. Even when the session is designed for a particular assignment, students’ information needs may not be immediate enough to inspire active participation in class activities. Multiple studies have demonstrated that active learning increases students’ understanding and retention of information, and there is a great deal of literature on the implementation and effectiveness of specific techniques. Much of the recent literature, especially related to library instruction, has focused on technology (e.g. audience response systems, social media, interactive whiteboards, and multimedia presentations) as the primary vehicle for active learning initiatives. …

Diversifying The Playing Field: Solo Performance Of African American Spirituals And Art Songs By Voice Students From All Racial Backgrounds, Emery Stephens, Caroline Helton

Music Faculty Research Publications

To further promote the performance of African American spirituals and art songs, this article offers a different perspective -- direct response from collegiate voice students, voice teachers, vocal coaches, and professional singers. In the spring of 2005, “The African American Art Song Survey” was developed and disseminated through the Internet to collect data from 220 voice teachers, coaches, and singers regarding their attitudes on performing African American classical vocal repertoire across racial backgrounds, receiving a response rate of 44% from 500 distributed surveys. Part I dealt with general demographic questions (gender, age, ethnic background, religious affiliation), and Part II addressed …

Hard X-Ray Lags In Active Galactic Nuclei: Testing The Distant Reverberation Hypothesis With Ngc 6814, D. J. Walton, A. Zoghbi, E. M. Cackett, P. Uttley, F. A. Harrison, A. C. Fabian, E. Kara, J. M. Miller, R. C. Reis, C. S. Reynolds

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

We present an X-ray spectral and temporal analysis of the variable active galaxy NGC 6814, observed with Suzaku during 2011 November. Remarkably, the X-ray spectrum shows no evidence for the soft excess commonly observed amongst other active galaxies, despite its relatively low level of obscuration, and is dominated across the whole Suzaku bandpass by the intrinsic powerlaw-like continuum. Despite this, we clearly detect the presence of a low-frequency hard lag of ~1600 s between the 0.5-2.0 and 2.0-5.0 keV energy bands at greater than 6σ significance, similar to those reported in the literature for a variety of other active galactic …

Load Path Uncertainty In A Wood Structure And The Effect On Structural Reliability, Wenqi Wang, Christopher D. Eamon Nov 2013

Load Path Uncertainty In A Wood Structure And The Effect On Structural Reliability, Wenqi Wang, Christopher D. Eamon

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications

The roof truss bearing points of a light-framed wood house were instrumented with load cells. It was found that under dead load alone, symmetric and theoretically identical truss reactions have significant variation. A similar degree of reaction discrepancy was found under the application of uplift pressures caused by hurricane winds. Analysis revealed that the majority of this discrepancy is caused by inherent uncertainties in load path. Although uncertainties in load magnitude and material resistance are accounted for in design by use of appropriate load and resistance factors, load path is generally taken to be deterministic. In this study, load path …

Reliability Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Columns Exposed To Fire, Christopher D. Eamon, Elin A. Jensen Nov 2013

Reliability Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Columns Exposed To Fire, Christopher D. Eamon, Elin A. Jensen

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications

A reliability analysis is conducted on reinforced concrete columns subjected to fire load. From an evaluation of load frequency of occurrence, load random variables are taken to be dead load, sustained live load, and fire temperature. Resistance is developed for axial capacity, with random variables taken as steel yield strength, concrete compressive strength, placement of reinforcement, and section width and height. A rational interaction model based on the Rankine approach is used to estimate column capacity as a function of fire exposure time. Various factors were considered in the analysis such as fire type, load ratio, reinforcement ratio, cover, concrete …
