Behavioral And Genomic Characterization Of Scheduled Ethanol Deprivation, Jonathan Warner Nov 2013

Behavioral And Genomic Characterization Of Scheduled Ethanol Deprivation, Jonathan Warner

Theses and Dissertations

Alcoholism is a persistent substance abuse disorder that is associated with negative health, social, and economic outcomes. Treatment strategies for alcohol use disorders are limited, and only three drugs have been approved by the FDA for treatment. Although behavioral therapy and drug combination strategies improve abstinence outcomes, the majority of those in treatment will not achieve long-term abstinence. Therefore, better treatment strategies are needed. While much progress has been made toward understanding the neurobiology of alcoholism, this knowledge has not been effectively translated into treatment strategies. Animal models of alcohol drinking have been crucial to this research effort, but until …

Field Calibration Of Low Density Polyethylene Passive Samplers For Gaseous Pops, Mohammed A. Khairy, Rainer Lohmann Nov 2013

Field Calibration Of Low Density Polyethylene Passive Samplers For Gaseous Pops, Mohammed A. Khairy, Rainer Lohmann

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

A field calibration study of low density polyethylene (LDPE) for measuring atmospheric concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) was performed in East Providence (RI), USA. LDPE samplers were collected after 3, 7, 10, 14, 17 and 21 days of exposure along with samples from a co-deployed high volume sampler. Uptake kinetics of POPs by LDPEs were confirmed both by using an uptake study over time and the inclusion of performance reference compounds (PRCs). Results indicated that only POPs with log sampler-air partitioning coefficient (KPE-A) ≤ 7.6 were approaching equilibrium by the end of the deployment period, whereas all the …

Why Doesn't That Traffic Signal Ever Turn Green? An Evaluation Of Roadway Markings For Cyclists, Stefan W. Bussey, Christopher Monsere, Peter Koonce Nov 2013

Why Doesn't That Traffic Signal Ever Turn Green? An Evaluation Of Roadway Markings For Cyclists, Stefan W. Bussey, Christopher Monsere, Peter Koonce

PSU Transportation Seminars

Signalized intersections often rely on vehicle detection to determine when to give a green light. The 2009 Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) includes an on-pavement marking and curbside sign that public agencies can use to indicate where cyclists should position themselves while waiting at an intersection. This presentation reviews the effectiveness of current markings, signs, and other methods used to help cyclists properly position themselves over detection.

Two Homologous Ef-G Proteins From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Exhibit Distinct Functions, Stephanie O. Palmer, Edna Y. Rangel, Yanmei Hu, Alexis T. Tran, James M. Bullard Nov 2013

Two Homologous Ef-G Proteins From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Exhibit Distinct Functions, Stephanie O. Palmer, Edna Y. Rangel, Yanmei Hu, Alexis T. Tran, James M. Bullard

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Genes encoding two proteins corresponding to elongation factor G (EF-G) were cloned from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The proteins encoded by these genes are both members of the EFG I subfamily. The gene encoding one of the forms of EF-G is located in the str operon and the resulting protein is referred to as EF-G1A while the gene encoding the other form of EF-G is located in another part of the genome and the resulting protein is referred to as EF-G1B. These proteins were expressed and purified to 98% homogeneity. Sequence analysis indicated the two proteins are 90/84% similar/identical. In other …

Reverse-Time Migration-Based Reflection Tomography Using Teleseismic Free Surface Multiples, S. Burdick, M. V. De Hoop, R. D. Van Der Hilst Nov 2013

Reverse-Time Migration-Based Reflection Tomography Using Teleseismic Free Surface Multiples, S. Burdick, M. V. De Hoop, R. D. Van Der Hilst

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

Converted and multiply reflected phases from teleseismic events are routinely used to create structural images of the crust–mantle boundary (Moho) and the elasticity contrasts within the crust and upper mantle. The accuracy of these images is to a large extent determined by the background velocity model used to propagate these phases to depth. In order to improve estimates of 3-D velocity variations and, hence, improve imaging, we develop a method of reverse-time migration-based reflection tomography for use with wavefields from teleseismic earthquakes recorded at broad-band seismograph arrays. Reflection tomography makes use of data redundancy—that is, the ability to generate numerous …

A 2013 Update Of Research In Andragogy Has Revealed Some New Dimensions And Another Era As We Looked Toward Andragogy's Future, John Henschke, Susan Isenberg, Particia Zalenski

Adult Education Faculty Works

This paper on the History and Philosophy of Andragogy is mainly limited [with a few exceptions] to a chronological history and the accompanying philosophy of andragogy, in line with when the English language documents were published and personal descriptions of events were written down. Some of these documents, however, present aspects of the events and ideas which recount the years and contexts in which they appeared in published form. This will not be an exact history of the events and philosophy as they appear in chronological order. But, this will be presented in the general sequence of the years that …

Early Warning Models For Systemic Banking Crises In Montenegro, Željka Asanović Nov 2013

Early Warning Models For Systemic Banking Crises In Montenegro, Željka Asanović

Economic and Business Review

The purpose of this research is to create an adequate early warning model for systemic banking crises in Montenegro. The probability of banking crisis occurrence is calculated using discrete dependent variable models, more precisely, estimating logit regression. Afterwards, seven simple logit regressions that individually have two explanatory variables are estimated. Adequate weights have been assigned to all seven regressions using the technique of Bayesian model averaging. The advantage of this technique is that it takes into account the model uncertainty by considering various combinations of models in order to minimize the author’s subjective judgment when determining reliable early warning indicators. …

Shareholders’ Pay-Out–Related Thresholds And Earnings Management, Jernej Koren, Aljoša Valentinčič Nov 2013

Shareholders’ Pay-Out–Related Thresholds And Earnings Management, Jernej Koren, Aljoša Valentinčič

Economic and Business Review

We investigate the thresholds in net shareholder pay-outs (dividends, share buy-backs and issuances) of a large sample of UK quoted firms. Discretionary accruals are analysed at these thresholds in relation to earnings management. By examining distributions and using a robust test for discontinuities, we show the existence of thresholds at zero bins of variables in question. Additionally, by looking at differences in means and medians of discretionary accruals in sorted distributions, we find that they are statistically different from bin to bin in vicinity of previously identified thresholds.

Stability Of Money Demand Function In Pakistan, Haroon Sarwar, Masood Sarwar, Muhammad Waqas Nov 2013

Stability Of Money Demand Function In Pakistan, Haroon Sarwar, Masood Sarwar, Muhammad Waqas

Economic and Business Review

The role, which money demand function plays in monetary policy formulation has attracted a lot of research studies to analyze this macroeconomic phenomenon. In the wake of current global and local economic and political upheavals, it is imperative to revisit the stability of money demand function. The study used the time series data and applied latest econometric techniques to find out the long run and short run money demand relationship. Moreover, all the three official monetary aggregates were used for finding out the most stable monetary demand relationship, which could provide correct signals for monetary policy formulation. The study found …

Agricultural Trade Liberalisation And Growth In Income Of Rural Household In Bangladesh: A Quintile-Growth Approach To The Analysis Of Distributional Consequences, Dayal Talukder, Love Chile Nov 2013

Agricultural Trade Liberalisation And Growth In Income Of Rural Household In Bangladesh: A Quintile-Growth Approach To The Analysis Of Distributional Consequences, Dayal Talukder, Love Chile

Economic and Business Review

The study has investigated the growth in income of rural households in Bangladesh with a view to analysing distributional consequences in the post-liberalisation era. Using data from secondary sources, it has applied a quintile-growth approach by dividing each group of households into five income clusters (quintiles) to analyse the incidence of growth in real income. It has found that although all groups of rural households experienced a moderate to high increase in real income, non-farm households experienced a larger increase than farm households due to a large reduction in consumer price. Farm households gained from the increase in productivity but …

Analytical Model For Out-Of-Field Dose In Photon Craniospinal Irradiation, Phillip J. Taddei, Wassim Jalbout, Rebecca M. Howell, Nabil Khater, Fady Geara, Kenneth Homann, Wayne D. Newhauser Nov 2013

Analytical Model For Out-Of-Field Dose In Photon Craniospinal Irradiation, Phillip J. Taddei, Wassim Jalbout, Rebecca M. Howell, Nabil Khater, Fady Geara, Kenneth Homann, Wayne D. Newhauser

Faculty Publications

The prediction of late effects after radiotherapy in organs outside a treatment field requires accurate estimations of out-of-field dose. However, out-of-field dose is not calculated accurately by commercial treatment planning systems (TPSs). The purpose of this study was to develop and test an analytical model for out-of-field dose during craniospinal irradiation (CSI) from photon beams produced by a linear accelerator. In two separate evaluations of the model, we measured absorbed dose for a 6 MV CSI using thermoluminescent dosimeters placed throughout an anthropomorphic phantom and fit the measured data to an analytical model of absorbed dose versus distance outside of …
