Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Resistance to the cytostatic activity of the antimalarial drug chloroquine (CQ) is becoming well understood, however, resistance to cytocidal effects of CQ is largely unexplored. We find that PfCRT mutations that almost fully recapitulate P. falciparum cytostatic CQ resistance (CQR(CS)) as quantified by CQ IC50 shift, account for only 10-20% of cytocidal CQR (CQR(CC)) as quantified by CQ LD50 shift. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis of the progeny of a chloroquine sensitive (CQS; strain HB3)×chloroquine resistant (CQR; strain Dd2) genetic cross identifies distinct genetic architectures for CQR(CS) vs CQR(CC) phenotypes, including identification of novel interacting chromosomal loci that influence CQ …

A Boot Camp Approach To Remediating Interdental /S/ In A School-Aged Child, Melanie Ellen Peris Nov 2013

A Boot Camp Approach To Remediating Interdental /S/ In A School-Aged Child, Melanie Ellen Peris

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between speech articulation therapy dose (frequency, intensity, duration) and treatment outcomes are poorly understood. Identifying optimal therapy doses for specific articulation disorders is essential to providing efficient clinical care. Recent research indicates that intensive speech therapy doses-known as boot camps-may promote rapid improvement and generalization for certain speech disorders. Therefore the present investigation examined the effects of a boot camp speech therapy approach to remediate interdental /s/ production in an 8-year-old male. The boot camp included two days of speech therapy involving visual, tactile, and auditory feedback approaches. Therapy was administered 5.5 hours per day across morning and …

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Optic neuritis: ON) is frequently a first sign of multiple sclerosis: MS), which is an inflammatory demyelinative disease of the central nerve system: CNS), including brain, optic nerve, and spinal cord. Investigating ON provides an approach to improve MS diagnosis and treatment monitoring. Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis: EAE) is a widely used animal model of MS and exhibits pathologies similar to the human disease. Magnetic resonance imaging: MRI) is a non-invasive tool to detect disease progress and as a standard diagnose procedure for MS in the clinic. In biological samples, the hydrogen nuclei are used to produce the MR signal due …

Defending Against Heap Overflow By Using Randomization In Nested Virtual Clusters, Chee Meng Tey, Debin Gao Nov 2013

Defending Against Heap Overflow By Using Randomization In Nested Virtual Clusters, Chee Meng Tey, Debin Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Heap based buffer overflows are a dangerous class of vulnerability. One countermeasure is randomizing the location of heap memory blocks. Existing techniques segregate the address space into clusters, each of which is used exclusively for one block size. This approach requires a large amount of address space reservation, and results in lower location randomization for larger blocks.

Neural Basis Of Emotional Decision Making In Trait Anxiety, Pengfei Xu, Ruolei Gu, Lucas S. Broster, Runguo Wu, Nicholas T. Van Dam, Yang Jiang, Jin Fan, Yue-Jia Luo Nov 2013

Neural Basis Of Emotional Decision Making In Trait Anxiety, Pengfei Xu, Ruolei Gu, Lucas S. Broster, Runguo Wu, Nicholas T. Van Dam, Yang Jiang, Jin Fan, Yue-Jia Luo

Publications and Research

Although trait anxiety has been associated with risk decision making, whether it is related to risk per se or to the feeling of the risk, as well as the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms, remains unclear. Using a decision-making task with a manipulation of frame (i.e., written description of options as a potential gain or loss) and functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the neurocognitive relationship between trait anxiety and decision making. The classic framing effect was observed: participants chose the safe option when it was described as a potential gain, but they avoided the same option when it was described as …

Theses and Dissertations

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Traffic and Safety Division continues to advance the safety of roadway sections throughout the state. To aid UDOT in meeting their goal the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University (BYU) has worked with the Statistics Department in developing analysis tools for safety. The most recent of these tools has been the development of a hierarchical Bayesian Poisson Mixture Model (PMM) statistical model of traffic crashes and safety on UDOT roadways statewide and the integration of the results of this model in a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework. This research focuses …

Dense Point Cloud Extraction From Oblique Imagery, Jie Zhang Nov 2013

Dense Point Cloud Extraction From Oblique Imagery, Jie Zhang

Theses

With the increasing availability of low-cost digital cameras with small or medium sized sensors, more and more airborne images are available with high resolution, which enhances the possibility in establishing three dimensional models for urban areas. The high accuracy of representation of buildings in urban areas is required for asset valuation or disaster recovery. Many automatic methods for modeling and reconstruction are applied to aerial images together with Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. If LiDAR data are not provided, manual steps must be applied, which results in semi-automated technique.

The automated extraction of 3D urban models can be aided …

Visuo-Proprioceptive Interactions During Adaptation Of The Human Reach, Timothy Judkins, Robert A. Scheidt Nov 2013

Visuo-Proprioceptive Interactions During Adaptation Of The Human Reach, Timothy Judkins, Robert A. Scheidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We examined whether visual and proprioceptive estimates of transient (mid-reach) target capture errors contribute to motor adaptation according to the probabilistic rules of information integration used for perception. Healthy adult humans grasped and moved a robotic handle between targets in the horizontal plane while the robot generated spring-like loads that varied unpredictably from trial-to-trial. For some trials, a visual cursor faithfully tracked hand motion. In others, the handle's position was locked and subjects viewed motion of a point-mass cursor driven by hand forces. In yet other trials, cursor feedback was dissociated from hand motion or altogether eliminated. We used time- …

Acoustic Droplet Vaporization In Biology And Medicine, Chung-Yin Lin, William G. Pitt Nov 2013

Acoustic Droplet Vaporization In Biology And Medicine, Chung-Yin Lin, William G. Pitt

Faculty Publications

This paper reviews the literature regarding the use of acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV) in clinical applications of imaging, embolic therapy, and therapeutic delivery. ADV is a physical process in which the pressure waves of ultrasound induce a phase transition that causes superheated liquid nanodroplets to form gas bubbles. The bubbles provide ultrasonic imaging contrast and other functions. ADV of perfluoropentane was used extensively in imaging for preclinical trials in the 1990s, but its use declined rapidly with the advent of other imaging agents. In the last decade, ADV was proposed and explored for embolic occlusion therapy, drug delivery, aberration correction, …

Sacred Orality, Sacred Dialogue: Walter J. Ong And The Practice Of Hindu-Christian Studies, Reid B. Locklin

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

THE genesis of this essay can be traced to two specific events from my own personal history. One summer, when I had just finished coursework in my doctoral program and was looking forward to my thesis, I took a retreat at Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, a Hindu ashram in the Pocono Mountains region of eastern Pennsylvania. Before one of the discourses that constituted the retreat, a lay devotee of the Arsha Vidya movement stood to offer a testimonial to the Gita Home Study Program, published by the ashram press. The study program itself is pretty simple: the text consists of sections …

Author’S Response: Cognitive Science, History-Centrism And The Future Of Hindu Studies, Rajiv Malhotra

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I thank all three responders to my books for their careful and detailed consideration of my work. I will address the following concerns that they raise:

• their challenge to my claim that the dharmic traditions are more in tune with modern cognitive science than the Abrahamic ones are

• their challenge to my claim that history-centrism in the Abrahamic faiths is an important point of difference

• their claim that I ignore how historical forces influence dharma

• their claim against a coherent Hindu philosophy and unity

• Brian Pennington’s tension with the reality that the academy seeks to …

The Pitfalls Of Trying To Be Different, Brian K. Pennington Nov 2013

The Pitfalls Of Trying To Be Different, Brian K. Pennington

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

For more than a decade Rajiv Malhotra has been known to the study of South Asian religion as a vigorous critic of the practices and frameworks that academics have employed to represent India to the West. Those who know him from his no-holds-barred online articles or by his unflinching confrontation with established scholars at academic meetings may be pleased by the rather different tone of Being Different: An Indian Challenge to Western Universalism, Malhotra’s latest attempt to intervene in the academic study of the religious traditions of the South Asian subcontinent. Whereas Malhotra has achieved much of his renown through …

Arabidopsis 56–Amino Acid Serine Palmitoyltransferase- Interacting Proteins Stimulate Sphingolipid Synthesis, Are Essential, And Affect Mycotoxin Sensitivity, Athen N. Kimberlin, Saurav Majumder, Gongshe Han, Ming Chen, Rebecca E. Cahoon, Julie M. Stone, Teresa M. Dunn, Edgar B. Cahoon

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Maintenance of sphingolipid homeostasis is critical for cell growth and programmed cell death (PCD). Serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), composed of LCB1 and LCB2 subunits, catalyzes the primary regulatory point for sphingolipid synthesis. Small subunits of SPT (ssSPT) that strongly stimulate SPT activity have been identified in mammals, but the role of ssSPT in eukaryotic cells is unclear. Candidate Arabidopsis thaliana ssSPTs, ssSPTa and ssSPTb, were identified and characterized. Expression of these 56–amino acid polypeptides in a Saccharomyces cerevisiae SPT null mutant stimulated SPT activity from the Arabidopsis LCB1/LCB2 heterodimer by >100-fold through physical interaction with LCB1/LCB2. ssSPTa transcripts were …

"Each Word Shows How You Love Me": The Social Literacy Practice Of Children's Letter Writing (1780-1860), Emily Bruce Nov 2013

"Each Word Shows How You Love Me": The Social Literacy Practice Of Children's Letter Writing (1780-1860), Emily Bruce

History Publications

This article draws on hundreds of letters that formed German children’s correspondence with their parents, other relatives, teachers and friends, written mostly between the 1780s and 1850s. Through this study, we see the part literacy played in transformations of bourgeois childhood in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe. The article further investigates how children used letters as a means of learning sociability and building relationships within kinship networks. Historians of education have sometimes treated children’s writing as secondary to more authoritative records. Yet we miss something important about the history of literacy education if we disregard children’s writing or use it only …
