Aims. According to previously published Doppler images of the magnetically active primary giant component of the RS CVn binary II Peg, the surface of the star was dominated by one single active longitude that was clearly drifting in the rotational frame of the binary system during 1994-2002; later imaging for 2004–2010, however, showed decreased and chaotic spot activity, with no signs of the drift pattern. Here we set out to investigate from a more extensive photometric dataset whether this drift is a persistent phenomenon, in which case it could be caused either by an azimuthal dynamo wave or be an …

We present a broadband study of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 091024A within the context of other ultra-long-duration GRBs. An unusually long burst detected by Konus–Wind (KW), Swift, and Fermi, GRB 091024A has prompt emission episodes covering ∼1300 s, accompanied by bright and highly structured optical emission captured by various rapid-response facilities, including the 2 m autonomous robotic Faulkes North and Liverpool Telescopes, KAIT, S-LOTIS, and the Sonoita Research Observatory. We also observed the burst with 8 and 10 m class telescopes and determine the redshift to be z = 1.0924 ± 0.0004. We find no correlation between the optical and γ-ray …

Nucleation-Free 3d Rigidity, Jialong Cheng, Meera Sitharam, Ileana Streinu Nov 2013

Nucleation-Free 3d Rigidity, Jialong Cheng, Meera Sitharam, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

When all non-edge distances of a graph realized in Rd as a bar-and-joint framework are generically implied by the bar (edge) lengths, the graph is said to be rigid in Rd. For d = 3, characterizing rigid graphs, determining implied non-edges and dependent edge sets remains an elusive, long-standing open problem.

One obstacle is to determine when implied non-edges can exist without non-trivial rigid induced subgraphs, i.e., nucleations, and how to deal with them.

In this paper, we give general inductive construction schemes and proof techniques to generate nucleation-free graphs (i.e., graphs without any nucleation) with implied …

On The Sensitivity Of The Goes Flare Classification To Properties Of The Electron Beam In The Thick-Target Model, J. W. Reep, S. J. Bradshaw, R. T. J. Mcateer Nov 2013

On The Sensitivity Of The Goes Flare Classification To Properties Of The Electron Beam In The Thick-Target Model, J. W. Reep, S. J. Bradshaw, R. T. J. Mcateer

Astronomy: Faculty & Staff Publications

The collisional thick-target model, wherein a large number of electrons are accelerated down a flaring loop, can be used to explain many observed properties of solar flares. In this study, we focus on the sensitivity of (GOES) flare classification to the properties of the thick-target model. Using a hydrodynamic model with RHESSI-derived electron beam parameters, we explore the effects of the beam energy flux (or total non-thermal energy), the cut-off energy, and the spectral index of the electron distribution on the soft X-rays observed by GOES. We conclude that (1) the GOES class is proportional to the non-thermal energy E-alpha …
