Dead Man's Switch: Disaster Rhetorics In A Posthuman Age, Daniel Patrick Richards Jan 2013

Dead Man's Switch: Disaster Rhetorics In A Posthuman Age, Daniel Patrick Richards

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When a disaster the magnitude of the Deepwater Horizon blowout and oil spill takes place, is it natural for the news media stories, investigative reports, and public deliberation to focus almost exclusively on finding the person or group responsible for such a horrendous scene. Rhetorically speaking, the discourse surrounding the event can be characterized as a reductive form of praise and blame rhetoric (epideixis). However, these efforts, while well-intentioned, are troublesome because searches for the one technical cause and the sole personal culpability are thwarted by the sheer complexity of the ecological, technological, scientific, institutional, and communicative network required for …

Development Of An Investigator-Designed Questionnaire Concerning Childbirth Delivery Options Based On The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Chun-Yi Tai

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study responds to the globally increasing rate of caesarean section, and specifically to the very high rate of elective caesarean section among Taiwanese mothers as evidence suggests that such elective caesareans pose potential health risks for mothers and babies. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a multi-component instrument based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to better understand Taiwanese pregnant women's decisions regarding their childbirth delivery options (spontaneous vaginal delivery or elective caesarean section). The study was a four-phased mixed method design. First, the TPB guided item development and instrument drafting. Second, pretesting and …

Examination Of The Relationship Of Community College Opticianry Student Outcomes With Instructional Delivery Method And Student Age, William Brent Underwood

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether student outcomes are a function of participation in different modes of delivery in an Opticianry program at the community college level. First, the intent was to determine whether differences in instructional delivery methods and background characteristics impact student performance in an Opticianry program. The three instructional delivery methods were traditional face-to-face instruction, online delivery, and a hybrid format where students take theory courses online and attend face-to-face laboratories on campus. A second objective was to determine the role of background variables such as student age, which was the age when entering …

A Case Study Of Virtual Physical Education Teachers' Experiences In And Perspectives Of Online Teaching, Leslie Michelle Williams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The 21st century has brought changes to education — changes that include greater distance learning options for middle and high school students. While distance learning has been around for a century, the progressive ways in which students are able to select and complete virtual courses through the internet in nearly every secondary content area are increasing. Physical education courses at the secondary level are among the courses offered online to students across the United States and Canada. One question that prevails in communities and particularly in physical education circles is, “How do you teach PE online?” In an effort to …

Rethinking: The Understanding Of Learning And Assessment In The Millennial Generation, Joseph R. Stasio Jr. Jan 2013

Rethinking: The Understanding Of Learning And Assessment In The Millennial Generation, Joseph R. Stasio Jr.

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Much has been written and discussed about the challenges of educating members of the Millennial Generation. There is little agreement about which sentiment is more accurate; they are lazy, entitled and spoiled with little incentive to excel academically or they are different than other generations in learning styles and motivation. What does garner agreement is that changes in teaching approaches are warranted if improvement in learning is to be achieved. This paper explores some of these arguments and makes a case for a number of changes to achieve this end.

The Internet and mobile technologies have made sharing of information and opinions among consumers easier than ever. The capacity of online participants to inspire and transform perspectives has been touted to surpass the radical potency of television when it entered the consumer’s province during the 50’s. Men and women use social media sites to learn about new products, to become smarter shoppers and to feel good about a purchase they might have already made. College …

Soccer Marketing In The United States, Brian Crow, Dennis Phillips, Dallas Branch, Greg Hutton Jan 2013

Soccer Marketing In The United States, Brian Crow, Dennis Phillips, Dallas Branch, Greg Hutton

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Soccer is continuing to grow in popularity in the United States. According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, there are more than 4 million players in the US, more than double the number in 1990 (Belson, 2010). The Sports and Fitness Industry Association (formerly SGMA) has found that total participation in soccer had increased nearly 3% annually in 2011 (Physical Activity Council, 2011). According to another SFIA study, however, a shortage of facilities and emphasis on tournament and showcase events may result in potential future downturn in participation (Athletic Business, 2012). There is also a shifting emphasis from tournament and showcase …

Communicating Resilience: A Discursive Leadership Perspective, David H. Torres, Jeremy P. Fyke Jan 2013

Communicating Resilience: A Discursive Leadership Perspective, David H. Torres, Jeremy P. Fyke

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

In this essay we challenge whether current conceptions of optimism, hope, and resilience are complete enough to account for the complexity and nuance of developing and maintaining these in practice. For example, a quick perusal of popular outlets (e.g., Forbes, Harvard Business Review) reveals advice to managers urging them to “be optimistic,” or “be happy” so that these types of emotions or feelings can spread to the workplace. One even finds simple advice and steps to follow on how to foster these types of things in the workplace (McKee; Tjan). We argue that this common perspective focuses narrowly …

Faculty Publications

Purpose. Persons with Parkinson disease (PD) demonstrate deficits in motor learning as well as bidirectional interference (the performance of one task concurrently interferes with the performance of another task) during dual-task performance. Few studies have examined the practice dosages necessary for behavioral change in rehabilitation relevant tasks. Therefore, to compare the effects of age and PD on motor learning during dual-task performance, this pilot study examined persons with PD as well as neurologically healthy participants during concurrent performance of postural and speaking tasks. Methods. Seven persons with PD and 7 healthy age-matched and 10 healthy young control subjects were tested …

Mitt Romney’S Paralipsis: (Un)Veiling Jesus In “Faith In America”, Richard Benjamin Crosby

Faculty Publications

Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith has been a topic of suspicion and debate among Christian conservatives. Romney addressed the issue in a 2007 address titled “Faith in America.” This article argues that Romney’s use of paralipsis helps to explain the divergent popular and academic responses to the speech. Paralipsis may be used as more than a mere stylistic device; it may also be employed as a comprehensive rhetorical strategy in an increasingly polarized political culture.

Ideological War In Inclusive Twitter: #Indonesiatanpajil Versus Jaringan Islam Liberal, Sindhunata Hargyono

Antropologi Indonesia

In early 2012, a civil-initiated movement called #IndonesiaTanpaFPI urged the government todisband an Islamic fundamentalist group called FPI (Front Pembela Islam) because of the violence to an Islamic minority group that FPI had commited earlier. #IndonesiaTanpaFPI heavily relied upon Twitter in organizing their movement, so when a counter-movement from the pro-FPI emerged, it was on Twitter as well; the counter-movement called themselves #IndonesiaTanpaJIL. This counter-movement believes that #IndonesiaTanpaFPI was actually initiated and organized by Jaringan Islam Liberal (JIL). Since then, #IndonesiaTanpaJIL and JIL have been fighting discursively on Twitter. This article concentrates on the formation of two religious publics constituted …

The modules have a focus on environmental issues and tend to address only one of the three dimensions, environmental, social and …

Inclusion, Voice, And Process-Based Constitutionalism, Colleen Sheppard Jan 2013

Inclusion, Voice, And Process-Based Constitutionalism, Colleen Sheppard

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article explores a growing emphasis on process issues in the elaboration of constitutional rights and freedoms, focusing on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In a diverse range of contexts, judges are framing constitutional rights and freedoms in terms of the processes and practices they require, rather than in terms of specific constitutionally mandated substantive outcomes. Thus, constitutional rights have been interpreted to require a duty to negotiate, a duty to consult, a duty to accommodate, and entitlements to participate in democratic governance. The growing emphasis on processes and practices is positive to the extent that it resonates …

Rights Adjudication In A Plurinational State: The Supreme Court Of Canada, Freedom Of Religion, And The Politics Of Reasonable Accommodation, Sujit Choudhry Jan 2013

Rights Adjudication In A Plurinational State: The Supreme Court Of Canada, Freedom Of Religion, And The Politics Of Reasonable Accommodation, Sujit Choudhry

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

A disproportionate number of the Supreme Court of Canada’s recent cases on freedom of religion come out of Quebec and involve claims for reasonable accommodation. These decisions represent a point of national cleavage in two respects. First, in each case the Quebec Court of Appeal rejected the section 2(a) claims, and the Supreme Court of Canada overturned its decision. Second, the Supreme Court has often divided on national lines with one or more francophone judges from Quebec writing a concurrence or a sharp dissent. Moreover, francophone judges from outside Quebec have also broken ranks with their colleagues. The cleavages on …

Social Justice And The Charter: Comparison And Choice, Margot Young Jan 2013

Social Justice And The Charter: Comparison And Choice, Margot Young

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

At a time of radical inequality, the changes sought by social justice advocacy are urgently needed. Yet repeatedly, courts fail to respond adequately to this challenge. A core issue plagues social justice jurisprudence under sections 7 and 15: the difficulty inevitable in the contemplation and expression of the social and political forms in which oppression and social injustice occur. This problem manifests doctrinally in ways specific to the rights at issue. In section 15 cases, the casting of comparator groups has been deeply problematic, and in both section 15 and section 7 cases, the courts fail to deliver a nuanced …

Expecting The Unexpected : Measuring Uncertainties In Mobile Robot Path Planning In Dynamic Envionments, Yan Li, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

Unexpected obstacles pose significant challenges to mobile robot navigation. In this paper we investigate how, based on the assumption that unexpected obstacles really follow patterns that can be exploited, a mobile robot can learn the locations within an environment that are likely to contain obstacles, and so plan optimal paths by avoiding these locations in subsequent navigation tasks. We propose the DUNC (Dynamically Updating Navigational Confidence) method to do this. We evaluate the performance of the DUNC method by comparing it with existing methods in a large number of randomly generated simulated test environments. our evaluations show that, by learning …

Unicystic Ameloblastoma, Ming-Hsuan Hsu, Meng-Ling Chiang, Jyh-Kwei Chen

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Unicystic ameloblastomas are a rare variant of ameloblastomas, which usually occur in younger populations. They are characterized by slow growth and being relatively locally aggressive, with the main site of origin being the posterior portion of the mandible. Late recurrence following surgical management is relatively common and is related to the histological type, the site of origin, and the initial treatment modality. This case report describes a unicystic ameloblastoma occurring in the right posterior mandible of an 8-year-old girl. She presented with progressive swelling of the right lower deciduous molar region for 3 months. Panorex imaging showed a well-defined …

An Adult Juvenile Xanthogranuloma In The Buccal Mucosa, Ching-Yi Chen, Cheong-Lin Sung, Mu-Yen Hsieh, Wen-Chen Wang, Li-Min Lin, Yuk-Kwan Chen

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Juvenile xanthogranulomas (JXGs) are a type of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis that commonly affects infants and children. Adult oral JXGs are very rare. A 32-year-old Taiwanese male presented with the chief complaint of a solitary, firm, painless, non-tender swelling over the right buccal mucosa for about 2 weeks. An excisional biopsy of the lesion revealed a mixture of histiocytes, inflammatory cells, and Touton giant cells, and immunohistochemical positivity for CD68 and negativity for S-100 and CD1a confirmed the diagnosis of a JXG. Therefore, the current case report documents, to our knowledge, the first occurrence of an adult oral JXG in …

Repair Of A Perforating Internal Resorption: Two Case Reports, Fang-Chi Li, Wei-Chiang Hung Jan 2013

Repair Of A Perforating Internal Resorption: Two Case Reports, Fang-Chi Li, Wei-Chiang Hung

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Internal resorption is a rare condition in permanent teeth, and may result from trauma, caries, or restorative procedures. Internal resorption is usually asymptomatic and is first identified as a round-shaped enlargement of a root-canal space on routine radiographs. Large resorption defects may result in penetration of the tooth into the periodontium through the cementum. The gold-standard treatment consists of debridement and obturation of the pulp space, sealing of the external communication, and restoration of the normal function of the tooth through a nonsurgical or surgical method. In this case presentation, we report on two methods for repair of internal …

Myoepithelioma Of The Upper Lip, Hirohiko Tachibana, Shigeo Ishikawa, Noriaki Kikuchi, Mitsunori Yamakawa, Yoshioki Hamamoto, Mitsuyoshi Iino

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Myoepithelioma is a rare form of salivary gland tumor composed entirely of myoepithelial cells. This tumor was formerly considered to be a subtype of pleomorphic adenoma; however, in the 1991 World Health Organization classification, it is listed as an independent entity. The most favorable site of occurrence of myoepithelioma is the parotid gland. Here, we report an extremely rare case of myoepithelioma of the upper lip. A 56-year-old woman presented with a painless mass on her upper lip. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 23 mm × 18 mm well-defined ovoid tumor. A benign minor salivary gland tumor was clinically …
