An Enactive Approach To Technologically Mediated Learning Through Play, Katina Nathalie Hazelden Jan 2013

An Enactive Approach To Technologically Mediated Learning Through Play, Katina Nathalie Hazelden

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis investigated the application of enactive principles to the design of classroom technolo- gies for young children’s learning through play. This study identified the attributes of an enactive pedagogy, in order to develop a design framework to accommodate enactive learning processes. From an enactive perspective, the learner is defined as an autonomous agent, capable of adapta- tion via the recursive consumption of self generated meaning within the constraints of a social and material world. Adaptation is the parallel development of mind and body that occurs through inter- action, which renders knowledge contingent on the environment from which it emerged. …

The Sampling Of Bodily Sound In Contemporary Composition: Towards An Embodied Analysis, Stacey Sewell Jan 2013

The Sampling Of Bodily Sound In Contemporary Composition: Towards An Embodied Analysis, Stacey Sewell

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The listener’s experience as an embodied subject is at the centre of this work. Embodied experience forms the basis for analyses of three contemporary compositions that sample bodily sound, in order to question how such works represent and mediate the body. The possible applications of this embodied methodology are illustrated through three case studies: Crackers by Christof Migone (2001), A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure by Matmos (2001) and Ground Techniques (2009) by Neil Luck. The findings of each analysis are placed within discussion of critical and theoretical concerns related to the (re)presentation, mediation and manipulation of …

Networks Of Print, Patronage And Religion In England And Scotland 1580-1604: The Career Of Robert Waldegrave, Rebecca Jane Emmett Jan 2013

Networks Of Print, Patronage And Religion In England And Scotland 1580-1604: The Career Of Robert Waldegrave, Rebecca Jane Emmett

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis seeks to examine the nature of the intertwined networks of print, patronage and religion that existed within and across England and Scotland between 1580 and 1604, through the career of the English printer Robert Waldegrave. Multifaceted and complex, Waldegrave’s career spanned two countries, four decades and numerous controversies. To date scholars have engaged in a teleological narrative of his career, culminating in his involvement with the Marprelate press between April 1588/9. This focus on Waldegrave as a religious radical has coloured accounts of his English business and resulted in his Scottish career being disregarded by many. This thesis …

Borders And Objects: Representing The Geopolitical In New World Art Histories, 1990-2010, Fang-Lin Hou Jan 2013

Borders And Objects: Representing The Geopolitical In New World Art Histories, 1990-2010, Fang-Lin Hou

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Several contemporary art historians have been interested in exploring how their discipline could respond to the increasing globalisation of knowledge and information by encompassing global perspectives into the methodologies that underpin their approaches to art historiography. This dissertation aims to explore how, in developing their new approaches to world art history, they have drawn on a range of natural and social sciences, thus enabling their work to be placed in a wider social, political and indeed global context. While their individual approaches are many and varied it is important to identify commonalities between them so as to highlight unifying approaches …

Non-Standard Sound Synthesis With Dynamic Models, Nikolas Valsamakis Jan 2013

Non-Standard Sound Synthesis With Dynamic Models, Nikolas Valsamakis

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This Thesis proposes three main objectives: (i) to provide the concept of a new generalized non-standard synthesis model that would provide the framework for incorporating other non-standard synthesis approaches; (ii) to explore dynamic sound modeling through the application of new non-standard synthesis techniques and procedures; and (iii) to experiment with dynamic sound synthesis for the creation of novel sound objects. In order to achieve these objectives, this Thesis introduces a new paradigm for non-standard synthesis that is based in the algorithmic assemblage of minute wave segments to form sound waveforms. This paradigm is called Extended Waveform Segment Synthesis (EWSS) and …

Mythogeographic Performance And Performative Interventions In Spaces Of Heritage-Tourism, Phil Smith Jan 2013

Mythogeographic Performance And Performative Interventions In Spaces Of Heritage-Tourism, Phil Smith

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Abstract MYTHOGEOGRAPHIC PERFORMANCE AND PERFORMATIVE INTERVENTIONS IN SPACES OF HERITAGE-TOURISM by PHIL SMITH This thesis offers new models for participatory and performative interventions in sites of heritage tourism through a theorized practical engagement. Drawing on both Tourism Studies and Performance Studies, the primary aim of these interventions is to reveal and provoke ways of seeing and using these sites as places of multiple meanings rather than as ones constricted and bounded by normative heritage narratives in their production and management. The experimental phase of the project discussed in the thesis includes three contrasting case studies: GeoQuest, Sardine Street, and Water …

Collecting En Route: An Exploration Of The Ethnographic Collection Of Gertrude Emily Benham, Catherine Cummings Jan 2013

Collecting En Route: An Exploration Of The Ethnographic Collection Of Gertrude Emily Benham, Catherine Cummings

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century the collecting of objects from colonized countries and their subsequent display in western museums was widespread throughout Western Europe. How and why these collections were made, the processes of collection, and by whom, has only recently begun to be addressed. This thesis is an exploration of the ethnographic collection of Gertrude Emily Benham (1867-1938) who made eight voyages independently around the world from 1904 until 1938, during which time she amassed a collection of approximately eight hundred objects, which she donated to Plymouth City …

A Comparative Analysis Of How The Rights Of Children As Set Out In The United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child Are Made Effective Through Their Implementation In Kurdistan/Iraq And The United Kingdom, Nishitiman Mohammed Jan 2013

A Comparative Analysis Of How The Rights Of Children As Set Out In The United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child Are Made Effective Through Their Implementation In Kurdistan/Iraq And The United Kingdom, Nishitiman Mohammed

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was unanimously adopted in 1989. It was hoped that the Convention would have a positive impact on all children however, despite a country ratifying the Convention and proclaiming to have laws in the interests of children it is still possible for that country to fail in the attempt to implement children’s rights effectively. This can clearly be seen in Kurdistan, Iraq where implementation of children’s rights remains limited. With the continuing violence in Iraq, children’s rights have been somewhat neglected and as with many such situations children are the innocent …

A Critical Practice-Based Exploration Of Interactive Panoramas' Role In Helping To Preserve Cultural Memory, Karol Kwiatek Jan 2013

A Critical Practice-Based Exploration Of Interactive Panoramas' Role In Helping To Preserve Cultural Memory, Karol Kwiatek

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The rapid development of digital communication technologies in the 20th and 21st centuries has affected the way researchers look at ways memory – especially cultural memory – can be preserved and enhanced. State-of-the-art communication technologies such as the Internet or immersive environments support participation and interaction and transform memory into ‘prosthetic’ experience, where digital technologies could enable 'implantation' of events that have not actually been experienced. While there is a wealth of research on the preservation of public memory and cultural heritage sites using digital media, more can be explored on how these media can contribute to the cultivation of …

Conceptualizing The Use Of Cognitive Interventions Among Persons With Intellectual Disabilities Who Experience Depression, Abdoulaye Diallo, Shawn P. Saladin, Darlene A.G. Groomes, Jerome Fischer, Sandra Hansmann

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

Depression can affect the lives of all persons and can have especially profound implications on those with cognitive limitations; however, depression need not be an insurmountable roadblock to employment for persons with intellectual disabilities. Cognitive interventions - such as life story approach, socio-cognitive, and rational emotive behavior therapy-can be effective for litigating problems with depression among those with cognitive limitation including employment-related barriers due to depression. This article reviews how counselors can use cognitive interventions' behavioral and cognitive components to assist those with intellectual disabilities with depression.

Lexical/Semantic Organisation In Bilingual And Monolingual Infants, Rafalla Farag Jan 2013

Lexical/Semantic Organisation In Bilingual And Monolingual Infants, Rafalla Farag

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Abstract Previous studies show that bilingual infants are slower in developing phonology and tend to experience some difficulties in acquiring some grammatical rules. Furthermore, as compared to their monolingual peers, bilingual infants tend to have less vocabulary. This thesis set out to explore how bilingual infants organise the lexical information in their two languages. Specifically, we examined the lexical-semantic relationships between words within and across languages using a word-to-word priming paradigm. The thesis sought also to uncover any relationship between semantic priming effects and the size of vocabulary. Vocabulary measures such as the BPVS II, the SETK, and the Oxford …

Genetic Transformation Of Cauliflower (Brassica Oleracea Var.Botrytis) Using Agrobacterium Tumefaciens As A Vector For Improved Stress Resistance, Fadil Al-Swedi Jan 2013

The Dynamics Of Dense Water Cascades: From Laboratory Scales To The Arctic Ocean, Fred Wobus Jan 2013

The Dynamics Of Dense Water Cascades: From Laboratory Scales To The Arctic Ocean, Fred Wobus

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The sinking of dense shelf waters down the continental slope (or “cascading”) contributes to oceanic water mass formation and carbon cycling. Cascading is therefore of significant importance for the global overturning circulation and thus climate. The occurrence of cascades is highly intermittent in space and time and observations of the process itself (rather than its outcomes) are scarce. Global climate models do not typically resolve cascading owing to numerical challenges concerning turbulence, mixing and faithful representation of bottom boundary layer dynamics. This work was motivated by the need to improve the representation of cascading in numerical ocean circulation models. Typical …

Allelopathic Potential Of The Invasive Alien Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens Glandulifera Royle), Owen Peter Smith Jan 2013

Allelopathic Potential Of The Invasive Alien Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens Glandulifera Royle), Owen Peter Smith

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Investigations were carried out into the allelopathic potential of the invasive alien annual Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera Royle) using a series of bioassays, including ones developed or adapted for this study. They were evaluated for their suitability to detect three of the four main modes of allelochemical release, namely leaching, exudation and decomposition. Assays which involved the measurement of lettuce radicles and hypocotyls gave reliable results and allowed a range of different Impatiens material, both living and dead, to be assessed and ranked according to the allelopathic effects demonstrated. Attempts were made to isolate resource competition from allelopathy using separately …

Histopathological Effects Of Metal And Metalic Nanoparticles On The Body Systems Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Genan Adnan Al-Bairuty Jan 2013

Histopathological Effects Of Metal And Metalic Nanoparticles On The Body Systems Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Genan Adnan Al-Bairuty

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Histopathology studies of metal nanoparticles (NPs) compared to traditional forms of metal in fish are scarce. Additionally, it is unclear whether metal nanoparticles cause greater or different pathologies compared to other forms of metal. The current study aimed to assess the pathological effects of Cu-NPs and TiO2 NPs on rainbow trout via various routes of exposure and, where appropriate, to compare them to either the equivalent dissolved metal salts or bulk powder forms. The first experiment showed that waterborne exposure to Cu-NPs and CuSO4 caused similar types of organ pathologies and alteration in the spleen content, however there were some …

A Comparison Of Carbon Sequestration Potential And Photosynthetic Efficiency In Evergreen And Deciduous Oaks Growing In Contrasting Environments In The Southwest Uk, Demelza Carne

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Global climate change is predicted to alter the weather patterns around the world, as climatic zones shift, forest carbon sequestration projects (e.g. the UK woodland carbon code) need to take into account the specific requirements of planted species. In the UK, oaks are an important charismatic group of trees favoured in recent planting programmes. The English oak (Quercus robur L.), has poor water conservation, but is a major component of natural forests in lowland UK. On the other hand, Holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) is a Mediterranean oak that has high water conservation and can also tolerate cold despite being …

Rule Based Forecasting [Rbf] - Improving Efficacy Of Judgmental Forecasts Using Simplified Expert Rules, Monica Adya, Edward J. Lusk Jan 2013

Rule Based Forecasting [Rbf] - Improving Efficacy Of Judgmental Forecasts Using Simplified Expert Rules, Monica Adya, Edward J. Lusk

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Rule-based Forecasting (RBF) has emerged to be an effective forecasting model compared to well-accepted benchmarks. However, the original RBF model, introduced in1992, incorporates 99 production rules and is, therefore, difficult to apply judgmentally. In this research study, we present a core rule-set from RBF that can be used to inform both judgmental forecasting practice and pedagogy. The simplified rule-set, called coreRBF, is validated by asking forecasters to judgmentally apply the rules to time series forecasting tasks. Results demonstrate that forecasting accuracy from judgmental use of coreRBF is not statistically different from that reported from similar applications of RBF. Further, we …

The Case Of Microsoft's Surface Tablet: Going Behind The Strategy With Swot, David R. King, Todd Peterson Jan 2013

The Case Of Microsoft's Surface Tablet: Going Behind The Strategy With Swot, David R. King, Todd Peterson

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Following its development at Harvard Business School in the 1950s, the SWOT framework became a frequently used decision tool. While the complexity organizations confront in the modern business world has increased, SWOT provides an intuitive way to organize information into internal “Strengths and Weaknesses” and external “Opportunities and Threats.” Another reason that SWOT remains relevant is its flexibility that enables integrating other analysis tools. It also encompasses multiple steps of strategy development to cover analysis, formulating options, and implementation.

Bodies, Emotions And Tourism: A Study Of Costa Cruises Commercials, Mariangela Albano, Gaetano Sabato

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Nowadays, tourism industry proposes different opportunities to live a vacation where the body is the main interest and the central focus of experience. Each form of tourism shows a particular universe of representation of the body and a corresponding emotional language. In this context, where bodies and spaces are associated and reciprocally constructed as symbolic languages for the benefit of the tourist’s extraordinary experience, cruise tourism is an interesting case in point to analyze above all because on cruises, people use the space of the ship in different ways and, at the same time, following general corporeal and spatial schemes. …

The Muslim Sports Tourist And The Olympic Games Movement, Karl A. Russell, Noëlle O'Connor Jan 2013

The Muslim Sports Tourist And The Olympic Games Movement, Karl A. Russell, Noëlle O'Connor

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This paper explores the view that the Olympic Games Movement and the modern day Olympic Games while seeking to be a secular event is regarded by many participants and spectators as an event where they are able to demonstrate expressions of their religious faith. The first Olympic Games were staged in ancient Greece and they comprised a series of sporting events staged as a way of honouring the Greek God; Zeus, considered by the Romans to be a pagan god. The origins and mythology surrounding the early Olympic Games had a non-secular basis and led to an almost intrinsic belief …

The paper was born out of my desire for exploratory research on religious tourism in developing countries. Data for this research …

The Use Of Silver Nanoparticles As An Antifungal Coating On Silicone Facial Prosthesis, Zhala Meran Jan 2013

The Use Of Silver Nanoparticles As An Antifungal Coating On Silicone Facial Prosthesis, Zhala Meran

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Abstract Introduction Maxillofacial prostheses are used to substitute lost facial parts, but give variable clinical results due to complications such as contamination and infection. Candida albicans infection remains a significant problem for facial prostheses made of silicone, as the organism causes degradation of the material and infection of the surrounding tissue. This study investigated the antifungal properties of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as a coating on silicone facial prostheses to eliminate infection. Methods The experimental approach used fibroblast cell cultures to test the biocompatibility of Ag NPs and to demonstrate the safety of Ag NPs compared to AgNO3 at concentrations …

Learning, Self-Organisation And Homeostasis In Spiking Neuron Networks Using Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity, James Humble Jan 2013

Learning, Self-Organisation And Homeostasis In Spiking Neuron Networks Using Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity, James Humble

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Spike-timing dependent plasticity is a learning mechanism used extensively within neural modelling. The learning rule has been shown to allow a neuron to find the onset of a spatio-temporal pattern repeated among its afferents. In this thesis, the first question addressed is ‘what does this neuron learn?’ With a spiking neuron model and linear prediction, evidence is adduced that the neuron learns two components: (1) the level of average background activity and (2) specific spike times of a pattern. Taking advantage of these findings, a network is developed that can train recognisers for longer spatio-temporal input signals using spike-timing dependent …

Mood, Emotive Content, And Reasoning, Daniel Zahra Jan 2013

Mood, Emotive Content, And Reasoning, Daniel Zahra

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Mood, Emotive Content, and Reasoning - Daniel Zahra Theories of how individuals reason, and how they experience emotion abound in the psychological literature; yet, despite the common lay-theories of how emotions might affect a person’s reasoning, very little empirical work has been conducted on this relationship. The current thesis addresses this knowledge-gap by first distilling from the literature two classes of emotion theory; Information, and Load; and then systematically testing the explanatory power of these theories. A dual-process framework is employed in order to define low (Type One) and high effort (Type Two) strategies. Information theories predict that negative emotion …
