The Effect Of Bmi On The Age Of Menarche In Adolescent Girls, Samara R. Sterling Jan 2013

The Effect Of Bmi On The Age Of Menarche In Adolescent Girls, Samara R. Sterling

Master's Theses

Problem. Over the past century, the age of menarche has consistently declined in the United States and globally. Obesity has also increased by 82% globally over the past 20 years. Obesity, as measured by BMI percentiles in children, may contribute to the declining age of menarche. -- Method. Adolescent girls ages 12-19 were examined in California and Michigan. Physical development and the age of menarche were assessed through an online questionnaire. Height and weight measurements were taken at a clinic and converted to BMI percentile values. -- Results. A negative correlation was observed between BMI percentile values and the age …

Toward A Biblical View Of Collective Responsibility For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In The Twenty-First Century, Miroslav Danihel Jan 2013

Toward A Biblical View Of Collective Responsibility For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In The Twenty-First Century, Miroslav Danihel

Master's Theses

The notion of collective responsibility is an issue that is not very popular in the postmodern society. However, the idea of collective responsibility can be found in the Bible. This thesis examines philosophical, ethical, and biblical sources on the subject. The biblical evidence focuses on examining Josh 7 and Ezek 18, as well as some of the New Testament contributions to the topic. The relationship between collective responsibility, collective personality, and collective punishment is discussed. The thesis acknowledges collective responsibility as a valid biblical doctrine and proposes its application for church members, leaders, and the decision-making process in the Seventh-day …

Infusing Problem-Based Learning (Pbl) Into Science Methods Courses Across Virginia, K. R. Thomas, P. L. Horne, S. M. Donnelly, C. T. Berube Jan 2013

Infusing Problem-Based Learning (Pbl) Into Science Methods Courses Across Virginia, K. R. Thomas, P. L. Horne, S. M. Donnelly, C. T. Berube

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This article outlines the results of a collaborative study of the effects of infusing problem-based learning (PBL) into K-12 science methods courses across four universities in Virginia. Changes in pre-service teachers' attitudes surrounding science teaching were measured before and after completing a science methods course in which they experienced PBL first-hand as participants, and then practiced designing their own PBL units for use in their future classrooms. The results indicate that exposure to PBL enhances pre-service teachers' knowledge of inquiry methods and self-efficacy in teaching science.

Grappling With Issues Of Learning Science From Everyday Experiences: An Illustrative Case Study, A.-L. Tan, M. Kim, F. Talaue Jan 2013

Grappling With Issues Of Learning Science From Everyday Experiences: An Illustrative Case Study, A.-L. Tan, M. Kim, F. Talaue

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

There are different perceptions among researchers with regard to the infusion of everyday experience in the teaching of science: 1) it hinders the learning of science concepts; or, 2) it increases the participation and motivation of students in science learning. This article attempts to contemplate those different perspectives of everyday knowledge in science classrooms by using everyday contexts to teach grade 3 science in Singapore. In this study, two groups of grade 3 students were presented with a scenario that required them to apply the concept of properties of materials to design a shoe. Subsequently, the transcripts of classroom discussions …

The Regulation And Packaging Of Synaptic Vesicles Related To Recruitment Within Crayfish And Fruit Fly Neuromuscular Junctions: Variations In Low- And High-Output Terminals, Wenhui Wu Jan 2013

The Regulation And Packaging Of Synaptic Vesicles Related To Recruitment Within Crayfish And Fruit Fly Neuromuscular Junctions: Variations In Low- And High-Output Terminals, Wenhui Wu

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the CNS and at the neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) of invertebrate. The characteristic similarities to CNS glutamatergic synapses in vertebrate and the anatomical simplicity of invertebrate NMJs favor the investigation of glutamatergic synaptic functions in this system. This dissertation mainly aimed to physiologically separate two functional vesicle groups, the reserve pool (RP) and readily releasable pool (RRP) within presynaptic nerve terminals of Procambarus Clarkii and Drosophila melanogaster. This was addressed in part by blocking the vesicular glutamate transporter (VGlut) with bafilomycin A1. Various frequencies of motor nerve stimulation, exposure time, and concentration of …

"I'M Not Half The Man I Used To Be:[Closesmartdoublequote] Exposure To Risk Without Bodily Harm In Anglo-American And Israeli Law, Benjamin Shmueli

Emory International Law Review

This Article addresses the fundamental and age-old question of defining harm in tort law. It follows the case of the trapped Chilean miners, among others. It challenges, in a comparative view, the common notion that no compensation will be awarded for tortious conduct that produces no actual loss or damages because pure risks that have not yet materialized are not considered a harm.

On Stretch Factors Of Greedy Routing Algorithms, Omkar U. Kulkarni Jan 2013

On Stretch Factors Of Greedy Routing Algorithms, Omkar U. Kulkarni

Dissertations

Routing aims to find a path to deliver the information from a source to the destination in the network. Routing is one of the most important algorithmic problems in networking. Our research focuses primarily on greedy routing algorithms. The greedy routing algorithms always compute a routing path by forwarding a message to a neighbor closer to the destination than itself. The closeness to the destination can be measured differently via different notions of distances. Greedy routing algorithms keep forwarding the message to a neighbor closer to the destination than itself until the distance to the destination reduces to zero. When …

Development Of Phasor Measurement Units Operation For Protection Application, Abouzar Rahmati Jan 2013

Development Of Phasor Measurement Units Operation For Protection Application, Abouzar Rahmati

Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to develop algorithms for the protection and control of the power smart grids. Incorporating the alternative energy resources into the power grid bring signicant challenge associated with protection, control, and security of the smart grids. In smart grids, it is dicult to measure the main variables such as impedance, fault distance and machine angle from nonlinear relationship between measured power and the estimation of the voltages and currents phasors. This is mainly due to the fact that the real-time parameter estimations are usually obtained from the linearized model. Therefore, there exist large estimation errors …
