Screening And Brief Interventions For Alcohol Use In College Students, Angela Ann Dolalie Kelsch Jan 2013

Screening And Brief Interventions For Alcohol Use In College Students, Angela Ann Dolalie Kelsch

Nursing

College students are recognized as a high-risk group for alcohol problems in the United States. Annually approximately 500,000 college students are unintentionally injured, and more than 1,700 college students die from alcohol-related unintentional injury. In addition, individuals who begin drinking alcohol early in life increase their risk of developing serious alcohol problems later in life. As a result, it is essential that efforts be made to focus on opportunities for alcohol screening and brief intervention where applicable in an attempt to reduce problem drinking behaviors. Alcohol screening and brief interventions for alcohol misuse is an effective way for health care …

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Couples who are between the ages of 18 and 40 divorce frequently in the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventist. In Highlands County, Florida young couples seem to experience marital stress which may affect marital satisfaction. Unique to young marriages are certain stressors that can contribute to a decrease in marital satisfaction which will inevitably lead to a failed relationship. Although, there are several enrichment programs that focus on potential challenges for couples in general, few solely target married couples age 18 -40 with skills to manage these unique stressors.

Method

The purpose of this in-ministry project was to …

Steam Baths, Jeremiah Johnson Jan 2013

Steam Baths, Jeremiah Johnson

Architecture Theses

Today, architecture constitutes the greatest range of the built environment; yet our buildings are causing physiological and mental stress to the public. If architecture is designed intuitively by engaging the public’s senses through innate habits, we can reduce the stress caused by ‘counter-intuitive’ design and delight the guests. This Thesis explores ‘intuitive design’ through an ancient typology—the bathhouse—built cliff-side of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota. By utilizing the concurrent transformative mixed research method, qualitative and quantitative data will present a cohesive analysis to complete the architecture.

The Activated Medium: Modern Architectural Representation And Transposition, Brad Benke Jan 2013

The Activated Medium: Modern Architectural Representation And Transposition, Brad Benke

Architecture Theses

This thesis explores the role of the modern architectural representation and its changing relationship to the act of making. The investigation will seek and test outlets for architectural representations to operate under functional and technical demands while activating a generative environment for the positive transposition from representing to building. These outlets will be demonstrated through the design and documentation of a growing building typology of the 21st century: the data center. The design is sited in Downtown Winnipeg Manitoba and is contrived to test the opportunities of an urban, city owned, public data center.

Heuristics For Dual Coverage In Wireless Sensor Networks, Claudia Sueli Magalhaes Sampaio Jan 2013

Heuristics For Dual Coverage In Wireless Sensor Networks, Claudia Sueli Magalhaes Sampaio

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Nowadays there is an increasing interest in wireless sensor networks due to their usage in a diverse range of applications such as telemetry and smart grids. In such networks, a valid concern is the minimization of the total network cost. To achieve this goal, one objective is to minimize the number of base-stations (nodes) to provide coverage for the sensors. In previous works, it has been usually assumed that base-station coverage already exists over the entire area of interest and the focus is to select cluster-heads in ad-hoc networks. Other works select the base-station among candidates given pre-defined constraints for …

Provable Data Possession Using Sigma Protocols, Akshaya Mohan Jan 2013

Provable Data Possession Using Sigma Protocols, Akshaya Mohan

Electrical and Computer Engineering

A Provable Data Possession (PDP) scheme allows a client which has stored data at an untrusted server to verify that the server possesses the original data that it stored without retrieving the entire file. In this thesis study, a new PDP scheme is built using the concept of sigma protocols. The client pre-processes a file and stores it on the server. At a later time, the client issues a challenge to the server requesting it to compute a Proof of Possession. The client verifies the response using its locally stored metadata. The challenge-response protocol that is derived from the sigma …

Coordination In Disaster Recovery: Implications For Policy And Practice, Sarah Jo Bundy Jan 2013

Coordination In Disaster Recovery: Implications For Policy And Practice, Sarah Jo Bundy

Emergency Management

Disaster scholarship and recent disaster policy in the United States have suggested that coordination of efforts in the disaster recovery process will allow impacted jurisdictions to maximize positive recovery outcomes. Yet it remains unclear exactly who should be, or is, coordinating disaster recovery at the local level. This study explored the role of county elected officials in disaster recovery in an attempt to understand what role these elected officials currently play in the recovery process—particularly as related to the coordination of recovery efforts. During the initial data collection process, the researcher discovered that the role of county elected officials in …

International Corporate Bribery And Unilateral Enforcement, William Magnuson Jan 2013

International Corporate Bribery And Unilateral Enforcement, William Magnuson

Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores how unilateral action to regulate international corporate bribery can serve as a partial substitute for multilateral action. The standard ac-count generally assumes that domestic efforts to com-bat international corporate bribery disadvantage domestic corporations and create a structural impediment to broader multilateral cooperation. This model, however, underestimates the extent to which states can and do regulate international corporate bribery through unilateral action, and in particular, through the enforcement of domestic laws against foreign actors. This Article argues that the extraterritorial enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) has created a strong incentive for foreign corporations to comply …

Effects Of Stereotype Threat On Adolescents' Math And Visual-Spatial Performance., Lisa M. Didonato Jan 2013

Effects Of Stereotype Threat On Adolescents' Math And Visual-Spatial Performance., Lisa M. Didonato

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent research suggests that the gender gap in math performance is closing (Else-Quest, Hyde, & Linn, 2010; Hyde, Lindberg, Linn, Ellis, & Williams, 2008). However, negative stereotypes about girls’ math abilities are still widely held (Bhanot & Jovanovic, 2005; Bleeker & Jacobs, 2004). The gender gap in visual-spatial skills, or the ability to reason about and manipulate mental pictures, still exists in that boys outperform girls on visual-spatial tasks. The current study drew from literature on stereotype threat (i.e., the risk of confirming negative stereotypes about a specific group; Steele, 1997) to investigate the impact of negative math stereotypes on …

Teachers’ And Administrators’ Use Of Evidence Of Student Learning To Take Action: Conclusions Drawn From A Special Issue On Formative Assessment, Heidi Andrade, M. Christina Schneider Jan 2013

Teachers’ And Administrators’ Use Of Evidence Of Student Learning To Take Action: Conclusions Drawn From A Special Issue On Formative Assessment, Heidi Andrade, M. Christina Schneider

Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship

A teacher who collects and analyzes diverse types of evidence of a student’s learning and uses that information to either adjust instruction or provide feedback to the student is using formative classroom assessment (Brookhart, Moss, & Long, 2008). A central feature of formative assessment is a clear link between the results of an assessment and subsequent actions that lead to gains in student learning (Nichols, Meyers, & Burling, 2009; Wiliam, 2010). The impact of formative assessment is greatly diminished if teachers are not able to use evidence of student learning to determine next instructional steps and help students move their …

Toward Fostering Environmental Political Participation: Framing An Agenda For Environmental Education Research, Brett L. M. Levy, Michaela T. Zint Jan 2013

Toward Fostering Environmental Political Participation: Framing An Agenda For Environmental Education Research, Brett L. M. Levy, Michaela T. Zint

Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship

Scholars of environmental education (EE) and education for sustainable development (ESD) have been among the environmental leaders calling for individuals to become increasingly engaged in political action aimed at addressing environmental and sustainability issues. Few, however, have studied how educational experiences might foster greater environmental political engagement. Fortunately, there is a rich body of research in political science, psychology, and education that provides insights that EE and ESD scholars and educators can build on. Studies in these domains suggest, for example, that political efficacy (the belief that individuals’ actions can influence political processes) and political interest (individuals’ willingness to pay …

Examining Studies Of Inquiry-Based Learning In Three Fields Of Education: Sparking Generative Conversation, Brett L. M. Levy, Ebony Elizabeth Thomas, Kathryn Drago, Lesely A. Rex

Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship

Many educational researchers across the United States have found that inquiry-based learning (IBL) supports the development of deep, meaningful content knowledge. However, integrating inquiry-based learning into classroom practice has been challenging, in part because of contrasting conceptualizations and practices across educational fields. In this paper, we (1) describe differing conceptions of IBL, (2) summarize our own studies of IBL in three fields of education, (3) compare and contrast the processes and purposes of IBL in our studies and fields, and (4) suggest numerous opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaborations on IBL curriculum, teaching, and research that could bolster its inclusion in K-12 …
