An Honors Interdisciplinary Community-Based Research Course, David Dunbar, Melissa Terlecki, Nancy Watterson, Lisa Ratmansky
An Honors Interdisciplinary Community-Based Research Course, David Dunbar, Melissa Terlecki, Nancy Watterson, Lisa Ratmansky
Honors in Practice Online Archive
BACKGROUND
Community-Based Research (CBR) is an important extension and development of existing community service learning (Stoecker). CBR has as its emphasis research questions asked or needed by the community and, therefore, positions students working alongside community members with the purpose of solving a community issue or creating social change. In doing so, it also allows student development of research skills and methods. A hallmark of CBR is collaboration between a community and academicians through all steps in the course design process, including the crafting of the initial research planning stages, implementation of the research, and dissemination of results and knowledge …

Antidepressant Medications And Cognitive Functioning In Major Depressive Disorder, Rachel Kay
Antidepressant Medications And Cognitive Functioning In Major Depressive Disorder, Rachel Kay
Wayne State University Theses
Individuals with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) frequently experience cognitive decrements in addition to mood impairments. Ironically, antidepressant medications used to treat depression may have adverse effects on cognitive functioning. It is imperative to understand the relative cognitive costs of antidepressants when considering the treatment of MDD patients. Furthermore, observational studies of depression are challenged by problems of systematically confounded variables. Researchers are often faced with difficulties in managing this issue and opt to either ignore the problem, alter their sample, or use inappropriate statistical methods (e.g., Analysis of Covariance) due to a limited understanding of acceptable solutions. It is important …
Little Sewickley Creek: The Redesignation Process Of A High Quality Stream To An Exceptional Value Stream, Nathan Todd Reinhart
Little Sewickley Creek: The Redesignation Process Of A High Quality Stream To An Exceptional Value Stream, Nathan Todd Reinhart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has set designated uses for all of the 83,000 miles of waterways based on their quality. Only the highest quality streams are afforded the highest protection with a High Quality (HQ) or Exceptional Value (EV). Little Sewickley Creek is designated as a High Quality-Trout Stocking Fishery and may warrant redesignation as an Exceptional Value waterway. The aim of the study was to provide technical data on the stream to support an EV reclassification. The report has compiled previous data and collected new data in order to file a formal petition to the PA DEP. …
The Power Of Affective Factors (Self-Efficacy, Motivation And Gender) To Predict Chemistry Achievement With The Benefits Of Knowledge Surveys On Metacognition Level, Xin Wu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Self-efficacy, gender, and motivation are subjective predictors of students' academic achievement. Self-assessment prompted by knowledge surveys involves metacognition, i.e., students' awareness of how they learn. Knowledge surveys can be used to measure changes in students' achievement level and to assist students in content review and inspire reflection on one's ability to learn. In this work, I combined the above predictors into the survey to determine whether achievement in general chemistry can be foreseen. My proposed research will be conducted on 426 students enrolled in General Chemistry I classes (Chemistry for science majors) during a regular 15-week semester at Louisiana State …
Effect Of Blood Collection Practices On Emergency Department Blood Specimen Rejection Rates, Barbara K. Vernoski
Effect Of Blood Collection Practices On Emergency Department Blood Specimen Rejection Rates, Barbara K. Vernoski
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The practice of obtaining blood as part of the placement of a new peripheral venous access device (p-VAD) is a frequent practice in the emergency department (ED). Of the concerns related to this practice is the possibility of laboratory specimen rejection due to p-VAD catheter size, use of the wrong collection device, and the absence of a standardized collection process. The objective of this study, therefore, was to examine the effect of the use of evidence-based venipuncture and p-VAD blood collection protocols on the rejection rate of blood specimens drawn by staff in the adult areas of an urban academic …
Creative Adoption Of Ms Excel In Teaching And Learning Of Chemistry In Malaysia / Lee Sui Chin, Sui Chin Lee
Creative Adoption Of Ms Excel In Teaching And Learning Of Chemistry In Malaysia / Lee Sui Chin, Sui Chin Lee
Student Works (2010-2019)
This study concerns the creative use of MS Excel in teaching and learning chemistry in Malaysian secondary schools and universities. It is used to explain, explore and understand chemical concepts. Topics such as chemical kinetics, gas compressibility, distribution of molecular speed, period three elements, qualitative analysis, spectroscopy and chemical equilibrium were chosen from Form Six and first/second year university syllabus as examples. For the “qualitative analysis” workbook, a set of videos showing the reactions described are also provided to give the ‘intuitive feel’ of the experiments described in the worksheets. Simple functions in Excel such as ‘Active X’ control tool …
Combinatorial Evaluation Of In Vivo Distribution Of Polyanhydride Particle-Based Platforms For Vaccine Delivery, Latrisha K. Petersen, Lucas M. Huntimer, Katharine Walz, Amanda E. Ramer-Tait, Michael Wannemueler, Balaji Narasimhan
Combinatorial Evaluation Of In Vivo Distribution Of Polyanhydride Particle-Based Platforms For Vaccine Delivery, Latrisha K. Petersen, Lucas M. Huntimer, Katharine Walz, Amanda E. Ramer-Tait, Michael Wannemueler, Balaji Narasimhan
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Several challenges are associated with current vaccine strategies, including repeated immunizations, poor patient compliance, and limited approved routes for delivery, which may hinder induction of protective immunity. Thus, there is a need for new vaccine adjuvants capable of multi-route administration and prolonged antigen release at the site of administration by providing a depot within tissue. In this work, we designed a combinatorial platform to investigate the in vivo distribution, depot effect, and localized persistence of polyanhydride nanoparticles as a function of nanoparticle chemistry and administration route. Our observations indicated that the route of administration differentially affected tissue residence times. All …

Synthesis Of Adjacent-Bridged Benzo-Annelated Cyclam And Studies Of Mono- And Di-Benzo-Annelated Cyclam Derivatives, Amanuel B. Ghidey
Synthesis Of Adjacent-Bridged Benzo-Annelated Cyclam And Studies Of Mono- And Di-Benzo-Annelated Cyclam Derivatives, Amanuel B. Ghidey
Master's Theses and Capstones
A new synthetic methodology for the preparation of a novel adjacent-bridged benzoannelated cyclam is presented. This methodology utilizes reductive ring expansion followed by deallylation to give the desired adjacent-bridged benzo-annelated cyclam. This novel ligand is designed to complex metal cations with a trans coordination geometry. Derivatives of this ligand can be prepared by attaching pendant arms on the nitrogens which can aid as coordinating arms and linkers for potential use of this ligand as bifunctional chelator (BFC).
Coupling chemistry studies have been carried out in an attempt to increase the lipophilicity of a dibenzo-annelated tetracyclic bisaminal and to functionalize at …

(Nhc)-Pd(Ii) Complexes With Hydrophilic Nitrogen Ligands: Catalytic Properties In Neat Water, Hayati̇ Türkmen, Lütfi̇ye Gök, İbrahi̇m Kani̇, Beki̇r Çeti̇nkaya
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The cleavage reactions of the dimers [(NHC)PdX_2]_2 with hydrophilic N-donors, L, afforded the mixed-ligand complexes of the type trans-[(NHC)LPdX_2] (X = Cl or Br; NHC = 1,3-dialkylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene (BIm) or bis(imino)acenaphthene-annulated bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (BIAN-IPr); L = diethanolamine (DEA), morpholine (MOR), and 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid (3-PCA)). The new complexes (1--3) were characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods and the molecular structure of 1a was determined by X-ray diffraction studies. These complexes were applied in the Suzuki--Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of phenylboronic acid with aryl halides in neat water. The activities of catalysts were monitored by gas chromatography--flame ionization detector and nuclear magnetic resonance. Whereas …
Effect Of Laser Ablation Depth In Otolith Life History Scans, Renée R. Hoover, Cynthia M. Jones
Effect Of Laser Ablation Depth In Otolith Life History Scans, Renée R. Hoover, Cynthia M. Jones
OES Faculty Publications
Life history scans of fish otoliths are bringing new insight into the structure, connectivity, and movement of fish populations. Data obtained from such scans, however, possess in-herent limitations that have not yet been fully addressed or understood. For example, several investigators have noted delays in otolith elemental uptake that do not appear to reflect habitat exposure. We hypothesized that the 3-dimensional structure of otoliths may produce sampling artifacts in the results obtained from laser ablation scans. To test this hypothesis, we sampled sagittal otoliths from juvenile Atlantic croaker Micropogonias undulatus with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to obtain …
Trace-Element And Physical Response To Melt Percolation In Summit (Greenland) Snow, Gifford J. Wong, Robert L. Hawley, Eric R. Lutz, Erich C. Osterberg
Trace-Element And Physical Response To Melt Percolation In Summit (Greenland) Snow, Gifford J. Wong, Robert L. Hawley, Eric R. Lutz, Erich C. Osterberg
Dartmouth Scholarship
Surface melt on a glacier can perturb the glaciochemical record beyond the natural variability. While the centre of the Greenland ice sheet is usually devoid of surface melt, many high- Arctic and alpine ice cores document frequent summertime melt events. Current hypotheses interpreting melt-affected ice-core chemistry rely on preferential elution of certain major ions. However, the precise nature of chemistry alteration is unknown because it is difficult to distinguish natural variability from melt effects in a perennially melt-affected site. We use eight trace-element snow chemistry records recovered from Summit, Greenland, to study spatial variability and melt effects on insoluble trace …
Robust Methods For Construction Of Global Potential Energy Surfaces, Phalgun Lolur
Robust Methods For Construction Of Global Potential Energy Surfaces, Phalgun Lolur
Masters Theses
"This thesis is about the development of robust methods for construction of global potential energy surfaces to study the spectroscopy and dynamics of molecular systems. A potential energy surface represents the electronic energy of a molecule as a function of its geometry. This is central to how chemists view molecular systems in terms of motion across a rich energy landscape where barriers separate wells corresponding to different stable structures. The range of molecular distortions defines the potential energy surface. Computing the potential energy surface of a molecule has become a fundamental operation in modern theoretical chemistry studies. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation …
