Fate Of Nitrogen During Submarine Groundwater Discharge Into Long Island North Shore Embayments, Caitlin Young
Fate Of Nitrogen During Submarine Groundwater Discharge Into Long Island North Shore Embayments, Caitlin Young
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Long Island Sound experiences periods of hypoxia attributed to eutrophication, but the magnitude of nitrogen contributed to surface water via submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) entering Long Island's north shore embayments is not well characterized. The coastal aquifer, where fresh groundwater mixes with saline coastal water is termed the subterranean estuary (STE). Advective flow combined with sharp salinity and dissolved oxygen gradients make the STE a zone of intense geochemical cycling. However, the fate of nitrogen during transit through Long island embayment STEs is not well understood, particularly how sediment heterogeneity influences nitrogen attenuation in discharge zones. Nitrate attenuation mechanisms, principally …

Reactive Pathways In The Chlorobenzene–Ammonia Dimer Cation Radical: New Insights From Experiment And Theory, Scott A. Reid
Reactive Pathways In The Chlorobenzene–Ammonia Dimer Cation Radical: New Insights From Experiment And Theory, Scott A. Reid
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Building upon our recent studies of noncovalent interactions in chlorobenzene and bromobenzene clusters, in this work we focus on interactions of chlorobenzene (PhCl) with a prototypical N atom donor, ammonia (NH3). Thus, we have obtained electronic spectra of PhCl···(NH3)n (n = 1–3) complexes in the region of the PhCl monomer S0 −S1 (ππ*) transition using resonant 2-photon ionization (R2PI) methods combined with time-of-flight mass analysis. Consistent with previous studies, we find that upon ionization the PhCl···NH3 dimer cation radical reacts primarily via Cl atom loss. A second channel, HCl loss, is …

Allied Health Students’ Perceptions Of Class Difficulty: The Case Of Undergraduate Human Anatomy And Physiology Classes, Diana Sturges, Trent Mauner
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAP) course is required of all allied health majors. Students need to earn a grade of “C” or better, and many students find this class academically challenging. This study investigated allied health students’ perceptions of what makes the undergraduate class difficult. Methods: A 28-question survey targeted 403 students enrolled in three HAP sections taught by the same instructor. Results: Students returned 279 surveys (68% return rate). Qualitative and quantitative data supported a three factor model in making this class difficult: discipline, student, and teaching related factors. Students consider that discipline factors are more important …
Distributed Scaffolding: Wiki Collaboration Among Latino High School Chemistry Students, Edwin Duncan O'Sullivan
Distributed Scaffolding: Wiki Collaboration Among Latino High School Chemistry Students, Edwin Duncan O'Sullivan
Dissertations (1934 -)
The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate if wiki collaboration among Latino high school chemistry students can help reduce the science achievement gap between Latino and White students. The study was a quasi-experimental pre/post control group mixed-methods design. It used three intact sections of a high school chemistry course. The first research question asked if there is a difference in academic achievement between a treatment and control group on selected concepts from the topics of bonding, physical changes, and chemical changes, when Latino high school chemistry students collaborate on a quasi-natural wiki project. Overall results for all three …

Stabilizing Nanostructured Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Cathode With Atomic Layer Deposition, Yunhui Gong, Diego Palacio, Xueyan Song, Rajankumar L. Patel, Xinhua Liang
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We demonstrate that the highly active but unstable nanostructured intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell cathode, La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ (LSCo), can retain its high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity with exceptional stability for 4000 h at 700 C by overcoating its surfaces with a conformal layer of nanoscale ZrO2 films through atomic layer deposition (ALD). The benefits from the presence of the nanoscale ALD-ZrO2 overcoats are remarkable: a factor of 19 and 18 reduction in polarization area-specific resistance and degradation rate over the pristine sample, respectively. The unique multifunctionality of the ALD-derived nanoscaled ZrO2 overcoats, …

Strengthening Stem Performance And Persistence : Influence Of Undergraduate Teaching Assistants On Entry-Level Stem Students., Stephanie B. Philipp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Increasing retention of students in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) programs of study is a priority for many colleges and universities. This study examines an undergraduate teaching assistant (UTA) program implemented in a general chemistry course for STEM majors to provide peer learning assistance to entry-level students. This study measured the content knowledge growth of UTAs compared to traditional graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) over the semester, and described the development of peer learning assistance skills of the UTAs as an outcome of semester-long training and support from both science education and STEM faculty. Impact of the UTA program on …
Development And Evaluation Of A Thermochemistry Concept Inventory For College-Level General Chemistry, David A. Wren
Development And Evaluation Of A Thermochemistry Concept Inventory For College-Level General Chemistry, David A. Wren
Dissertations
The research presented in this dissertation culminated in a 10-item Thermochemistry Concept Inventory (TCI). The development of the TCI can be divided into two main phases: qualitative studies and quantitative studies. Both phases focused on the primary stakeholders of the TCI, college–level general chemistry instructors and students. Each phase was designed to collect evidence for the validity of the interpretations and uses of TCI testing data. A central use of TCI testing data is to identify student conceptual misunderstandings, which are represented as incorrect options of multiple– choice TCI items. Therefore, quantitative and qualitative studies focused heavily on collecting evidence …
Design, Development, And Psychometric Analysis Of A General, Organic, And Biological Chemistry Topic Inventory Based On The Identified Main Chemistry Topics Relevant To Nursing Clinical Practice, Corina E. Brown
Dissertations
This two-stage study focused on the undergraduate nursing course that covers topics in general, organic, and biological (GOB) chemistry. In the first stage, the central objective was to identify the main concepts of GOB chemistry relevant to the clinical practice of nursing. The collection of data was based on open-ended interviews of both nursing and chemistry teaching faculty as well as practicing nurses. From the resulting interviews, three themes emerged: topics that were Important--had a direct application in nursing clinical practice; topics that were Foundational--not directly important for nursing clinical practice but facilitated the understanding of the important topics; and …

Characterization Of The Gas-Sensing Protein Cooa, Teryn Gehred, Jessica Lyza
Characterization Of The Gas-Sensing Protein Cooa, Teryn Gehred, Jessica Lyza
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This research aims to characterize the binding specificity of heme proteins to various gas signal molecules. Heme proteins in the gas-sensing family bind to specific gas signal molecules, causing a certain biological function to be activated or deactivated. In this study, variants of the carbon monoxide sensing heme protein CooA from the bacteria R.rubrum and C. hydrogenoformans are compared. Key differences in signal binding specificity and heme environment configuration will be investigated. This is done by using site-directed mutagenesis to alter the heme environment, isolating the CooA proteins through protein purification, and analyzing the isolated products through DNA binding assays. …

Erosive Arthritis And Hepatic Granuloma Formation Induced By Peptidoglycan Polysaccharide In Rats Is Aggravated By Prasugrel Treatment., Analia E Garcia, Mario C Rico, Elisabetta Liverani, Raul A Dela Cadena, Paul F. Bray, Satya P Kunapuli
Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research
Administration of the thienopyridine P2Y12 receptor antagonist, clopidogrel, increased the erosive arthritis induced by peptidoglycan polysaccharide (PG-PS) in rats or by injection of the arthritogenic K/BxN serum in mice. To determine if the detrimental effects are caused exclusively by clopidogrel, we evaluated prasugrel, a third-generation thienopyridine pro-drug, that contrary to clopidogrel is mostly metabolized into its active metabolite in the intestine. Prasugrel effects were examined on the PG-PS-induced arthritis rat model. Erosive arthritis was induced in Lewis rats followed by treatment with prasugrel for 21 days. Prasugrel treated arthritic animals showed a significant increase in the inflammatory response, compared with …
The Versatility Of Ether-Bridged Cycloadducts Towards The Synthesis Of Complex Natural Products, Harold Deshaun Cooper
The Versatility Of Ether-Bridged Cycloadducts Towards The Synthesis Of Complex Natural Products, Harold Deshaun Cooper
Doctoral Dissertations
The presence of a heterocyclic moiety can be observed in many of today’s bioactive natural products. One of the most commonly observed is furan, an aromatic five-membered ring containing an oxygen atom. Furan is a simple compound, yet versatile enough to be used as a synthetic synthon leading to complex structures such as the antioxidant Phelligridin G and the antibacterial agent Platensimycin. In the former, it is spiro-fused to the five-membered carbocycle of the 6-5-5 tricyclic domain while in the latter it makes up the ether-bridged cycloadduct of the hydrophobic cage. Conventionally, furan can undergo cycloadditions in the presence of …

Climate Evolution Of The Antarctic Peninsula Over The Last 1,000 Years : An Environmental Magnetism Analysis Of Two High Resolution Sediment Cores, Brendan Reilly
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Two marine sediment cores from very different depositional environments, off the coast of western and northeastern Graham Land, Antarctic Peninsula (AP), record high resolution climatic records of the last 1,000 years. This study finds evidence in the sedimentary magnetic signature for a regional shift from warmer to colder climatic conditions around 1100-1400 AD. The first core, from middle Barilari Bay, western AP, displays a shift from seasonally open marine conditions to sub/proximal ice shelf ca. 1100 AD, with evidence for multiple grounding line advances in the magnetic mineral distributions during the first half of the last millennium. Prior to the …
Where Does The Water Come From? A Temporal Geochemical Characterization Of Water Sources In The Lives Of Storms, Mallory Ringham
Where Does The Water Come From? A Temporal Geochemical Characterization Of Water Sources In The Lives Of Storms, Mallory Ringham
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
An analysis of the ion chemistry, δ18O, and δ2H values of precipitation may allow for the characterization of their water sources. As water evaporates, it retains a signature of its source in the ions that it carries and in the amount of fractionation of the oxygen and hydrogen isotopes. Precipitation samples for coastal, lake effect, and continental sources were collected over the months of October- January in Syracuse, New York throughout the duration of each storm, including one hurricane, one thunderstorm, two lake effect snowstorms, and seven rain events. These samples were run through IC, ICP-OES, …

The Production Of Organic Nitrates In Portland Oregon And The Columbia River Gorge, Holly Ann Neill
Dissertations and Theses
This work studied the production of aerosol-phase organic nitrates in both Portland and the Columbia River Gorge (CRG). Ozone and NOx species were investigated for correlation with organic nitrate aerosol, as they function as precursors to the production of organic nitrates. These ambient gas-phase measurements were collected in the same locations as high-volume (Hi-Vol) filters samples, in an urban and rural gorge setting to investigate correlations at the origin of the pollution plume and downwind. A novel Soxhlet extraction method for Hi-Vol filters was developed based on literature and EPA standard methods. Analysis for nitrate production was done by …
