Spatial Analysis Predictive Model Map For Reintroduced Bighorn Sheep Winter Range Areas Along The Wasatch Front Mountains, Jericho C. Whiting, Dr. Jerran T. Flinders
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) are native to the central and northern mountain ranges in Utah. They were historically abundant and extensively used by the resident Native Americans. Due to various anthropological influences, most northern populations were presumed extinct by the 1930s with only several scattered sightings reported until the 1960s (Karpowitz and Stewart 2000).
What Does It Mean To Be A “Materially Attuned” Practitioner?, Maiko Tsutsumi
What Does It Mean To Be A “Materially Attuned” Practitioner?, Maiko Tsutsumi
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper reports on research in progress that explores the potential role the materiality of things plays as a tool for the critical understanding of the human relationship with man-made objects. The paper argues that many designers habitually engage with production and consumption of meanings more through the materiality of things than words and symbols. It proposes a hypothesis that materiality is a key to understanding the context, knowledge and information the man-made objects may “embody”. Through the case study of an exhibition, the paper examines the ways in which this embodiment may be facilitated. Referring to Heidegger’s notion of …

When And Where I Enter: Teaching The Concepts Of Critical Pedagogy And Applied Sociology Through Study Abroad Programs, Karen Young, Martha Hughes
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Participation of students in study abroad programs which focus on teaching the core concepts and principles in a different country enhances a student's understanding and appreciation of the host country's culture and brings alive the concept of globalization in a way that no other classroom experience in America could ever do. The University System of Georgia's European Council study abroad programs have for years offered in-depth immersion programs which have proven to be exciting, effective and reliable models for increasing a student's awareness and actively stimulating their capacity for higher learning, often leading to an increase in participatory community activism …

Considering Colonoware From The Barnes Plantation: A Proposed Colonoware Typology For Northern Virginia Colonial Sites, Andrew S. Veech
Considering Colonoware From The Barnes Plantation: A Proposed Colonoware Typology For Northern Virginia Colonial Sites, Andrew S. Veech
Northeast Historical Archaeology
Colonoware vessels and vessel fragments have been recovered from numerous colonial and antebellum sites in Virginia, and the number of newly reported sites increases with each excavation season. What this growing corpus of Virginia colonoware presently requires, however, is an adequate, standardized typology for pottery classification, at both site-specific and regional scales. Here, the colonoware typology designed during analysis of collections from the Barnes Plantation (44FX1326), a mid-18th century tobacco plantation in Fairfax County, Virginia, is explained and offered for use elsewhere. Colonware sherds from contemporaneous northern Virginia plantation sites exhibit many of the same charcteristics as those found at …
Cellulose Nitrate Plastic (Celluloid) In Archaeological Assemblages: Identification And Care, Megan E. Springate
Cellulose Nitrate Plastic (Celluloid) In Archaeological Assemblages: Identification And Care, Megan E. Springate
Northeast Historical Archaeology
Invented in the mid-19th century, cellulose nitrate is commonly regarded as the earliest synthetic polymer or plastic. As increasing numbers of historical sites dating from the mid-1800s are excavated, cellulose nitrate objects are more frequently found in archaeological assemblages. The inherent instability of cellulose nitrate makes proper handling, storage, and display conditions vital to the longevity of recovered objects. In this paper, the composition, manufacture, and means of identifying cellulose nitrate are summarized. The processes of degradation and means of slowing those processes are elaborated, as well.

A Preliminary Report On The Excavation Of A 19th-Century Derelict Vessel In Cape Neddick, Maine: The Southern New Jersey Coasting Schooner Annabella, Stefan H. Claesson
Northeast Historical Archaeology
In 1995, the Insistute of Maritime History conducted the archaeological investigation of a 19th-century coasting schooner, Annabella, in Cape Neddick, Maine. This type of craft, though ubiquitous on the eastern seaboard in the 19th century, has not been documented in an archaeological setting to date in New England. Maine played a pivotal role in America's economy, supplying the southern states and Caribbean Islands with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of raw materials such as timber, stone, ice, lime, and agricultural goods. This vessel was primarily involved in the transportation of cordwood along the east coast of the United States. Its heavily-built, …
"Promiscuous Smoking": Interpreting Gender And Tobacco Use In The Archaeological Record, Lauren J. Cook
"Promiscuous Smoking": Interpreting Gender And Tobacco Use In The Archaeological Record, Lauren J. Cook
Northeast Historical Archaeology
Viewed as a social act, tobacco use is a rich area for archaeological inquiry. The act of tobacco consumption has historically conveyed meaning, communicating self-perceptions of class, ethnicity, and gender roles. Tobacco consumption has also resulted in the use and discard of material culture, often in large quantities, making it of particular interest to archaeologists. The examination of tobacco use as a field for the negotiation of gender roles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries provides an excellent basis for a critical examination of an "archaeology of gender." The constellation of meanings surrounding actions and motivations that emerges …

Anatomy Of An Almshouse Complex, Sherene Baugher, Edward J. Lenik
Northeast Historical Archaeology
The focus of this paper is to determine the age and function of a partial building foundation uncovered during archaeological testing in City Hall Park, New York City. The authors use evidence from historical maps, prints, and documents, as well as archaeological evidence, to determine the function of the building. The evidence suggests that the foundation is an outbuilding that was part of an 18th-century colonial almshouse complex. The foundation appears to be the remains of the almshouse kitchen.

Virgin Anasazi Research And Exhibition, Samantha Annette Bonser, Dr. Marti L. Allen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Rise Up from Fragments features the largest collection of Virgin Anasazi artifacts from one site. Until recently, this prehistoric group had remained in the shadow of more visible branches of the Anasazi such as Mesa Verde and Chaco Canyon. Now, it is fast becoming the focus for archaeologist researching in the southwest. Located at a natural crossroads near Kanab, Utah, the artifacts from the Talbot site offer new insights to the Virgin branch of the Anasazi and their interactions with the groups around them.

Rotational Geometry As A Teaching Tool: Applying The Work Of Giorgio Scarpa, Pino Trogu
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper focuses on a teaching unit in drawing for design that uses and applies Giorgio Scarpa’s principles and methods in rotational geometry, as put forth in his book Modelli di Geometria Rotatoria, (Models of rotational geometry, 1978), and tests their validity through the construction of physical models built by the students. These models are derived from the sectioning of regular polyhedra such as the cube. The resulting modules can be re-configured into closed or open “chains” capable of folding back into their original minimal volume. This process has parallels in geometric folding, such as in linkages, origami, and polyhedra …
A Qualitative Study Of Community Home-Based Care And Antiretroviral Adherence In Swaziland, Robin Root, Alan Whiteside
A Qualitative Study Of Community Home-Based Care And Antiretroviral Adherence In Swaziland, Robin Root, Alan Whiteside
Publications and Research
Introduction Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has rendered HIV and AIDS a chronic condition for individuals in many parts of the world. Adherence, however, is integral to achieving chronicity. Studies have shown both relatively high ART adherence rates in sub-Saharan Africa and the importance of community home-based care (CHBC) to facilitating this process. In light of diminished HIV and AIDS funding globally and increased reliance on CHBC throughout Africa, a better understanding of how CHBC may strengthen ART adherence is essential to improving patients’ quality of life, tending to the needs of care supporters and achieving healthier populations. Methods This article reports …

Accessing Indigenous Knowledge Resources In Libraries And The Problems Encountered By Librarians Managing Ik In Oyo State, Nigeria, Idowu Adegbilero Adeniyi, Roselyn E. Subair Mrs
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In this era of knowledge economy, a time where it is difficult to ignore any type of knowledge system, it is incumbent on librarians and libraries to reduce the gap between the use of indigenous knowledge owned by local people and the western scientific knowledge. The library for users is a democracy, and there is no reason it should enhance apartheid among knowledge systems and/or resources. LIS professionals all over the world have demonstrated commendable initiatives managing IK though not without attendant challenges. This paper reports the study of how libraries in Oyo State, Nigeria provide access to IK resources …
