Intercultural Training: A Thesis Project, Laura Snyder

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the scholarly journals and literature of intercultural competency, intercultural communication, and the communication theories examining culture shock, cross-cultural adaptation, immersion techniques, and training methods used in multicultural competence. It then presents intercultural training modules with the ambition to be adopted and incorporated into all intercultural expatriation trainings utilized both by private individuals, as well as international businesses and government programs with employees relocating internationally. The training modules are specifically directed at learners who need to know about the cultural climate, rules, and communication expectations of Singapore.

Youtube And You: Using Cybernetics To Optimize Self-Promotion On Youtube, Janay Shari Johnson

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores self-promotion on YouTube. YouTube is a popular video sharing website specifically tailored for easy use and global connection. If a video is posted with the right combination of elements, it can become an instant phenomenon overnight. The ability to reach millions of people worldwide so quickly makes YouTube an advertising powerhouse. The most advantageous component of the video sharing site is that it is free to use. Anyone from any income level or background with video making capabilities can produce and post videos. In this day and age with built-in cameras on laptops and desktops, most members …

The Faculty/Staff Communication Divide: An Ethnographic Look Inside A Community College, Jodi Lynn Weber Jan 2013

The Faculty/Staff Communication Divide: An Ethnographic Look Inside A Community College, Jodi Lynn Weber

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the communication divides that exist between faculty and staff at a rural community college in Texas. Through the use of survey data, personal interviews and ethnographic observation, the researcher gained significant insight into the communication culture of one institution. The theoretical framework for this study is built largely upon the group communication concepts of Bormann (1983) and Taylor and Altman (1975). Specifically, the study looks for evidence of Bormann’s (1983) symbolic convergence theory and Taylor and Altman’s (1975) social penetration theory. The philosophical framework for this thesis is grounded in Benhabib’s (1993) idea of the generalized versus …

What Changes Await Local Tv News?, Stephanie Ann Vigil Jan 2013

What Changes Await Local Tv News?, Stephanie Ann Vigil

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Over the years, local television news stations across the nation have seen a dramatic decrease in viewership. Much like newspapers, fewer people are relying on television news for several reasons. Two of the biggest culprits are the age of new technology and social media. These two factors alone have reprogrammed people’s daily habits, changing the landscape of television news viewership and resulting in uncertain times at local television news stations. Few studies have been done on the future of local television news. Of the studies that have been conducted, it is clear to see that local news is still relevant …

Cultural Performance And Organizational Transformation: A Case Study Of The Utah State University Football Program, Marques Chavez Jan 2013

Cultural Performance And Organizational Transformation: A Case Study Of The Utah State University Football Program, Marques Chavez

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Methods of communication are often a significant reason for achieving organizational transformation. The primary aim of this study is to explain a case of organizational transformation by examining the cultural performances of organizational members—particularly the performance of ritual. The Utah State University football program served as the case study while qualitative interviews and narrative research provided the methodology for gathering and analyzing data. Communication expressed in the performance of ritual significantly contributed to fostering an environment of unity and trust within the organization which, in turn, spurred transformation. While rituals were key to fostering this environment, true sincerity from leadership …

Technology Use In A Virtual World To Build Organizational Culture And Identity, Tim Carroll Jan 2013

Technology Use In A Virtual World To Build Organizational Culture And Identity, Tim Carroll

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Organizations are embracing agile work environments for their employees more and more every day. This thesis explores the ability to create and maintain organizational culture in a virtual world through technology use. As more of these organizations move to a virtual workplace it is becoming more imperative to find ways to connect these virtual employees together as peers and to the organization as a whole. This communication audit is formed using the cultural approach to organizational theory, by Geertz and Pacanowsky, and uses surveys as well as interviews to assess how effectively organizational culture is expressed and maintained through the …

A Thomistic Understanding Of Happiness, Christian Stephens

Theses

Imagine that extra-terrestrial researchers land on Earth with the mission of studying humanity. As part of their expedition they wish to sit in on one University Degree, but are unsure of which degree to choose. So they decide to carry out a survey, asking each individual human what it is they want in life. Based on the results, the aliens will then study the appropriate field. After conducting the survey and processing the data, they come to the conclusion that humans highly regard this thing called happiness.1 The Head Researchers unanimously decide that a ‘degree in happiness’ is in order. …

Muted Women In American Political Discourse: Quieting The Loud Silence, Constance Michelle Skingel Jan 2013

Muted Women In American Political Discourse: Quieting The Loud Silence, Constance Michelle Skingel

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the way women are denied an equal voice in American politics through disparities in our language structure and overt sexism. This thesis begins with a review of the literature which discusses the need for an equitable and just society and how the underlying structure of our language system is flawed in such a way that it subjugates women and inhibits the development of such a society. This is followed by a brief summary of why it is necessary for us to examine this societal disparity from the perspective of women themselves. This thesis uses a pentadic analysis …

Women's Historiography In Late Medieval European Literature: Giovanni Boccaccio, Geoffrey Chaucer, And Christine De Pizan, Eva M. Jones Jan 2013

Women's Historiography In Late Medieval European Literature: Giovanni Boccaccio, Geoffrey Chaucer, And Christine De Pizan, Eva M. Jones

Open Access Dissertations

Women’s Historiography in Late Medieval European Literature: Giovanni Boccaccio, Geoffrey Chaucer, and Christine de Pizan considers the ways in which the textual generation of women’s historiography correlated with women’s social access in late medieval Europe, 1361-1405. I examine Boccaccio's authoritative and Latin Famous Women (1361) and its reworkings in Chaucer’s The Legend of Good Women (1386-1394) and Christine de Pizan’s The Book of the City of Ladies (1405). I argue that Chaucer’s and de Pizan’s vernacular versions revise Boccaccio’s exclusive Latin, which demonstrates a correlation between the consistent documentation of women and possibilities for women’s social opportunities. Moreover, de Pizan’s …

Deconstructing Corporate Governance: The Mechanics Of Trusting, René Reich-Graefe Jan 2013

Deconstructing Corporate Governance: The Mechanics Of Trusting, René Reich-Graefe

Faculty Scholarship

The phenomenon of trust among firm participants is a much neglected academic inquiry in corporate governance research and the theory of the firm. This Article elaborates on the comparatively small sample of existing legal research on the intersection of trust and corporate governance and tries to interrupt the selective (in-)attention given to the philosophical, psychological, political, sociological, economic, and legal phenomenon that is our individual as well as collective, everyday trust (or distrust) in the functionality and explainability of the world tomorrow in accordance with our preferences of today and our experiences of the past. Trust—as a phenomenon—is a concrete …

Making Room For A Restorative Response To Conflict: Challenging The Retributive Paradigm In American Journalism, Cynthia Duggan Mwenja Jan 2013

Making Room For A Restorative Response To Conflict: Challenging The Retributive Paradigm In American Journalism, Cynthia Duggan Mwenja

All ETDs from UAB

Reactions to current events from across the political spectrum highlight a journalistic retributive narrative framework that is ubiquitous in the American media. News articles from the childhood obesity debate support claims that journalists on both left and right interpret this story - and by implication, all stories - through a retributive cultural lens. Burke's rhetorical analysis tool, dramatism, is used to examine the rhetoric on all sides of the issue and demonstrate the common retributive aspects of the narratives, regardless of the social or political orientations of the writers and their affiliations. The retributive narrative is connected to American justice …

The Criminalization Of Pregnant Substance Abusers And The Implications For Reproductive Rights, Brittani Mclemore Jan 2013

The Criminalization Of Pregnant Substance Abusers And The Implications For Reproductive Rights, Brittani Mclemore

Theses & ETDs

This thesis will explore the criminalization of pregnant substance abuse and the effects on perceptions of motherhood. Specifically, it employs Foucault's theory of biopower to understand how legislation, the prison-industrial complex, and the medicalization of pregnancy allow the state to define and assume responsibility for "unfit mothers." Such occurrences are portrayed as operating for the benefit of the fetus. However, I posit that these initiatives are better understood as responses to economic and social anxieties. I then assess the implications of criminalizing pregnant substance abuse for reproductive rights.

Foot Dimensions As A Tool For Gender Determination In Kenyan Adults, Maureen W. Waithaka Jan 2013

Foot Dimensions As A Tool For Gender Determination In Kenyan Adults, Maureen W. Waithaka

Master of Medicine in Anatomic Pathology

Introduction: Anthropometry has gained popularity over the years as a reliable method to determine gender. In forensic investigation, there are cases where gender cannot be readily determined using anatomy such as in mass casualty disasters with dismemberment and commingling of limbs. Kenyan descriptive data of foot dimensions is lacking as are formulae for estimating gender. Proven differences in foot dimensions across races prevent application of formula obtained using different populations necessitating generation of local data and formulae. Objectives: To describe the foot lengths, breaths and navicular heights of a representative adult Kenyan population, both male and female, and derive from …

Restorative Justice To Supplement Deterrence-Based Punishment: An Empirical Study And Theoretical Reconceptualization Of The Epa's Power Plant Enforcement Initiative, 2000-2011, Michael L. Rustad, Thomas H. Koenig, Erica R. Ferreira Jan 2013

Restorative Justice To Supplement Deterrence-Based Punishment: An Empirical Study And Theoretical Reconceptualization Of The Epa's Power Plant Enforcement Initiative, 2000-2011, Michael L. Rustad, Thomas H. Koenig, Erica R. Ferreira

Oklahoma Law Review

From the late 1970s to the end of the 1990s, electricity producers modified and operated coal-fired power plants in violation of the Environment Protection Agency’s (EPA) permitting requirements, creating widespread air quality degradation. The EPA’s policy of lax oversight ended in 1999 when it launched a large, coordinated enforcement effort. The 2012 Republican presidential candidates all denounced this more vigilant EPA as engaging in economic terrorism through “sue and settle” tactics that amount to backdoor regulation. This article evaluates federal environmental enforcement, drawing upon objective data from our empirical study of EPA permitting violation settlements for coal-fired power plants entered …

Technology Criticism In The Classroom (Chapter In The Nature Of Technology), John Spencer Jan 2013

Technology Criticism In The Classroom (Chapter In The Nature Of Technology), John Spencer

Faculty Publications - College of Education

I first heard about a tragedy in Tucson, not from major television news networks, but from a direct message sent by a politically-active friend who was attending the political gathering where a mass shooting took place, including the shooting of an Arizona congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords. While the television news sputtered around trying to offer details (initially wrongly claiming that she was dead, likely from pressure to be the first to report big news), I found myself reading Google News, piecing together Facebook posts, e-mailing friends and reading Twitter updates.

Believing In The Gift: A Case Of Successful Relationships Of Exchange In The Colombian Amazon, Carlos D. Londoño Sulkin Jan 2013

Believing In The Gift: A Case Of Successful Relationships Of Exchange In The Colombian Amazon, Carlos D. Londoño Sulkin

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Since the late 70’s, the Colombian anthropologist Juan Alvaro Echeverri has logged more than five years in Uitoto and closely related communities in the Colombian Amazon. His relationships with individuals there have been long-lived and surprisingly successful, in contrast with the often-noted disappointment of many philanthropically oriented outsiders—NGO agents, anthropologists, missionaries, government personnel—who come to find ‘their Indians’ to be too materialistic and demanding, and of the Indians who cease to find these would-be philanthropists generous, desirable, or even interesting interlocutors. This essay, meant to be both an ethnographic and theoretical exposition on the forms and implications of substance exchange …

Revealing Fires And Rich Diets: Macro- And Micro-Archaeobotanical Analysis At The Hatahara Site, Central Amazonia, Caroline Fernandes Caromano, Leandro Matthews Cascon, Eduardo Góes Neves, Rita Scheel-Ybert

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Numerous questions in Amazonian archaeology place great emphasis on the relationships between human groups and their environments, traditionally drawing inferences from ethnographic analogies. This analytical expedient is justified by the supposedly weak preservation potential of plant remains in the Amazonian environment; however, it is also rooted in a lack of collecting and systematic research of such botanical remains. This paper presents results of archaeobotanical studies undertaken at the Hatahara site, located in Central Amazonia. Analysis of macro and microbotanical remains produced direct evidence of relationships between humans and plants in pre-colonial Central Amazonia. Observation of microbotanical assemblages extracted from artifacts …

A Chronology Of The Introduction Of Domesticated Plants In Central Brazil, Myrtle P. Shock, Renato Kipnis, Lucas Bueno, Francini M. Silva Jan 2013

A Chronology Of The Introduction Of Domesticated Plants In Central Brazil, Myrtle P. Shock, Renato Kipnis, Lucas Bueno, Francini M. Silva

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

The paleoethnobotanical analysis of archaeological remains from two sites in central Brazil provides chronological data for the introduction of domesticated plants to the region. The sites of Lapa dos Bichos and Lapa Pintada, located in the northern portion of the state of Minas Gerais, are within rock shelters in limestone rock outcroppings. The dry conditions at the sites preserved both burnt and unburnt organic materials, including the seeds and fruits that were analyzed in this study. The chronological documentation for the introduction of domesticated plants is based on relative chronology from excavation stratigraphy and radiocarbon dating. The domesticated plants found …

"Conspicuous Consumption:" Germs And Climate Cures In Denver, 1882-1915, Sydney Rene Gwinn

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis argues that the health-seeker’s quest for climatic cures persisted after the germ theory of disease began to alter medical approaches to tuberculosis after its announcement in 1882. Buoyed by anti-modern sentiments and a lack of effective medicinal interventions, physicians continued to recommend that tuberculosis patients travel to Denver to seek recovery in a healthier climate. In turn, Denver’s polity and public health approaches were shaped by the influences of the migration of tuberculosis patients to the city. After 1882, new approaches focused on sanitation and isolation began to take hold among physicians and public health reformers who worked …
