Nietzsche And Darwin, Babette Babich Jan 2013

Nietzsche And Darwin, Babette Babich

Working Papers

Abstract

I argue against the popular view of Nietzsche as Darwinist and I concur with other Nietzsche scholars who have also noted that other authors worked in Nietzsche’s thinking in association with Darwin, not only Spencer and Malthus but also Roux and Haeckel among others which also for Nietzsche included Empedocles and other ancient scientists. Nietzsche offers plain condemnation of Darwin’s views but he is also often associated with Darwin owing to Darwin’s racism and his own vision of rank-order. I conclude with an emphasis on style and Nietzsche’s reading of antiquity to highlight the distinction he sought to make …

Transformations In Body And Cuisine In Rural Yucatan, Mexico, Lauren Wynne Jan 2013

Transformations In Body And Cuisine In Rural Yucatan, Mexico, Lauren Wynne

Anthropology and Sociology Faculty Publications

Many twentieth-century ethnographic accounts of the rural Yucatec Maya analyze the accruement of culinary knowledge as a crucial part of the process of socialization, by which children become adults (e.g., Gaskins 2003; Greene 2002). Indeed, in the rural town of Juubche, fairly predictable culinary milestones continue to mark the lives of girls and women. Some young women, however, are using their access to new foods and related knowledge to challenge both local hierarchies of expertise and ideologies of racial difference. For many young women in Juubche, there is a link between consuming new foods and identifying oneself with larger Yucatecan …

Detailed Phosphorus Geochemistry Of Sediments From The Equatorial Proto-Atlantic At Demerara Rise During Oceanic Anoxic Event 2, Mary Elizabeth Smith Jan 2013

Detailed Phosphorus Geochemistry Of Sediments From The Equatorial Proto-Atlantic At Demerara Rise During Oceanic Anoxic Event 2, Mary Elizabeth Smith

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Oceanic anoxic events (OAE) are associated with increased organic matter burial and possibly caused by major changes in marine nutrient cycling. Phosphorus (P) limits biological productivity on geologic timescales, thus detailed P geochemistry may provide insight into the role of nutrients in the formation of these organic-rich deposits. P geochemical records that the span the OAE across the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary (CTB, ~94 Ma), known as OAE 2, are rare, and detailed P geochemical records are usually limited to relatively shallow settings. In this study, a sequential extraction (SEDEX) technique was employed to evaluate the sedimentary distribution of P (oxide-associated, authigenic, …

Power Relations In The Samaria Ostraca, Roger S. Nam Jan 2013

Power Relations In The Samaria Ostraca, Roger S. Nam

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Whereas recent studies have correctly identified a clan-based social structure presumed in the place names of the Samaria Ostraca, an analysis of the power relations within these structures has not been sufficiently developed. Approaching the evidence from a consumption perspective of the commodities for yn yšn (‘aged wine’) and šmn r¬½ (‘washed oil’) suggests that the economic significance of these items is tied to complex social interactions. Specifically, both archaeological and ethnographic studies associate such prestige commodities with elite feasting and ceremonial displays. By gifting these items, the central power engaged in a form of ‘competitive feasting’ to secure political …

Whose Sense Of Place? A Political Ecology Of Amenity Development, Patrick T. Hurley Jan 2013

Whose Sense Of Place? A Political Ecology Of Amenity Development, Patrick T. Hurley

Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

Using a political ecology framework, this chapter examines the ways in which sense of place and amenity migration contribute to alternative residential development, which relies on uneven use of conservation subdivision features in the American West. Using case studies from Central Oregon, this chapter demonstrates how senses of place and developer decision-making are tied to wider political economic changes. It highlights the roles that amenity migrants and developers, two groups that are sometimes identical, play in landscape transformations that simultaneously draw on a particular sense of place and commodify landscapes in new ways.

Spirit Politics: Radical Abolitionists And The Dead End Of Spiritualism, Robert Nelson Jan 2013

Spirit Politics: Radical Abolitionists And The Dead End Of Spiritualism, Robert Nelson

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

On June 30, 1858, abolitionist Parker Pillsbury wrote William Lloyd Garrison and readers of the Liberator that he had “just returned from attending one of the largest and most important Reformatory Conventions ever held in this or any other country.” In his report on the “Free Convention” held at Rutland, Vermont, Parker praised the “character and quality” and the “large brains and full hearts” of the convention participants. “The most numerous class” among these participants, he noted, were Spiritualists. Spiritualism had burst on the American scene a decade earlier, quickly attracting thousands of adherents who believed that communication and communion …

Crossing From Hearing To Deaf Worlds: Hearing Border Crossers As Participatory Designers In Healthcare Instruction, Yin Wah Brenda Kreher Jan 2013

Crossing From Hearing To Deaf Worlds: Hearing Border Crossers As Participatory Designers In Healthcare Instruction, Yin Wah Brenda Kreher

Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation - Dissertations

The Deaf population faces substantial communication barriers in accessing quality health care. Many healthcare professionals struggle to communicate with Deaf individuals because they have little awareness of how to interact with these patients in culturally sensitive ways. This study sought to understand the perspectives and experiences of hearing border-crossers -- hearing people who cross "borders," figuratively, to interact and communicate with Deaf people. Hearing border crossers hold useful knowledge that will shed light in facilitating communication between Deaf patients and hearing healthcare professionals. Using symbolic interactionism as the epistemological framework, qualitative interviews were conducted with three clusters of hearing border …

The Forgotten Farmworkers Of Apopka, Florida: Prospects For Collaborative Research And Activism To Assist African-American Former Farmworkers, Rachel Newcomb

Faculty Publications

Anthropology’s crisis of representation of the 1980s has given way to a millennial crisis of involvement. As neoliberal policies proliferate and intensify wealth and social inequalities, anthropologists have considered ways to conduct engaged research that can contribute to social justice. One possibility is the prospect of collaboration between anthropologists and activists. In this article we examine our own collaborative research with an anthropologist and activist organization. We highlight benefits of long-term community engagement projects for activist-oriented community partners and students.

Culturally Responsive Methodologies At Work In Education Settings, Mere Berryman, Suzanne Soohoo, Ann Nevin, Te Arani Barrett, Therese Ford, Debora Joy Nodelman, Norma Valenzuela, Anna Wilson

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe culturally responsive methodology as a way to develop researchers. The aim is to illuminate the dimensions of culturally responsive methodology such as cultural and epistemological pluralism, deconstruction of Western colonial traditions of research, and primacy of relationships within culturally responsive dialogic encounters. An overarching question is: “How can we maintain the original integrity of both participants and researchers and their respective cultures and co-construct at the same time something new?”

Design/methodology/approach – Five case study narratives are described in order for readers to understand the range and types of studies …

Transnational Legal Discourse: Reflections On My Time With The German Law Journal, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This paper looks back at the first decade and a half of the German Law Journal, an online law review launched in 2000 and co-founded/co-edited by the author from 2000 until 2013. The refereed Journal, published monthly in English, began with case notes and essays on German, European and International high court decisions, and over time grew into a lively transnational forum for critical legal commentary. With a worldwide readership and authors ranging from law students to Supreme Court Justices, the Journal has long been both a launching pad for emerging scholars‘ writing careers and a vehicle for critical intervention …
