Early Chinese Faience And Glass Beads And Pendants, Simon Kwan Jan 2013

Early Chinese Faience And Glass Beads And Pendants, Simon Kwan

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The earliest Chinese beads and pendants were composed of faience and appeared during the early Western Zhou period, around the 11th Century B.C. True glass began to be made about the time of the Spring and Autumn period (771-467 B.C.). An amazing variety of beautiful "dragonfly-eye beads" appeared in China during the Warring States period (475-221 B.C.), but these were imported and not local products. The complex eye beads were replaced during the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220) by small, plain glass beads generally intended to be strung together. Perforated glass ear spools were also popular during this period and …

Chinese Bead Curtains, Past And Present, Valerie Hector Jan 2013

Chinese Bead Curtains, Past And Present, Valerie Hector

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Relatively little is known about how beads were combined to form larger structures in China. To address this situation, this paper focuses on Chinese bead curtains. Adopting an approach that is broad rather than deep and empirical rather than theoretical, it collates evidence from the textual, material, oral, and pictorial records to consider bead curtains from various perspectives. To begin, this study defines bead curtains as textiles, door and window ornaments, screens, and types of beadwork. It then discusses bead curtains of the imperial era (221 B.C.-A.D. 1911) as they are referenced in the Chinese textual record from the 4th …

Beads From The Hudson's Bay Company's Principal Depot, York Factory, Manitoba, Canada, Karlis Karklins, Gary F. Adams

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

There is no other North American fur trade establishment whose longevity and historical significance can rival that of York Factory. Located in northern Manitoba, Canada, at the base of Hudson Bay, it was the Hudson's Bay Company's principal Bay-side trading post and depot for over 250 years. The existing site of York Factory is the last of a series of three posts, the first of which was erected in 1684. Completed in 1792, York Factory III functioned as the principal depot and administrative center for the great Northern Department until the 1860s when its importance began to wane. It then …

Andean And Tibetan Patterns Of Adaptation To High Altitude, Abigail W. Bigham, Megan J. Wilson, Colleen G. Julian, Melisa Kiyamu, Tom D. Brutsaert Jan 2013

Andean And Tibetan Patterns Of Adaptation To High Altitude, Abigail W. Bigham, Megan J. Wilson, Colleen G. Julian, Melisa Kiyamu, Tom D. Brutsaert

SU Faculty publications on Wellness

Objectives: High-altitude hypoxia, or decreased oxygen levels caused by low barometric pressure, challenges the ability of humans to live and reproduce. Despite these challenges, human populations have lived on the Andean Altiplano and the Tibetan Plateau for millennia and exhibit unique circulatory, respiratory, and hematological adaptations to life at high altitude. We and others have identified natural selection candidate genes and gene regions for these adaptations using dense genome scan data. One gene previously known to be important in cellular oxygen sensing, egl nine homolog 1 (EGLN1), shows evidence of positive selection in both Tibetans and Andeans. Interestingly, the pattern …

Education And Literacy, Carol Summers Jan 2013

Education And Literacy, Carol Summers

History Faculty Publications

Loram's definition of education as planned by the powerful for the social construction of useful and 'good' Africans, along with his implicit concerns about bad or disruptive literate individuals, represented the views of many educationists during the colonial era. Such views, moreover, survived the end of colonial rule, re-emerging at the centre of shifting debates over how educational institutions and pedagogies should either persist or be challenged. Social utility defined education, not its specific content in reading, arithmetic, religious faith, business, or gardening. Struggles over educational planning were less over whether it was a form of social control than over …

Rethinking How Business Purpose Is Taught In Catholic Business Education, Lyman P. Q. Johnson, Michael Naughton, William Bojan Jan 2013

Rethinking How Business Purpose Is Taught In Catholic Business Education, Lyman P. Q. Johnson, Michael Naughton, William Bojan

Scholarly Articles

Business education at a Catholic university should engage students and faculty across the university in critically examining the purpose of business in society. Following the best practices of leading business schools, the Catholic business curriculum has mostly focused on the shareholder and stakeholder approaches - with the shareholder approach being the predominant view. Creatively engaging the Catholic Social Tradition (especially the “community of persons”) can bring a richer appreciation of the purpose of business in our contemporary society than either the shareholder or stakeholder approaches. We argue that far more discretion to pursue various corporate purposes in manifold ways exists …

Latina Political Participation, Anna Sampaio Jan 2013

Latina Political Participation, Anna Sampaio

Ethnic Studies

Contemporary Latinas and Latinos constitute a growing political influence in American politics. Moreover, in 2000 Latinas/Latinos reached a demographic milestone, surpassing African Americans in becoming the largest ethnic minority group in the United States (see Ennis, et al. 2011 and Grieco and Cassidy 2001 under General Overviews). However, despite important political gains made over the past thirty-five years, Latinas and Latinos continue to experience significant structural and resource barriers to their political incorporation, resulting in enduring forms of marginalization for the population. Latinas specifically inherit a long history of political activism dating back to early resistance against US expansion both …

Guinness Go Leor: Irish Pubs And The Diaspora (Chapter From Changes In Contemporary Ireland: Texts And Contexts), Kathleen A. Heininge

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Any study of ethnicity, especially diasporic ethnicity, must somehow engage with the question of "authenticity," and Irish studies is no different. Irish cultural identity is performed on stage (with Irish plays, dance, and music), at St. Patrick's Day celebrations (witness the parade in New Orleans where Irish Spring soap, potatoes, cabbages, and ramen noodles are tossed from floats), in markets (where shamrock boxer shorts, Guinness hats, and Celtic cross snow-globes are sold), and in pubs. Such performances proliferate all over the world, often eliciting debate about the authentic representation of ethnicity. Is Martin McDonagh, touted as some by one of …

Social Media And Collective Intelligence: Ongoing And Future Research Streams, Detlef Schoder, Peter Gloor, P. Takis Metaxas

Faculty Research and Scholarship

The tremendous growth in the use of Social Media has led to radical paradigm shifts in the ways we communicate, collaborate, consume, and create information. Our focus in this special issue is on the reciprocal interplay of Social Media and Collective Intelligence. We therefore discuss constituting attributes of Social Media and Collective Intelligence, and we structure the rapidly growing body of literature including adjacent research streams such as Social Network Analysis, Web Science, and Computational Social Science. We conclude by making propositions for future research where in particular the disciplines of artificial intelligence, computer science, and information systems can substantially …

Is Being Korean Cosmopolitan Possible? Exploring The Self-Identity And Worldview Of Korean International Students At American Colleges, Ji-Su Park Jan 2013

Is Being Korean Cosmopolitan Possible? Exploring The Self-Identity And Worldview Of Korean International Students At American Colleges, Ji-Su Park

Honors Thesis Collection

Of what relevance is national identity to students who spend extended periods of time away from their “home” nation? Is it possible for an individual to be nationalistic and cosmopolitan simultaneously? This study examines Korean international students attending college or university in the U.S. These students grew up in a “one-blood” nation but now find themselves in a far more racially and ethnically diverse nation. My research explores how the U.S. experiences of these students influence their nationalistic versus multicultural/cosmopolitan worldviews. Data come from survey and in-depth one-to-one interviews with Korean international students across the U.S.

From Military Exercises To Visions Of Wilderness: Constructed Environments In Vieques, Puerto Rico, Ada Smith Jan 2013

From Military Exercises To Visions Of Wilderness: Constructed Environments In Vieques, Puerto Rico, Ada Smith

Honors Thesis Collection

I hope to tell the story of the contested landscape of a former military training base in Vieques, a small island municipality of Puerto Rico. Military occupation on the island from 1940 until 2003 led to serious environmental and economic devastation. In 2003, the Navy gave two-thirds of the island to U.S. Fish and Wildlife. In effect, toxic wasteland is now under “conservation” where clean-up is impossible given its status as a wildlife sanctuary. This paradox has been kept out of local dialogue and has provided popular media with a platform to dub Vieques as an untouched gem of the …

Localizing Justice: Beyond The Chambers Of The Icty To The People Of Sanski Most, Kathleen Sprague

Honors Thesis Collection

My research focuses on the efficacy of the International Criminal Tribunal of the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), a judicial mechanism established in The Hague in response to the mass atrocities committed throughout the northern Balkans in the 1990s. Based on my ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Sanski Most, a small town in northwestern Bosnia, I explore residents’ notions of justice following the Yugoslav wars and their overlap as well as disjuncture from Western priorities and initiatives. More broadly, my research hovers at the intersection of legal anthropology and human rights. While it is founded soundly in anthropological methodology and literature, I also …

Conflicting Desires And Unstable Identities: Tensions In The Greek Symposium, Julia Burns Jan 2013

Conflicting Desires And Unstable Identities: Tensions In The Greek Symposium, Julia Burns

Honors Thesis Collection

This thesis focuses on the use of representations of literary symposia by Classical Greek authors. During the late fifth and early fourth centuries, the sympotic setting was inherently linked to the social conditions of that contentious period, at which point the symposium becomes a useful space for the articulation of larger tensions that pervaded the Athenian polis. The literary symposium proved to be a useful mode for presenting conflicting opinions about class, politics, and education—specifically during the early years of the Peloponnesian War. I examine Aristophanes’ Wasps, the Symposium of Xenophon, and Plato’s dialogue of the same name. These …

Development And Assessment Of Traditional And Innovative Media To Reduce Individual Hiv/Aids-Related Stigma Attitudes And Beliefs In India, Caricia Catalani, Diego Castaneda, Freya Spielberg

Prevention and Community Health Faculty Publications

Although stigma is considered a major barrier to effective response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, there is a lack of evidence on effective interventions. This media intervention took place among key HIV-vulnerable communities in Southern India. Two HIV stigma videos were created using techniques from traditional film production and new media digital storytelling. A series of 16 focus group discussions were held in 4 rural and 4 urban sites in South India, with specific groups for sex workers, men who have sex with men, young married women, and others. Focus groups with viewers of the traditional film (8 focus groups, 80 …

The Indian History Of An American Institution: Native Americans And Dartmouth, Colin G. (Colin Gordon) Calloway Jan 2013

The Indian History Of An American Institution: Native Americans And Dartmouth, Colin G. (Colin Gordon) Calloway

Dartmouth College Press

About the Book

(from upne.com) Dartmouth College began life as an Indian school, a pretense that has since been abandoned. Still, the institution has a unique, if complicated, relationship with Native Americans and their history. Beginning with Samson Occom’s role as the first “development officer” of the college, Colin G. Calloway tells the entire, complex story of Dartmouth’s historical and ongoing relationship with Native Americans. Calloway recounts the struggles and achievements of Indian attendees and the history of Dartmouth alumni’s involvements with American Indian affairs. He also covers more recent developments, such as the mascot controversies, the emergence of an …
