Making A Case For Multi-Disciplinary Analysis, Matthew J. Richard, Michael G. Noll, Catherine Oglesby, Mark Patrick George, Tracy Woodard Jan 2013

Making A Case For Multi-Disciplinary Analysis, Matthew J. Richard, Michael G. Noll, Catherine Oglesby, Mark Patrick George, Tracy Woodard

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

In recent years, I have been drawn to inter-disciplinary approaches to scholarship. Specifically, I have been attracted to “mind studies”—an alluring amalgam of Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Developmental Psychology, Psychoanalysis, Social Psychology, and Anthropology—as offering more satisfying explanations of human action. In this paper I want to explore more deeply and expound further upon the benefits of multi-disciplinary research. To do so, I’ve invited colleagues of mine who work in other disciplines to view an ethnographic film about a poor Appalachian family and to identify specific issues in it that they would develop further in their classes. My working assumption is …

The Social Construction Of Frivolity, Rodger A. Bates, Emily B. Fortner Jan 2013

The Social Construction Of Frivolity, Rodger A. Bates, Emily B. Fortner

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Leisure is a continuum of behavior from normative to deviant. Some forms of leisure reflect widely shared cultural norms while others reflect only marginal or sub-cultural acceptance. Within this continuum, we label some harmless forms of non-traditional behavior frivolity. The social construction of frivolity is tempered by time, place, social class and tradition. In addition, frivolity can be a two-edged sword, defining the abnormal as normal or the normal as abnormal.

Anthropologists document the functional nature of frivolity as a safety-valve to the pressures of conformity. Sociologists explore how patterns of interaction are altered or suspended in response to special …

Tree Climbing And Human Evolution, Vivek V. Venkataraman, Thomas S. Kraft, Nathaniel J. Dominy Jan 2013

Tree Climbing And Human Evolution, Vivek V. Venkataraman, Thomas S. Kraft, Nathaniel J. Dominy

Dartmouth Scholarship

Paleoanthropologists have long argued—often contentiously—about the climbing abilities of early hominins and whether a foot adapted to terrestrial bipedalism constrained regular access to trees. However, some modern humans climb tall trees routinely in pursuit of honey, fruit, and game, often without the aid of tools or support systems. Mortality and morbidity associated with facultative arboreality is expected to favor behaviors and anatomies that facilitate safe and efficient climbing. Here we show that Twa hunter–gatherers use extraordinary ankle dorsiflexion (>45°) during climbing, similar to the degree observed in wild chimpanzees. Although we did not detect a skeletal signature of dorsiflexion …

Mixed Methodology Approaches To Exploring Spiritual Transformation, Lewis Mehl-Madrona, Barbara Mainguy, Michael Pickren Valenti Jan 2013

Mixed Methodology Approaches To Exploring Spiritual Transformation, Lewis Mehl-Madrona, Barbara Mainguy, Michael Pickren Valenti

The Qualitative Report

Research suggests that spiritual transformation, a change in the way a person considers the sacred, can change medical outcome (Pargament, 2006) Psychometric studies have failed to identify specific factors, but qualitative reports detail an experience that can be reliably shown to have an impact. We report on the development of a rubric for quantifying levels of spiritual transformation. Narrative analysis techniques were used to quantify levels of spiritual transformation from participants’ life stories, experience with traditional healers, and subsequent medical status. A quantification rubric was developed and 111 assistants rated the stories after a three - hour training session. Inter …

Indicators Of Family Care For Development For Use In Multicountry Surveys, Patricia Kariger, Edward A. Frongillo Jr., Patrice Engle, Pia M. Rebello Britto, Sara M. Sywulka, Purnima Menon

Faculty Publications

Indicators of family care for development are essential for ascertaining whether families are providing their children with an environment that leads to positive developmental outcomes. This project aimed to develop indicators from a set of items, measuring family care practices and resources important for caregiving, for use in epidemiologic surveys in developing countries. A mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) design was used for item selection and evaluation. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted to examine the validity of candidate items in several country samples. Qualitative methods included the use of global expert panels to identify and evaluate the performance of …

Taiwanese Language Medical School Curriculum: A Case Study Of Symbolic Resistance Through The Promotion Of Alternative Literacy And Language Domain Norms, Philip John Sweeney Jan 2013

Taiwanese Language Medical School Curriculum: A Case Study Of Symbolic Resistance Through The Promotion Of Alternative Literacy And Language Domain Norms, Philip John Sweeney

Dissertations and Theses

In contemporary Taiwan, Mandarin language proficiency and literacy in Han characters are not only key skills needed for success in academic institutions and employment markets, but they also carry meaning as symbolic markers of national and supranational Chinese identity. This study examines how Taiwanese-language medical studies curriculum planners are promoting alternative linguistic practices as a means of resisting the influence of Chinese nationalism in Taiwan and striving to replace it with a rival Taiwanese nationalism. I conducted research for this study during the 2010-2011 school year in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. I collected data for this study by engaging in participant observation …

K’U’X Como Vínculo Corporal En El Cosmos, Servando Z. Hinojosa Jan 2013

K’U’X Como Vínculo Corporal En El Cosmos, Servando Z. Hinojosa

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Today, for the kaqchikel maya of the Guatemalan Highlands, the word k'u'x has gained great importance. Generally translated as "corazon" k'u'x has a strong sense or viral force. In the community under study, k'u'x has its expression in three significant ways: focusing on life and sensibility, as a placenta and as the creator-sustaining deity. Among its multiple aspects it shows a spiritual character interlacing with the physical dimensions of human life. The purpose of this paper is to approach co an integral understanding of k'u'x, taking in regard its position in several domains of Mayan experience. I present the fundamental …

Faithful Presence And Theological Jurisprudence: A Response To James Davison Hunter , Zachary R. Calo Jan 2013

Faithful Presence And Theological Jurisprudence: A Response To James Davison Hunter , Zachary R. Calo

Pepperdine Law Review

This paper considers how James Hunter’s arguments, presented both in his address and his book To Change the World, might inform the development of a constructive religious legal theory based in the particular resources of Christian theology. In speaking of religious legal theory, I mean something quite different than a theory of law and religion. For some time, the academic conversation about law and religion has centered around issues concerning church-state relations and, more broadly, the place of religion within the liberal political order. Yet, the regnant methodological concerns that have shaped this discourse reflect the boundedness of law to …

The Paternalistic Relationship: Authenticity And Credibility As A Source Of Healthy Relationships, Dodi W. Irawanto, Phil L. Ramsey, David M. Tweed

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This article explores the how the Paternalistic Leadership model can be viewed as part of a relationship-based paradigm of leadership, and can incorporate concepts such as credibility and authenticity. The review highlights the need to understand paternalistic leadership as an approach to establishing productive relationships within a cultural context, with implications for researchers and practitioners in both collectivist and individualistic cultures.
