Moving Beyond Brands: Integrating Approaches To Mediation, Brian Jarrett Feb 2013

Moving Beyond Brands: Integrating Approaches To Mediation, Brian Jarrett

UAAJC Occasional Papers

Mediation has become a competition among brands vying for distinction based more on market concerns than genuine difference. This is not a positive development for a professional field of endeavor. Mediation has much more to offer than competing claims of superiority that attempt to deride and disparage the competition. This article, which is written from a sociological viewpoint, challenges these claims and suggests that the mediation community should develop instead a broader integrated approach to mediation that is pragmatic, flexible, open-source, and based on a robust theoretical foundation.

Building Bridges And Solving Crimes? A Critical Examination Of How Police Use The New Aged Technology Of Social Media - Specifically Facebook, Seyed Raza Mirmajlessi

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The social media conglomerate Facebook has dramatically grown over the past few years. As a result, many law enforcement officials -- specifically police -- have taken notice. Recently, this has translated into police departments nationwide adopting Facebook in their daily efforts to improve police performance. Extensive reports from news media outlets have documented the assortment of uses Facebook provides police personnel. It has been reported that police are not only using the tool to prevent crime, but also as an innovative way to engage and interact with the community. In an era of community policing, it is vital to explore …

Private Agri-Food Standards: Contestation, Hybridity And The Politics Of Standards, Carmen Bain, Elizabeth Ransom, Vaughan Higgins Feb 2013

Private Agri-Food Standards: Contestation, Hybridity And The Politics Of Standards, Carmen Bain, Elizabeth Ransom, Vaughan Higgins

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Standards are an omnipresent yet generally taken-for-granted part of our everyday life (Higgins and Larner, 2010a; Timmermans and Epstein, 2010; Busch, 2011). Until recently, standards within the agri-food sector were typically dismissed (if thought of at all) by social scientists as rather benign, technical tools, primarily of interest to specialists concerned with facilitating markets and trade. Over the past decade, however, this assessment has changed considerably and many agri-food scholars now view standards as a useful entry point for analysing and understanding our social and material world. The degree of interest today is reflected in the fact that our call …

Meaningful Space In A Digital Age, Ben Malczewski Feb 2013

Meaningful Space In A Digital Age, Ben Malczewski

Online Northwest

Extracting from the ALA book The Library 2025, the author considers our relationship with our physical surroundings and objects from a multidisciplinary perspective (behavioral/neurological) and reflects on their roles in creating experience and memory, as well as inward/outward concepts of identity, self, and community. We’ll then graduate the idea to address how the library's notion of content (from analog to digital) will undergo a further evolution to "dynamic," and introduce how concepts such as "dialectal design" and the "occasioning of space" will play vital roles in capturing and projecting the essence of the Library.

Mobile Stats Are Not Enough: What Do Mobile Library Site Users Actually Do?, Hannah Gascho Rempel, Laurie Bridges

Online Northwest

Good mobile websites are designed around an understanding of the context of what the user is expected to do. But what exactly are our users doing on our mobile library sites? User stats only provide part of the story, so Oregon State University librarians set out to solve this mystery by actually asking users what they do on our mobile site. The answers to this question are the first step in a usability study and will help us make smarter design decisions, decide what services to feature, and figure out what new tools might enhance our users’ mobile library experience. …

Teacher Design Using Online Learning Resources: A Comparative Case Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers, Mimi Recker Feb 2013

Teacher Design Using Online Learning Resources: A Comparative Case Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers, Mimi Recker

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Using a comparative case study design, this paper explores the impacts of a technology-related professional development (TTPD) design aimed at helping science and mathematics teachers design classroom activities using the wealth of resources available on the Internet. Using the lens of curricular adaption and the notion of teachers’ varying pedagogical design capacity, we analyzed the experiences of four teachers in terms of the kinds of instructional activities teachers designed, how these were supported with online resources, and teachers’ perceptions of impacts on student learning. Findings suggested that participants used a variety of personally relevant design strategies when applying TTPD concepts …

Urban Forest Justice And The Rights To Wild Foods, Medicines, And Materials In The City, Melissa R. Poe, Rebecca J. Mclain, Marla R. Emery, Patrick T. Hurley Feb 2013

Urban Forest Justice And The Rights To Wild Foods, Medicines, And Materials In The City, Melissa R. Poe, Rebecca J. Mclain, Marla R. Emery, Patrick T. Hurley

Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

Urban forests are multifunctional socio-ecological landscapes, yet some of their social benefits remain poorly understood. This paper draws on ethnographic evidence from Seattle, Washington to demonstrate that urban forests contain nontimber forest products that contribute a variety of wild foods, medicines, and materials for the well-being of urban residents. We show that gathering wild plants and fungi in urban forests is a persistent subsistence and livelihood practice that provides sociocultural and material benefits to city residents, and creates opportunities for connecting with nature and enhancing social ties. We suggest that an orientation toward human-nature interactions in cities that conceptualizes the …

Artistic Representations Of The Sea And Coast: Implications For Sustainability, Laura Stocker, Deborah Kennedy Feb 2013

Artistic Representations Of The Sea And Coast: Implications For Sustainability, Laura Stocker, Deborah Kennedy

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

This article explores artistic representations of Australian seas and coasts, and the power of art to sustain seas and coasts. Research into artworks at the National Gallery of Australia was supplemented with a study of other local public and private works. A number of substantive themes emerged in viewing the paintings; the sea and coast has been represented as: sea country, sovereign territory, sublime spaces, a Romantic space of yearning, a psychological journey, a literal journey, a site of social and political comment, social places, ecological places and a site for industry. We discuss these themes, reflecting on the various …

Screening The Beach – Probing The Past: The Baltic Sea In Contemporary German Cinema, Alexandra Ludewig Feb 2013

Screening The Beach – Probing The Past: The Baltic Sea In Contemporary German Cinema, Alexandra Ludewig

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

Since the fall of the Wall, unification and the subsequent re-invention of the nation, filmmakers have revisited the German Heimat film / homeland film cinematic tradition with a view to placing themselves creatively in the context of its intellectual and artistic heritage. However, German directors like Ute Badura, Wolfgang Koepp, Andreas Dresen, Peter Welz and Andreas Kleinert, who, in their work and autobiographies, bring East and West together, choose an Eastern setting for their films – rather than alpine or heath-landscapes – as they ascribe symbolic value to the Baltic Region and former German territories in the East. In many …

Rocks In Their Heads: The Landscape And You Experience, George Karpathakis Feb 2013

Rocks In Their Heads: The Landscape And You Experience, George Karpathakis

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

Humanity has had a long relationship with rocks including collecting them. This article argues that humans collect and use rocks for many for many purposes: utilitarian, economic, scientific, sacred, decorative and mnemonic. The collected rock acquires meaning different from the rock in situ. This meaning can be communal or personal, connected to events, real or mythic, or to place. The rock can act as a sign or tell a story. It can be seen as a metonym of the landscape. Or it can be viewed as a synecdoche, the part standing in for the whole, for a landscape or an …
