Addressing The Elephant In The Room: Understanding The Daily Life Of Undocumented Latino High School Youth, Sylvia E. Rusin Apr 2013

Addressing The Elephant In The Room: Understanding The Daily Life Of Undocumented Latino High School Youth, Sylvia E. Rusin

Honors Projects

The 1.5 generation are the undocumented students who were born abroad and were brought to the United States by their parents at an early age. Many of these children came here during the population boom in the 1990’s and are now teenagers or in their mid 20’s. As they are finishing high school, nearly all of them are confused about their post-secondary options because of their undocumented status. The IL Dream Act, passed in 2011, qualifies undocumented youth to pay in-state tuition when attending public universities in Illinois and provides trained counselors who are aware of the college options and …

A Case Study Of Religious Engagement Online: How Malaysian Muslim Students Access Islamic Information, Mohd Mahadi

Theses

The spread of digital technology has expanded how people engage with religious information. Religious activities are no longer restricted to physical spaces as the Internet allows users to customize their religious experiences. This study, grounded in the uses and gratifications theory, explores how Malaysian Muslim students access religious information across two mediums: print and electronic media; as well as investigating the relationship between the preferred medium for accessing information and religious engagement. Malaysian Muslim students studying in Malaysia and the United States were recruited online for preliminary and in-depth interviews. The results show that access to the Internet, availability of …

Catherine Opie's Domestic Series, Sara Harney Apr 2013

Catherine Opie's Domestic Series, Sara Harney

Theses and Dissertations

American photographer Catherine Opie combines portraiture and documentary photography in her photographic series titled Domestic. At the center of this series lies the idea of community and the question of how community is constructed, a theme which unites Opie’s seemingly disparate bodies of work. Domestic depicts lesbians from across the United States in scenes of domesticity, living as couples, families, and housemates. Using formal portrait conventions to aestheticize the images, Opie photographed her subjects in and around their actual homes to create images that are documentary in essence. The series works to represent the lesbian community, which Opie felt had …

Publications and Research

The emergence of lithic technology by ∼2.6 million years ago (Ma) is often interpreted as a correlate of increasingly recurrent hominin acquisition and consumption of animal remains. Associated faunal evidence, however, is poorly preserved prior to ∼1.8 Ma, limiting our understanding of early archaeological (Oldowan) hominin carnivory. Here, we detail three large well-preserved zooarchaeological assemblages from Kanjera South, Kenya. The assemblages date to ∼2.0 Ma, pre-dating all previously published archaeofaunas of appreciable size. At Kanjera, there is clear evidence that Oldowan hominins acquired and processed numerous, relatively complete, small ungulate carcasses. Moreover, they had at least occasional access to the …

Native American Projectile Points: What Stories Can They Tell Us?, Katelyn S. Scott Apr 2013

Native American Projectile Points: What Stories Can They Tell Us?, Katelyn S. Scott

Honors Projects

Native American Projectile Points are ubiquitous throughout the United States and have been an important icon of indigenous peoples of North America and their past. This paper explores what projectile points can tell us about the people who made and used them, the history of collecting projectile points, and the challenges associated with projectile point research and collection management. The focus of this research is a collection of Native American projectile points in the Tate Archives and Special Collections in The Ames Library at Illinois Wesleyan University. In addition, the paper also describes the process used to catalog the collection, …

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

MEET ME IN THE ISLANDS: SUN, SAND AND TRANSACTIONAL SEX IN CARIBBEAN DISCOURSE

The Caribbean has been figured in literary, state, touristic and advertising discourses as a dream space getaway, in which one can shed inhibitions and social accretions for a therapeutic dose of sun and sand and transactional sex which promises to heal, restore and put the alienated back in touch with the senses. This paper reads a range of fictional, state and advertising discourses to analyse the complex and paradoxical manner in which first and third world development and power relations play themselves out on the most intimate …

In The Land Of Beer, Brats, And Bootlegging: A Personal Account Of Milwaukee History, Marissa Schmidt Apr 2013

In The Land Of Beer, Brats, And Bootlegging: A Personal Account Of Milwaukee History, Marissa Schmidt

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

In all of the United States, one may be challenged to find a city that even today has remained quite as German as Milwaukee. Why is this? Within the boundaries of this paper, I have sought to answer this question by exploring one specific branch of my family tree, the Froehlichs. Their experiences in coming to Milwaukee from Germany and raising many generations there, directly mirror the stories of thousands of other German immigrants at the time. Together, these immigrants built a very tight-knit and unique American community that successfully blended some of the best elements of German culture and …

The Biomechanics Of Spear Throwing: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Anatomical Variation On Throwing Performance, With Implications For The Fossil Record, Julia Marie Maki Apr 2013

The Biomechanics Of Spear Throwing: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Anatomical Variation On Throwing Performance, With Implications For The Fossil Record, Julia Marie Maki

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Accurate, high velocity throwing is a skill unique to humans among living species. It likely provided an adaptive advantage for our hominin ancestors, either in the context of hunting, or protection from predators. Thus, understanding how variation in body form and anatomy influences throwing ability may provide insight into the evolution of human morphology. Research has been done on various forms of ball and javelin throwing, yet the biomechanics of spear throwing were completely unknown. Moreover, it has been suggested that early modern humans had lesser effective mechanical advantage: EMA, the ratio of moment arm to load arm) than Neandertals, …

Growing Up Tamarin: Morphology, Reproduction, And Population Demography Of Sympatric Free-Ranging Saguinus Fuscicollis And S. Imperator, Mrinalini Watsa

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The Callitrichidae are family of small New World primates with a suite of distinctive morphological and behavioral adaptations that set them apart from other primates. Of primary interest is their reproductive system that includes compulsive twinning: ≥80% of births) and cooperative care of offspring by individuals other than biological parents: termed alloparenting). Further, hematopoietic tissues in callitrichids display signals of both self and sibling DNA, due to an exchange of stem cells early in gestation that renders twin callitrichids as cellular mosaics of each other. This phenomenon is known as genetic chimerism, which increases genetic relatedness between individuals and is …

Notions Of Spirits As Agents Of Mental Illness Among The Akan Of Ghana: A Cultural-Psychological Exploration, Annabella Opare-Henaku Apr 2013

Notions Of Spirits As Agents Of Mental Illness Among The Akan Of Ghana: A Cultural-Psychological Exploration, Annabella Opare-Henaku

Theses and Dissertations

The study explores lay conceptualizations of mental illness among the Akans of Ghana as influenced by their cultural worldview. Akan, the largest ethnic group in Ghana, is noted for the use of supernatural attributions for various health-related issues. The supernatural attributions are based on Akan ontological belief that the universe is unitary such that there is no clear distinction between physical and spiritual occurrences. This worldview guides Akans in how they deal with a wide range of issues including their mental health. Clinicians and other mental health professionals who rely solely on biomedical approaches to mental health fail to meet …

Visual Communication On Cajamarca Ceramics From Pre-Hispanic Peru, 1000 - 1460 Ce, Jeanette Nicewinter

Theses and Dissertations

This project analyzes a database of 118 ceramic sherds that were excavated from the Late Intermediate Period site of Yanaorco, located in the Cajamarca region of the north highlands in present-day Peru, for vessel form, style, and imagery. Through the placement of these sherds within the context of inter-community feasting events that took place at Yanaorco, fineware ceramic vessels are interpreted as prestige items that were utilized by the elite to further differentiate themselves from other community citizens. By examining key examples of representational and non-representational imagery depicted on the sherds, an understanding of the social agency of the vessel …
