A Novel Algorithm For Creating Useful Hip Joint Center Location Estimates From Gait Motion, James Soutelle
A Novel Algorithm For Creating Useful Hip Joint Center Location Estimates From Gait Motion, James Soutelle
Open Access Theses
This document contains the results of an experiment conducted in the Biomechanics Research Laboratory at the University of Miami. A novel two sided hip joint center location algorithm was created and tested. The Vicon motion capture system located in the Biomechanics lab assisted in the testing of the algorithm. Both hip joint centers were successfully located during multiple gait trials. The hip location results were compared to the conventional predictive hip joint center techniques. A validation trial was also conducted. More validation testing is need to confirm the applicability of this hip joint center location technique.

“This I Say Not As One Doubting”: Traditions Of The Apostle Thomas From The Beginning Of The Common Era Through 800 Ce, Janna Y. Strain
“This I Say Not As One Doubting”: Traditions Of The Apostle Thomas From The Beginning Of The Common Era Through 800 Ce, Janna Y. Strain
Honors Projects
Historically, Thomas has a rich identity. Much of the apocrypha was named for the "doubting" disciple, such as The Gospel of Thomas, The Book of Thomas the Contender, and The Acts of the Apostle Thomas, yet these traditions do not address Thomas's story from The Gospel of John. In fact, Thomas becomes the favored disciple in The Book of Thomas the Contender and logion 13 of The Gospel of Thomas. In The Acts of the Apostle Thomas the disciple leaves Rome to evangelize in India where he is eventually martyred. Today, he is still revered in South India …

Empowerment And Health In A Low Income Community In Mumbai, India, Lwendo Moonzwe
Empowerment And Health In A Low Income Community In Mumbai, India, Lwendo Moonzwe
Master's Theses
The data on which this thesis is based were collected in three study communities located in a marginalized area of Mumbai. We draw on two data sources: in-depth qualitative interviews conducted with 66 married women and a survey sample of 260 married women. This thesis examines the relationship between empowerment to women’s self-reported general health status and women’s self-reported health during pregnancy in low-income communities in Mumbai. The results of the analysis show that empowerment functions differently in relation to women’s general health situation and their pregnancy status. Findings indicate that women who are more empowered are more likely to …

A Focus Group Study Of The Academic Success And Satisfaction Among Undergraduates With Undecided Majors, Tiffany Alexander
A Focus Group Study Of The Academic Success And Satisfaction Among Undergraduates With Undecided Majors, Tiffany Alexander
Honors Projects
This project interviewed 4 initially undecided major students who now have declared majors in a focus group setting to determine their feelings of satisfaction and success. The study has three major findings. First, students felt their initial undecided status allowed more flexible course selection and resulted in a more well-rounded education. Second, while students liked this greater flexibility, students felt after declaring a major, they constantly played “catch up†to graduate on time and to receive career internships. Lastly, students liked their pre-major advisors, but wanted advisors to give them more time, career direction and advice, and to have a …
Math And Chemistry Connections, Angela Goodhart
Math And Chemistry Connections, Angela Goodhart
Honors Projects
The connection between mathematics skills and chemistry course success was examined by analyzing data from Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) software initial assessment for CHEM 1250, General Chemistry I, and final course grades from fall of 2009 and 2011. These years were chosen to evaluate the effect of a mathematics prerequisite of MATH 1220, College Algebra II. In 2011, after the prerequisite was in place, students had mastered significantly more of the mathematics topics on the initial ALEKS assessment, but there was not a significant change in final course grade.

Botanical Resource Use In The Bronze And Iron Age Of The Central Eurasian Mountain/Steppe Interface: Decision Making In Multiresource Pastoral Economies, Robert Nicholas Spengler
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This dissertation examines botanical resources as components of Central Asian economies in the Bronze: ca. 2500 - 800 B.C.) and Iron Ages: ca. 800 B.C. - A.D. 500) using a paleoethnobotanical data set from four archaeological sites, Begash, Mukri, Tasbas, and Tuzusai. These sites are located in the Semirech'ye region of eastern Kazakhstan, and they occupy distinctive microenvironmental zones along the mountain and steppe boundaries; furthermore, they show a great deal of material cultural similarity and are placed into the same culture groups by researchers. The introduction of macrobotanical studies to Central Asian archaeology allows for a critique of former …

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Western lowland gorillas: Gorilla g. gorilla) consume large quantities of fruit and disperse a great number of seeds. The majority these seeds are dispersed intact and viable in the dung. Dung is often deposited around the rim of a night nest or at a nest-site. Gorillas often construct nests in areas that have a sparse canopy, flattening the ground vegetation. These locations can be beneficial to the growth and survival of the seed species they disperse. Thus, not only are gorillas effective in terms of depositing seeds great distances from parent plants, away from the highest seed rain densities, they …

Determination Of Biomechanical Differences Between Elite And Novice San Shou Female Athletes, Chuanyin Jiang, Michael W. Olson, Li Li
Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications
Determining the key factors in athletic performance is important for developing the technique and strength of athletes. Many martial arts forms have been studied, but a relatively new form of martial arts competition, San Shou, has not been analyzed. The purpose of this study was to determine key attributes necessary in the development of the San Shou athlete, particularly in female participants. Six elite and six novice competitors performed 30 continuous repetitions of cyclic extension and flexion of the trunk segment, knee joints, and elbows joints at two velocities, 60°/second and 180°/second, using an isokinetic dynamometer. Variables of interest were …

Abstract:
Professional literature in health care ethics today frequently reports discussions on the multiple variables that threaten the human dignity and vulnerability of the sick person. Unfortunately, little attention is given to understanding how human dignity of the clinician is threatened and violated in the current health care environment.
Today’s technologically and economically-driven health care environment is influenced by moral relativism, reductionism, and a clinical focus on specialization, technology …

Moving Targets: Meanings Of Mobility In Metropolitan Nairobi, Meghan Elizabeth Ference
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This dissertation is an ethnographic and historical study of the urban transportation system in Nairobi, Kenya and the large youth workforce who operate it. Currently, the informal mini-bus taxi system made up of vehicles called matatus, carries nearly 80% of the urban population in Nairobi on a daily basis. It is, by far, the most popular form of transportation in the country and employs the largest number of young people, as well. This type of transportation is not unique to African countries as mini-bus: 14-32 passengers) and midi-bus: 32-48 passengers) taxis are common in Turkey, Jamaica, Philippines, Russia and Chile …

Consuming Places: A Bioregional Comparison Of Voluntary Simplicity Lifestyles, Lauren Drakopulos
Consuming Places: A Bioregional Comparison Of Voluntary Simplicity Lifestyles, Lauren Drakopulos
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
Many have argued that in the developed world, consumption has reached unsustainable levels, precipitating social, economic, and environmental decline. Voluntary simplicity is an anti-consumption lifestyle in which practitioners are seeking out an authentic connection to the external world with fulfillment garnered from relationships rather than through the accumulation of material goods. Under the framework of political ecology, this research examined how bioregional characteristics impacted the way in which simplifiers think about and practice simplicity. Using focus groups, in-depth interviews and participant observation, the author did a bioregional comparison of voluntary simplifiers living in the Greater Everglades Bioregion and the Sonoran …

Filling A House With Meaning: The Construction Of A Chicago Housing Cooperative, Laura Hones
Filling A House With Meaning: The Construction Of A Chicago Housing Cooperative, Laura Hones
Honors Projects
A housing cooperative is a non-profit form of housing tenure that has been a feature of American university campuses since the 1930s. Living in a co-op allows members the benefits of low rent, a close-knit social group, and democratic control of their living space. Unlike communes, however, members do not typically share income or unite around a particular ideology. This paper is the result of ethnographic research of one such house, Haymarket House of Qumbya Housing Cooperative in Hyde Park, Chicago. In 1988 the founders of Haymarket established its methods of structuring everyday life on principles of socialism, egalitarianism, and …
