Navigating The Field : An Examination Of Rhetorical Spaces In The Journal Of Sex Research., Deanna Mcgaughey-Summers Dec 2013

Navigating The Field : An Examination Of Rhetorical Spaces In The Journal Of Sex Research., Deanna Mcgaughey-Summers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I adopt a praxical theory of rhetorical space to identify and examine how members of The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality draw on or invoke rhetorical spatiality in their research published in the Journal of Sex Research. My specific research questions were: (1) What types of rhetorical spaces do sexologists create? and, (2) What rhetorical strategies do sexologists use to create rhetorical spaces? The dissertation is divided into five chapters that present different investigations of the production of rhetorical space in The Journal of Sex Research. Chapter One introduces the theoretical and methodological foundation for …

Site 15sp202 And The Mississippian Presence At The Falls Of The Ohio River., William Travis Fisher 1983- Dec 2013

Site 15sp202 And The Mississippian Presence At The Falls Of The Ohio River., William Travis Fisher 1983-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The following paper is an analysis of the decorated ceramics associated with site 15SP202, a Mississippi Period site in Spencer County, Kentucky. The ceramics were then used to determine whether the site had been classified correctly by its original investigator, due to the ambiguity often associated with assigning temporal and cultural affiliation to late prehistoric sites in the Falls of the Ohio River region. After the initial analysis, the author compared and contrasted 15SP202 with other known and more fully excavated Mississippian sites in the region, in an attempt to integrate the site in question into a wider regional context. …

Cultural Interpretations Of Socratic And Confucian Education Philosophy., Wang Heng Dec 2013

Cultural Interpretations Of Socratic And Confucian Education Philosophy., Wang Heng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Socrates and Confucius constitute roots of western and eastern civilization respectively, as well as represent very different cultural values and educational traditions. Because of the very limited existing literature on the study of their educational philosophies, this paper is devoted to a comparative study of their educational philosophies, attempting to examine their historical and cultural contexts and unravel their implications on the current educational practices. The method employed in the study is hermeneutics, or interpretation of the literary texts. At the same time, the study is also cross-cultural in nature. Both of the philosophers lived around 4-5th century B.C.E., but …

Discovering Domestic Cemeteries : History, Preservation, And Education., Savannah Leigh Darr 1985- Dec 2013

Discovering Domestic Cemeteries : History, Preservation, And Education., Savannah Leigh Darr 1985-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historic cemeteries and graveyards hold the history of the people and community in which they were built. The inscriptions, iconography, and epitaphs on gravemarkers provide insight into the family, religion, social status, and culture of those interred within a specific cemetery or graveyard. They are primary resources for historical research, as some of the information on a gravemarker may not be found anywhere else. Few scholars have recognized the value of small domestic graveyards, which typically have fewer interments and tend to be more isolated in location. For these reasons, domestic graveyards are the most fragile and their preservation is …

Reproduction, Sexual Swellings And Mating Behavior In Sanje Mangabeys (Cercocebus Sanjei), David Fernandez Sobrado Dec 2013

Reproduction, Sexual Swellings And Mating Behavior In Sanje Mangabeys (Cercocebus Sanjei), David Fernandez Sobrado

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Inter-sexual conflict, or the opposing reproductive strategies of males and females, has become a primary structural factor in current models of social organization as it drives an evolutionary arms-race between the sexes. In many primates living in polygynandrous groups, the mating strategy of dominant males is to guard fertile females, while females develop sexual swellings that provide males with information regarding the approximate, but not exact, timing of ovulation. This allows females to mate promiscuously, confusing paternity, while concentrating paternity on males with the best competitive ability, i.e. | those that are able to mate guard during the peak swelling …

Muchos Mentores En Iowa: The Pedagogy Of Student To Student Mentoring In Information Literacy, Julia Bauder, Beth Bohstedt, Phillip Jones

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

At Grinnell College we believe that students can be the best teachers and that lasting learning also happens outside of the classroom. The Grinnell College Libraries' peer mentoring program is rooted in these beliefs. Our program has two components: advanced research help provided by reference assistants (RAs) at the reference desk; and basic information service provided by all students working at our public service desks. Throughout this presentation, attendees will be challenged to consider if peer information service is appropriate for their libraries and to articulate initial steps to explore and implement such a service.

STEM fields in the US continue to be dominated by people whose cultural backgrounds are White, English-speaking, and middle class (National Academy of Engineering and National Research Council, 2009). Many reasons have been offered to explain this phenomenon: Students’ backgrounds may include worldviews, beliefs, and communicative practices that do not cohere with those practiced in STEM classrooms (Aikenhead & Jegede, 1999; Lee, 1999); instructional materials may present STEM fields as a-cultural, decontextualized practices with no evident connection to students’ lives and communities, such as the routine completion of numerical exercises (O’Halloran, 2005); students’ identities—shaped in part by their desired life …

Tsehootsooidi Baa Hane: Emergent Oral Histories From A Navajo Community Based Oral History Project In Ft. Defiance, Az, Gwendolyn W. Saul

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation research is based on a community oral history project about Tséhootsooi or Fort Defiance, Arizona, a predominantly Navajo community. Colonial historical narratives of Fort Defiance selectively focus on the non-Navajo institutions that developed within the community: hospital, boarding school, and trading posts; in response, local residents oral histories challenge settler colonial narratives and speak to the events and places that make this community significant to Navajo history. Through the theoretical lens of decolonization and critical indigenous theory, my research addresses Navajo historical representation, the production of settler colonial narratives and community residents' efforts to assert sovereignty through Navajo …

Nanta Hosh Chahta Immi? (What Are Choctaw Lifeways?): Cultural Preservation In The Casino Era, Sean Everette Gantt

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation investigates the long-term impacts of tribal economic development programs on the cultural preservation efforts of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (MBCI). Since the 1970s the Mississippi Choctaw have initiated many different economic enterprises ranging from manufacturing plants to resort development, owning and operating a diversified portfolio of manufacturing, service, retail, and tourism enterprises. This history of engaging with western business models offers a unique perspective for analyzing the long-term effects of these practices on a tribal community. My work with the MBCI engages a long debate over the use of capitalist business models in tribal economic development …

Revisiting The Seven Lineages Of The Book Of Mormon And The Seven Tribes Of Mesoamerica, Diane E. Wirth Dec 2013

Revisiting The Seven Lineages Of The Book Of Mormon And The Seven Tribes Of Mesoamerica, Diane E. Wirth

BYU Studies

The number seven was significant to the pre-Columbian communities of Mesoamerica, as it was in the Book of Mormon. A pan-Mesoamerica legend tells of a core people descended from seven tribes, which may coincide with the seven lineages mentioned three times in the Book of Mormon. While no verifiable evidence ties these two accounts together, a closer look at the Mesoamerican legend is warranted. This article examines numerous depictions of the seven tribes in Mesoamerican art contained in their lienzos (pieces of fabric with historical drawings or maps), illustrated books called codices, and post-Conquest documents that were shown to and …

Physiological, Histological, And Mechanical Characteristics Of Selected Epaxial Muscles In Primates, Md Emranul Huq Dec 2013

Physiological, Histological, And Mechanical Characteristics Of Selected Epaxial Muscles In Primates, Md Emranul Huq

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The spine is the central element of the locomotor skeleton, acting as a link between the head and limbs. However, despite well-documented differences in spinal morphology among primates, we have comparatively little quantitative documentation on the structural characteristics of muscles that move the spine. The primary goals of this investigation were: (i) to identify and characterize morphological and related physiological, histological, and mechanical aspects of selected epaxial muscles in two groups of related but behaviorally distinct primates; and (ii) to investigate if these features could be interpreted in terms of the degree of spinal mobility during locomotion. To these ends, …

A Basic Qualitative Study Investigating How Middle School Art Teachers In Urban And Suburban Settings Employ Aspects Of Multiculturalism, Teresa J. Burgio Dec 2013

A Basic Qualitative Study Investigating How Middle School Art Teachers In Urban And Suburban Settings Employ Aspects Of Multiculturalism, Teresa J. Burgio

Art Education Projects

Abstract

I began this qualitative study on multicultural education in the classroom because I wanted to find out how art teachers implement multiculturalism and also how students react. I also wanted to learn what resources are used and strategies for this type of teaching. I chose an urban middle school with a sixth grade art class and a suburban middle school with a seventh grade art class. I taught as a substitute at these schools and these teachers informed me they teach multiculturalism in the art room. Both teachers are experienced and have been teaching art for over 15 years. …

The Samaritans are a group of some 750 indigenous Middle Eastern people, about half of whom live in Holon, a suburb of Tel Aviv, and the other half near Nablus. The Samaritan population is believed to have numbered more than a million in late Roman times, but less than 150 in 1917. The ancestry of the Samaritans has been subject to controversy from late Biblical times to the present. In this study, liquid chromatographyelectrospray ionization quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry was used to allelotype 13 Y-chromosomal and 15 autosomal microsatellites in a sample of 12 Samaritans chosen to have as …

Deutsche Touristen Und Ihre Suche Nach Authentizität, Charlotte Kubicz Dec 2013

Deutsche Touristen Und Ihre Suche Nach Authentizität, Charlotte Kubicz

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

This essay is a study that combines the disciplines of film studies and cultural studies to analyze two contemporary German films “Erleuchtung Garantiert” (2000) and “Kirschblüten” (2008) by the filmmaker Dorris Dörrie. They both depict the pilgrimage of German tourists to Japan in the effort to restore a sense of authenticity to their lives. The study concentrates on the depiction of the encounter between Eastern and Western culture in connection with the theory of “Orientalism” by Edward Saïd. The analysis focuses on the confrontation of the illusory Japanese authenticity, as imagined by the German tourists, and the “real” Japanese authenticity …

Napoleon's Siege Of Acre: A Reevaluation Of The Historical And Archaeological Record, Morgan L. Breene Dec 2013

Napoleon's Siege Of Acre: A Reevaluation Of The Historical And Archaeological Record, Morgan L. Breene

Senior Honors Projects

The modern port of Akko, Israel, has been essential to movement and trade in the eastern Mediterranean since the Hellenistic period, and used as a harbor since the Neolithic. Its many incarnations and occupations over the centuries are documented by the cultural material laying on and under the bed of the harbor, and it is an area of great fascination for historians and underwater archaeologists. One particular pivotal event in the modern history of the port, however, continues to beguile researchers.

Napoleon's failed siege of Acre (modern-day Akko), Israel in the spring of 1799 was a turning point in his …

Creating Spaces For Critical Transformative Dialogues: Legitimising Discussion Groups As Professional Practice, Christine J. Edwards-Groves Dec 2013

Creating Spaces For Critical Transformative Dialogues: Legitimising Discussion Groups As Professional Practice, Christine J. Edwards-Groves

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Focussed dialogue (as lived and living practices) can have a powerful role in renewing professional practice, advancing its sustainability and development as administrative and political systems colonise the practices of teachers and teacher educators. However, participating in discussion groups for many teachers, including those in academia, is often constrained by time demands, workplace structures and accountabilities. This paper reports a two year empirical case study investigating the transformative nature of dialogues experienced in one such focused discussion group. The dialogic practices of the group aimed firstly to provide a communicative space for its participants to interrogate and interpret factors …
