Decolonizing Vocational Education In Togo: Postcolonial, Deweyan, And Feminist Considerations, Tairou Goura, Deborah L. Seltzer-Kelly
Decolonizing Vocational Education In Togo: Postcolonial, Deweyan, And Feminist Considerations, Tairou Goura, Deborah L. Seltzer-Kelly
Education and Culture
The Republic of Togo, like many African former colonies, has struggled to create a system of vocational education that will aid its efforts to move beyond the status of a satellite to Western economies. We incorporate postcolonial, Deweyan and feminist perspectives to understand how lingering colonialism and neo-colonial forces have hampered reform efforts in one postsecondary vocational program, and have posed a special challenge to the women who comprise the majority of its students. We argue that deeper attention to Deweyan principles for critical thought, in conjunction with consideration for local settings, is vital to meaningful and democratizing reform.

The Secret Between Storytelling And Retelling: Tea, School, And Narrative, Jie Yu
The Secret Between Storytelling And Retelling: Tea, School, And Narrative, Jie Yu
Faculty Publications
In this paper, I will tell two of my personal stories to try to explore the secret or opaque space between the original telling and retelling of stories in narrative inquiry. Based upon my difficult struggles with the two stories of tea, school, and narrative, I suggest that narrative inquiry has to be a complex loop of relationship, reflexivity, responsibility, and recursion.

When Two Worlds Collide: Shared Experiences Of Educating Navajos Living Off The Reservation, Daniel R. Conn
The Qualitative Report
Northridge Elementary calls into question the norm - based ideals of the No Child Left Behind Act (2001). By constructing a portrait of Northridge, this study reveals the challenges indigenous students face in the ag e of standardized assessments. The overarching quest ion of this study is: Do high - stakes assessments further the endemic values of colonization? The term colonization in this study refers to federal and state governmental agencies directing what indigenous students should be taught at school despite cultural relevance. This study applies the theoretical framework of Tribal Critical Race Theory (TribalCrit), through video photography, observations, interviews …

Choices, Responsibility , And Trade - Offs: A Review Of Designing Research In The Social Sciences, Constantine S.L. Loum
The Qualitative Report
The challenge of doing research in the social sciences and other disciplines is anchored in the dilemma of finding the right research design to pursue an inquiry path leading to trustworthy evidences . Designing Research in the Social Sciences ( Maggetti, Gilardi, & Radaelli , 2013) is an elucidative narrative, adding a strong voice in helping novice and seasoned researchers to redirect their thoughts and research actions into meaningful efforts to find balance (trade - offs) in research implementation. This new tome is not the usual ‘cook book’ in the research design arena, rather it focuses your mind into appreciating …
Religion And Intimate Partner Violence: A Double-Edge Sword?, Lee E. Ross
Religion And Intimate Partner Violence: A Double-Edge Sword?, Lee E. Ross
Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum
This article examined hypothesized relations between Judeo-Christian religion and intimate partner violence. Given its complex and controversial nature, the following two questions were explored: (1) whether batterers selectively misinterpret scripture to justify or rationalize violence toward women, and (2) whether certain religious tenets around faith, the nature of marriage, the role of women and men, obedience, forgiveness, and salvation constrict and inevitably bind women to abusive relationships? An integrative literature review was employed to draw inferences among male patriarchy, religious scripture, and intimate partner violence. Overall, the findings are twofold: (1) elements of male patriarchy are included in much of …

Reconceiving A Necessary Evil: Teaching A Transferable Fyc Research Paper, Samuel James Dunn
Reconceiving A Necessary Evil: Teaching A Transferable Fyc Research Paper, Samuel James Dunn
Theses and Dissertations
The place of the research paper in first-year composition (FYC) courses is often debated in composition forums. Many argue that the a-disciplinary nature of FYC doesn't allow instructors to teach the research paper in a way that will be transferable to disciplinary writing tasks, while others say that it is possible, as long as we have a thorough understanding of the kinds of writing tasks students will face in the disciplines and specifically teach writing skills that will be transferable. To identify these more generalizable writing skills to be emphasized, I interviewed 14 professors at Brigham Young University from different …
