Soy Gaucho: Nationalism And Modernity In Argentina, Geneva M. L. Smith Jul 2013

Soy Gaucho: Nationalism And Modernity In Argentina, Geneva M. L. Smith

Anthropology ETDs

Set in rural Argentina, debates over cultural recognition, land rights, and economic opportunity have been waged throughout the countrys history. By lodging the analysis in Argentina's rural zones, this project examines the series of neoliberal economic policies that led to a widespread shift to agricultural biotechnology, the ensuing social effects including urbanization due to decreasing rural labor opportunities, and the potential for new or hybridized political economies in the form of post-neoliberalism that have emerged out of Argentina's devastating 2001 economic crisis. In recent years, there have been accelerated agronomic and demographic shifts in Argentina's rural sector as farmers turn …

All Work Cultures Discriminate, Deborah M. Weiss Jul 2013

All Work Cultures Discriminate, Deborah M. Weiss

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Courts and commentators have characterized Title VII as requiring no more and no less than the neutral treatment of men and women. Neutrality has much to recommend it as a normative principle and for many years the neutrality paradigm served women well as a legal strategy. A requirement of neutrality, however, may legally permit any neutral employment practice, whether or not it is more congenial on average to members of one sex. Such strong neutrality principles tend to perpetuate the male-oriented status quo. Gender-conscious neutrality must inevitably rest on some vision of which traits are gendered and how persistent sex …

Societal Constitutionalism, Social Movements, And Constitutionalism From Below, Gavin W. Anderson Jul 2013

Societal Constitutionalism, Social Movements, And Constitutionalism From Below, Gavin W. Anderson

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Within constitutional theory, in comparison to other fields of scholarship, the significance of transnational social movements has been relatively unexamined in the literature. Societal constitutionalism, grounded in the sociological method and open to reexamining received understandings of constitutionalism, would appear conducive to undertaking this enterprise. However, the general absence of social movements from the societal constitutionalism literature is not coincidental, and reflects a shared commitment with more conventional approaches to an institutional conception of constitutionalism, and a belief in the latter's necessary benevolence and Western origin. These assumptions reflect the limited focus of contemporary analyses of globalization and constitutionalism upon …

Changing Hearts And Minds: The Politics Of Sentimentality And The Cultural Production Of The Gay Family In New Mexico's Same-Sex Marriage Debate, Lavinia Magdalena Nicolae Jul 2013

Changing Hearts And Minds: The Politics Of Sentimentality And The Cultural Production Of The Gay Family In New Mexico's Same-Sex Marriage Debate, Lavinia Magdalena Nicolae

Anthropology ETDs

Starting in February 2004, in the aftermath of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsoms authorization of city clerks to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, same-sex marriage and LGBT families moved to the center of American politics. In the same month New Mexico succeeded in making its own mark on the national debate over same-sex marriage as Victoria Dunlap, the Sandoval County clerk, issued marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. The resulting sixty-four same-sex marriages incited New Mexico gay and lesbian activism around the issue of marriage and launched civil rights and moral debates that dominated the New …

Experience And Studying The Paranormal, Charles Emmons, Penelope Emmons Jul 2013

Experience And Studying The Paranormal, Charles Emmons, Penelope Emmons

Sociology Faculty Publications

There is a great deal of doubt in mainstream science about the appropriateness of scientific research on the ‘paranormal,’ ranging from healthy skepticism to ridicule. Even some (many? most?) scientists who dare to study the paranormal display at least a healthy degree of skepticism themselves. Some of this is no doubt a reaction to the attack from mainstream science. However, keep in mind that scientists in general, no matter how mainstream or anomalous their subject matter, have not only been trained in the methods of science, but have also been socialized mostly in a Western cultural context that privileges science …

Does Boyer’S Integrated Scholarships Model Work On The Ground? An Adaption Of Boyer’S Model For Scholarly Professional Development, William E. Boyd Jul 2013

Does Boyer’S Integrated Scholarships Model Work On The Ground? An Adaption Of Boyer’S Model For Scholarly Professional Development, William E. Boyd

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Boyer’s model of four scholarships as an integrated system engaging and integrating the scholarships of discovery, integration, application, and teaching is being increasingly adopted both by individual scholars and institutions. Here I reflect on my own adoption of this approach almost a decade ago, and I describe one application, its use in defining my professional academic profile. While this does not directly address issues of pedagogy, it provides a sound basis for improved pedagogical practice in higher education. I assess my adoption of Boyer’s model against several benchmarks grounded in the social life of academe: success of promotion; mentoring peers …

Imaginenative 2012: Ecocinema And The Indigenous Film Festival, Salma Monani, Miranda Brady Jul 2013

Imaginenative 2012: Ecocinema And The Indigenous Film Festival, Salma Monani, Miranda Brady

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Much scholarship points to how ecological concerns are never far from Indigenous struggles for political sovereignty and public participation. In this paper we turn to the Indigenous film festival as a relatively understudied yet rich site to explore such ecological concerns. Specifically, we consider, the Toronto-based ImagineNATIVE, a prominent hub in the Indigenous film festival circuit. Through examining the festival’s 2012 film selections, we highlight films with explicit and less overt eco-activist messages. While the films themselves speak to eco-imaginations, we also draw from the festival experience to consider how the event itself participates in eco-sensibilities through its …

Church Growth Missiologist And Defender Of The Faith: George G. Hunter, Iii, R. Daniel Reeves Jul 2013

Church Growth Missiologist And Defender Of The Faith: George G. Hunter, Iii, R. Daniel Reeves

Great Commission Research Journal

Reeves summarizes Hunter’s impact in McGavran missiology with professors, church planters and evangelists. He highlights Hunter’s pioneering research among secular peoples at Muscle Beach and the fifth century Celtic movement, with broad application for enlisting and equipping disciples. Reeves also emphasizes Hunter’s less reported role as friend and trusted advisor, citing his personal experience of receiving encouragement and advice while forming and facilitating the Council on Ecclesiology, a project aimed at reducing counterproductive rhetoric among several popular movements.

Finding The Way Forward: George Gill Hunter, Iii, Ronald K. Crandall Jul 2013

Finding The Way Forward: George Gill Hunter, Iii, Ronald K. Crandall

Great Commission Research Journal

Ron Crandall recounts some of the significant personal transitions, achievements, and contributions to evangelism and church growth made by his long time colleague. This brief “inside story” captures some of both the professional and personal life of this world-class scholar, and reveals his passionate pursuit to help thousands of churches and millions of secular and disenchanted peoples “find the way forward.” Never content to only talk about evangelism, George Hunter is portrayed as employing every gift available to equip the Church for its apostolic mission to spread the power of “Christ in us, the hope of glory.”

Geographic Patterns Of Early Holocene New World Dental Morphological Variation, Christopher Stojanowski, Kent Johnson, William N. Duncan Jul 2013

Geographic Patterns Of Early Holocene New World Dental Morphological Variation, Christopher Stojanowski, Kent Johnson, William N. Duncan

ETSU Faculty Works

Dental anthropology played a seminal role in early studies of the peopling of the New World, and was a foundation of the early three wave model proposed by Greenberg, Turner and Zegura. In recent years, however, developments in anthropological genetics, craniometry, and archaeological discoveries have largely omit-ted dental anthropology from debates regarding Native American origins. Here we consider this situation and reassert dental anthropology's relevance to the topic by presenting an inter-individual analysis of Paleoindian and Paleoamerican dentitions. A small set of dental morphological variables was used to estimate Gower similarity coefficients between individual specimens. The resulting similarity matrix was …

Do Open Access Electronic Theses And Dissertations Diminish Publishing Opportunities In The Social Sciences And Humanities? Findings From A 2011 Survey Of Academic Publishers, Marisa Ramirez, Joan T. Dalton, Gail Mcmillan, Max Read, Nancy H. Seamans Jul 2013

Seamans

Library Scholarship

An increasing number of higher education institutions worldwide are requiring submission of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) by graduate students and are subsequently providing open access to these works in online repositories. Faculty advisors and graduate students are concerned that such unfettered access to their work could diminish future publishing opportunities. This study investigated social sciences, arts, and humanities journal editors’ and university press directors’ attitudes toward ETDs. The findings indicate that manuscripts that are revisions of openly accessible ETDs are always welcome for submission or considered on a case-by-case basis by 82.8 percent of journal editors and 53.7 percent …

Application Of Gis And Spatial Data Modeling To Archaeology: A Case Study In The American Southwest, Veronica Maria Arias Jul 2013

Application Of Gis And Spatial Data Modeling To Archaeology: A Case Study In The American Southwest, Veronica Maria Arias

Anthropology ETDs

One of the most important methodological advances in the archaeology of the past quarter century is the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) in archaeological research. Within this time frame, GIS has evolved from an emergent geospatial technology with limited mapmaking capabilities to a technology of choice for cultural resource managers, planners, and academic archaeologists alike. This dissertation examines the evolutionary trajectory and impact of GIS in the discipline since its introduction, and its potential to support new applications of GIS-driven innovation in archaeological research. As part of this project, two separate studies were conducted. The first study assessed adoption …

The Bioarchaeology Of Changes In Social Stratification, Warfare, And Habitual Activities Among Iron Age Samnites Of Central Italy, Vitale Sparacello Jul 2013

The Bioarchaeology Of Changes In Social Stratification, Warfare, And Habitual Activities Among Iron Age Samnites Of Central Italy, Vitale Sparacello

Anthropology ETDs

This study uses a bioarchaeological approach to investigate the behavioral and social correlates of changes in skeletal properties during the Iron Age of central Italy. This was a period of demographic growth, increase in sociopolitical complexity, and social stratification. Early states were developing from simpler forms of social aggregation, and expansionistic, large-scale warfare was beginning. I analyzed the mechanical properties of Iron Age human skeletons (844 individuals) from 11 necropoleis belonging to the Oscan ethno-linguistic group (Samnites). The analysis of grave goods allowed for a division of individuals by status categories. Iron Age samples show an increase in stature compared …

"I'M Afraid [Of] My Future.": Secrecy, Biopower, And Korean High School Girls, Noelle Easterday Jul 2013

"I'M Afraid [Of] My Future.": Secrecy, Biopower, And Korean High School Girls, Noelle Easterday

Anthropology ETDs

This paper analyzes the secrets revealed by Korean high school girls. Despite their struggles being known to the Korean public-at-large, the majority of these secrets express the students dismay at not meeting the high standards expected of teenage girls in successfully preparing for the future. In this case study, the public airing of the otherwise silenced acknowledgement of the authors' perceived deficiencies and failures illuminates processes of biopower (the subject-based regulation and disciplining of bodies) embedded within the Korean nation-state building project. I explore how the Neo-Confucian principles of reverence, obedience, and self-cultivation work together with the neoliberal, post-industrial consumerist …
