Parowan Valley Potting Communities: Examining Technological Style In Fremont Snake Valley Corrugated Pottery, Scott M. Ure
Parowan Valley Potting Communities: Examining Technological Style In Fremont Snake Valley Corrugated Pottery, Scott M. Ure
Theses and Dissertations
Defining the Fremont archaeological culture has challenged archaeologists for decades. There is still considerable debate about the origins of the Fremont, their eventual demise, their genetic relationship to modern Native American tribes, and myriad other issues. In nearly a century of Fremont research, socio-political, economic, and religious complexity remain elusive subjects. Examining technological style, the manifestation of socially influenced choices during each step of production as a means of passive communication, is one useful avenue to examine Fremont material culture to uncover the social patterns they may, or may not contain. I examine whether or not technological style in Fremont …

From Long-Distance To No Distance: Performance-Based Long-Distance Education In Art And Design, Bo Gao
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper is to introduce an enhanced teaching and learning experience, which brings people in different location to act in the same spectacle, a real-time building together rather than only verbal communications in front of the screen. The “e(ating) meeting – Project of the VISIT 2012” is a teaching project undertaken in the year 2010~2013, and is a cross-cultural long-distance learning and collaboration experiments between two international universities. The objectives of this collaborative project are to develop and experiment new teaching approaches and tools through an intercultural and interactive platform in art and design. This paper unfolds the process and …

Specialized acrobatic leaping has been recognized as a key adaptive trait tied to the origin and subsequent radiation of euprimates based on its observed frequency in extant primates and inferred frequency in extinct early euprimates. Hypothesized skeletal correlates include elongated tarsal elements, which would be expected to aid leaping by allowing for increased rates and durations of propulsive acceleration at takeoff. Alternatively, authors of a recent study argued that pronounced distal calcaneal elongation of euprimates (compared to other mammalian taxa) was related primarily to specialized pedal grasping. Testing for correlations between calcaneal elongation and leaping versus grasping is complicated by …

Palaeo-Philosophy: Archaic Ideas About Space And Time, Paul S. Macdonald
Comparative Philosophy
This paper argues that efforts to understand historically remote patterns of thought are driven away from their original meaning if the investigation focuses on reconstruction of concepts, instead of cognitive complexes. My paper draws on research by Jan Assmann, Jean-Jacques Glassner, Keimpe Algra, Alex Purves, Nicholas Wyatt, and others on the cultures of Ancient Greece, Israel, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Etruria through comparative analyses of the semantic fields of spatial and temporal terms, and how these terms are shaped by their relation to the sphere of the sacred. It shows that there are three super-ordinate timeframes - the cyclical, the linear …
Humanitarianism And The Anthropology Of Hunger, Kate Klein
Humanitarianism And The Anthropology Of Hunger, Kate Klein
Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted
While the early view of hunger as the product of a world population too large to sustain has largely been eliminated, and the mainstream international community has come to accept that food insecurity results from issues of distribution rather than an insufficient global food supply, the emphasis on biotechnology in agriculture, humanitarianism in international aid, and social justice in international human rights law in the contemporary era has contributed to other barriers that prevent hunger alleviation.
In this thesis, I argue that these previous contemporary developments have had the capacity to hide hunger. My analysis of technology and humanitarian aid …
Hooked On Peers’ Drawings: Learning Through The Visual Wildfire, Nina Scott Frisch
Hooked On Peers’ Drawings: Learning Through The Visual Wildfire, Nina Scott Frisch
Learn X Design Conference Series
Children’s drawing activity has been theorized as traces of cognitive and biological development, with cultural variations as minor sources of visual and traceable influence. Even though present, less research has been done on documenting the social aspect of drawing; seeing drawing as visual communication between children. This aspect of drawing development, or learning, is visually traceable, but is still often neglected because children´s drawings can be seen in light of a discourse emphasizing the individual solitude and expression of the professional artist. Collection of drawings, observations and interviews took place in one elementary school art room for one academic year …
Does Completion Of Quantitative Courses Predict Better Quantitative Reasoning-In-Writing Proficiency?, Nathan D. Grawe
Does Completion Of Quantitative Courses Predict Better Quantitative Reasoning-In-Writing Proficiency?, Nathan D. Grawe
Numeracy
Using data from Carleton College, this study explores the connection between students’ completion of a range of quantitative courses and the quality of their quantitative reasoning in writing (QRW) as exhibited in courses throughout the undergraduate curriculum during the first two years of college. Because the assessment takes place in the context of a campus-wide initiative which has improved QRW on the whole, the study identifies course-taking patterns which predict stronger than average improvement. Results suggest QRW is not exceptionally improved by taking courses in statistics, principles of economics, or in the social sciences more broadly. QRW performance is, on …

Preventative Care And Culture, Anna Wagman
Preventative Care And Culture, Anna Wagman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper explores the intersection between culture and health. The similarities and differences between methods for preventative medicine employed by traditional and allopathic systems are discussed. These ostensibly disparate systems, in reality, display many parallels in regards to their delivery. The effects of industrial progress, and therefore cultural change, on the health of the inhabitants of rapidly urbanizing African cities are examined. Historical information from studies of Great Britain, the first area to undergo a full industrial revolution is also drawn on. These analyses essentially predict the societal issues that come with urbanization, such as the amalgamation of preexisting pollutants …
