Female Leadership In Powhatan Indian Tribes: Changes From First Contact With The Europeans To The Present Day, Brittany Allen Jul 2013

Female Leadership In Powhatan Indian Tribes: Changes From First Contact With The Europeans To The Present Day, Brittany Allen

UROP Posters

The negative effects of European colonization on Native American groups have long been observed and studied, but little attention has been given to the impact those negative effects had on the roles of women in the leadership of tribes. All Native American groups faced disease, warfare, and limitations of their rights after the arrival of European settlers in their land, but women in particular were affected by hardships that resulted from colonization. By analyzing records of women acting as chiefs in the century immediately following the Powhatan tribes’ first contact with the Europeans and comparing the high number of women …

Alien Evolutions: Darwinian Influence On The History And Transformation Of The Anglo-American Science Fiction Alien, 1885 To 1936, Greg D. Conley Jul 2013

Alien Evolutions: Darwinian Influence On The History And Transformation Of The Anglo-American Science Fiction Alien, 1885 To 1936, Greg D. Conley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation argues that the alien as a literary figure gained meaning through writers’ use of evolutionary theory and the literary grotesque as they created alien monsters. The alien pointed to foreigners, people from other countries, religions, or other social groups – strange but not totally unfamiliar. Evolutionary theory alienated many people from each other, their surroundings, and even abstract constructs that shaped their world such as Nature and Time. This alienation anxiety found its way into the literature of monsters, which used the grotesque to represent and discuss this anxiety. The alien had been human, and people as grotesque …

The Role Of Gender In Scholarly Authorship, Jevin D. West, Jennifer Jacquet, Molly M. King, Shelley J. Correll, Carl T. Bergstrom Jul 2013

The Role Of Gender In Scholarly Authorship, Jevin D. West, Jennifer Jacquet, Molly M. King, Shelley J. Correll, Carl T. Bergstrom

Sociology

Gender disparities appear to be decreasing in academia according to a number of metrics, such as grant funding, hiring, acceptance at scholarly journals, and productivity, and it might be tempting to think that gender inequity will soon be a problem of the past. However, a large-scale analysis based on over eight million papers across the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities reveals a number of understated and persistent ways in which gender inequities remain. For instance, even where raw publication counts seem to be equal between genders, close inspection reveals that, in certain fields, men predominate in the prestigious first …

The Negotiation Of Discourses For Women Who Have Emigrated From India To The United States, Suzanne Christine Schmidle Jul 2013

The Negotiation Of Discourses For Women Who Have Emigrated From India To The United States, Suzanne Christine Schmidle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

When an individual experiences a change in location and enters an unfamiliar space or place, there is often a period of adjustment that occurs due to differences in the two environments. Some of these differences may be immediately obvious to the individual upon their transition, however many times, the differences are not obvious to the eye or even to the mind. This is due to the role of discursive expectations, which are “taken for granted” truths that are engrained in and disciplined through discourses embedded in areas of society such as culture, ethnicity, and religion. Upon entering the new space …

The Best Things In Museums Are The Windows, Harrell Fletcher

The Best Things in Museums are the Windows

"As an Exploratorium Artist-in-Residence I created a project that involved traveling for four days with a group of participants from the end of the museum’s building across the Bay in a sail boat and then walking from Emeryville to the top of Mt Diablo. The trip covered about forty miles. In the group of participants were Exploratorium staff, scientists and members of the public. Each participant and various invited people along the way did presentations on topics related to the areas we were traveling through. Additional members of the public connected with the core group at more than a dozen …

Obtained By One's Own Hands: A Theory On The Middle Class Of Ancient Egypt And Funerary Stelae Of The First Intermediate Period, Christopher Walter Stelter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis is an exercise in applying classic and contemporary anthropological class theory to an ancient Egyptian context. The primary goal of this study is to argue for the emergence of a middle class during the First Intermediate Period (2118 - 1980 BC). The rise and fall of the Second Style in relief carvings found on funerary stelae will be related to the emergence of this class. As the class emerged, it took for itself this artistic style as one of its defining characteristics. By its conclusion, this thesis will have proved that a middle class did indeed arise during …

Incomplete Reflections: Addressing Potential Bias In Digital Curation, Rachael Hulvey Jul 2013

Incomplete Reflections: Addressing Potential Bias In Digital Curation, Rachael Hulvey

UROP Posters

Digital scanning technology offers many benefits to archaeology and curation in its ability to preserve virtual representations of artifacts in databases without harming the object. However, various selective pressures may limit which artifacts are digitally curated. The material of an artifact or details on an object’s surface may prevent it from scanning properly. Scans which inaccurately portray the surface detail of an artifact may be ignored by those who edit and process the files in favor of a more attractive scan. Scanning efforts designed for public outreach may favor certain artifacts over others. These selective pressures may produce unintentional bias …

Toddling Towards Childhood: A Bibliometric Analysis Of The First Qrom Lustrum (2006 - 2010), Eduardo Infante

The Qualitative Report

The first years in the life of a journal are the most difficult ones as editors need to advertise it effectively and attract worldwide researchers to safeguard its launch and maintenance. This study provides a bibliometric analysis of the first lustrum of the journal Qualitative Research in Organizational and Management (QROM) in an attempt to assess its production both in methodological and conceptual terms. The sample was made up of 66 articles by 109 (co - )authors from 66 institutions. A total of 53.2% of contributors were female and were responsible for 42.4% of the single - authored articles (compare …

Beatitude Living: Contemplating A Way Of Being Human In A Digital Civilization, Angela Ann Zukowski Jul 2013

Beatitude Living: Contemplating A Way Of Being Human In A Digital Civilization, Angela Ann Zukowski

Catholic Education Summit

The Beatitudes are central to living a full Catholic Christian Life. Pope Francis continues to call our attention to the meaning and value of Beatitude living in the 21st century. The infiltration of social media networking and the pervasive adaptation into a digital milieu is creating a new human consciousness. Furthermore, as we study the research and experimentation of the neurosciences, we begin to raise critical questions regarding what it means to be human in a digital milieu. Is it possible that we are living on the edge of a paradox that conflicts with Beatitude living? Do Catholic educators …

Charleston Library Conference

This paper supplements the panel, which was delivered in a “Lively Lunch” format and included presentations by librarians who have employed EBSCO’s Discovery System (EDS) in their academic institutions. The panelists addressed several important aspects of launching a discovery system in an academic library, such as Implementation; Information Literacy; and Assessment, Usability and Customization. The implementation component included technical aspects, business requirements, enhancing the operability of link resolvers, launch preparation, and implementation success. The information literacy portion addressed how academic reference services and library instruction have been transformed because of EDS. Assessment, Usability and Customization focused on customizing the search …

Charleston Library Conference

Western Libraries and Ingram Content Group worked together to establish a Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) program that has been incorporated into the regular acquisitions workflow at Western. Some features of the program include: all titles selected for addition to the PDA collection are filtered through the approval profiles established by the librarians, the library’s holdings are uploaded to Ingram weekly so that duplicate titles are avoided, invoices for purchased PDA titles are sent weekly, and holdings for un-purchased and purchased PDA records are updated weekly. A PDA Working Group established the program at Western by meeting with collections librarians to …
