Regress In South African Education After Apartheid, Brett Peterson, Dr. John Hawkins

In South Africa, despite positive changes in school structure and potential educational attainment, revolutionary changes to South African society interact with the current state of South African education to produce a negative educational effect.
Scalia & Garner’S Reading Law: A Civil Law For The Age Of Statutes?, James R. Maxeiner
Scalia & Garner’S Reading Law: A Civil Law For The Age Of Statutes?, James R. Maxeiner
Journal of Civil Law Studies
In Reading Law: The Interpretation of Legal Texts, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and American legal lexicographer Bryan A. Garner challenge Americans to start over in dealing with statutes in the Age of Statutes. They propose “textualism,” i.e., “that the words of a governing text are of paramount concern, and what they convey in their context is what the text means.” Textualism is meant to remedy the American lack of “a generally agreed-on approach to the interpretation of legal texts.” That deficiency makes American law unpredictable, unequal, undemocratic and political. In the book’s Foreword, Chief Judge Frank Easterbrook …
Sites Of Disquiet: The Non-Space In Spanish American Short Narratives And Their Cinematic Transformations, Ilka Kressner
Sites Of Disquiet: The Non-Space In Spanish American Short Narratives And Their Cinematic Transformations, Ilka Kressner
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Some of the most important writers of the twentieth century, including Borges, Cortázar, Rulfo, and García Márquez, have explored ambiguous sites of a disquieting nature. Their characters face merging perspectives, deferral, darkness, or emptiness. Such a space is neither a site of projection (as utopia or dystopia) nor a neutral setting (as the topos). For the characters, it is real and active, at once elusive and transforming. Despite the challenges of visualizing such slippery spaces, filmic experimentations in Spanish American cinema since the 1960s have sought to adapt these texts to the screen. Ilka Kressner’s Sites of Disquiet examines these …
Brand Kerala: Commodification Of Open Source Ayurveda, Chithprabha Kudlu
Brand Kerala: Commodification Of Open Source Ayurveda, Chithprabha Kudlu
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This dissertation aimed to understand formal and informal ayurvedic knowledge and practice through the framework of commodification, in the context of the recent emergence of global ayurvedic tourism in Kerala, India. The objective was to understand how commodification, both old and new, have affected knowledges and livelihoods of actors constituting the ayurvedic commodity chain, with a focus on `social lives' of ayurvedic pharmaceuticals and select herb-ingredients. I argue that the trajectory of commodification in Kerala provides a stark contrast to the national mainstream with its focus on classical vis-à-vis proprietary medicines. This therapy-centric business model maintained the integrity of traditional …
Design Knowledge From Practice(S), Helen Mcallister
Design Knowledge From Practice(S), Helen Mcallister
Learn X Design Conference Series
The main premise of this paper is to centralize the experiential mode as a fundamental to Design Research whether by practice–based or by practice-led knowledge. This paper will map the process of different ‘knowings’ of practice, how they manifest themselves into critical knowledge for Design. Through this researcher’s engagement with the experiential, came an understanding that could not otherwise have surfaced without the practice–based inquiry and methodologies. ‘Practice’ is a central imperative of Design, yet the nature of these activities we call ‘practices’ is never the less complex in its critical edification and defining how it contributes and shapes ‘culture …

Easier For A Camel: The Quasi-Christian Merchants Of Venice; A Literary Look At Economic History, Wayne Sandholtz, Dr. Brandie Siegfried
Easier For A Camel: The Quasi-Christian Merchants Of Venice; A Literary Look At Economic History, Wayne Sandholtz, Dr. Brandie Siegfried
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In a Shakespeare class during my junior year, I wrote a paper called “Easier for a camel: the quasi-Christian merchants of Venice” which examined the relationships between business virtue and Christian virtue in Shakespeare’s comedy The Merchant of Venice. Even though it was written centuries ago, I felt that the play had significant things to say to our modern capitalist society in which, just as in Shakespeare’s day, traditional sources of authority are being challenged by the combination of new technology with expanding economic opportunities. I decided to apply for and was given a grant from ORCA to further explore …

The Gunpowder Behind Ghana’S Cocoa Boom: Examining How International Market Pressure And British Colonial Policies Created Ghana’S Cocoa Market, Chase Arnold, Sheila Bibb
The Gunpowder Behind Ghana’S Cocoa Boom: Examining How International Market Pressure And British Colonial Policies Created Ghana’S Cocoa Market, Chase Arnold, Sheila Bibb
Journal of Undergraduate Research
At the turn of the 20th century, British imperialism renewed with remarkable vigor. The British Empire was expanded, its borders defined, and greater effort was invested into making each of its distant lands more profitable for Crown and country. A remarkable, yet often overlooked, portion of this colonial narrative belongs to the Republic of Ghana in West Africa, which was then known as the British Gold Coast. For several centuries following the first European encounters, the Gold Coast was primarily tied into the Atlantic slave trade, serving as a lucrative market where Africans could be both bought and sold for …
Saving The Maya Civilization – Ancient And Living, Landon John Hansen, Dr. Donald Forsyth
Saving The Maya Civilization – Ancient And Living, Landon John Hansen, Dr. Donald Forsyth
Journal of Undergraduate Research
One of the most significant finds of Mayan archaeology in recent years has been the elaborate stucco frieze discovered in the Central Acropolis of the ancient Mayan city, El Mirador. The frieze is significant not only because of its remarkable preservation and beautiful artistic representations, but also because of its age. The frieze, which is proposed to be depicting a scene from the Popul Vuh, predates all other known sources of the Popul Vuh mythology by more than a millennium. In fact, much speculation has been done in the past regarding the level of Spanish influence in the Popul Vuh …

Colour And Odour Drive Fruit Selection And Seed Dispersal By Mouse Lemurs, Kim Valenta, Ryan J. Burke, Sarah A. Styler, Derek A. Jackson, Amanda D. Melin, Shawn M. Lehman
Dartmouth Scholarship
Animals and fruiting plants are involved in a complex set of interactions, with animals relying on fruiting trees as food resources, and fruiting trees relying on animals for seed dispersal. This interdependence shapes fruit signals such as colour and odour, to increase fruit detectability, and animal sensory systems, such as colour vision and olfaction to facilitate food identification and selection. Despite the ecological and evolutionary importance of plant-animal interactions for shaping animal sensory adaptations and plant characteristics, the details of the relationship are poorly understood. Here we examine the role of fruit chromaticity, luminance and odour on seed dispersal by …

Modern-Day Conceptions Of Marriage In Visakhapatnam, India: “Bridging The Gap” Between Globalized Young Women And Their Parents, Courtney Petersen, Dr. Charles W. Nuckolls
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The city of Visakhapatnam hugs the shoreline of the Bay of Bengal on the East coast of Andhra Pradesh, India. Once a small collection of fishing villages, this city is now a bustling metropolis housing businesses, universities, travelers, students, and families from both metropolitan and rural backgrounds. As with most growing cities in India, Visakhapatnam is bombarded with outside influences from the western world in the form of media, global businesses, and travel as it develops as a city. This advancement in technology and interaction with global society benefits the people in Visakhapatnam by introducing them to opportunities that will …

An Observation Of Public Behavior Among Ecuadorian Orphans, Emily Miller, Dr. Charles Nuckolls
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Identity within a social structure is easily analyzed when found in a culturally traditional setting. However, when physical and mental handicaps, parental figure transience, and varying levels of familial contact become factors the social structure and the roles within that structure are not as easily defined. Research for this study was performed at an Ecuadorian orphanage where many of the children have mental and physical handicaps and where the adults they interact with change quite frequently. Based on this study, it can be concluded that a child’s role within this society and the type of interactions that child has with …
Medical Pluralism And Women’S Health: Ayurveda And Allopathy In A Changing Andhra Pradesh, Rachel Owen, Dr. John Hawkins
Medical Pluralism And Women’S Health: Ayurveda And Allopathy In A Changing Andhra Pradesh, Rachel Owen, Dr. John Hawkins
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My research took place in Andhra Pradesh, South India, in Vishakhapatnam, or Visag, for short. I studied the interaction between Allopathy (Allopathy is one of the terms used to describe western medicine, or biomedicine) and Ayurveda(Ayurveda is the traditional Hindu medicine system used in India for over 2000 years). I was originally interested in how this interaction affected midwives and pregnant mothers in the small fishing village on the edge of the city. As with most ethnographic, qualitative research, my focus changed during the first few weeks as challenges presented themselves and I had to adapt based on the resources …

We Are Widows, We Are Women: On The Oral Histories Of Low-Caste Indian Widows And How They Maintain A Sense Of Self In The Face Of Social Role Change, Suzanne Powell, Dr. Charles W. Nuckolls
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As a student of anthropology, my ORCA grant enabled me to work on analyzing and writing up my results from a field study trip I took during the Fall 2009 semester to Visakhapatnam, India. My study focused on collecting oral histories of Hindu windows living in a fishing village just outside of the city limits. While there, I focused on understanding their lives previous to and after widowhood, what being a widow meant in that society, and how they felt about and reacted to the changes that came into their lives with the deaths of their husbands.

Agency At Hacienda Pancota: Early Colonial Daily Consumption Of A Contested Age And Material Culture, Collin Roderick Gillenwater
Agency At Hacienda Pancota: Early Colonial Daily Consumption Of A Contested Age And Material Culture, Collin Roderick Gillenwater
Theses and Dissertations
The artifact assemblage of indigenous, imported, and contraband material goods at use in the Izalcos region of western El Salvador's early colonial period were analyzed to determine material agency. The archaeological remains of a specific hacienda and its residents' daily consumption were analyzed spatially and typologically. The resulting data concluded in the interpretation of Hacienda Pancota residents' adapting their lives with remarkable versatility during Spanish occupation. Specialization of place becomes more heavily emphasized with the incorporation of European goods, an important factor defining agency at Hacienda Pancota.

Energy And Emotions: Transdisciplinary Design Education For Resource Conservation, Tatu Marttila, Karthikeya Archarya, Lutz Gegner, Till Bovermann
Learn X Design Conference Series
In our contemporary world we are using resources extensively to the point of their depletion. The call for more sustainable ways of living is louder than ever before, asking for a better awareness of the flows of resources and energy. This paper looks into existing design perspectives towards energy use in our daily living. By exploring relevant literature in social sciences and in design, and earlier research related to energy use, we identify a need to connect the design for conservation more strongly with human emotions and their relations in the social realm, and thus iterate the systems collaboratively in …

"Music Is The Voice Of A Culture": Cajun And Creole Musicians Speak About The Power Of Music To Preserve, Represent, And Celebrate South Louisiana's French Heritage, Moriah Istre
Student Theses and Dissertations
Cajun and Creole music, also known as French music, represents a vital part of South Louisiana's culture. The music I heard growing up instilled a strong sense of pride and belonging for me in connecting to my heritage, and the music grounds other Creoles and Cajuns in this common heritage as well. My passion for the music prompted me to examine the role that French music plays in preserving and transmitting Louisiana's Cajun and Creole cultures. I began my research by interviewing several of South Louisiana's musicians best qualified to speak about the subject. Each emphasized three main themes that …

National Geo-Graphics: The New "Federalism Function" Of American Tort Law, Riaz Tejani
San Diego Law Review
“Community” was once the wellspring of norms governing risk, harm, and compensation. Today, people, goods, and information move at such high speed across such wide distances that markets come to replace community as the measure of socially “reasonable” conduct. Alongside this rise of mass-market industrial and media actors, American tort law has experienced unprecedented influence of national rules upon once purely state common law doctrines. Thus far the shift has been only partial—through constitutional rights and federal preemption, it has impacted certain industries such as bioengineering but left untouched others such as medical care. Critics of this partial federalization espouse …
Art And Design Schools In Transition: The Uncertain Future Of The Workshop Model, Martin Egge Lundell
Art And Design Schools In Transition: The Uncertain Future Of The Workshop Model, Martin Egge Lundell
Learn X Design Conference Series
Recent reforms in higher education promote standardization and comparability. However, the academic disciplines set the standard that the art and design schools are expected to adapt to. This new and more theoretical approach can come in direct conflict with the traditional way of teaching at the art and design schools. These schools have traditionally been teaching in accordance with a workshop-oriented method, where theory is more related to and part of practice than in the academic sphere.
