An Integrated Approach To Diabetes Prevention: Anthropology, Public Health, And Community Engagement, Janet Page-Reeves, Shiraz I. Mishra, Joshua Niforatos, Lidia Regino, Andrew Gingerich, Robert Bulten
An Integrated Approach To Diabetes Prevention: Anthropology, Public Health, And Community Engagement, Janet Page-Reeves, Shiraz I. Mishra, Joshua Niforatos, Lidia Regino, Andrew Gingerich, Robert Bulten
The Qualitative Report
Diabetes is an enormous public health problem with particular concern within Hispanic communities and among individuals with low wealth. However, attempts to expand the public health paradigm to include social determinants of health rarely include analysis of social and contextual factors considered outside the purview of health research. As a result, conceptualization of the dynamics of diabetes health disparities remains shallow. We argue that using a holistic anthropological lens has the potential to offer insights regarding the nature of the interface between broader social determinants, health outcomes and health disparity. In a primarily Hispanic, immigrant community in Albuquerque, New Mexico, …
Five Vignettes: Stories Of Teacher Advocacy And Parental Involvement, Adrienne C. Goss
Five Vignettes: Stories Of Teacher Advocacy And Parental Involvement, Adrienne C. Goss
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative research can, and sometimes should, utilize fictional representations, particularly when attempting to connect to and collaborate with communities outside of the academy. This work utilizes an arts - informed methodology of representation to communicate the importance and potential consequences of teacher advocacy and parental involvement. Specifically, I use fiction as a mode of representing the interview data that my research participant and I generated. After analyzing the data using grounded theory methods, I chose to represent the data with five vignettes. Vignette 1 introduces the reader to Ms. Abeni, a public school teacher who is passionate about educating every …
The Piano Music Of Jose Montserrat Maceda, Frances Alfaras Niduaza
The Piano Music Of Jose Montserrat Maceda, Frances Alfaras Niduaza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The obscurity of Maceda's piano works led to this study; ergo this will contribute to their understanding and significance. His "Two Pianos, Four Winds," composed in 1996 for clarinet, bassoon, horn, trombone, and two pianos, will be the focus of this study. His other piano works, "Music for Five Pianos," (1994), "Music for Two Pianos and Four Percussions," (2000), and "Sujeichon - A Korean Court Music for Four Pianos," (2002), will be briefly discussed. In order to fully comprehend the conceptual framework of his compositions, one has to be cognizant of his discourse, i.e., the influences of Western European avant-garde, …

Celebrity Endorsements In Print And Twitter: Comparing Brand Name Memorability And Credibility, Lauren Palmieri
Theses
The present study investigated the differences in brand name memorability and credibility of celebrity-endorsed advertisements presented in print and in Twitter. An experiment was conducted between two groups of participants. One group received treatments for print and the other for Twitter. Participants reviewed five advertisements, one of which contained a celebrity, then responded to 11 credibility belief statements and were tested on their memorability of the celebrity-endorsed ad. Significant differences were found in favor of remembering, buying and trusting a brand/product in celebrity-endorsed print ads. Significant differences were also found in the memorability of a celebrity-endorsed ad. The print group …

Needs Met Through Role-Playing Games: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of Dungeons & Dragons, Aubrie S. Adams
Needs Met Through Role-Playing Games: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of Dungeons & Dragons, Aubrie S. Adams
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is an immersive fantasy role-playing game (RPG) which allows players to fulfill real-world social needs through interaction. Although D&D may appear to be a game of simple make-believe, the emotions, camaraderie, and accomplishments experienced by players are real, thus suggesting that RPGs have real-world implications for players. Therefore, the goal of this study is to explore the ways in which players fulfill social needs through group communication during the context of D&D table-top role-play. Utilizing Bormann’s (1972) fantasy theme analysis, this study uses a case study approach to identify four themes which emerged within player talk …
Rethinking Representations Of Sexual And Gender-Based Violence: A Case Study Of The Liberian Truth And Reconciliation Commission, James West

Focusing on forced marriage or the ‘bush wife phenomenon’ as a category of abuse in the Liberian Civil War, this paper seeks to critically assess the Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s analysis of wartime abuses and its representation of sexual and gender-based violence.
Doctors And Sheikhs: "Truths" In Virginity Discourse In Jordanian Media, Ebtihal Mahadeen
Doctors And Sheikhs: "Truths" In Virginity Discourse In Jordanian Media, Ebtihal Mahadeen
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article is concerned with the role Jordanian media play in circulating certain discourses on virginity, namely religious and medical discourses, which are presented as "truths" that ultimately maintain the conservative status quo with regards to Jordanian women's sexuality. It is argued that media discussions (on the textual, production, and consumption levels) largely perpetuate patriarchal control over women's sexuality and render invisible more progressive points of view. Simultaneously, critical opinions expressed at any of these levels, while vastly important, operate from within the same discursive fields and are thus rendered less radical.
Living In The Garden Of Perhaps: Ordinary Life As An Obstacle To Political Change In Israel, Katherine Natanel
Living In The Garden Of Perhaps: Ordinary Life As An Obstacle To Political Change In Israel, Katherine Natanel
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article explores how gender in part shapes the contours of small worlds or ‘elsewheres’ (Haraway 1992), constructed by Jewish Israelis as they pursue ‘ordinary lives’ in a context of conflict and sustained political violence. Situating as central the experiences, perceptions and behaviours of the dominant sector in Jewish Israeli society—middle-class Ashkenazi Jews living in Israel’s urban centres—the article appraises the work done by the production and maintenance of dual worlds, what lies at stake in their loss and their implications for political change. By building upon the work of feminist and queer theorists who consider the centrality of intimacy …

Family Structures Of Homeless Men, Lauren Olson
Family Structures Of Homeless Men, Lauren Olson
Social Work Student Works
I spent the semester exploring the family structures of homeless men in Minneapolis through interviews and participant observation. Originally, I was curious if differences in family structures affected men before, during and after being in a state of homeless. Specifically, I asked men about their family situations growing up, as well as the families they've created as adults. Through interviews with informants I was hoping to discover connections between how family structures and relationships as a child affected their relationships today. By creating meaningful friendships with the homeless men and staff within in Minneapolis, I was able to make a …

Breaking In My Anthropological Shoes: Reflections On My First Days Of Fieldwork, Casiana I. Pascariu
Breaking In My Anthropological Shoes: Reflections On My First Days Of Fieldwork, Casiana I. Pascariu
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
This paper explores the first day of ethnographic fieldwork conducted by an M.A. student. Starting in a non-Roma community, and trying to reach the Roma, I describe the difficulty of conducting fieldwork for the first time. I discuss the day I introduced myself to the community, the awkward and unnatural behavior of teachers toward my future informants, and the confusion and shyness of the Roma students felt in my presence.
“Last Night All The Synagogues In Germany Were Burned”: Intimacy And Ethnographic Practice In A Familial Life History, William Lempert
“Last Night All The Synagogues In Germany Were Burned”: Intimacy And Ethnographic Practice In A Familial Life History, William Lempert
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
Through a series of life history interviews with my Grandmother in her Ft. Lauderdale apartment, I reflect on the underappreciated advantages of fostering intimate interpersonal relationships in ethnographic practice. Relating examples from my grandmother’s description of her experiences in Nazi Germany, I argue that intimacy can in many cases serve as a powerful tool to make research more rigorous by helping to forestall temptations to overgeneralize interview data to confirm preconceived expectations, while also promoting deeper insights into the diversity and subtly of individual conceptions of self. I connect this argument to larger debates regarding the advantages and disadvantages of …
Measuring The Evolution Of Toolmaking Complexity: Indices Of Operational Complexity, Robert A. Mahaney
Measuring The Evolution Of Toolmaking Complexity: Indices Of Operational Complexity, Robert A. Mahaney
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
Archaeologists and animal behaviorists have provided increasingly sophisticated descriptions of how hominids and animals construct operational sequences. The ability to translate these detailed descriptions into a measurable comparative format of relative complexity would provide a useful tool for describing patterns of evolutionary change. Cyclomatic Complexity, k-paths, and k-cycles are three metrics from computer science and graph theory that can index the Operational Complexity of an operational sequence. These methods are applied to the production of an Acheulean handaxe and various animal behaviors.
The Social Construction Of Childhood Bullying Through U.S. News Media, Rachel Wayne
The Social Construction Of Childhood Bullying Through U.S. News Media, Rachel Wayne
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
For the past ten years, childhood bullying has been heavily discussed in public discourse, through increased news reporting, discussion in awareness campaigns, and court proceedings. The characterization of bullying in the media is symptomatic of this discourse; moreover, it reflects the social construction of bullying. In particular, news media’s emotional and scientific portrayal of bullying has inspired criminalization of the act and defined bullying as a normative trend of deviant behavior—a marked difference from its previous portrayal as an isolated but treatable act. In this paper, I report the findings from a content analysis of articles from mainstream U.S. news …
An Exploration Of The Social Effectiveness Of Political Kidnapping Testimonios In Colombia, María Del Pilar File-Muriel
An Exploration Of The Social Effectiveness Of Political Kidnapping Testimonios In Colombia, María Del Pilar File-Muriel
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
The social destruction resulting from seven-decades of armed conflict places Colombia among the top countries in human rights violations in the Americas. Advocates for kidnapping victims in Colombia believe that survival stories or testimonios present a possibility for generating social awareness in the general society that could lead to social change. Through textual analysis, tracing the circulation of three testimonios, and interviews with Colombian university students and members of NGOs, this paper explores whether testimonios produced in the Colombian context by political elites and victims of kidnapping serve as vehicles to increase social awareness. Initial interviews reveal that though there …
Indigenous People And Political Agenda: The Issue Of Social And Ecological Change Of The Nomadic Siberian, The Evenki, In Russia, Jaehoon Lee
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
Siberia is one of a few regions of the world in which hunter-gatherer communities survived until very recently. Many of their descendants have sustained their old subsistence economies, such as hunting and fishing, nomadism, or reindeer herding. This paper contains the ethnohistory of the indigenous Evenki people in Siberia and provides a critical summary of how changes of colonial political systems and management policies throughout the Evenki’s history have affected their cultural identity and changed their concept of territorial value. It is emphasized in this paper that, as seen in the case of the Evenki in Siberia, a sophisticated understanding …
