A series of interviews conducted in Amman, Jordan and Louisville, Kentucky posed the following questions: “How is information and communication technology (ICT) use affecting interpersonal communication patterns within the displaced Iraqi community in the US and Jordan?” and “What are the factors that limit the proliferation of the internet as a communication tool in that community?” Participants were individuals with legal refugee status and Iraqi nationality who left Iraq after the beginning of the 2003 Iraq War. Eight interviews were conducted in Louisville during the summer of 2012 and twelve were conducted in Amman during November 2012. Participants were asked …

The Search For Interpretation Sovereignty: Accommodating Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute) Voice In Protected Area Interpretation, Rachel E. Lahoff Dec 2013

The Search For Interpretation Sovereignty: Accommodating Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute) Voice In Protected Area Interpretation, Rachel E. Lahoff

Anthropology Theses

Within the Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute) ancestral territory, an area that spans four states including Nevada, Utah, California and Arizona, there are abundant protected areas that are managed by both federal and state agencies. These agencies utilize interpretation as a means to educate the public about natural and cultural resources on the landscape, in situ. In this paper, I argue that protected area interpretation in the Nuwuvi ancestral territory follows a hegemonic model, in that it reflects cultural hegemony that places western science discourses over other discourses, including Nuwuvi ways of knowing. As a result, natural science themes dominate interpretation over …

Interaction Of Ppara, Cd36 And Th17 In Angiotensin 11-Induced Hypertension, Abdullah Odah Alatawi Dec 2013

Interaction Of Ppara, Cd36 And Th17 In Angiotensin 11-Induced Hypertension, Abdullah Odah Alatawi

Theses (Pre-2016)

Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor alpha (PPARa) is known to exert many cardiorenal protective effects. In contrast, T- helper cell 17 (ThI7) and scavenger receptor CD36 have been implicated in hypertension (HTN) and Inflammation. In addition, PPARa has been found to promote CD36 function. We hypothesized that PPARa exerts anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting CD36-induced Th17 proliferation and differentiation in the kidney in Angiotensin II (AngII)-induced renal injury. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of PPARa in amelioration of hypertensive renal injury due to CD36-mediated Th17 activation in HTN. In animals treated with WY14643, a PPARa agonist, or GW64 …

When Isaac Was A Priest, John W. Fadden Dec 2013

When Isaac Was A Priest, John W. Fadden

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"On his deathbed, the patriarch Isaac received the important men from the city to talk to him. Among these men was an unnamed priest of God who requested Isaac to tell him a word (T. Isaac 4.8). In this moment, the Testament of Isaac11 depicts Isaac as a priestly authority who is able to instruct priests. If you have not read ancient narratives in which Isaac plays a role, but have only read Genesis, you might be confused: Why does it represent Isaac in this manner? Was …

Turn And Brake Signal System For A Bicycle, Steven Thomas Hamilton, Christian Michael Orsi Dec 2013

Turn And Brake Signal System For A Bicycle, Steven Thomas Hamilton, Christian Michael Orsi

Electrical Engineering

The common motorist views bicyclists as unpredictable on city streets and often lack experience sharing the road with motorists. The key to integrating bicyclists and motor vehicles on the same road with both parties feeling comfortable around one another lies in a common means of communication. Bicycles lack a signaling system based on lights, like that of a motor vehicle, which other motorists easily read and interpret. The proposed system integrates Cypress Semiconductor’s Programmable System on Chip 5 (PSoC 5) and an array of sensors to detect key changes in the bikes behavior. The PSoC 5 analyzes the data from …

Development And Validation Of An Absorption Sensor For Time-Resolved Measurements Of Co And Co2, Kyle Thurmond Dec 2013

Development And Validation Of An Absorption Sensor For Time-Resolved Measurements Of Co And Co2, Kyle Thurmond

HIM 1990-2015

A sensor was developed for simultaneous measurements of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide fluctuations in internal combustion engine exhaust gases. This sensor utilizes low-cost and compact LEDs that emit in the 3-5[micro]m wavelength range which are more appropriate for practical applications than the more traditionally used lasers. An affordable, fast response sensor that can measure these gases has broad application that can lead to more efficient, fuel flexible engines and regulations of harmful emissions. LEDs have a more spectrally broad and diverging emission than lasers which presented many design challenges. The optical design software ZEMAX was utilized to overcome these …

Development Of A Control Banding Method For Selecting Respiratory Protection Against Bioaerosols, Jacques Lavoie, Eve Neesham-Grenon, Maximilien Debia, Yves Cloutier, Geneviève Marchand

Smooth Muscle-Specific Myosin Phosphatase Target Subunit 1 (Mypt1): An Important Piece Of The Puzzle., Satish Rattan

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers

Dear Sir:

We have read with great interest a recent article by Dr. He et al. in the June issue of Gastroenterology.1 The studies provide strong evidence in favor of the concept that smooth muscle–specific myosin phosphatase target subunit 1 (MYPT1) of myosin light chain phosphatase (MLCP) plays a critical role in the agonist-induced contraction/relaxation of the smooth muscle. This was shown in their studies using animals with knocked out MYPT1-/-. The investigators employed the Cre-loxP system in which they used the promoter region and exon 1 of Mypt1 flanked by 2 loxP sites …

East Coast Salt Marsh Response To Sea Level Rise: Microbial Community Function And Structure, Matt R. Simon Dec 2013

East Coast Salt Marsh Response To Sea Level Rise: Microbial Community Function And Structure, Matt R. Simon

All Theses And Dissertations

Coastal salt marshes are under stress from anthropogenic climate change-induced sea level rise (SLR). Sediment microbial decomposition is a major driver of marsh subsidence and any impact of SLR on this biotic process would have a direct effect on marsh surface elevation relative to sea level. Furthermore, sensitivity to SLR of microbial community composition may play a role in the functional response. I collected sediment from six coastal marshes on the United States Atlantic East coast, exposed it to simulated sea level rise and measured total respired carbon over a three week period. My results indicated that SLR caused a …

Clinical Research Challenges: Insight From A Pilot Study At An Academic Healthcare Center, Gretchen E. Maurer Dec 2013

Clinical Research Challenges: Insight From A Pilot Study At An Academic Healthcare Center, Gretchen E. Maurer

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

An investigational clinical research study was conducted at an academic healthcare center evaluating memantine as an adjunct to opioid therapy for treatment of chronic low back pain. The N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) receptor is located in pain signaling neuronal synapses of the central nervous system. The receptor binds the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate in addition to NMDA, to increase the magnitude of the perception of pain. Memantine (Namenda©) is a highly tolerated NMDA receptor antagonist which is currently prescribed in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The purpose of the non-randomized pilot study without placebo was to evaluate the use of adding memantine as …

Dying For A Solution: Incidental Taking Under The Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Andrew G. Ogden Dec 2013

Dying For A Solution: Incidental Taking Under The Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Andrew G. Ogden

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

The almost century-old Migratory Bird Treaty Act (“MBTA”) is straining to fulfill its statutory purpose of protecting migratory birds from the changing and growing threats of a modern industrial society. With approximately 600 million bird deaths per year from a host of anthropogenic activities and infrastructure, including alternative energy projects, oil and gas development, antennas, power lines and buildings, migratory bird populations are under stress that will increase significantly in the near future from a momentous growth in wind energy activity.

Since the 1970s, the Fish and Wildlife Service (“FWS”) has attempted to reconcile the MBTA’s conservation policy and strict …

Articulating Moral Bases For Regional Responses To Deforestation And Climate Change: Africa, Amelia Chizwala Peterson Dec 2013

Articulating Moral Bases For Regional Responses To Deforestation And Climate Change: Africa, Amelia Chizwala Peterson

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Deforestation and desertification, archenemies of efforts to maintain forests as sinks for greenhouse gas emissions, are marching on unabated in Africa, where 90 percent of forests were lost in West Africa over the last century alone. Wangari Maathai, founder of the Green Belt Movement, whose work to restore some of Kenya’s decimated forests predates the connections made by the climate science community between deforestation and climate change, wrote:

Today we are faced with a challenge that calls for a shift in our thinking, so that humanity stops threatening its lifesupport system. We are called to assist the Earth to heal …

See Repose Run: Setting The Boundaries Of The Rule Of Repose In Environmental Trespass And Nuisance Cases, Jill E. Evans Dec 2013

See Repose Run: Setting The Boundaries Of The Rule Of Repose In Environmental Trespass And Nuisance Cases, Jill E. Evans

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Application of the rule of repose to environmental contamination claims for trespass and nuisance will preclude recovery for plaintiffs who discover the harm or injury outside the repose period. The rule of repose is subject neither to the discovery rule or other equitable tolling devices and runs from the date of the defendant’s culpable conduct. As a consequence, the rule extinguishes claims regardless of accrual of the cause of action. Environmental plaintiffs suffering property damage are particularly vulnerable to the repose bar as harm can occur over many years through the migration of unseen contaminants. Operation of the rule of …

A Test Of Whether Human Handling Causes Developmental Or Habituation Effects On The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Stress Response Of Young American Kestrels (Falco Sparverius), Erin Leigh Wonder Dec 2013

A Test Of Whether Human Handling Causes Developmental Or Habituation Effects On The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Stress Response Of Young American Kestrels (Falco Sparverius), Erin Leigh Wonder

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Early exposure to stressors affects subsequent stress responses in both mammalian and avian species, with the likelihood for lasting effects depending, in part, on the magnitude of the stressor. However, it is unclear whether lasting effects are the result of developmental changes to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis or habituation to the stressor. I investigated the effects of human handling, a known stressor, in free-living American kestrel (Falco sparverius) nestlings to determine if this brief, non-invasive stressor causes lasting changes in the stress response of handled birds, and whether alterations in the stress response were the result of developmental …

In the present study an evaluation of the influence of ongoing scent-food pairings on the performance of the rats in early mine detection training was conducted. Twenty young rats in APOPO’s mine detection rat program were divided into two groups and exposed to five daily stimulus-food pairing sessions each week. For the experimental group the stimulus was the …

Evaluation Of Modafinil In Preclinical Behavioral Assays Of Abuse Liability, Amanda J. Quisenberry Dec 2013

Evaluation Of Modafinil In Preclinical Behavioral Assays Of Abuse Liability, Amanda J. Quisenberry

Dissertations

Modafinil is an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of narcolepsy with efficacy in the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift-work sleep disorder. Modafinil’s wake-promoting and cognitiveenhancing effects are reportedly similar to those of traditional psychostimulants, but without the side effects typically associated with these substances. Modafinil has also been investigated as an agonist replacement therapy for psychostimulant dependence, although results of clinical trials are equivocal. Few studies have examined its behavioral effects in combination with psychostimulants and the neuropharmacological actions of modafinil are not well understood. The primary aim of this study was to assess modafinil’s …

Old English Ecologies: Environmental Readings Of Anglo-Saxon Texts And Culture, Ilse Schweitzer Vandonkelaar Dec 2013

Old English Ecologies: Environmental Readings Of Anglo-Saxon Texts And Culture, Ilse Schweitzer Vandonkelaar

Dissertations

Conventionally, scholars have viewed representations of the natural world in Anglo-Saxon (Old English) literature as peripheral, static, or largely symbolic: a “backdrop” before which the events of human and divine history unfold. In “Old English Ecologies,” I apply the relatively new critical perspectives of ecocriticism and placebased study to the Anglo-Saxon canon to reveal the depth and changeability in these literary landscapes. Overall, this interdisciplinary study of Anglo-Saxon texts brings together literary and environmental sources and modes of inquiry to explore the place of humans (and non-humans) within the natural environments of Anglo-Saxon England, as well as the ways in …
