An Examination Of The Best Practices Of Experiential Marketing In Selected Popular Beverage Companies, Taylor Matthews

Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration

In recent years, marketing efforts have shifted from traditional marketing strategies toward experiential marketing in order to ensure that consumers become emotionally attached to a brand. Experiential marketing strategies help companies create relationships with consumers and engage them through unique and memorable experiences. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of experiential marketing in three popular beverage companies. The research for this study was conducted using a best practices matrix created by the researcher, which examined experiential marketing strategies for selected popular beverage companies in the soft drink industry. The results of this study indicate that each …

Census And Mapping Of Chorro Creek Bog Thistle In Reservoir Canyon, San Luis Obispo, Ca, Tyler Michael Lutz

Biological Sciences

Chorro Creek bog thistle (Cirsium fontinale var. obispoense) is a federally endangered variety of Fountain thistle endemic to western San Luis Obispo County. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service knows of nineteen populations, many with multiple colonies. A population was discovered in the Reservoir Canyon Natural Reserve in 2001, but has not been monitored or described since the time of its discovery. In fall of 2013, a census of the population was performed, the four colonies were mapped, and a floristic survey was conducted. A field experiment was initiated to determine if reducing the riparian canopy coverage can …

Compromise Of Endogenous Neuropeptide W Production Abrogates The Dipsogenic And Pressor Effects Of Angiotensin Ii In Adult Male Rats, A. T. Pate, G. L.C. Yosten, W. K. Samson Dec 2013

Compromise Of Endogenous Neuropeptide W Production Abrogates The Dipsogenic And Pressor Effects Of Angiotensin Ii In Adult Male Rats, A. T. Pate, G. L.C. Yosten, W. K. Samson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Neuropeptide W (NPW), an endogenous ligand for the G-protein coupled receptor GPR7, is produced in neurones in the rat hypothalamus and brain stem known to be important in the control of food intake and the neuroendocrine response to stress. In previous studies, central administration of NPW during the light phase increased food and water intake and elevated prolactin and corticosterone levels in conscious, unrestrained male rats. In the present study, central administration of small-interfering RNA (siRNA) reduced NPW levels in the hypothalamus and resulted in a failure of angiotensin II to stimulate water drinking or increase mean arterial pressure. In …

Phosphatidic Acid Interacts With A Myb Transcription Factor And Regulates Its Nuclear Localization And Function In Arabidopsis, Xuemin Wang, Hongyan Yao, Geliang Wang, Liang Guo Dec 2013

Phosphatidic Acid Interacts With A Myb Transcription Factor And Regulates Its Nuclear Localization And Function In Arabidopsis, Xuemin Wang, Hongyan Yao, Geliang Wang, Liang Guo

Biology Department Faculty Works

Phosphatidic acid (PA) has emerged as a class of cellular mediators involved in various cellular and physiological processes, but little is known about its mechanism of action. Here we show that PA interacts with WEREWOLF (WER), a R2R3 MYB transcription factor involved in root hair formation. The PA-interacting region is confined to the end of the R2 subdomain. The ablation of the PA binding motif has no effect on WER binding to DNA, but abolishes its nuclear localization and its function in regulating epidermal cell fate. Inhibition of PA production by phospholipase Dζ also suppresses WER’s nuclear localization, root hair …

Prey Plasticity Responses To A Native And Nonnative Predator, Alexandra Hooks Dec 2013

Prey Plasticity Responses To A Native And Nonnative Predator, Alexandra Hooks

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental stimuli is exceedingly common across systems and taxa. For instance, predation risk in many gastropods can induce a variety of defenses including growing thicker shells, growing shells of different shapes, and developing apertural teeth. However, the role of coevolution between species that produce these defense responses and their consumers is not well known. This thesis examines the responses of an ovoviviparous gastropod (Littorina saxatilis) with low dispersal from three different habitats (marsh habitat, rocky habitat, and cobble stone habitat) to the presence of chemical cues from a native (Dyspanopeus sayi) and nonnative (Hemigrapsus sanguineus) …

Using Quantitative Genetics Methods To Estimate Heritability Of Larval Co2-Resistance In A Coastal Marine Fish, Alex James Malvezzi Dec 2013

Using Quantitative Genetics Methods To Estimate Heritability Of Larval Co2-Resistance In A Coastal Marine Fish, Alex James Malvezzi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Marine organisms are under pressure to adapt to anthropogenic changes that are rapidly altering ocean water chemistry. Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have caused an increase in atmospheric CO2 which is partly absorbed by the world's oceans, thereby reducing ocean pH, aragonite and calcite saturation states in a process known as ocean acidification (OA). Concern over these changes has caused a surge in scientific interest to better understand and predict how OA affects marine organisms from single celled algae to marine calcifying invertebrates and vertebrates such as fish. Since most studies thus far have focused on short-term responses of …

The Role Of The Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi In Nutrient Cycling In Long Island Sound, Ny, Laura Mae Treible

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Gelatinous zooplankton blooms have been increasing in magnitude and frequency globally. Seasonal variations in food availability and temperature can trigger a population bloom and subsequent crash in coastal and estuarine waters. Long Island Sound (LIS) is a highly-productive urban estuary. Due to its proximity to New York City and annual summer hypoxia, there has been substantial focus on anthropogenic nutrient inputs and reductions to LIS. When determining nutrient budgets, an important process is the recycling of nutrients within a system. Gelatinous zooplankton, including the most common species in LIS, the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi, are capable of high rates of nutrient …

Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 5 (STAT5) is a transcription factor that is critical for various biological processes including hematopoiesis, liver metabolism and mammary gland development. However, persistent activation of STAT5 has been causally linked to human leukemia and solid tumor formation. Since STAT5 is important for normal physiological functions and aberrant activity can promote cancer, accurate regulation of STAT5 is essential. As a transcription factor, STAT5 must gain entry into the nucleus to act, and one means of controlling its activity is to regulate its cellular localization. This study explores the nuclear trafficking mechanisms of STAT5a that may …

An Oop Based Four-Bar Mechanism Design And Simulation (4mds) Software, Abhijit Toravi Dec 2013

An Oop Based Four-Bar Mechanism Design And Simulation (4mds) Software, Abhijit Toravi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Despite having been a research topic alive for a long time, various proposed solutions to planar mechanism design for the approximate motion synthesis have been non-linear in nature. In general, the algorithms proposed are computationally expensive and require dealing with the type and dimension synthesis separately. The thesis presents an interactive software tool for unified type and dimension synthesis of planar four bar mechanism and its simulation. It implements an efficient and linear algorithm that naturally extracts the geometric constraints of a motion and leads directly to the type and dimensions of a mechanism for motion generation. The software has …

Lipid Exchange Between Borrelia Burgdorferi And Host Cells, Jameson Thatcher Crowley Dec 2013

Lipid Exchange Between Borrelia Burgdorferi And Host Cells, Jameson Thatcher Crowley

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines the mechanism of transfer of B. burgdorferi-derived antigenic lipids to non-phagocytic eukaryotic cells and how the mechanism of transfer of foreign antigenic bacterial lipids could contribute to the pathogenesis of Lyme disease. Lipid rafts are structural subdomains of the plasma membrane that are primarily found in eukaryotic cells due to the presence of cholesterol and glycosphingolipids. Interestingly, the presence of these membrane subdomains is also shared with the spirochetal prokaryote B. burgdorferi. The presence of free cholesterol and cholesterol-glycolipids in B. burgdorferi creates an opportunity for lipid-lipid interactions with constituents of the lipid rafts in eukaryotic cells. …

Material Properties Of Zooplankton And Nekton From The California Current, Kaylyn Nichole Becker Dec 2013

Material Properties Of Zooplankton And Nekton From The California Current, Kaylyn Nichole Becker

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This study measured the material properties of zooplankton, Pacific hake (Merluccius productus), Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas), and two species of myctophids (Symbolophorus californiensis and Diaphus theta) collected from the California Current ecosystem. The density contrast (g) was measured for euphausiids, decapods (Sergestes similis), amphipods (Primno macropa, Phronima sp. | and Hyperiid spp.), siphonophore bracts, chaetognaths, larval fish, crab megalopae, larval squid, and medusae. Morphometric data (length, width, and height) were collected for these taxa. Density contrasts varied within and between zooplankton taxa. The mean and standard deviation for euphausiid density contrast were 1.059 ± 0.009. Relationships between zooplankton density contrast …

Metaphors Of Body And Home: A Study Of The Anatomical Illustration In 'Ma'aseh Tuviyah', Yael Levy Morantz Dec 2013

Metaphors Of Body And Home: A Study Of The Anatomical Illustration In 'Ma'aseh Tuviyah', Yael Levy Morantz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

An illustration that compares a dissected body to a house is the subject of this thesis. The illustration opens the pathology chapter of Ma'aseh Tuviyah, a Hebrew encyclopedic manuscript, written by the Jewish physician Tobias Cohen at the turn of the eighteenth century. The body and the house are mirror images that strengthen the metaphor BODY IS HOUSE, a metaphor thoroughly developed in the text that follows the illustration. Aided by architectural terms, this metaphor was designed to assist the medical student in understanding the ailments of the body. This thesis argues that the illustration, as an adjunct to the …

Physical Activity And Genetics As Determinants Of Limb Bone Structure, Ian Jacob Wallace Dec 2013

Physical Activity And Genetics As Determinants Of Limb Bone Structure, Ian Jacob Wallace

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The skeleton has the capacity to adjust its structure and strength throughout life in response to loads borne during physical activity. Typically, loading promotes bone formation, retards bone loss, and ultimately enhances structure and strength. Based on this observation, many anthropologists consider it possible to deduce the physical activity levels of ancient human populations by analyzing their skeletal remains. Populations with thick, strong bones are inferred to have been very physically active, while populations with slender, fragile bones are inferred to have been more sedentary. Although the responsiveness of bone to applied loads is well documented, non- mechanical factors, particularly …

Tell Me Something Good: Depression And The Social Sharing Of Positive Life Events, Rachel Eva Hershenberg Dec 2013

Tell Me Something Good: Depression And The Social Sharing Of Positive Life Events, Rachel Eva Hershenberg

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examined the social sharing of positive life events, referred to as capitalization, among a sample of individuals with a range of current depressive symptomatology. Capitalization is an interpersonal strategy that has the potential to enhance positive emotions, build cognitive resources, and strengthen relationships. Remiss in the depression research has been an examination of responses to positive life events in an interpersonal context. Some data suggests that those with depressive symptoms may be particularly responsive to the capitalization process; other data suggests that those with greater depressive symptoms may be less likely to engage in this behavior and might …

Géotropisme De Chamoiseau, Jean-Louis Cornille Dec 2013

Géotropisme De Chamoiseau, Jean-Louis Cornille

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

There seems to be a strange parallel between the vegetable kingdom in which Patrick Chamoiseau sets his Biblique des derniers gestes and the way the narrative is being played out. The mangrove, with its entangled roots and stems, constitutes a perfect image of the novel, whose multiple branches are no longer anchored in any reality or in a centralised system, but seem moved by a principle which we could call “bibliotropic”, since in Biblique one could easily find traces of Perse, García Márquez, Glissant, Césaire and even of Rabelais. But certain “stems” are more difficult to track within this dense …

The Glycine And Proline Reductase Systems: An Evolutionary Perspective And Presence In Enterobacteriaceae, Joshua Witt Dec 2013

The Glycine And Proline Reductase Systems: An Evolutionary Perspective And Presence In Enterobacteriaceae, Joshua Witt

HIM 1990-2015

The Glycine and Proline Reduction systems are two of the best characterized selenoenzymes in bacteria and have been found to occur in a wide variety of clostridia [1-5]. These enzymes are utilized to reduce glycine or D-proline to obtain energy via substrate level phosporylation or membrane gradients, respectively [6, 7]. This includes the pathogens C. difficile and C. botulinum [5, 8]. Strains of C. difficile are activate toxigenic pathways whenever either of these pathways is active within the cell [5, 8]. Though evolutionary studies have been conducted on ammonia producing bacteria [9] none has been done to directly characterize these …
