Freely Flowing: Openly Accessible Sources For Streaming Video, Deg Farrelly
Freely Flowing: Openly Accessible Sources For Streaming Video, Deg Farrelly
Charleston Library Conference
There is considerable disagreement within the academic and library spheres as to what can be done to make streaming content available. The process of providing streaming content is expensive, labor intensive, and time consuming. This process, however, doesn’t always require prolonged licensing negotiations, expenditure of precious materials budgets, or large investment of personnel time and effort to digitize, upload, and maintain content. There are many websites that provide quality videos that libraries and media centers can both access and provide access to with minimal effort. This paper offers a list of these legal, openly accessible resources, along with a brief …

Hyde Park Debate: The Traditional Research Library Is Dead, Rick Anderson, Derek Law
Charleston Library Conference
This presentation offers a debate on the proposition, “The traditional research library is dead.” Rick Anderson argues for the proposition, and Derek Law argues against it. The debate is conducted in general accordance with Oxford Union rules. All in the audience vote their opinion on the resolution before the debate begins, and the vote totals are recorded. Each speaker offers a formal opening statement, followed by a response to each other's statements, and then the floor is opened for discussion. At the conclusion of the debate, another vote is taken. The winner of the debate is the one who caused …

Changing Operations Of Academic Libraries, Allen Mckiel, Robert Murdoch, Jim Dooley
Charleston Library Conference
The article is an exploration of library operational adaptations to the changing technologies of information distribution and usage. The librarians present glimpses of the changes occurring in their library operations as they transition to services without print. The cadence of change particularly with respect to e-books continues to accelerate. The librarians summarize some of the technology changes of the last year and explore, through the evidence of their changing library operations, a range of topics including: trends in ebook “acquisition” and usage; developments in open access publishing; changes in consortia; and the role of librarians in instruction and evolving peer-review …
Journals And Supplementary Data, Betty Landesman
Journals And Supplementary Data, Betty Landesman
Charleston Library Conference
Supplementary materials provide further information, explanation, or details that complement an article. These materials can include tables, figures, multimedia, and data. There is a growing interest in supplying these materials with an author’s work as possible storage is created for them. This paper discusses supplementary data as it applies to journals. It provides some examples of publishers’ policies regarding supplementary materials and what issues may surface with such policies. Changes in these policies are also discussed to portray the ways in which publishers are adapting to this growing interest in supplementary data. Data citation and storage, such as archiving in …

Going Native, Caitlin Mcguire
Going Native, Caitlin Mcguire
Booth
Tammy was tired of theory and wanted to sleep with an Indian. A card-carrying, reservation-born Native American with a drinking problem and a ninth-grade education. Since Michael had decided that long distance wouldn't work out, the thought had become the focus of nightly episodes in which she swayed in the center of Ponderosa's pine-paneled bar to the ghost of Hang Williams and Patsy Cline. She imagined being interrupted by a warrior, like Uncas from Last of the Mohicans or Abel from House Made of Dawn. They'd drink too much, the way they drank in the movies. He'd take her …

Movement And Habitat Use Of The Snapping Turtle In An Urban Landscape, Travis J. Ryan, William A. Peterman, Jessica D. Stephens, Sean C. Sterrett
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
In order to effectively manage urban habitats, it is important to incorporate the spatial ecology and habitat use of the species utilizing them. Our previous studies have shown that the distribution of upland habitats surrounding a highly urbanized wetland habitat, the Central Canal (Indianapolis, IN, USA) influences the distribution of map turtles (Graptemys geographica) and red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta) during both the active season and hibernation. In this study we detail the movements and habitat use of another prominent member of the Central Canal turtle assemblage, the common snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina. We find the same …

Her Dark Materials: Conjuring The Feminine Imaginary In Practice, K Parker
Her Dark Materials: Conjuring The Feminine Imaginary In Practice, K Parker
School of Art, Design and Architecture
My paper explores film-making ‘as (a) woman’, an audiovisual form of écriture féminine, a term used by Hélène Cixous and others to denote ‘feminine writing’, the transformative practices that come through the body, with reference to Maya Deren’s theorisation of cinema and her ethnographic study of Haitian voodoo belief systems. In creative practice, I take the feminine position through an embodied layering of consciousness, entering a trance or dream state, which for Freud was, "the threshold between life and death ... a space of uncertainty in which boundaries blur between rational and the supernatural, the animate and the inanimate" (Mulvey, …

This essay will explore questions related to the role of the supernatural in relation to Navajo identity, the role of magic realism within Navajo storytelling and discuss my approach to Dramatic Writing. I will analyze my play Fadeaway, a Navajo love tragedy that focuses on domestic violence, taboos and witchcraft within the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation is located in the Northwest corner of New Mexico spilling across the state lines of Colorado, Utah and taking up one-fourth of Arizona. The outskirts of the Navajo Nation are known as the "checkerboard area", patches of land are owned by State Government …
