Corticosterone Acts In The Nucleus Accumbens To Enhance Dopamine Signaling And Potentiate Reinstatement Of Cocaine Seeking, Evan N. Graf, Robert A. Wheeler, David A. Baker, Amanda L. Ebben, Jonathan E. Hill, Jayme R. Mcreynolds, Mykel A. Robble, Daniel S. Wheeler, John Mantsch, Paul J. Gasser

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Stressful life events are important contributors to relapse in recovering cocaine addicts, but the mechanisms by which they influence motivational systems are poorly understood. Studies suggest that stress may “set the stage” for relapse by increasing the sensitivity of brain reward circuits to drug-associated stimuli. We examined the effects of stress and corticosterone on behavioral and neurochemical responses of rats to a cocaine prime after cocaine self-administration and extinction. Exposure of rats to acute electric footshock stress did not by itself reinstate drug-seeking behavior but potentiated reinstatement in response to a subthreshold dose of cocaine. This effect of stress was …

Influence Of Porcine Dermal Fibers And Plla Fibers On Properties Of A Commercially-Available Injectable Bone Graft Substitute, Nathan Richard Thomas Jul 2013

Influence Of Porcine Dermal Fibers And Plla Fibers On Properties Of A Commercially-Available Injectable Bone Graft Substitute, Nathan Richard Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

An ideal bone graft substitute (BGS) does not exist. To obtain such a material, researchers are focussing on improving its mechanical properties while not adversely affecting other properties. BGSs in current use have low toughness and low flexural strength. The focus of the present study was to determine the influence of two types of fiber (xenograft (porcine) and poly-L-lactide (PLLA)) on toughness and flexural strength as well as other mechanical properties, setting time, injectability and cytocompatibility of PRO-DENSE(R), commercially-available injectable BGS. The addition of each fiber type led to a significant increase in toughness (3X and 10X with porcine dermal …

Automated And Real Time Subtle Facial Feature Tracker For Automatic Emotion Elicitation, Ahmad Ridwan Ibn Sarwar Jul 2013

Automated And Real Time Subtle Facial Feature Tracker For Automatic Emotion Elicitation, Ahmad Ridwan Ibn Sarwar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis proposed a system for real time detection of facial expressions those are subtle and are exhibited in spontaneous real world settings. The underlying frame work of our system is the open source implementation of Active Appearance Model. Our algorithm operates by grouping the various points provided by AAM into higher level regions constructing and updating a background statistical model of movement in each region, and testing whether current movement in a given region substantially exceeds the expected value of movement in that region (computed from statistical model). Movements that exceed the expected value by some threshold and do …

Orbital, Superhump And Superorbital Periods In The Cataclysmic Variables Aq Mensae And Im Eridani, E. Armstrong, J. Patterson, E. Michelsen, John Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report photometric detections of orbital and superorbital signals, and negative orbital sidebands, in the light curves of the nova-like cataclysmic variables AQ Mensae and IM Eridani. The frequencies of the orbital, superorbital, and sideband signals are 7.0686 (3), 0.263 (3), and 7.332 (3) cycles per day (c/d) in AQ Mensae, and 6.870 (1), 0.354 (7), and 7.226 (1) c/d in IM Eridani. We also find a spectroscopic orbital frequency in IM Eridani of 6.86649 (2) c/d. These observations can be reproduced by invoking an accretion disc that is tilted with respect to the orbital plane. This model works well …

Agile Thinking In Motion Graphics Practice And Its Potential For Design Education, Jonathan Hamilton Jul 2013

Agile Thinking In Motion Graphics Practice And Its Potential For Design Education, Jonathan Hamilton

Learn X Design Conference Series

Motion Graphics is relatively new subject and its methodologies are still being developed. There are useful lessons to be learnt from the practice in early cinema from the 1890's to the 1930's where Agile thinking was used by a number of practitioners including Fritz Lang. Recent studies in MA Motion Graphics have accessed some of this thinking incorporating them in a series of Motion Graphic tests and experiments culminating in a two minute animation “1896 Olympic Marathon”. This paper demonstrates how the project and its design methodology can contribute new knowledge for the practice and teaching of this relatively new …

Real-Time Bioacoustics Monitoring And Automated Species Identification, T. Mitchell Aide, Carlos Corrada-Bravo, Marconi Campos-Cerqueira, Carlos Milan, Giovany Vega, Rafael Alvarez

Bioacoustics Collection

Traditionally, animal species diversity and abundance is assessed using a variety of methods that are generally costly, limited in space and time, and most importantly, they rarely include a permanent record. Given the urgency of climate change and the loss of habitat, it is vital that we use new technologies to improve and expand global biodiversity monitoring to thousands of sites around the world. In this article, we describe the acoustical component of the Automated Remote Biodiversity Monitoring Network (ARBIMON), a novel combination of hardware and software for automating data acquisition, data management, and species identification based on audio recordings. …

Analysis Of Humira, Electro-Acupuncture, And Pulsatile Dry Cupping On Reducing Joint Inflammation In Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Natalie Noll Jul 2013

Analysis Of Humira, Electro-Acupuncture, And Pulsatile Dry Cupping On Reducing Joint Inflammation In Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Natalie Noll

UROP Posters

Humira, an anti-TNF drug aimed at decreasing inflammation in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients, can cause skin diseases from a rash to skin cancer. Humira works by blocking the chemical receptor RANKL, which therefore halts the production of osteoclasts, which attack and eat bone and cartilage, causing inflammation in arthritis patient’s joints. By analyzing Humira’s effect on the human body, it can be compared against other treatments such as electro-acupuncture and pulsatile dry cupping to see if these alternative treatments can decrease inflammation in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients through blocking RANKL, and if they are safer methods for carrying out this treatment. Under …

Stray Dogs Cause Health Risks In Thailand, Kadie Brigham

UROP Posters

Around 120,000 stray dogs are currently roaming the streets of Thailand compared to the 67,000,000 people that currently live there. Although the stray dog population doesn't outnumber the human population, it still should be a concern of the Thai government because stray dogs have shown aggression towards people and, carry diseases and rabies that could be transferred to people causing them serious ailments. Chantapong Wasi and colleagues from the Medicine Siriraj Hospital at Mahidol Universty in Thailand estimate that within the stray dog population only about 20% of the dogs are vaccinated or sterilized. My research explores what type of …

Maternal Exposure To Combustion Generated Pm Inhibits Pulmonary Th1 Maturation And Concomitantly Enhances Postnatal Asthma Development In Offspring, Pingli Wang, Dahui You, Jordy Saravia, Huahao Shen, Stephania A. Cormier

Faculty Publications

Background: Epidemiological studies suggest that maternal exposure to environmental hazards, such as particulate matter, is associated with increased incidence of asthma in childhood. We hypothesized that maternal exposure to combustion derived ultrafine particles containing persistent free radicals (MCP230) disrupts the development of the infant immune system and results in aberrant immune responses to allergens and enhances asthma severity. Methods: Pregnant C57/BL6 mice received MCP230 or saline by oropharyngeal aspiration on gestational days 10 and 17. Three days after the second administration, blood was collected from MCP230 or saline treated dams and 8-isoprostanes in the serum were measured to assess maternal oxidative …

Down's Syndrome, Neroinflammation, And Alzheimer Neuropathogenesis, Donna M. Wilcock, W. Sue T. Griffin Jul 2013

Down's Syndrome, Neroinflammation, And Alzheimer Neuropathogenesis, Donna M. Wilcock, W. Sue T. Griffin

Physiology Faculty Publications

Down syndrome (DS) is the result of triplication of chromosome 21 (trisomy 21) and is the prevailing cause of mental retardation. In addition to the mental deficiencies and physical anomalies noted at birth, triplication of chromosome 21 gene products results in the neuropathological and cognitive changes of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Mapping of the gene that encodes the precursor protein (APP) of the β-amyloid (Aβ) present in the Aβ plaques in both AD and DS to chromosome 21 was strong evidence that this chromosome 21 gene product was a principal neuropathogenic culprit in AD as well as DS. The discovery of …

An Mll-Dependent Network Sustains Hematopoiesis, Erika L. Artinger, Bibhu P. Mishra, Kristin M. Zaffuto, Bin E. Li, Elaine K. Y. Chung, Adrian W. Moore, Yufei Chen, Chao Cheng, Patricia Ernst Jul 2013

An Mll-Dependent Network Sustains Hematopoiesis, Erika L. Artinger, Bibhu P. Mishra, Kristin M. Zaffuto, Bin E. Li, Elaine K. Y. Chung, Adrian W. Moore, Yufei Chen, Chao Cheng, Patricia Ernst

Dartmouth Scholarship

The histone methyltransferase Mixed Lineage Leukemia (MLL) is essential to maintain hematopoietic stem cells and is a leukemia protooncogene. Although clustered homeobox genes are well-characterized targets of MLL and MLL fusion oncoproteins, the range of Mll-regulated genes in normal hematopoietic cells remains unknown. Here, we identify and characterize part of the Mll-dependent transcriptional network in hematopoietic stem cells with an integrated approach by using conditional loss-of-function models, genomewide expression analyses, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and functional rescue assays. The Mll-dependent transcriptional network extends well beyond the previously appreciated Hox targets, is comprised of many characterized regulators of self-renewal, and contains target genes …

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

Social experiences realized through teleconferencing systems are still quite different from face to face meetings. The awareness that we are online and in a, to some extent, lesser real world are preventing us from really engaging and enjoying the event. Several reasons account for these differences and have been identified. We think it is now time to bridge these gaps and propose inspiring and innovative solutions in order to provide realistic, believable and engaging online experiences. We present a distributed and scalable framework named REVERIE that faces these challenges and provides a mix of these solutions. Applications built on top …

Mythcon 44 - Green And Growing: The Land And Its Inhabitants In Fantasy, The Mythopoeic Society Jul 2013

Mythcon 44 - Green And Growing: The Land And Its Inhabitants In Fantasy, The Mythopoeic Society

Mythcon Programs

How does mythopoeic literature address the relationship between the land and its inhabitants, between the wild and the cultivated? What are their respective moral values, their dangers, and delights? Tangled forests, majestic trees, the ordered fields, the carefully tended gardens; or untamed, wild beauty: each offers a different kind of bounty to those who would live off the land. What role do advocates and protectors of the land play in fantasy literature, particularly as personified in characters such as Yavanna, Radagast, Sam Gamgee, and, of course, Tom Bombadil?

Spatial Patterns Of Mobile Regolith Thickness And Meteoric 10be In Gordon Gulch, Front Range, Co, Neil Shea

Master's Theses

The Boulder Creek Critical Zone Observatory (BcCZO) aims to understand the history, architecture, and evolution of hillslopes found within the diverse topography and climate regimes of the Colorado Front Range. Here, I present the results of a systematic study that documents spatial patterns of mobile regolith thickness and uses concentrations of meteoric 10Be to assess the mechanisms and time scales of sediment transport and storage in Gordon Gulch, a mid-elevation watershed representative of topography throughout the region. Gordon Gulch lies within the unglaciated portion of the Front Range and is hypothesized to be in long-term steady state evolution. This …

Individual And Population Level Resource Selection Patterns Of Mountain Lions Preying On Mule Deer Along An Urban-Wildland Gradient, John F. Benson, Jeff A. Sikich, Seth P. D. Riley

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Understanding population and individual-level behavioral responses of large carnivores to human disturbance is important for conserving top predators in fragmented landscapes. However, previous research has not investigated resource selection at predation sites of mountain lions in highly urbanized areas. We quantified selection of natural and anthropogenic landscape features by mountain lions at sites where they consumed their primary prey, mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), in and adjacent to urban, suburban, and rural areas in greater Los Angeles. We documented intersexual and individual-level variation in the environmental conditions present at mule deer feeding sites relative to their availability across home …
