A Methodology For Designing Airports For Enhanced Security Using Simulation, Oliver Nwofia, Christopher A. Chung

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

With the advent of the new security measures, today’s airports have become increasingly complex and congested. Air and passenger traffic continues to increase; consequently, the need for intelligent design concepts is required. Unlike all other existing airport designs that focused exclusively on operational performance, this study focused on the development of a new airport terminal design methodology that takes a proactive approach to minimizing the effects of security disruptions while simultaneously maximizing operational performance and passenger flow. The study addressed the impact of security operations on both the design of airport facilities and passenger flows, and discussed options and scenarios …

Oc Washing And Checking: Examining The Selective Impairments In Evolved Disease Avoidance And Safety Management Mechanisms, Alison G. Aylward Jul 2013

Oc Washing And Checking: Examining The Selective Impairments In Evolved Disease Avoidance And Safety Management Mechanisms, Alison G. Aylward

Open Access Dissertations

Three studies were conducted to examine the possibility that the expression of obsessive-compulsive (OC) washing and checking symptoms reflect impairments in cognitive mechanisms underlying adaptations for disease avoidance and physical harm avoidance, respectively. Studies provided initial evidence that specialized attention, memory and reasoning processes exist depending on whether adaptations for disease avoidance or physical harm avoidance are activated. The data provided no support for the hypothesis that individuals expressing OC contamination and physical harm concerns evince concern-related attention, memory, and reasoning biases.

Objectives: Cognitive impairment remains frequent in HIV, despite combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). Leading theories implicate peripheral monocyte HIV DNA reservoirs as a mechanism for spread of the virus to the brain. These reservoirs remain present despite cART. The objective of this study was to determine if the level of HIV DNA in CD14+ enriched monocytes predicted cognitive impairment and brain injury. Methods: We enrolled 61 cART-naı¨ve HIV-infected Thais in a prospective study and measured HIV DNA in CD14+ enriched monocyte samples in a blinded fashion. We determined HAND diagnoses by consensus panel and all participants underwent magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to …

Counseling Religious African Americans: Implications For A Social Justice Model Of Intervention, Rachelle Delorse Smith Jul 2013

Counseling Religious African Americans: Implications For A Social Justice Model Of Intervention, Rachelle Delorse Smith

Dissertations

Due to a complex history of unethical societal and medical practices towards African Americans from U.S. institutions such as the U.S. Public Health Services and Johns Hopkins Hospital, a consistent lack of collaborative relationships between the African American religious community and the professional counseling community has emerged. Thus, some religious African Americans who may have needed counseling services did not receive them, as Black churches commonly dismiss the relevancy and necessity of professional counseling. The purpose of this theory-building study was to examine the perceptions that lead to such dismissals and, inspired by action research approaches, derive the best methods …

Profile Of Vismodegib And Its Potential In The Treatment Of Advanced Basal Cell Carcinoma., Muzafar A. Macha, Surinder K. Batra, Apar Kishor Ganti

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human malignancy. Recent advances in our understanding of the critical biologic pathways implicated in the development and progression of BCC have led to the development of the first molecular targeted therapy for this disease. The hedgehog pathway is mutated in virtually all patients with BCC and recent trials with vismodegib, an inhibitor of this pathway, have shown significant responses. This review will discuss the importance of the hedgehog pathway in the pathogenesis of BCC and describe in detail the pharmacology of vismodegib in relation to its activity in advanced BCC.

Individual Differences On Multi-Scale Measures Of Executive Function, Jason Anastas Jul 2013

Individual Differences On Multi-Scale Measures Of Executive Function, Jason Anastas

Doctoral Dissertations

Cognitive control is a central issue in developmental psychology. Traditional theories of psychology solve this problem by positing a top-down central executive, which coordinates cognitive resources in pursuit of goals. We propose an alternative explanation: cognitive control arises from physical interactions across many different timescales within the system. We examined whether measures of individual differences of these multi-scale interactions could predict individual differences in executive function development. Preschool-aged participants were asked to complete a series of executive function tasks while we tracked the motion of their dominant hand. We found that multi-scale interactions differed depending on experimental constraints. We also …

Formation Of Cell Masses In The Myelencephalon Of The Clawed Frog, Xenopus Muelleri, Flora Stephano

Tanzania Journal of Science

An important process in the organization of developing nervous system is the clustering of neurons with similar properties to form nuclei. The development of myelencephalon of Xenopus muelleri, a pipid frog that retains a lateral line system throughout life, was studied in Nissl stained serial sections. The results showed that density of neurons increases as the animal develops. Cell masses were formed in the latter half of larval stages (stage 48 to 59). Large neurons migrate first before small neurons. Raphes and reticular formation nuclei and Mauthner cells were the earliest neurons that could be distinctly recognized on the ventral …

The Effects Of Nursery Habitat Loss On Juvenile Lemon Sharks, Negaprion Brevirostris, Kristine L. Stump

Open Access Dissertations

The lemon shark, Negaprion brevirostris, is a large coastal elasmobranch that relies on shallow nearshore nursery areas for increased juvenile survival throughout its range. Habitat loss due to anthropogenic development has occurred globally at large scales, particularly in the coastal zone. In Bimini, Bahamas, where lemon sharks use mangrove-fringed lagoons and creeks as nurseries, the construction of a large resort and marina complex has altered the natural environment through mangrove removal, seabed dredging and the filling of wetlands. The Bimini system is one of the most well-studied in all elasmobranch literature. Given the wealth of pre-disturbance data, this study was …

Zinc is an essential mineral for humans and plants and is involved in many physiological and biochemical processes. In humans, Zn deficiency has been associated with retarded growth and reduction of immune response. In plants, Zn is an essential component of more than 300 enzymes including RNA polymerase, alkaline phosphatase, alcohol dehydrogenase, Cu/Zn superoxidase dismutase, and carbonic anhydrase. The accumulation of Zn in plants involves many genes and characterization of the role of these genes will be useful in biofortification. Here we report the identification and phlyogenetic and sequence characterization of the 23 members of the ZIP (ZRT, IRT like …

Combination Of Sirna-Directed Gene Silencing With Cisplatin Reverses Drug Resistance In Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Shanthi Ganesh, Arun K. Iyer, Jan Weller, David V. Morrissey, Mansoor M. Amiji Jul 2013

Combination Of Sirna-Directed Gene Silencing With Cisplatin Reverses Drug Resistance In Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Shanthi Ganesh, Arun K. Iyer, Jan Weller, David V. Morrissey, Mansoor M. Amiji

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

One of the most challenging aspects of lung cancer therapy is the rapid acquisition of multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotype. One effective approach would be to identify and downregulate resistance-causing genes in tumors using small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) to increase the sensitivity of tumor cells to chemotherapeutic challenge. After identifying the overexpressed resistance-related antiapoptotic genes (survivin and bcl-2) in cisplatin-resistant cells, the siRNA sequences were designed and screened to select the most efficacious candidates. Modifications were introduced in them to minimize off-target effects. Subsequently, the combination of siRNA and cisplatin that gave the maximum synergy was identified in resistant cells. We then …

Dopamine (DA) and other neurotransmitters affect nonneuronal tissues in insects by circulating in the hemolymph. In several organisms, DA has been shown to modulate distinct aspects of cardiac function but the signal transduction pathways that mediate dopaminergic effects on the heart are not well characterized. Here, we used a semiintact Drosophila melanogaster larva preparation and drugs targeting DA receptors and canonical second messenger pathways to identify signaling cascades that mediate the effect of DA on a myogenic heart. DA has a positive chronotropic effect that is mimicked by SKF38393 (type‐1 DA receptor agonist) and quinpirole (type‐2 DA receptor agonist). SCH23390 …

Trading Mechanisms, Return’S Volatility, And Efficiency In The Casablance Stock Exchange, El Mehdi Ferrouhi, Elhadj Ezzahid

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This paper studies the impact of the stock market continuity on the returns volatility and on the market efficiency in the Casablanca Stock Exchange. For the most active stocks, the trading mechanism used is the continuous market which is preceded by a call market pre opening session. Results obtained concerning return volatility and efficiency under the two trading mechanisms show that the continuous market returns are more volatile than the call market returns and 50% of stocks studied show independence between variations.

Dexamethasone Rapidly Increases Gaba Release In The Dorsal Motor Nucleus Of The Vagus Via Retrograde Messenger-Mediated Enhancement Of Trpv1 Activity, Andrei V. Derbenev, Bret N. Smith

Physiology Faculty Publications

Glucocorticoids influence vagal parasympathetic output to the viscera via mechanisms that include modulation of neural circuitry in the dorsal vagal complex, a principal autonomic regulatory center. Glucocorticoids can modulate synaptic neurotransmitter release elsewhere in the brain by inducing release of retrograde signalling molecules. We tested the hypothesis that the glucocorticoid agonist dexamethasone (DEX) modulates GABA release in the rat dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV). Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings revealed that DEX (1-10 µM) rapidly (i.e. within three minutes) increased the frequency of tetrodotoxin-resistant, miniature IPSCs (mIPSCs) in 67% of DMV neurons recorded in acutely prepared slices. Glutamate-mediated mEPSCs were …

A Novel Biorelevant In Vitro System To Predict The In Vivo Performance Of Oral Transmucosal Products, Poonam Delvadia Jul 2013

A Novel Biorelevant In Vitro System To Predict The In Vivo Performance Of Oral Transmucosal Products, Poonam Delvadia

Theses and Dissertations

In vitro dissolution, release and permeation testing is a common practice during drug product research and development. These in vitro tests, if predictive, are referred to as biorelevant tests and can play diverse roles to facilitate and expedite product development in a cost effective manner. Oral transmucosal products (OTPs) are currently tested using compendial and modified in vitro tests which may or may not be good predictors of in vivo performance due to a lack of biorelevance. A critical need for a broadly applicable and biorelevant in vitro system for OTPs has been expressed in the literature and the goal …

Cellular Simultanous Recurrent Networks For Image Processing, John Keith Anderson Jul 2013

Cellular Simultanous Recurrent Networks For Image Processing, John Keith Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Artificial neural networks are inspired by the abilities of humans and animals to learn and adapt. Feed-forward networks are both fast and powerful, and are particularly useful for statistical pattern recognition. These networks are inspired by portions of the brain such as the visual cortex. However, feed-forward networks have been shown inadequate for complex applications such as long-term optimization, reinforced learning and image processing. Cellular Neural Networks (CNNs) are a type of recurrent network which have been used extensively for image processing. CNNs have shown limited success solving problems which involve topological relationships. Such problems include geometric transformations such as …

Adjudicating Sex Crimes As Mental Disease, Melissa Hamilton

Pace Law Review

The psychiatric diseases of the paraphilias are now entrenched in the law in decisions concerning culpability, desert, and risk. Though, as the foregoing cases suggest, it is a tough balancing act, considering the existence of psychiatric illness suggests less responsibility, while at the same time implying a greater risk of future dangerousness. To better navigate this conundrum, the law has drawn on the psychiatric sciences. Part II of this Article outlines a basic need for law and science to serve each other even though they may not share objectives. With respect to the advent of new laws to control sex …

2009 Pandemic Influenza A(H1n1): Secondary Transmission And Maternal/Neonatal Outcomes, Timothy J. Doyle Jul 2013

2009 Pandemic Influenza A(H1n1): Secondary Transmission And Maternal/Neonatal Outcomes, Timothy J. Doyle

Open Access Dissertations

Influenza pandemics occur at unpredictable intervals and can cause significant illness and death, as well as disruptions to society. With each new influenza pandemic there is a need to understand basic parameters of the virus and illness to facilitate the public health response. These parameters relate, among others, to the transmission dynamics of the new virus, such as secondary attack rate and serial interval; risk factors for infection, severe illness, and death; and efficacy of existing diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic measures applied to the new pandemic virus. In 2009, a global influenza pandemic occurred, more than 40 years following the …

A Legume Biofortification Quandary: Variability And Genetic Control Of Seed Coat Micronutrient Accumulation In Common Beans, Matthew W. Blair, Paulo Izquierdo, Carolina Astudillo, Michael A. Grusak

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), like many legumes, are rich in iron, zinc, and certain other microelements that are generally found to be in low concentrations in cereals, other seed crops, and root or tubers and therefore are good candidates for biofortification. But a quandary exists in common bean biofortification: namely that the distribution of iron has been found to be variable between the principal parts of seed; namely the cotyledonary tissue, embryo axis and seed coat. The seed coat represents ten or more percent of the seed weight and must be considered specifically as it accumulates much of …
