A Multiplex Real-Time Pcr Assay For Rapid Detection And Differentiation Of Burkholderia Mallei, B. Pseudomallei, And B. Thailandensis, Chinn-Woan Shih, Richard Robison

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As stated in the proposal, my focus has been with three bacterial species of Burkholderia: mallei, pseudomallei, and thailandensis. Burkholderia mallei is the causative agent of glanders, an abscess-forming infection that is predominantly found in the equine population and is capable of being transmitted to humans from infected animals. There is documentation that B. mallei was used as a biowarfare agent in World War I (Gee et al., 2003).

Genetic Investigation Of The Pathology Of Ustilago Bullata, Erin Ladle, Dr. Jeff Maughan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Bromus tectorum L., commonly known as cheatgrass, is an invasive annual grass species that dominates millions of hectares of land in the Great Basin area, in the western United States.1 The widespread invasion of cheatgrass has increased fire incidence in some areas of the Great Basin from every 30-100 years to every 5 years. Moreover, once cheatgrass becomes the dominant vegetative species, it monopolizes resources, significantly contributing to the endangerment of many native plant species.

Agency At Hacienda Pancota: Early Colonial Daily Consumption Of A Contested Age And Material Culture, Collin Roderick Gillenwater

Theses and Dissertations

The artifact assemblage of indigenous, imported, and contraband material goods at use in the Izalcos region of western El Salvador's early colonial period were analyzed to determine material agency. The archaeological remains of a specific hacienda and its residents' daily consumption were analyzed spatially and typologically. The resulting data concluded in the interpretation of Hacienda Pancota residents' adapting their lives with remarkable versatility during Spanish occupation. Specialization of place becomes more heavily emphasized with the incorporation of European goods, an important factor defining agency at Hacienda Pancota.

Using Participatory Action Research And Photo Methods To Explore Higher Education Administration As An Emotional Endeavor, Leslie D. Gonzales, Rodolfo Rincones Aug 2013

Using Participatory Action Research And Photo Methods To Explore Higher Education Administration As An Emotional Endeavor, Leslie D. Gonzales, Rodolfo Rincones

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, we build on Wood’s (2010, 2012) recent call to consider higher education as a work place that conjures emotion among constituents, particularly positional leaders, like department chairs. Using a participatory action research and photo - enhanced methodological approach, we illustrate the emotional labor that was poured into the work of one department chair. Consequently, our work yields three contributions. First, we counter the overly rationalistic depiction of organizational leadership research and thinking. Second, our work suggests that if we conceptualize and understand emotion and emotional labor as a form of labor compelled by organizational norms, rule s, …

Digital Gardens With Real Toads In Them: The Place Of Heritage Media In A Digital Art And Design Education, Iain Macdonald

Learn X Design Conference Series

At a time when digital media is regarded as orthodoxy in education, in advanced global economies there is a pressing argument to review the lessons of the past and reflect on whether they are still applicable. This paper will enquire into today’s issues with digital practices in art and design education using relevant, historical examples from the main changes in approach of the last century. It will also explain how the changes of approach to art and design education has affected the choice of materials, the stress on different skills and the values of different creative arts within the subject. …

The Effect Of Robot-Child Interactions On Social Attention And Verbalization Patterns Of Typically Developing Children And Children With Autism Between 4 And 8 Years, Sudha Srinivasan, Anjana Bhat

Open Access Author Fund Awardees' Articles

Background: There is anecdotal evidence for the use of robots to facilitate prosocial behaviors such as joint attention and verbalization in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). However, there have been no normative data in typically developing children to evaluate the effects of robot-child interactions on social and communication skills. Objectives: The aim of our study was to evaluate the changes in social attention and verbalization skills of 15 typically developing (TD) children, using a structured 8-session imitation protocol within a robot-adult-child context. We further extended this imitation protocol to two children with ASDs. Methods: Pretest, session1, session 4, session …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Accumulation of β-amyloid peptides is an important hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Tremendous efforts have been directed to elucidate the mechanisms of β-amyloid peptides degradation and develop strategies to remove β-amyloid accumulation. In this study, we demonstrated that a subpopulation of oligodendroglial precursor cells, also called NG2 cells, were a new cell type that can clear β-amyloid peptides in the AD transgene mice and in NG2 cell line.

RESULTS: NG2 cells were recruited and clustered around the amyloid plaque in the APPswe/PS1dE9 mice, which is Alzheimer's disease mouse model. In vitro, NG2 cell line and primary NG2 cells engulfed …

It has long been recognized that elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CHD) and that pharmacologic therapy to decrease LDL-C significantly reduces cardiovascular events. Despite the effectiveness of statins for CHD risk reduction, even optimal LDL-lowering therapy alone fails to avert 60% to 70% of CHD cases. A low plasma concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is also associated with increased risk of CHD. However, the convincing epidemiologic data linking HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) to CHD risk in an inverse correlation has not yet translated into clinical trial evidence supporting linearity between HDL-C increases …

The Relationship Of Temporal Discounting And Working Alliance To Substance Abuse Treatment Process In Hispanic Adolescents, James John Weidel Aug 2013

The Relationship Of Temporal Discounting And Working Alliance To Substance Abuse Treatment Process In Hispanic Adolescents, James John Weidel

Open Access Dissertations

The association between impulsivity and substance abuse has important implications in the clinical substance abuse treatment field. Adolescents who are characteristically more impulsive by nature of their developmental may be more at risk for treatment failure. The inclination by which individuals devalue future rewards in favor of more immediate rewards with lower monetary values is a type of impulsivity that has received much attention in the substance abuse research field. Identified as temporal discounting (TD) or delay discounting, this phenomenon is not only a factor that influences substance abuse, but also may be a factor that leads to failure in …

Secondhand Blues, Dennis Michael Davis Aug 2013

Secondhand Blues, Dennis Michael Davis

Theses

“Secondhand Blues” is the first part of a novel-in-progress of the same title. It is a work of realist fiction that tells the story of an aspiring rock & roll artist, exploring the nature of ambition and how it affects (and is affected by) personal relationships. It also seeks to depict the world as it exists on the fringes of fame and success through the eyes of several different characters whose talents and ambitions have led them to take up residence there. “Stealing Home” is a coming-of-age story that explores the sometimes elusive concepts of home and family through the …

Assessing The Reliability Of Stable Isotopes In Fossil Bone: A Unique Case Study Of Prehistoric Lung Pathology., Kathleen Bundy, Samuel D. Matson

Student Research Initiative

Mammals at Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park (NE Nebraska) offer a unique opportunity to test for the preservation of primary isotopic signatures in fossilized materials. At this site, large herbivores such as rhinoceroses, horses and camels are buried in volcanic ash sourced from an eruption of the Bruneau-Jarbridge caldera (Idaho/Nevada) ca. 11.8 million years ago. Most fossils from Ashfall display pathologic bone symptomatic of a lung disease (hypertrophic osteopathy or HPOA) likely related to inhalation of volcanic ash. In this study, we compare the stable oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O) of pathologic bone with that of normal cortical …

Novel Behavioral Markers In The Ppt1-/- Mouse Model Of Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, Joshua Thomas Dearborn

Dissertations

Infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (INCL) is a lysosomal storage disease that is debilitating and fatal to children before their teenage years. The palmitoyl protein thioesterase 1 (PPT1) knockout (Ppt1-/-) mouse is an appropriate animal model that mimics much of the symptomology and brain pathology of the human disease. Ppt1-/- mice display blindness, seizures, and motor deficits and die well before wild-type mice. However, little is known about the cognitive and behavioral abilities of the Ppt1-/- mouse. This study was conducted to examine further the behavioral phenotype of the Ppt1-/- mouse model of INCL by evaluating the animals’ abilities in such …

Selenium’S Effect On Insulin Resistance, Scott Brunson, Chad Hancock Aug 2013

Selenium’S Effect On Insulin Resistance, Scott Brunson, Chad Hancock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Due to dramatic increases in type II diabetes, studies on insulin resistance are especially applicable to this current health issue. Previous epidemiological studies examining selenium’s effect on prostate cancer observed a possible correlation between increased risk for type II diabetes mellitus and increased selenium levels in humans (Lippman, S.M.2009). However, in other studies contradictory results have been recorded. Due to these inconsistencies we are investigating the effects of selenium on insulin resistance. If increased dietary selenium causes insulin resistance, we will examine the mechanism by which this occurs.

Crw1 - A Novel Maize Mutant Highly Susceptible To Foliar Damage By The Western Corn Rootworm Beetle., Bala Puchakayala Venkata, Nick Lauter, Xu Li, Clint Chapple Dr., Christian H. Krupke, Gurmukh Johal, Stephen Moose

Department of Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is the most destructive insect pest of corn (Zea mays L.) in the United States. The adult WCR beetles derive their nourishment from multiple sources including corn pollen and silks as well as the pollen of alternate hosts. Conversely, the corn foliage is largely neglected as a food source by WCR beetles, leading to a perception of a passive interaction between the two. We report here a novel recessive mutation of corn that was identified and named after its foliar susceptibility to corn rootworm beetles (crw1). The …

Osteopontin Expression During The Acute Immune Response Mediates Reactive Synaptogenesis And Adaptive Outcome, Julie Chan Aug 2013

Osteopontin Expression During The Acute Immune Response Mediates Reactive Synaptogenesis And Adaptive Outcome, Julie Chan

Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a worldwide epidemic as the number of victims living with the resulting cognitive and physical impairment continues to rise, principally due to limited treatment options which fail to address its multifaceted sequelae. By approaching TBI therapy from a molecular standpoint, we have the opportunity to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms which prevent effective recovery. With this information, we can move toward the identification of novel therapeutic treatments which target specific molecules to improve patient outcome following TBI. Here, we have focused on the therapeutic potential of osteopontin (OPN), an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein …

P53'S Choice Of Myocardial Death Or Survival: Oxygen Protects Infarct Myocardium By Recruiting P53 On Nos3 Promoter Through Regulation Of P53-Lys118 Acetylation, Rajan Gogna, Esha Madan, Mahmood Khan, Uttam Pati, Periannan Kuppusamy Aug 2013

P53'S Choice Of Myocardial Death Or Survival: Oxygen Protects Infarct Myocardium By Recruiting P53 On Nos3 Promoter Through Regulation Of P53-Lys118 Acetylation, Rajan Gogna, Esha Madan, Mahmood Khan, Uttam Pati, Periannan Kuppusamy

Dartmouth Scholarship

Myocardial infarction, an irreversible cardiac tissue damage, involves progressive loss of cardiomyocytes due to p53-mediated apoptosis. Oxygenation is known to promote cardiac survival through activation of NOS3 gene. We hypothesized a dual role for p53, which, depending on oxygenation, can elicit apoptotic death signals or NOS3-mediated survival signals in the infarct heart. p53 exhibited a differential DNA-binding, namely, BAX-p53RE in the infarct heart or NOS3-p53RE in the oxygenated heart, which was regulated by oxygen-induced, post- translational modification of p53. In the infarct heart, p53 was heavily acetylated at Lys118 residue, which was exclusively reversed in the oxygenated heart, apparently regulated …

National Geo-Graphics: The New "Federalism Function" Of American Tort Law, Riaz Tejani Aug 2013

National Geo-Graphics: The New "Federalism Function" Of American Tort Law, Riaz Tejani

San Diego Law Review

“Community” was once the wellspring of norms governing risk, harm, and compensation. Today, people, goods, and information move at such high speed across such wide distances that markets come to replace community as the measure of socially “reasonable” conduct. Alongside this rise of mass-market industrial and media actors, American tort law has experienced unprecedented influence of national rules upon once purely state common law doctrines. Thus far the shift has been only partial—through constitutional rights and federal preemption, it has impacted certain industries such as bioengineering but left untouched others such as medical care. Critics of this partial federalization espouse …

Unraveling The Mechanism Of 2,4-Dinitrofluorobenzene-Associated Cell Death, Franklin Thelmo Aug 2013

Unraveling The Mechanism Of 2,4-Dinitrofluorobenzene-Associated Cell Death, Franklin Thelmo

Summer Training Program in Cancer Immunotherapy

The mechanism by which the hapten 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP) mediates cell death is unclear according to current literature. To determine how DNP mediates death in the B16F10 murine melanoma cell line in vitro, cells were modified with 2,4-dinitro-1-fluorobenzene (DNFB). Following modification, cell lysates were collected and analyzed via Western blottings with known apoptotic or necrotic markers. Our results indicated that DNFB treated cells do not express the apoptotic marker Cleaved Caspase-3 and have no change in levels of the necrotic marker Cyclophilin A. We conclude that DNFB is not inducing apoptosis in B16F10 cells. Future research will further examine the …

Adoptive T Cell Therapy For Metastatic Colorectal Cancer, Shauna Ebanks Aug 2013

Adoptive T Cell Therapy For Metastatic Colorectal Cancer, Shauna Ebanks

Summer Training Program in Cancer Immunotherapy

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in US (1). Most of the mortality reflects local, regional and distant metastatic tumors. Cancers that are confined within the wall of the colon are often curable with surgery while tumor cells that have spread into other organs like liver and lung has low curable possibility, even though the chemotherapies and monoclonal antibodies can extend the person's life and improve quality of life(2, 3). Surgery is the main treatment for primary colorectal tumors but recurrence can happen and develop into metastasis. In addition, colorectal cancer …

Metabolomics Investigation Of Glyceollins By On-Line Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization Tandem Mass Spectrometry And Fungal Metabolite Identification By Thermal Desorption Analysis Coupled With Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Syeda Quadri

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Metabolomics is an emerging field that entails the detailed characterization of the ensemble of metabolites produced by living organisms; subfields include drug metabolism and natural environmental toxin production. The first part of the dissertation pursued metabolism of glyceollins, i.e., isoflavones produced by soybeans, that are potential cancer therapy agents. In vivo glyceollin metabolites produced in rats were investigated by on-line Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization Tandem Mass Spectrometry. An odd-electron fragment ion at m/z 148, formed in violation of the even-electron rule, and diagnostic of the glyceollin backbone, was discovered. Based on this finding, a negative mode precursor ion scanning method was …
