Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

Our understanding of the sources of Mycobacterium avium infection is partially based on genotypic matching of pathogen isolates from cases and environmental sources. These approaches assume that genotypic identity is rare in isolates from unlinked cases or sources. To test this assumption, a high-resolution PCR-based genotyping approach, large-sequence polymorphism (LSP)-mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit–variable-number tandem repeat (MIRU-VNTR), was selected and used to analyze clinical and environmental isolates of M. avium from geographically diverse sources. Among 127 clinical isolates from seven locations in North America, South America, and Europe, 42 genotypes were observed. Among 12 of these genotypes, matches were seen in …

Rice And Magic: A Cultural History From The Precolonial World To The Present, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr Sep 2013

Rice And Magic: A Cultural History From The Precolonial World To The Present, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr

History Department Faculty Publications

Beliefs in rice spirits were integral to the magical worldview of the precolonial inhabitants of the Philippine islands. Under Spanish colonialism, rice became a staple but it underwent disenchantment and symbolic marginality. By the 1870s rice production fell short relative to demand. Twentieth-century initiatives to address persistent shortages culminated in the 1960s Green Revolution, which further altered the rice plant and ushered in the age of practicality. Because rice production cannot be fully controlled, farmers still deploy culturally meaningful strategies to deal with uncertainties. The old meanings of rice for commensality have also proven resilient and reveal peculiarly Filipino ways.

Thiol-Based Ligand Exchange Reactions On Pbs Nanoparticles For Solar Energy Conversion, Andrew Schams, Jennifer Zemke Sep 2013

Thiol-Based Ligand Exchange Reactions On Pbs Nanoparticles For Solar Energy Conversion, Andrew Schams, Jennifer Zemke

Student Research and Creative Projects 2013-2014

Solar power is currently becoming a popular and viable source of energy in the world, but current photovoltaic cells have limitations that need to be overcome before becoming the main source of energy. A current objective is to produce cheap, efficient solar cells by incorporating highly absorbing semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs) into the solar cell medium. In order for the NPs to prove effective in a solar cell, we must understand and tune the surface ligands on the NPs to maximize charge carrier transfer into the solar cell medium. The goal of this research is to fully characterize multiple ligand-PbS nanoparticle …

Alzheimer's-Like Behavior And Pathology In A Transgenic Mouse Model Of Down Syndrome, Maria Noterman, Francis Mann, Richard Deyo

Student Research and Creative Projects 2013-2014

Down syndrome (DS) is caused by trisomy of human chromosome 21 (Hsa21) and is correlated with various comorbidities, including Alzheimer’s disease in 50% of affected individuals. The Tc1 mouse model contains a copy of Hsa21, producing an animal model of DS. In an effort to understand the correlation between DS and Alzheimer’s disease, this study compared the learning and memory abilities with hippocampal and cortical brain pathology in the Tc1 mouse model. Genotyping of Tc1 mice indicated that Hsa21 was transmitted with a 25.0% frequency. Tc1 mice underwent open field, dark-light, and step down test of inhibitory avoidance tests at …

Separate Is Inherently Unequal, Unless You're Religious: The Peculiar Constitutionalization Of Religious Segregation, Franciska Coleman Sep 2013

Separate Is Inherently Unequal, Unless You're Religious: The Peculiar Constitutionalization Of Religious Segregation, Franciska Coleman

Buffalo Public Interest Law Journal

This article seeks to explain how a relative newcomer to constitutional anti-discrimination jurisprudence, secular identity, has managed to gamer a far higher degree of protection than historically suspect classes, such as race and gender. It attributes this phenom- enon to the "separate but equal" model of equality inherent in the doctrine of "separation of church and state." It notes that, despite acknowledging that government segregation is per se unequal in the Brown decision, the Supreme Court has continued to enforce religious segregation as a requirement of the Establishment Clause. In doing so, the Court has created a new type of …

Similarity Approach To Defining Basic Level Of Concepts Explained From The Utility Viewpoint, Joe Lorkowski, Martin Trnecka

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, it is necessary to describe an image in words. From the purely logical viewpoint, to describe the same object, we can use concepts of different levels of abstraction: e.g., when the image includes a dog, we can say that it is a dog, or that it is a mammal, or that it is a German Shepherd. In such situations, humans usually select a concept which, to them, in the most natural; this concept is called the basic level concept. However, the notion of a basic level concept is difficult to describe in precise terms; as a …

Bone: An Acute Buffer Of Plasma Sodium During Exhaustive Exercise?, Tamara Hew-Butler, Kristin J. Stuempfle, Martin D. Hoffman Sep 2013

Bone: An Acute Buffer Of Plasma Sodium During Exhaustive Exercise?, Tamara Hew-Butler, Kristin J. Stuempfle, Martin D. Hoffman

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Both hyponatremia and osteopenia separately have been well documented in endurance athletes. Although bone has been shown to act as a “sodium reservoir” to buffer severe plasma sodium derangements in animals, recent data have suggested a similar function in humans. We aimed to explore if acute changes in bone mineral content were associated with changes in plasma sodium concentration in runners participating in a 161 km mountain footrace. Eighteen runners were recruited. Runners were tested immediately pre- and post-race for the following main outcome measures: bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA); plasma sodium concentration …

Organic Carbon In Shallow Subterranean Habitats, Tanja Pipan, David C. Culver Sep 2013

Organic Carbon In Shallow Subterranean Habitats, Tanja Pipan, David C. Culver

KIP Articles

Organic carbon is likely to be a limiting factor in shallow subterranean habitats (SSHs). Data on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in three SSHs are reviewed: (1) hypotelminorheic and associated seepage springs (Nanos Mountain, Slovenia), (2) hyporheic zones (Rhône River, France and seepage streams on Nanos Mountain, Slovenia), and (3) epikarst (China, Slovenia, and USA). Hypotelminorheic habitats are superficial groundwater sites less than 1 m below the surface that exit from seepage springs. Hyporheic habitats are the underflow of streams and rivers. Epikarst is the uppermost zone of karst with extensive small cavities and channels. Nanos hypotelminorheic sites that harbored stygobiotic …

Measuring The Temporal Instability Of Land Change Using The Flow Matrix, D. S.M. Runfola, Robert Gilmore Pontius Sep 2013

Measuring The Temporal Instability Of Land Change Using The Flow Matrix, D. S.M. Runfola, Robert Gilmore Pontius

Geography

This article introduces the Flow matrix, which expresses the sizes of transitions among categories between two time points. We use the Flow matrix to create a metric R that measures the instability of annual change among time intervals that partition the time extent. Specifically, R is the proportion of change that would need to be reallocated to different time interval(s) to achieve uniform change during the time extent. This article computes R for 10 Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and for seven case studies from published land change data. Of the 10 LTER sites analyzed, the Andrews site in …
