Osteoporosis is a growing problem in the world today. With the aging population of the United State’s Baby Boomer generation, healthcare research is shifting dramatically to combat the rising rates of diseases associated with our aging population majority. Compiled with this majority of elderly people is the fact that Americans are living longer. We must face the challenges associated with the aging human body. Osteoporosis is an age-related disease. This study has added to the research available on osteoporosis and has provided enhanced methods to treat osteoporosis, a major problem especially in postmenopausal women. Several Asian studies report an increase …

Retinal Detachment In Mice With Disproportionate Micromelia, Jared R. Jackson, Dr. Robert Seegmiller Sep 2013

Retinal Detachment In Mice With Disproportionate Micromelia, Jared R. Jackson, Dr. Robert Seegmiller

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Stickler syndrome, caused by a mutation of the Collagen 2A1 gene, is the most common cause of inherited retinal detachment in children. A mutation of the same gene in mice causes Disproportionate Micromelia (Dmm). “In cases where mouse mutations occur in genes that are also responsible for human disorders, the mouse strains provide essential model systems for studies of pathogenetic mechanisms.” The purpose of this study is to find and document evidence of retinal detachment that is hypothesized in heterozygous (Dmm/+) mutant mice.

Chondrocyte Apoptosis Correlated With Progression Of Osteoarthritis In Dmm Mice, Ryan Anderson, Dr. Robert E. Seegmiller

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive disease resulting in the degeneration of synovial joint cartilage and is the leading cause of chronic disability in the elderly1. Despite the prevalence of this disease, its pathogenesis is poorly understood. There is need for low cost, short generation animal model to study this disease. For this, we used a proven mouse model as the means for researching OA, the Disproportionate micromellia (Dmm) mouse which has been shown to develop early onset OA. One mechanism involved in OA that we are specifically researching is programmed cell death, apoptosis, of cartilage cells, chondrocytes and how it …

Foraging Habits Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis), Joshua Whitaker, Dr. Todd F. Robinson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Over the course of the last few months the final foraging samples have been collected on five populations of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in the Great Basin and along the Wasatch Front. These locations include the Newfoundland Mountains, Antelope Island, American Fork Canyon, Rock Canyon, and Mt. Nebo. The purpose of this project was to develop an idea of the foraging habits of these different herds, and within the Antelope Island herd, determine the differences in foraging habits between age and sex classes. By no means is this intended as a complete final report, but rather as preparations for a …

Dynamic Edge Effects In Small Mammal Communities Across A Conservation-Agricultural Interface In Swaziland, Zachary M. Hurst, Robert A. Mccleery, Bret A. Collier, Robert J. Fletcher, Nova J. Silvy, Peter J. Taylor, Ara Monadjem

Faculty Publications

Across the planet, high-intensity farming has transformed native vegetation into monocultures, decreasing biodiversity on a landscape scale. Yet landscape-scale changes to biodiversity and community structure often emerge from processes operating at local scales. One common process that can explain changes in biodiversity and community structure is the creation of abrupt habitat edges, which, in turn, generate edge effects. Such effects, while incredibly common, can be highly variable across space and time; however, we currently lack a general analytical framework that can adequately capture such spatio-temporal variability. We extend previous approaches for estimating edge effects to a non-linear mixed modeling framework …

Tall Fescue Endophyte Effects On Tolerance To Water-Deficit Stress, Padmaja Nagabhyru, Randy D. Dinkins, Constance L. Wood, Charles W. Bacon, Christopher L. Schardl

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The endophytic fungus, Neotyphodium coenophialum, can enhance drought tolerance of its host grass, tall fescue. To investigate endophyte effects on plant responses to acute water deficit stress, we did comprehensive profiling of plant metabolite levels in both shoot and root tissues of genetically identical clone pairs of tall fescue with endophyte (E+) and without endophyte (E-) in response to direct water deficit stress. The E- clones were generated by treating E+ plants with fungicide and selectively propagating single tillers. In time course studies on the E+ and E- clones, water was withheld from 0 to 5 days, during which …

Biology And Control Of Common Purslane (Portulaca Oleracea L.), Christopher A. Proctor Sep 2013

Biology And Control Of Common Purslane (Portulaca Oleracea L.), Christopher A. Proctor

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Common purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) is a summer annual with wide geographic and environmental distribution. Purslane is typically regarded as a weed in North America, but it is consumed as a vegetable in many parts of the world. One of the characteristics that make purslane difficult to control as a weed is its ability to vegetatively reproduce. Severed sections of purslane stem containing a node will produce adventitious roots from the cut end of the stem. Isoxaben and simazine were the only two effective preemergence herbicides for controlling purslane in our studies when applied at maximum or one-half maximum …

An Examination Of Marine Snow As A Pathway For Mercury Uptake In The Blue Mussel Mytilus Edulis, Veronica L. Ortiz Sep 2013

An Examination Of Marine Snow As A Pathway For Mercury Uptake In The Blue Mussel Mytilus Edulis, Veronica L. Ortiz

Master's Theses

Bioaccumulation of mercury (Hg), especially as methylmercury (CH3Hg), in the aquatic food web is a continuing public health concern. Extensive research has been conducted regarding the uptake of Hg by various aquatic animals via three main vectors: sediment, bioseston, and water, but virtually no research exists with respect to uptake of CH3Hgor inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) associated with marine snow. Marine snow composed of various organic and inorganic materials has been studied as an effective vertical transporter of nutrients and metals scavenged from the euphotic zone to the benthos. As various aquatic species utilize marine aggregates as …

Centrosomal Kinase Nek2 Cooperates With Oncogenic Pathways To Promote Metastasis, T K. Das, Dibyendu Dana, Suneeta S. Paroly, S. K. Perumal, S. Singh, H. Jhun, J. Pendse, R. L. Cagan, T. T. Talele, Sanjai Kumar

Publications and Research

Centrosomal kinase Nek2 is overexpressed in different cancers, yet how it contributes toward tumorigenesis remains poorly understood. dNek2 overexpression in a Drosophila melanogaster model led to upregulation of Drosophila Wnt ortholog wingless (Wg), and alteration of cell migration markers—Rho1, Rac1 and E-cadherin (Ecad)—resulting in changes in cell shape and tissue morphogenesis. dNek2 overexpression cooperated with receptor tyrosine kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling to upregulate activated Akt, Diap1, Mmp1 and Wg protein to promote local invasion, distant seeding and metastasis. In tumor cell injection assays, dNek2 cooperated with Ras and Src signaling to promote aggressive colonization of tumors into different …

Pf2Α And Pge2 Their Effects On Cell Respiration And Steroidogensis In The Bovine Corpus Luteum, Charlotte B. Bacon

Doctoral Dissertations

Mitochondria are essential to the process of cell respiration and steroidogenesis. Both of these processes impact the viability of the corpus luteum, which is required to maintain early pregnancy. In cattle and other species, progesterone supports gestation, regulates embryogenesis and works in concert with estrogen to maintain the reproductive tract. Many investigators have sought to understand the processes that control regression of the corpus luteum. Two prostaglandins, PGF2a and PGE2, have been implicated in the functioning of this transient gland. It is accepted by most researchers that the primary luteolysin responsible for functional and structural demise of the corpus luteum …

Confirming Artificial Fungal Endophyte Inoculation Of Maize By Aflp And Sem, Alan Chambers, Dr. Brad Geary Sep 2013

Confirming Artificial Fungal Endophyte Inoculation Of Maize By Aflp And Sem, Alan Chambers, Dr. Brad Geary

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Plant microbe interactions have been shown to enhance plant growth (Nassar, 2005) and it is well established that fungal endophytes affect beneficial phenotypes like resistance to drought or insects (Bacon 1997). Plants have been selected for beneficial phenotypic traits for thousands of years, but selection for beneficial microbe interactions is under studied. We desire to investigate improving crop yield and quality, while minimizing the expenditure of natural resources, by growing maize artificially infected with fungal endophytes from plants adapted to stressful environments. We report our early success here.

The Metaphors That Research Students Live By, Rod Pitcher Sep 2013

The Metaphors That Research Students Live By, Rod Pitcher

The Qualitative Report

In this paper I report a study of the ways in which research students think about their research. I took a unique approach by using metaphor analysis to study the students’ conceptions. The research students in this study were recruited for an on - line survey at an Australian research - intensive university in which they answered questions relating to their conceptions of research. Five categories of metaphors for research were arrived at which I have labelled metaphors of space, metaphors of travel, metaphors of action, metaphors of the body and metaphors of ordeal. These metaphors provide useful information about …

Positive Hysteresis, Negative Hysteresis, And Oscillations In Visual Perception, Dobromir Dotov Sep 2013

Positive Hysteresis, Negative Hysteresis, And Oscillations In Visual Perception, Dobromir Dotov

Doctoral Dissertations

The present work addresses a particular problem that humans and other animals need to deal with while making their way through their environments. The environment always affords much more possibilities for action than one could engage in. How does an animal become attuned to one property of the environment and then switch to another one when the circumstances begin to change? What happens when one forces a human participant in an environment as much deprived of possibilities for action as could be possible? The conceptual and mathematical tools of dynamical systems theory and synergetics allow a good expression of the …

A Cross Cultural Gendered Analysis Of France’S And The United States Dietary Guidelines, A. Nikki Yerkes Sep 2013

A Cross Cultural Gendered Analysis Of France’S And The United States Dietary Guidelines, A. Nikki Yerkes

Senior Theses - Anthropology

New information about how Americans should eat comes from health food suppliers, vitamin suppliers, government agencies, fitness experts, doctors, and also the government in the form of dietary guidelines. In this paper I argue that the U.S dietary guidelines are not the product of objective, neutral scientific inquiry, but rather, are a product of a long legacy of culturally constructed moral values with roots in the “Cult of Domesticity.” This legacy has been documented in the Victorian era and has continued into the current day. I discuss the history of national dietary guidelines of then compare and contrast current U.S …

Molecular Investigations Into The Interplay Between Development And Axon Growth And Regeneration, Ephraim F. Trakhtenberg Sep 2013

Molecular Investigations Into The Interplay Between Development And Axon Growth And Regeneration, Ephraim F. Trakhtenberg

Open Access Dissertations

A major reason why central nervous system (CNS) trauma and many neurodegenerative diseases demonstrate only limited endogenous repair is the failure of CNS axons to regenerate. Extracellular factors and developmental changes in maturing CNS neurons regulate CNS axon regeneration. The aim of this thesis was to investigate how molecular changes in maturing neurons affect axon growth and regenerative capacity. We found that regulation of subcellular localization of Set-β protein, which is developmentally upregulated in neuronal nuclei, toggles its function between inhibiting and promoting axon growth and regeneration. We also found that developmentally upregulated serotonin receptor 2C suppresses neurite growth and …

The Culture Of Crossfit: A Lifestyle Prescription For Optimal Health And Fitness, Steven Kuhn Sep 2013

The Culture Of Crossfit: A Lifestyle Prescription For Optimal Health And Fitness, Steven Kuhn

Senior Theses - Anthropology

The increasing frequency of obesity related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension are often the product of a nutritionally inadequate diet along with sedentary lifestyle. The fitness movement called CrossFit, formed by Greg Glassman in 1996, provides an alternative prescription to battling these physical ailments by incorporating high intensity-functional exercise along with a Paleolithic-inspired diet (The Paleo Diet). CrossFit is a distinct lifestyle that encourages participants to strive for an "elite" and "optimal" state of fitness and health. In this thesis I provide ethnographic data collected from participant-observation at a CrossFit gym in Bloomington, IL. I examine scientific …

FESEM result clearly showed the decrease in size and number of pores when LP is added to PLA matrix.

Sectarian History: The Construction Of Meaning In India, Jeremy Higgins Sep 2013

Sectarian History: The Construction Of Meaning In India, Jeremy Higgins

JCCC Honors Journal

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the construction of religion and social identity in India. Religion is an incredibly complex social phenomenon and must be examined holistically for a true appreciation of history. This paper follows the idea of authority and legitimacy, why religions are adopted, who designs administrations around them and how those administrations are informed. This ties into an examination of history, how it is written and what purpose that writing serves from a social perspective. This paper also examines how meaning systems coexist and affect each other, and how they in fact evolve together in …
