Investigation Of Plant Species And Environments For Large Scale Buildings, Michelle Chandler, Dr. Brad Geary

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As I began working on my project, I was also asked to work as the lead student coordinator for a national conference that was to be held at Brigham Young University. In discussions with Dr. Brad Geary, Dr. Phil Allen and Greg Jolley it was decided that since my original thesis could no longer be studied we changed the focus of my ORCA grant to focus on PLANET Student Career Days conference that was to be held at BYU. This conference was to be held March 2006. The new thesis focused on the coordination, planning, and management of 54 teams …

Publications

Dr. Marcham was part of the 9-member team that wrote this paper. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of man-made chemicals associated with a potential risk to human health and the environment. They were used in many building materials, particularly caulking, grout, expansion joint material and paint, from approximately 1950 to 1978. Both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) have published extensive material evaluating human health impacts from exposure to PCBs. The apparent public health risks, including developmental effects in children, reproductive effects and long-term risks for cancer development, have …

Support And Barriers To Help Seeking In Latina/O Migrant Workers, Rachel Becker Sep 2013

Support And Barriers To Help Seeking In Latina/O Migrant Workers, Rachel Becker

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation explored help seeking for mental health concerns in migrant workers using a community-based mixed-methods design. Specifically, the study asked two sets of questions; the first explored individual-level predictors of help seeking and the second focused on contextual-level factors related to mental health, well-being, and help seeking. Participants were 95 Latina/o migrant workers living in South Florida. A portion of these individuals participated in the qualitative phase. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to answer the first set of questions. Results indicated informal help seeking was predicted by gender, acculturation, coping strategy, depressive symptomology, and attitudes toward seeking professional help. …

Novel Pathways For Injury From Offshore Oil Spills: Direct, Sublethal And Indirect Effects Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Pelagic Sargassum Communities, Sean P. Powers, Frank J. Hernandez, Jr, Robert H. Condon, J. Marcus Drymon, Christopher M. Free Sep 2013

Novel Pathways For Injury From Offshore Oil Spills: Direct, Sublethal And Indirect Effects Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Pelagic Sargassum Communities, Sean P. Powers, Frank J. Hernandez, Jr, Robert H. Condon, J. Marcus Drymon, Christopher M. Free

University Faculty and Staff Publications

The pelagic brown alga Sargassum forms an oasis of biodiversity and productivity in an otherwise featureless ocean surface. The vast pool of oil resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill came into contact with a large portion of the Gulf of Mexico’s floating Sargassum mats. Aerial surveys performed during and after the oil spill show compelling evidence of loss and subsequent recovery of Sargassum. Expanding on the trends observed in the aerial surveys, we conducted a series of mesocosm experiments to test the effect of oil and dispersants on the vertical position and weight of the Sargassum complex ( …

Manchu Shamanist Mythology And Ecological Aesthetics, Lijie Yan Sep 2013

Manchu Shamanist Mythology And Ecological Aesthetics, Lijie Yan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Manchu traditional culture of fishing and hunting has maintained a relation of harmonic multi-dimensional coexistence with its natural environment. Shamanic mythology has an animistic philosophical foundation with a primitive poetic thinking, holding nature in awe and veneration. Through constant communication with nature, the human beings are situated in the ecological system, and this means that Manchu life had an ecological aesthetics dimension since early. Manchu shamanism advocates animism, the unity of heaven and earth, and the identity of object and self. In shamanic mythology, the human interacts and keeps a kinship with the nature. Shamans communicate with the human and …

Upland Habitat Quality And Historic Landscape Composition Influence Genetic Variation Of A Pond-Breeding Salamander, Stephen C. Richter, Steve J. Price, Chelsea S. Kross, Jeremiah R. Alexander, Michael E. Dorcas Sep 2013

Upland Habitat Quality And Historic Landscape Composition Influence Genetic Variation Of A Pond-Breeding Salamander, Stephen C. Richter, Steve J. Price, Chelsea S. Kross, Jeremiah R. Alexander, Michael E. Dorcas

Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Understanding the temporal and spatial scale at which habitat alteration impacts populations is important for conservation and management. Amphibians have declined more than other vertebrates, and pond-breeding species are particularly susceptible to habitat loss and fragmentation because they have terrestrial and aquatic life stages. One approach to management of pond-breeding species is protection of core upland habitat surrounding the breeding pond. We used genetic variation as an indicator of population status in a common amphibian species, spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum), to determine how amount of suitable upland habitat relates to population status in the greater Charlotte, North Carolina, …

A Computational Framework For High-Throughput Isotopic Natural Abundance Correction Of Omics-Level Ultra-High Resolution Ft-Ms Datasets, William J. Carreer, Robert M. Flight, Hunter N. B. Moseley Sep 2013

A Computational Framework For High-Throughput Isotopic Natural Abundance Correction Of Omics-Level Ultra-High Resolution Ft-Ms Datasets, William J. Carreer, Robert M. Flight, Hunter N. B. Moseley

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

New metabolomics applications of ultra-high resolution and accuracy mass spectrometry can provide thousands of detectable isotopologues, with the number of potentially detectable isotopologues increasing exponentially with the number of stable isotopes used in newer isotope tracing methods like stable isotope-resolved metabolomics (SIRM) experiments. This huge increase in usable data requires software capable of correcting the large number of isotopologue peaks resulting from SIRM experiments in a timely manner. We describe the design of a new algorithm and software system capable of handling these high volumes of data, while including quality control methods for maintaining data quality. We validate this new …

Are You My Motherboard? : The Effects Of Technology On The Parent-Child Relationship, David S. Sullivan

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

New technologies have been evolving at a rapid pace over the last few decades. The convenience afforded by many technologies presents interesting questions in terms of attachment. Recent research on internet addiction disorder (IAD) has revealed that technology may be affecting people on a social, familial, and neurophysiological basis. This research explores the effects of technology on the parent-child relationship. The research interviewed six participants through telephone interviews: treatment participants (TP, n=2) in this research are both young men who meet criteria for IAD and completed treatment relative to their technology addiction; clinical participants (CP, n=4) in this research are …

Impact Of Treatment Response Metrics On Photodynamic Therapy Planning And Outcomes In A Three-Dimensional Model Of Ovarian Cancer, Sriram Anbil, Imran Rizvi, Jonathan P. Celli, Nermina Alagic, Brian W. Pogue, Tayyaba Hasan Sep 2013

Pogue, Tayyaba Hasan

Dartmouth Scholarship

Common methods to characterize treatment efficacy based on morphological imaging may misrepresent outcomes and exclude effective therapies. Using a three-dimensional model of ovarian cancer, two functional treatment response metrics are used to evaluate photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacy: total volume, calculated from viable and nonviable cells, and live volume, calculated from viable cells. The utility of these volume-based metrics is corroborated using independent reporters of photodynamic activity: viability, a common fluorescence-based ratiometric analysis, and photosensitizer photobleaching, which is characterized by a loss of fluorescence due in part to the production of reactive species during PDT. Live volume correlated with both photobleaching …

Continuous Cyclic Mechanical Tension Increases Ank Expression In Endplate Chondrocytes Through The Tgf-Β1 And P38 Pathway, H Xu, X Zhang, H Wang, Y Zhang, Y Shi, X Zhang Sep 2013

Continuous Cyclic Mechanical Tension Increases Ank Expression In Endplate Chondrocytes Through The Tgf-Β1 And P38 Pathway, H Xu, X Zhang, H Wang, Y Zhang, Y Shi, X Zhang

Open Access Publications

The normal ANK protein has a strong influence on anti-calcification. It is known that TGF-β1 is also able to induce extracellular inorganic pyrophosphate (ePPi) elaboration via the TGF-β1-induced ank gene expression and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling acts as a downstream effector of TGF-β1. We hypothesized that the expression of the ank gene is regulated by mechanics through TGF-β1-p38 pathway. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of short-time mechanical tension-induced ank gene expression. We found that the continuous cyclic mechanical tension (CCMT) increased the ank gene expression in the endplate chondrocytes, and there was an increase in the …

Mixed-Race Studies; Misstep Or The Next Step For Ethnic Studies In A Blending Nation?, Jennifer E. Robe Sep 2013

Mixed-Race Studies; Misstep Or The Next Step For Ethnic Studies In A Blending Nation?, Jennifer E. Robe

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

In January of 2011, the New York Times reported that 2010 U.S. Census data shows that younger generations are self-reporting their racial identity as multiracial or mixed-race in higher numbers than ever before¹. Classes in higher education that engage with race and ethnicity, often but not always as part of Ethnic Studies programs in universities, discuss and critique the categorizations of race and ethnicity. However, there is a social, political and economic power and privilege that groups have in being recognized as part of a categorized racial and/or ethnic group that mixedrace or multiracial identified individuals do not have when …

Against Metametaphysical Semanticism, Ryan Marquez Sep 2013

Against Metametaphysical Semanticism, Ryan Marquez

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

This paper presents a brief overview of meta-metaphysics and gives an account of why the various philosophers believe such a field exists, or ought to exist. The paper then discusses one particular approach in meta-metaphysical analysis as described by Eli Hirsch called semanticism and how it purports to resolve the problems within traditional metaphysics. Finally, it makes the case that Hirsch’s account utilizes first-order metaphysical assumptions in its argumentation and thus undermines its legitimacy as being part of an independent philosophical field.
