Comparative Study Between Glimepiride And Glibenclamide In The Treatment Of Type 2 Diabetic Patients In Al-Yarmouk Hospita, Fadia.Y.Al-Hamdani, Maitham.M. Al-Mefraji Sep 2013

Comparative Study Between Glimepiride And Glibenclamide In The Treatment Of Type 2 Diabetic Patients In Al-Yarmouk Hospita, Fadia.Y.Al-Hamdani, Maitham.M. Al-Mefraji

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Second-generation sulfonylureas (SU) are efficacious, generally well-tolerated, cost-effective options for the medical management of diabetes. Glimepiride which is sometimes classified as a third-generation has benefits over other in that it has a considerably lower binding affinity for the B-cell receptor, result in a modulation of insulin release, and a decreased potential for inducing hypoglycemia. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the outcome of using glimepiride and glibenclamide in type 2 diabetic patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A single blinded randomized clinical trial was adopted, in which 64 already diagnosed diabetic patients (regardless disease duration) were recruited from Al-Yarmouk …

Autoantibodies And Cytokines Levels In Type 1 Diabetic Patients, Meroj Ahmed Jasem Sep 2013

Autoantibodies And Cytokines Levels In Type 1 Diabetic Patients, Meroj Ahmed Jasem

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes is characterized by a complete or near-complete insulin deficiency caused by an immune-mediated selective destruction of the insulin-producing β-cells in the Islets of Langerhans. Inflammatory mechanisms play a key role in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. Many findings suggest that the Islet autoantibody status in type 1 diabetes is linked to disease activity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the hypothesis that the systemic immunoregulatory balance, as defined by levels of circulating cytokines, is associated with Islet autoantibody status. METHODS: Cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, IL-5,IL-10, TNF-β and INF-γ) and Islet autoantibodies (ICA, GADA, IA-2) were measured in 56 …

Tnf-Alpha Neutralizing Antibody Blocks Thermal Sensitivity Induced By Compound 48/80-Provoked Mast Cell Degranulation, Devavani Chatterjea, Luisa Paredes, Tijana Martinov, Evelyn Balsells, Juliann Allen, Akilah Sykes, Alyssa Ashbaugh Sep 2013

Tnf-Alpha Neutralizing Antibody Blocks Thermal Sensitivity Induced By Compound 48/80-Provoked Mast Cell Degranulation, Devavani Chatterjea, Luisa Paredes, Tijana Martinov, Evelyn Balsells, Juliann Allen, Akilah Sykes, Alyssa Ashbaugh

Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND:
Neuro-inflammatory circuits in the tissue regulate the complex pathophysiology of pain. Protective nociceptive pain serves as an early warning system against noxious environmental stimuli. Tissue-resident mast cells orchestrate the increased thermal sensitivity following injection of basic secretagogue compound 48/80 in the hind paw tissues of ND4 mice. Here we investigated the effects of pre-treatment with TNF-α neutralizing antibody on compound 48/80-provoked thermal hyperalgesia.

METHODS:
We treated ND4 Swiss male mice with intravenous anti-TNF-α antibody or vehicle 30 minutes prior to bilateral, intra-plantar compound 48/80 administration and measured changes in the timing of hind paw withdrawal observed subsequent to mice …

Second Grader’S Comprehension Of Expository Text: Examining The Effectiveness Of Text Structure As A Comprehension Strategy, Michelle Marie Mcclellan, Dr. Kendra M. Hall Sep 2013

Second Grader’S Comprehension Of Expository Text: Examining The Effectiveness Of Text Structure As A Comprehension Strategy, Michelle Marie Mcclellan, Dr. Kendra M. Hall

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Teaching students to read is one of the most important aspects taught in an elementary classroom and often is one of the harder concepts to teach. Teachers use many different strategies when they teach students to read. One method of teaching the students is to teach comprehension strategies, which tends to be one of the more complex methods. Many teachers often struggle with this aspect of teaching as they try to find the most efficient way to teach their students. For the project, it was proposed that we use expository texts and text structure to see how well the students …

Observed Physiological Changes In Na+,K+-Atpase In Bovine Lens Epithelial Cells Upon Ouabain Exposure, Steven Jason Crellin, Dr. Steven Graves Sep 2013

Observed Physiological Changes In Na+,K+-Atpase In Bovine Lens Epithelial Cells Upon Ouabain Exposure, Steven Jason Crellin, Dr. Steven Graves

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Age-related cataractogenesis is a worldwide leading cause of blindness. The fact that the causes as well as the apparent symptoms of cataract are diverse has contributed to increased difficulty in the study of the ailment. However, a ubiquitous symptom in animal cataract is the presence of elevated sodium concentrations within the lens. Therefore, studies have emphasized the importance of the sodium pump, or Na+,K+-ATPase in the lens, particularly in the lens epithelial cells.1 The sodium pump is primarily responsible for extruding three Na+ ions from within the cell and taking in two K+ ions, thus establishing a net negative charge …

Optimization Of Kidney Cancer Cell Assay Conditions, Bryce Harbertson, Dr. Heidi Vollmer-Snarr Sep 2013

Optimization Of Kidney Cancer Cell Assay Conditions, Bryce Harbertson, Dr. Heidi Vollmer-Snarr

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Photodynamic therapy involves the use of light-sensitive compounds that, upon irradiation, become lethal to cells. These light-sensitive compounds are referred to as photosensitizers. A class of compounds known as pyridinium bis-retinoids are being investigated as potential photosensitizers, and therefore, chemotherapeutic drugs (Figure 1). One of the primary concerns in these investigations is determining the optimal conditions under which to evaluate these drugs. The optimization of these parameters will allow us to compare the effectiveness of our drugs with others already in existence, and will also serve as a basis for further investigations in animal trials and later on in clinical …

It’S Time To Fear! Interval Timing In Odor Fear Conditioning In Rats, Kiseko Shionoya, Chloé Hegoburu, Bruce L. Brown, Regina M. Sullivan, Valérie Doyère, Anne-Marie Mouly Sep 2013

It’S Time To Fear! Interval Timing In Odor Fear Conditioning In Rats, Kiseko Shionoya, Chloé Hegoburu, Bruce L. Brown, Regina M. Sullivan, Valérie Doyère, Anne-Marie Mouly

Publications and Research

Time perception is crucial to goal attainment in humans and other animals, and interval timing also guides fundamental animal behaviors. Accumulating evidence has made it clear that in associative learning, temporal relations between events are encoded, and a few studies suggest this temporal learning occurs very rapidly. Most of these studies, however, have used methodologies that do not permit investigating the emergence of this temporal learning. In the present study we monitored respiration, ultrasonic vocalization (USV) and freezing behavior in rats in order to perform fine-grain analysis of fear responses during odor fear conditioning. In this paradigm an initially neutral …
