Operation And Modification Of A B-Stage For Efficient Nitrogen Removal In An A/B Process Pilot Study, Ryder Bunce Oct 2013

Operation And Modification Of A B-Stage For Efficient Nitrogen Removal In An A/B Process Pilot Study, Ryder Bunce

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Hampton Roads Sanitation District's Chesapeake-Elizabeth Wastewater Treatment Plant is a High-Rate Activated Sludge (HRAS) plant with no primary clarifiers. The plant operates at an SRT of 1.5 - 2 days and does not perform biological nitrogen removal (BNR). By 2021 HRSD anticipates the plant will be included in a bubble permit, resulting in a total nitrogen (TN) effluent target of approximately 5-8 mg/L. Converting the plant to a conventional BNR process would require a significant increase in reactor volume. Capital costs for the upgrade are estimated at 125 -150 million dollars, with a dramatic increase in operating costs as well. …

The I-Pad Research Initiative: The Impact Of I-Pads As Engagement Tools For Children With Asperger’S Disorder, Brunette Robinson

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Children living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often exist in their own world, devoid of interaction or engagement with others (Gilmour, Hill, Place & Skuse, 2004). The iPad Research Initiative, carried out by the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Department of Social Work, assessed the effectiveness of the use of iPads to increase engagement and interaction between children with autism. Parents of children and youth with autism have found this technology to be effective and cost-efficient (Seshadri, 2012). In this research I examined samples from a larger research project to determine if young males between 10 and 12 years old and …

Online Profiles Of Same-Sex Couples Hoping To Adopt: A Communication Analysis, Caprisha Curry Sep 2013

Online Profiles Of Same-Sex Couples Hoping To Adopt: A Communication Analysis, Caprisha Curry

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The number of same-sex couples who are parents has increased dramatically in the last decade (Goldberg & Kinkler 2011). Data from the U.S. Census indicates that approximately 1 in 5 same-sex male couples and 1 in 3 same-sex female couples are raising children (Goldberg & Kinkler, 2011), and many other gays and lesbians are hoping and/or waiting to adopt. This study examines selected online profiles of same-sex couples hoping to adopt. Specifically, I am interested in analyzing how these couples portray themselves online to appeal to pregnant women seeking adoptive families. Same-sex couples must find the means to address the …

Exploring 19th Century Gift Books In A Special Collection: A Collection Analysis, Bernadette Birzer Sep 2013

Exploring 19th Century Gift Books In A Special Collection: A Collection Analysis, Bernadette Birzer

SLIS Connecting

Descriptions of 19th century literature can be limited because items may be out of print, hard to find, or undocumented. McCain Library and Archives at Southern Miss offers a limited selection of 19th century gift books and annuals; these books can be used to evaluate certain distinct characteristics regarding publishers, dates of publication, authors, and binding styles. This study can help to determine prominent genre characteristics for this era, which may be otherwise difficult to determine considering the scarcity of some of the titles and their editions.

Designerly Well-Being: Implications For Pedagogy That Develops Design Capability, Kay Stables Sep 2013

Designerly Well-Being: Implications For Pedagogy That Develops Design Capability, Kay Stables

Learn X Design Conference Series

The concept of "designerly well-being" identifies the value for individuals and society of the development of design capability inherent in all humans. This concept builds on ideas more generally of capability, well-being and democratic design. The paper explores pedagogic issues, particularly in relation to the development of an individual's understanding of themselves as a designer, how they engage effectively in the processes of designing and how they develop the confidence and confidence to positively exploit their own designerly capability in their personal life, social and community life or professional life. Key to this is the stance of the educator on …

Ordinary And Poor People In 18th-Century Delaware, John Bedell, Gerald P. Scharfenberger Sep 2013

Ordinary And Poor People In 18th-Century Delaware, John Bedell, Gerald P. Scharfenberger

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The authors and their colleagues have recently carried out excavations at three 18th-century farm sites in central Delaware. The Augustine Creek South and Thomas Dawson Sites were both occupied by ordinary property owners in the 1730 to 1770 period. The Augustine Creek North Site was occupied from about 1750 to 1810 by unknown but probably poor tenants, possibly in two chronologically separate occupations. At all three sites, architectural remains and artifact deposits were found. Analysis of these sites has focused on the question of how fully ordinary and poor people participated in the social, economic, and intellectural changes of the …

Recognizing Nonhuman Morality, Simon J. Coghlan Sep 2013

Recognizing Nonhuman Morality, Simon J. Coghlan

Between the Species

Claims that some sorts of genuine moral behavior exist in nonhuman beings are increasingly common. Many people, however, remain unconvinced, despite growing acceptance of the remarkable behavioral complexity of animals and despite the admission that there may be significant differences between human and nonhuman moral behavior. This paper argues that the rejection of “moral animals” is misplaced. Yet at the same time, it attempts to show how the philosophical task of exhibiting the possibility of nonhuman moral behavior is often misguided, leaving claims about nonhuman morality unnecessarily exposed to philosophical rejection.

High Predation On Small Populations: Avian Predation On Imperiled Salmonids, Ann-Marie Osterback, Danielle Frechette, Andrew Shelton, Sean Hayes, Morgan Bond, Scott A. Shaffer, Jonathan Moore

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Generalist predators can contribute to extinction risk of imperiled prey populations even through incidental predation. Quantifying predation on small populations is important to manage their recovery, however predation is often challenging to observe directly. Recovery of prey tags at predator colonies can indirectly provide minimum estimates of predation, however overall predation rates often remain unquantifiable because an unknown proportion of tags are deposited off‐colony. Here, we estimated overall predation rates on threatened wild juvenile steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss by generalist adult Western Gulls Larus occidentalis in six central California (USA) watersheds. We estimated predation rates by gulls from the recapture of …

Metabolic Characterization Of A Sirt5 Deficient Mouse Model, Jiujiu Yu, Sushabhan Sadhukhan, Lilia G. Noriega, Norman Moullan, Bin He, Robert S. Weiss, Hening Lin, Kristina Schoonjans, Johan Auwerx Sep 2013

Metabolic Characterization Of A Sirt5 Deficient Mouse Model, Jiujiu Yu, Sushabhan Sadhukhan, Lilia G. Noriega, Norman Moullan, Bin He, Robert S. Weiss, Hening Lin, Kristina Schoonjans, Johan Auwerx

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Sirt5, localized in the mitochondria, is a member of sirtuin family of NAD1-dependent deacetylases. Sirt5 was shown to deacetylate and activate carbamoyl phosphate synthase 1. Most recently, Sirt5 was reported to be the predominant protein desuccinylase and demalonylase in the mitochondria because the ablation of Sirt5 enhanced the global succinylation and malonylation of mitochondrial proteins, including many metabolic enzymes. In order to determine the physiological role of Sirt5 in metabolic homeostasis, we generated a germline Sirt5 deficient (Sirt52/2) mouse model and performed a thorough metabolic characterization of this mouse line. Although a global protein hypersuccinylation and elevated serum ammonia during …

Global Trends In Seasonality Of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (Ndvi), 1982–2011, J. Ronald Eastman, Florencia Sangermano, Elia Axinia Machado, John Rogan, Assaf Anyamba

Publications and Research

A 30-year series of global monthly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) imagery derived from the Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies (GIMMS) NDVI3g archive was analyzed for the presence of trends in changing seasonality. Using the Seasonal Trend Analysis (STA) procedure, over half (56.30%) of land surfaces were found to exhibit significant trends. Almost half (46.10%) of the significant trends belonged to three classes of seasonal trends (or changes). Class 1 consisted of areas that experienced a uniform increase in NDVI throughout the year, and was primarily associated with forested areas, particularly broadleaf forests. Class 2 consisted of areas experiencing …

Can A Tiger Change Its Spots? A Test Of The Stability Of Spot Patterns For Identification Of Individual Tiger Salamanders (Ambystoma Tigrinum), Heather L. Waye Sep 2013

Can A Tiger Change Its Spots? A Test Of The Stability Of Spot Patterns For Identification Of Individual Tiger Salamanders (Ambystoma Tigrinum), Heather L. Waye

Biology Publications

There is increasing interest in the use of unique spot patterns as a way to “mark” individual amphibians as an alternative to invasive techniques for studies of free-ranging populations. however, studies testing the efficacy of the pattern recognition technique have largely drawn their conclusions from the ability to recognize recaptured individuals that were identified solely by spot pattern. individuals whose color pattern changed significantly would therefore not be identified upon recapture. for this study, Tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) were captured in west-central Minnesota and maintained in captivity for one year, and their dorsal and ventral surfaces photographed approximately …

Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis As An Innovative Approach To Managing Zoonoses: Results From A Study On Lyme Disease In Canada, Cécile Aenishaenslin, Valérie Hongoh, Hassane D. Cissé, Anne Gatewood Hoen

Dartmouth Scholarship

ackground: Zoonoses are a growing international threat interacting at the human-animal-environment interface and call for transdisciplinary and multi-sectoral approaches in order to achieve effective disease management. The recent emergence of Lyme disease in Quebec, Canada is a good example of a complex health issue for which the public health sector must find protective interventions. Traditional preventive and control interventions can have important environmental, social and economic impacts and as a result, decision-making requires a systems approach capable of integrating these multiple aspects of interventions. This paper presents the results from a study of a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach for …

"Game Over" For The Climate: The Keystone Xl Pipeline On Tv News, Elisabeth Wilder Sep 2013

"Game Over" For The Climate: The Keystone Xl Pipeline On Tv News, Elisabeth Wilder

Dissertations and Theses

The overwhelming consensus of the world's climate scientists is that we must rapidly reduce our greenhouse emissions if we are to avoid catastrophic and irreversible climate change. Yet the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry tar sands oil that emits three to four times the carbon emissions of conventional gasoline across the U.S., is supported by a solid majority of Americans. This level of support for a project a proposal that would dramatically increase greenhouse gas emissions, pollute sensitive lands and water sources, and threaten the health and safety of communities along the way begs the question: what kind …

The Effects Of Invasive Plants On Biodiversity Across Spatial Scales, Kristin Irene Powell Sep 2013

The Effects Of Invasive Plants On Biodiversity Across Spatial Scales, Kristin Irene Powell

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Although introduced plant species are often considered to be one of the most notable anthropogenic threats to biodiversity, their influence on biodiversity remains controversial. Some studies have shown large declines in biodiversity in plant-invaded areas, whereas others have noted that plant invasions are rarely implicated as the cause of species extinctions. This dissertation aims to synthesize this seemingly conflicting literature on the effects of invasive plants on biodiversity. The overarching hypothesis in this research is that the effect of invasive plant species on biodiversity is scale-dependent, and the discrepancy among studies can be explained by a difference in the scales …
