The rapid growth of mobile learning is influenced by the ability to access learning content anytime and anywhere. The on demand capability is available because mobile devices allow for convergence of internet and communications technologies. At the same time, the availability of engines makes development of mobile applications faster and seamless. However, not all mobile development engines are alike. This paper discusses on the development of mobile learning applications using mobile development engines in teaching Filipinos on responsible voting. Specifically, this paper discusses how AndEngine, Ren’Py, and homegrown Usbong were used to develop a mobile board game and a mobile …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The production of dry-grind corn ethanol results in the generation of intermediate products, thin and whole stillage, which require energy-intensive downstream processing for conversion into commercial animal feed products. Hydrothermal carbonization of thin and whole stillage coupled with anaerobic digestion was investigated as alternative processing methods that could benefit the industry. By substantially eliminating evaporation of water, reductions in downstream energy consumption from 65% to 73% were achieved while generating hydrochar, fatty acids, treated process water, and biogas co-products providing new opportunities for the industry. Processing whole stillage in this manner produced the four co-products, eliminated centrifugation and evaporation, and …
A Quadruplex Real-Time Pcr Assay For The Rapid Detection And Differentiation Of The Burkholderia Pseudomallei Complex: B. Mallei, B. Pseudomallei, And B. Thailandensis, Chinn-Woan Lowe
Theses and Dissertations
Methods for the rapid detection and differentiation of the Burkholderia pseudomallei complex comprising B. pseudomallei, B. mallei, and B. thailandensis, have been the topic of recent research due to the high degree of phenotypic and genotypic similarities of these species. B. pseudomallei and B. mallei are the causative agents of melioidosis and glanders, respectively. B. pseudomallei and B. mallei are recognized by the CDC as tier 1 select agents. Although B. thailandensis is generally avirulent in mammals, this species displays very similar phenotypic characteristics to that of B. pseudomallei. Optimal identification of these species remains problematic, …
Rethinking A Reinvigorated Right To Assemble , Nicholas S. Brod
Rethinking A Reinvigorated Right To Assemble , Nicholas S. Brod
Duke Law Journal
Revived after a decades-long slumber, the First Amendment’s Assembly Clause has garnered robust attention of late. Endeavoring to reinvigorate this forgotten clause, legal scholars have outlined a normative vision of the assembly right that would better safeguard the freedom of association. This Note argues that such an approach—no matter its merits or its deficiencies—overlooks the Clause’s central aim. The assembly right is in fact best understood as an assembly right, not as a right about associations. This Note advances that proposition by closely analyzing the text and the history of the Assembly Clause, a project that has not yet been …
Direct Effect Jurisdiction Under The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act: Searching For An Integrated Approach, John C. Balzano
Direct Effect Jurisdiction Under The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act: Searching For An Integrated Approach, John C. Balzano
Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law
Recent decisions by the United States Supreme Court as to the international reach of American antitrust and securities statutes have engendered significant debate about the appropriate extraterritorial application of federal law. Such debates have also slowly come to include some mention of the right application of state law beyond U.S. boundaries through long-arm statutes. The arguments of different commentators and jurists universally support careful consideration of the implications of prescribing a rule of U.S. law to foreign conduct, absent an appropriate basis in international law and practice. The time is now right, therefore, to consider how these debates affect a …

Insects As Educational Tools: An Online Course Teaching The Use Of Insects As Instructional Tools, Douglas A. Golick, Tiffany M. Heng-Moss
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Publication of the 1996 National Science Education Standards (NSES) initiated a push to transform science education by engaging K-12 students in active learning through inquiry-based teaching (National Research Council, 1996). Students need opportunities to construct knowledge by asking questions, developing hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, and interpreting and communicating results. Inquiry teaching has been shown to improve students’ attitudes toward science, enhance their performance, and promote scientific literacy (Haury, 1993; Lindberg, 1990: Mattheis and Nakayama, 1988; Rakow, 1986).
Providing both pre- and in-service teachers with courses and professional development programs that promote inquiry teaching are vital to teacher education (National …

Repunctuated Feminism: Marketing Menstrual Suppression Through The Rhetoric Of Choice, Carly S. Woods
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This essay examines the rhetoric of choice as it is used by direct-to-consumer campaigns to persuade women to limit menstruation through the consumption of oral contraceptives. Using the tools of feminist rhetorical criticism, I trace how choice is rhetorically constructed to suggest that menstrual suppression is a path to individual empowerment while co-opting second and post-second-wave rhetorics. Finally, I explore the meaning of these constructions of choice and suggest broader implications for ongoing feminist movements.

A New Angle On Microscopic Suspension Feeders Near Boundaries, Rachel E. Pepper, Marcus Roper, Sangjin Ryu, Nobuyoshi Matsumoto, Moeto Nagai, Howard A. Stone
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Microscopic sessile suspension feeders are a critical component in aquatic ecosystems, acting as an intermediate trophic stage between bacteria and higher eukaryotic taxa. Because they live attached to boundaries, it has long been thought that recirculation of the feeding currents produced by sessile suspension feeders inhibits their ability to access fresh fluid. However, previous models for the feeding flows of these organisms assume that they feed by pushing fluid perpendicular to surfaces they live upon, whereas we observe that sessile suspension feeders often feed at an angle to these boundaries. Using experiments and calculations, we show that living suspension feeders …

Melanopsin, expressed in a subset of retinal ganglion cells, mediates behavioral adaptation to ambient light and other non-image forming photic responses. This has raised the possibility that pharmacological manipulation of melanopsin can modulate several CNS responses including photophobia, sleep, circadian rhythms and neuroendocrine function. Here we describe the identification of a potent synthetic melanopsin antagonist with in vivo activity. Novel sulfonamide compounds inhibiting melanopsin (opsinamides) compete with retinal binding to melanopsin and inhibit its function without affecting rod/cone mediated responses. In vivo administration of opsinamides to mice specifically and reversibly modified melanopsin-dependent light responses including the pupillary light reflex and …

Embracing Change: Exploring How Creative Professionals Use Interactive Media In Advertising Campaigns, Adam Wagler
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications
Advertising agencies are incorporating new forms of interactive media into campaigns as media continues to rapidly change. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study is to explore how five creative professionals at leading advertising agencies in the Midwest are integrating interactive media into campaigns. Through a series of interviews this project helps solidify what it means to integrate interactive media. The findings illustrate a fundamental shift in an industry that is moving away from “advertising.” An industry built around traditional media now requires creatives to incorporate dynamic, mobile, and social media into the marketing mix. Advertising agencies must engage audiences …

Making More Room For Physical Activity In Home-Based Child Care, Nanci Weinberger
Applied Psychology Department Faculty Journal Articles
Imagine a public fountain that spans a large plaza. If young children were there, would they splish-splash in the giant puddle of water? Imagine an open field with large stones cropping up from the grass. Would young children try any way they could to climb on the stones? Imagine a home where couch pillows lie around on the floor. Would young children jump on the pillows?
Democracy And The Right To Vote: Rethinking Democratic Rights Under The Charter, Yasmin Dawood
Democracy And The Right To Vote: Rethinking Democratic Rights Under The Charter, Yasmin Dawood
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article addresses the Supreme Court of Canada’s theory of democracy and the right to vote. After setting forth the Court’s general approach to democracy, I develop a new conceptual framework for the Court’s approach to democratic rights. First, I argue that the Court has adopted a “bundle of democratic rights” approach to the right to vote. By this I mean that the Court has interpreted the right to vote as consisting of multiple democratic rights, each of which is concerned with a particular facet of democratic governance. Second, I claim that the democratic rights recognized by the Court are …
Metamorphic Detection Using Singular Value Decomposition, Ranjith Kumar Jidigam
Metamorphic Detection Using Singular Value Decomposition, Ranjith Kumar Jidigam
Master's Projects
Metamorphic malware changes its internal structure with each infection, while maintaining its original functionality. Such malware can be difficult to detect using static techniques, since there may be no common signature across infections. In this research we apply a score based on Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to the problem of metamorphic detection. SVD is a linear algebraic technique which is applicable to a wide range of problems, including facial recognition. Previous research has shown that a similar facial recognition technique yields good results when applied to metamorphic malware detection. We present experimental results and we analyze the effectiveness and efficiency …
Queer Pedagogical Desire: A Study Guide, Matt Brim
Queer Pedagogical Desire: A Study Guide, Matt Brim
Publications and Research
This essay explores the queer pedagogical desires that attended my writing of the Study Guide for the documentary film United in Anger: A History of ACT UP (Jim Hubbard, 2012). The analysis takes up Robyn Wiegman’s central question in Object Lessons, “What is it we expect our relationship to our objects of study to do?”, which is of particular importance to the discipline of queer studies insofar as the field is oriented around the desire to meld social justice with critical pedagogy. The queer professor’s desire in the case of the Study Guide-as-object was to create a text that …

Voice-Over Documentaries: Synchronization Techniques In English-Spanish And English-Polish Translation, Katarzyna Sepielak
Voice-Over Documentaries: Synchronization Techniques In English-Spanish And English-Polish Translation, Katarzyna Sepielak
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This thesis discusses a fundamental aspect related to voice-over translation in documentaries: synchronization techniques. The analysis is based on the classification of different types of synchronies— action synchrony, kinetic synchrony, voice-over isochrony, and literal synchrony— proposed by Franco, Matamala, and Orero (2010). The aim of this study is to provide insight about why and when different synchronies may be triggered, both by textual and/or by extralinguistic factors, in filmic material. The analysis is thus based on a comparison of the Spanish and Polish voiceover translations of the same documentary episode of the series Seconds from Disaster originally produced in English. …

Error Recovered Hierarchical Classification, Shiai Zhu, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Hierarchical classification (HC) is a popular and efficient way for detecting the semantic concepts from the images. However, the conventional HC, which always selects the branch with the highest classification response to go on, has the risk of propagating serious errors from higher levels of the hierarchy to the lower levels. We argue that the highestresponse-first strategy is too arbitrary, because the candidate nodes are considered individually which ignores the semantic relationship among them. In this paper, we propose a novel method for HC, which is able to utilize the semantic relationship among candidate nodes and their children to recover …

On Effects Of Visual Query Complexity, Jialie Shen, Cheng Zhiyong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As an effective technique to manage large scale image collections, content-based image retrieval (CBIR) has been received great attentions and became a very active research domain in recent years. While assessing system performance is one of the key factors for the related technological advancement, relatively little attention has been paid to model and analyze test queries. This paper documents a study on the problem of determining visual query complexity as a measure for predicting image retrieval performance. We propose a quantitative metric for measuring complexity of image queries for content-based image search engine. A set of experiments are carried out …
