Resveratrol Induced Apoptosis In A Human Adenosquamous Carcinoma Cell Line (Cal-27 Cells), Saquib A. Siddiqi
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
Radiotherapy and surgery are the two principal modalities in the treatment of head and neck cancers, and both therapies can result in severe adverse effects and ultimately lower the quality of life. It is of paramount importance to develop reagents that target the cancer cell specifically without affecting the normal non-cancer cells. Using the tongue cancer cell line Cal 27 as a model system, we dissected the molecular mechanism of the resveratrol-induced cancer cell apoptosis. After demonstrating that resveratrol induces the cancer cell apoptosis in a dose- and time-dependent manner, a systemic apoptosis protein array was conducted to identify the …

The Relationship Between Socio-Economic Status And The Academic Achievement Of Culturally Diverse Students, Yvette P. Ford
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
Test results have shown that culturally diverse students from both high and low socioeconomic groups have continued to underperform when compared to the dominant group.
The study focused on high achieving minority students in order to gain deeper insight of factors that lead to high academic achievement of culturally diverse students (Hispanics and Blacks) from both high and low socio-economic groups. The data for this study included the 2012 CRCT of middle school students, and interview records with 4 students, 4 parents and 4 teachers. The quantitative data were analyzed and sought to answer the following research questions: (a) Does …

The Direct And Indirect Paths Impacting Geometry Student Achievement, Marlynn Bailey
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
Previous studies have shown that several key variables influence student achievement in geometry, but more research needs to be conducted to determine how these variables interact. A model of achievement in geometry was tested on a sample of 102 high school students. Structural equation modeling was used to test hypothesized relationships among variables linked to successful problem solving in geometry. These variables, including motivation, achievement emotions, pictorial representation, and categorization skills were examined for their influence on geometry achievement. Results indicated that the model fit well. Achievement emotions, specifically boredom and enjoyment, had a significant influence on student motivation. Student …

A Clinical Interview For Assessing Student Learning In A University-Level Craft Technology Course, Victor R. Lee, Deborah A. Fields
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
This paper describes the design and development of a clinical interview protocol, the “Interactive Toy Interview” (ITI), that was used to assess prior knowledge and resultant learning among undergraduate students enrolled in a new, university-level “Craft Technologies” course. This new course involved several weeks of project work with electronic textiles and soft circuits. The ITI draws on prior work assessing learning with e-textiles, such as circuit diagram drawing tasks and ‘debuggems’, but it is based on use of existing commercial toys and objects. We present excerpts from interviews with a student who reported no prior background with sewing, circuitry, or …
“An Imperialism Of The Imagination”: Muslim Characters And Western Authors In The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, Robin K. Miller
“An Imperialism Of The Imagination”: Muslim Characters And Western Authors In The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, Robin K. Miller
Student Publications
This paper specifically discusses the cultural attitudes that made writing fully realized Muslim characters problematic for Western authors during the 19th and 20th centuries and also how, through their writing, certain authors perpetuated these attitudes. The discussed authors and works include William Beckford's Vathek, Lord Byron's poem “The Giaour,” multiple short stories from the periodical collection Oriental Stories, one of Hergé's installments of The Adventures of Tintin, and E.M. Hull's novel The Sheik. Three “types” of Muslim characters emerge in these works: the good, the bad, and the white. All three reflect Western attitudes towards the East as a place …
Protecting The Pachyderm: The Significance Of Ivory Trade Regulation For African Elephant Conservation, Sharon Montazeri
Protecting The Pachyderm: The Significance Of Ivory Trade Regulation For African Elephant Conservation, Sharon Montazeri
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note argues that the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) should have accepted CoP16 Proposal 12 at its 2013 meeting, which sought to prohibit future proposals allowing the trade of elephant ivory for nine years. The proposal aligns with CITES' mission to protect endangered species by eliminating incentives for harmful trade practices. While CITES relies on member states to implement conservation measures, the note contends that a trade ban, coupled with additional protections and public education, is essential to prevent further declines in African elephant populations.
Identifying Chromosome Rearrangements In The Allopolyploid Brassica Napus Using Pyrosequencing, Alexandra R. Barbella
Identifying Chromosome Rearrangements In The Allopolyploid Brassica Napus Using Pyrosequencing, Alexandra R. Barbella
Master's Theses
Allopolyploids form through the hybridization of two or more diploid genomes. A challenge to reproduction in allopolyploids is that pairing can occur between homologous chromosomes or homeologous chromosomes (i.e.different subgenomes.). Crossover between homeologous chromosomes can result in chromosome rearrangements that lower fertility and overall fitness. Rearrangements can alter the dosage of either entire chromosomes or just parts of chromosomes. Understanding the frequency and extent of rearrangements will help to explain the evolution and genome stabilization of agriculturally important allopolyploid species. Pyrosequencing is a useful tool in the study dosage changes in allopolyploids because it allows quantification of the relative contribution …

Towards A Network Of Marine Protected Areas In The South China Sea: Legal And Political Perspectives, Hai Dang Vu
Towards A Network Of Marine Protected Areas In The South China Sea: Legal And Political Perspectives, Hai Dang Vu
PhD Dissertations
The once pristine and rich marine environment of the South China Sea is degrading at an alarming rate due to the rapid socioeconomic development of the region. Despite this, and because mainly of complicated sovereignty and maritime boundary disputes, coastal States have not been able to develop effective regional cooperation to safeguard the shared marine environment. This dissertation, “Towards a Network of Marine Protected Areas in the South China Sea: Legal and Political Perspectives”, researches legal and political measures to support the development of a network of marine protected areas in the South China Sea. Such a network, if properly …

Living Rhythms: Movements Toward Health And Holiness, Jill K. Sidler Fleagle
Doctor of Ministry
Human beings can honestly profess to believe what they do not believe. (Dallas Willard) Christians seek relational health apart from spiritual health and vice versa. The problem is one of belief that it is possible to live in intimate fellowship with the Lord while in broken or unhealthy other primary relationships. Jesus addressed the problem of compartmentalized thinking when one of the Pharisees asked him to identify the most important commandment (singular) in the Law. Jesus' answer inextricably linked loving God with loving others in his response of not one but two commandments: You shall love the LORD your God …
Effects Of Nitrite And Oxygen On Angiogenesis In Vascular Networks Of The Chicken Embryo, Michael Connery
Effects Of Nitrite And Oxygen On Angiogenesis In Vascular Networks Of The Chicken Embryo, Michael Connery
Theses and Dissertations
Nitric oxide (NO) is an important mediator of angiogenesis and is primarily produced endogenously through the action of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). An alternate pathway for NO production is the conversion of nitrite to NO, which depends on the presence of hemoglobin (Hb) and hypoxic conditions. The angiogenic effects of topically applied sodium nitrite on two vascular beds in the ex ovo chicken embryonic model of angiogenesis were assessed. Gas barrier films were used to modulate local oxygen levels in the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM), a respiratory vascular network, and the area vasculosa (AV) on the yolk sac, a typical peripheral …

Effects Of Acute Or Chronic Ethanol Exposure During Adolescence On Behavioral Inhibition And Efficiency In A Modified Water Maze Task, Shawn K. Acheson, Craig Bearison, Mary-Louise Risher, Sabri H. Abdelwahab, Wilkie A. Wilson, H. Scott Swartzwelder
Biomedical Sciences
Ethanol is well known to adversely affect frontal executive functioning, which continues to develop throughout adolescence and into young adulthood. This is also a developmental window in which ethanol is misused by a significant number of adolescents. We examined the effects of acute and chronic ethanol exposure during adolescence on behavioral inhibition and efficiency using a modified water maze task. During acquisition, rats were trained to find a stable visible platform onto which they could escape. During the test phase, the stable platform was converted to a visible floating platform (providing no escape) and a new hidden platform was added …

Transcending Subjects: Hegel After Augustine, An Essay On Political Theology, Geoffrey J.D. Holsclaw
Transcending Subjects: Hegel After Augustine, An Essay On Political Theology, Geoffrey J.D. Holsclaw
Dissertations (1934 -)
From where do political reformers and radicals come who are willing and prepared to challenge the status quo? Where are people formed who are capable of initiating change within a political system? Some worry belief in transcendence closes off authentic political engagement and processes of transformation. Others think that a transcendent orientation is the only means to protect and promote a more free and just society. Some see a positive commitment to transcendence as inimical to democratic practices, while others see such a commitment as indispensable for such a project. These general issues concern transcendence, immanence, and subjectivity as they …
Nmr And Computational Characterization Of Protein Structure And Ligand Binding, Terrence Neumann
Nmr And Computational Characterization Of Protein Structure And Ligand Binding, Terrence Neumann
Dissertations (1934 -)
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques combined with computational methods such as docking and cheminformatics were used to characterize protein structure and ligand binding. The thioredoxin system of Mycobacterium tuberculosis consists of a thioredoxin reductase and at least three thioredoxins. This system is responsible for maintaining the cellular protein thiol redox state in normal state. This maintenance is important as the bacterium is engulfed by the human macrophage. Here it is bombarded by reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in an attempt to disrupt normal cellular function in part by perturbing the protein thiols. To this end, the solution structures of the …
Dynamic Balance Control During Treadmill Walking In Chronic Stroke Survivors, Eric Richard Walker
Dynamic Balance Control During Treadmill Walking In Chronic Stroke Survivors, Eric Richard Walker
Dissertations (1934 -)
Maintaining dynamic balance is an important component of walking function that is likely impaired in chronic stroke survivors, evidenced by an increased prevalence of falls. Dynamic balance control requires maintaining the center of mass (COM) within the base of support during movement. During walking, dynamic balance control is achieved largely by modifying foot placement to adjust the base of support. However, chronic stroke survivors have difficulty with both precision control of foot placement, as well as reduced control of COM movement. The objective of this dissertation was to characterize dynamic balance control strategies during walking in chronic stroke survivors. Additionally, …
Physiologically-Motivated Feature Extraction Methods For Speaker Recognition, Jianglin Wang
Physiologically-Motivated Feature Extraction Methods For Speaker Recognition, Jianglin Wang
Dissertations (1934 -)
Speaker recognition has received a great deal of attention from the speech community, and significant gains in robustness and accuracy have been obtained over the past decade. However, the features used for identification are still primarily representations of overall spectral characteristics, and thus the models are primarily phonetic in nature, differentiating speakers based on overall pronunciation patterns. This creates difficulties in terms of the amount of enrollment data and complexity of the models required to cover the phonetic space, especially in tasks such as identification where enrollment and testing data may not have similar phonetic coverage. This dissertation introduces new …

Earth’S Garden-Happiness: Nietzsche’S Geoaesthetics Of The Anthropocene, Gary Shapiro
Earth’S Garden-Happiness: Nietzsche’S Geoaesthetics Of The Anthropocene, Gary Shapiro
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This essay proposes a reading of the concept and metaphor of the garden in Nietzsche’s philosophy as a contribution to exploring his aesthetics of the human earth and, accordingly, of his idea of the Sinn der Erde. Following Zarathustra’s agreement with his animals’ repeated declaration that „the world awaits you as a garden,” after his ordeal in struggling with the thought of eternal recurrence, the essay draws on Z and other writings to explore the senses of cultivation, design, and perspective which the garden embodies. Nietzsche recognizes and endorses another dimension of the garden in his discussions of Epicurus’ …
