Diapause And Anhydrobiosis In Embryos Of Artemia Franciscana : Metabolic Depression, Lea Proteins And Water Stress., Steven Handel, Yuvraj Patil, Shumin Li, Nilay Charkraborty, Arpurva Borcar, Michael Menze, Leaf Boswell, Daniel Moore, Mehmet Toner
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Metabolic depression is typically correlated with extended survival of environmental challenge and energy-limitation in early life stages of various invertebrates and vertebrates. Diapause is an ontogenetically-programmed reduction of development and often metabolism seen in many invertebrates. When embryos of Artemia franciscana enter the state of diapause, the overall metabolic depression is estimated to be greater than 99%. These embryos also contain trehalose and express multiple isoforms of Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins, constituents often present in a number of such anhydrobiotic animals. The mRNA levels for LEA proteins are highest in diapause and post-diapause embryos that possess desiccation tolerance, but …

A Nation Of Outsiders: Industrialists, African Americans, And Veterans In East Tennesee During Reconstruction, Katharine Dahlstrand
A Nation Of Outsiders: Industrialists, African Americans, And Veterans In East Tennesee During Reconstruction, Katharine Dahlstrand
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
With the end of the American Civil War, the nation created entire populations of outsiders seeking acceptance and participation in the rebuilding of the country. Northern industrialists, African Americans, and veterans returning from military service demonstrated the failures of Reconstruction in their efforts to reconcile their position with the white southern inhabitants of East Tennessee. This region represents a unique place to explore Reconstruction and exclusionary citizenship because of its distinct relationship with both the Union and the Confederacy during the war. This thesis examines the people who lived the life of an outsider because of their background, skin color, …

"A Spirit Of Benevolence", Jennifer L. Boxen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis argues that the British Public Health movement did not begin in 1842 with Edwin Chadwick's publication, Report on the Sanitary Conditions of the Labouring Population of Great Britain (1842), or in 1848, with the subsequent passage of the Public Health Act. The beginning of the public health movement was instead the product of local initiatives such as the Manchester Board of Health, administered not by central government, but by members of the local community supported by predominantly philanthropic funding. The Manchester movement predated Chadwick's efforts by at least half a century and bore a greater resemblance to the …
Cardiac Patterns During Another Infant's Cry Sound In Neonates Of Depressed Mothers, Joseph Cotler
Cardiac Patterns During Another Infant's Cry Sound In Neonates Of Depressed Mothers, Joseph Cotler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Past research indicates there is a link between physiological responses and adaptive social responses to another individual's distress. Scholars have theorized that humans may be predisposed, both physiologically and behaviorally to responding to others, especially those who are in distress. Maternal depression has been associated with dysregulated emotional development and may possibly affect the physiological and behavioral responses of a neonate. The present research examined the relationship between neonates' physiological and behavioral responses to naturally generated (compared to artificial) stimuli of other neonates, as well as the role of maternal depression in the responses. Specifically, heart rate, heart period, and …

Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre As An Approach To Teaching English Language Learners: Teachers’ Perceptions After Professional Development And Classroom Implementation, Samantha N. Uribe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This mixed methods study investigated second through fifth grade teachers’ perceptions of Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre (CBRT) as a relevant approach for teaching English Language Learners (ELLs). Quantitative survey data were collected from 18 teachers who worked at the school with the largest population of ELLs in a large South Florida school district. The surveys investigated teachers’ current use of ESOL instructional strategies prior to participating in a CBRT professional development session as well as their ability to identify ESOL instructional strategies embedded within the approach after professional development and classroom implementation. Qualitative data were collected in the form of interviews …
Creating Mindfulness With Sensual Functional Handmade Ceramics, Alexandria. Schwartz
Creating Mindfulness With Sensual Functional Handmade Ceramics, Alexandria. Schwartz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
I create opportunities for nourishment that are physical, emotional and spiritual with my functional porcelain vessels. They reference the human body's sensual curves, dimples, and bulges, establishing the experience of eating as a metaphor for the sensual experience of human interaction. The tactility is heightened by the variety of glazes dancing around the vessels, from satiny smooth and skin-like, to wet and dripping. Handmade vessels connect the users not only more deeply to the food that provides them nourishment, but also connects them more deeply to one another, and to the maker of the work. The slow, deliberate work of …
Data Mining Heuristic-¬Based Malware Detection For Android Applications, Naser Peiravian
Data Mining Heuristic-¬Based Malware Detection For Android Applications, Naser Peiravian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The Google Android mobile phone platform is one of the dominant smartphone operating systems on the market. The open source Android platform allows developers to take full advantage of the mobile operation system, but also raises significant issues related to malicious applications (Apps). The popularity of Android platform draws attention of many developers which also attracts the attention of cybercriminals to develop different kinds of malware to be inserted into the Google Android Market or other third party markets as safe applications. In this thesis, we propose to combine permission, API (Application Program Interface) calls and function calls to build …
Development Of A Novel Assay For In Vivo Screening Of Neuromodulatory Drugs And Targeted Disruption Of Cholinergic Synaptic Transmission In Drosophila Melanogaster, Monica Mejia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Finding novel compounds that affect neuronal or muscular function is of great interest, as they can serve as potential pharmacological agents for a variety of neurological disorders. For instance, conopeptides have been developed into powerful drugs like the painkiller PrialtTM. Most conopeptides, however, have yet to be characterized, revealing the need for a rapid and straightforward screening method. We have designed a novel bioassay, which allows for unbiased screening of biological activity of compounds in vivo against numerous molecular targets on a wide variety of neurons and muscles in a rapid and straightforward manner. For this, we paired nanoinjection of …

Development Of Emotional Intelligence In At-Risk Female Adolescents, Monica. Nicoll
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that a cognitivebehavioral based psycho-educational group counseling program would increase at-risk female adolescent emotional intelligence (EI). The EI research reviewed and discussed entailed a competency building program composed of affirmations, meditation guided imagery, individual therapy sessions, group therapy, psychodrama, journaling, and parent handouts. The study was based upon theories related to the development of EI in at-risk youth, and the outcome research related to the effectiveness of emotional interventions for enhancing positive social-emotional development of at-risk adolescents. ...T his study investigated whether a group therapy process that encompasses programmatic components …
Differential Effect Of Sulindac On Normal And Malignant Retinal Cells, Arunodoy Sur
Differential Effect Of Sulindac On Normal And Malignant Retinal Cells, Arunodoy Sur
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness among the elderly population and oxidative stress induced damage of ocular tissues is thought to play an important role in the etiology of this disease. This current study is aimed at testing pharmacological preconditioning as a possible protective mechanism for retinal cells against oxidative stress induced damage. Since the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells located adjacent to the photoreceptor cells, are believed to be responsible for the initial pathology in AMD we tested our therapy on this cell type. Earlier research conducted with lung cells and in a cardiac …
Culture And Online Distance Learning, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena
Culture And Online Distance Learning, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Online distance learning (ODL) has become a global phenomenon transcending national, political, and geographical boundaries challenging distance educators to re-examine notions of teaching and learning and issues of culture inherent in cross-border delivery of online courses and programs. Rogers, Graham and Mayes (2007) note that the sheer amount of learning content being developed in the West (defined for this chapter as Eurocentric, North American, Australasian) and exported via the Internet to other countries, highlights the crucial need to explore questions of culture more thoroughly in our online course designs to provide a more equitable learning experience for all. Global universities …

In the modern discussion over whether women should be ordained as pastors, the foundational passage for both those who affirm and those who oppose women’s ordination is Gen 1–3. Those who affirm women’s ordination find in the Genesis creation accounts a statement of full equality without hierarchy of man and woman, set forth as the divinely ordained creation order. They see the rest of Scripture calling us back toward that creation ideal, and allowing for women to fill any position of authority to which God calls and gifts them. Those who oppose the ordination of women also go to Gen …
