Pcaanalyser: A 2d-Image Analysis Based Module For Effective Determination Of Prostate Cancer Progression In 3d Culture, Md Tamjidul Hoque, Louisa C. E. Windus, Carrie J. Lovitt, Vicky M. Avery

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Three-dimensional (3D) in vitro cell based assays for Prostate Cancer (PCa) research are rapidly becoming the preferred alternative to that of conventional 2D monolayer cultures. 3D assays more precisely mimic the microenvironment found in vivo, and thus are ideally suited to evaluate compounds and their suitability for progression in the drug discovery pipeline. To achieve the desired high throughput needed for most screening programs, automated quantification of 3D cultures is required. Towards this end, this paper reports on the development of a prototype analysis module for an automated high-content-analysis (HCA) system, which allows for accurate and fast investigation of …

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

For decades, researchers have investigated how events in the prenatal period impact women and their infants. These studies, particularly by researchers in the medical, neuroscience, and behavioral science fields, led to discoveries of important information regarding the prenatal events that were strongly associated with mortality (or death) and morbidity (or incidences of injury, pathology and abnormalities/anomalies, and neurobehavioral sequelae) in the neonatal and infancy periods. Among the many common findings from early research studies, two are particularly noteworthy. First, maternal and fetal risk conditions arising in the prenatal period do not do so in isolation. Sameroff and Chandler characterized this …

Heterogeneity Of Functional Properties Of Clone 66 Murine Breast Cancer Cells Expressing Various Stem Cell Phenotypes, Partha Mukhopadhyay, Tracy Farrell, Gayatri Sharma, Timothy R. Mcguire, Barbara O'Kane, J. Graham Sharp

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

INTRODUCTION:

Breast cancer grows, metastasizes and relapses from rare, therapy resistant cells with a stem cell phenotype (cancer stem cells/CSCs). However, there is a lack of studies comparing the functions of CSCs isolated using different phenotypes in order to determine if CSCs are homogeneous or heterogeneous.

METHODS:

Cells with various stem cell phenotypes were isolated by sorting from Clone 66 murine breast cancer cells that grow orthotopically in immune intact syngeneic mice. These populations were compared by in vitro functional assays for proliferation, growth, sphere and colony formation; and in vivo limiting dilution analysis of tumorigenesis.

RESULTS:

The proportion of …

Crohn’S Disease. Increasing Trend In Saudi Arabia, Ibrahim A. Al-Mofleh, Nahlah A. Azzam Nov 2013

Crohn’S Disease. Increasing Trend In Saudi Arabia, Ibrahim A. Al-Mofleh, Nahlah A. Azzam

Saudi Medical Journal

We attempted, through systematic review to explore the epidemiology and risk factors of Crohn9s disease (CD) with special attention to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). We selected articles that contained population-based, epidemiological, and clinical character studies of CD. We collected data concerned with the prevalence, demographic features, and the possible etiology of CD that might explain its emergence in KSA. The prevalence of CD in Western countries ranged between 11-43/100,000 with flawless evidence of CD prevalence emerging in previously low incidence areas like Asia. Prevalence in KSA has markedly increased over the last 3 decades. Combined ileal and colonic …

Sensing Charges Of The Ciona Intestinalis Voltage-Sensing Phosphatase, Carlos A. Villalba-Galea, Ludivine Frezza, Walter Sandtner, Francisco Bezanilla

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles

Voltage control over enzymatic activity in voltage-sensitive phosphatases (VSPs) is conferred by a voltage-sensing domain (VSD) located in the N terminus. These VSDs are constituted by four putative transmembrane segments (S1 to S4) resembling those found in voltage-gated ion channels. The putative fourth segment (S4) of the VSD contains positive residues that likely function as voltage-sensing elements. To study in detail how these residues sense the plasma membrane potential, we have focused on five arginines in the S4 segment of the Ciona intestinalis VSP (Ci-VSP). After implementing a histidine scan, here we show that four arginine-to-histidine mutants, namely R223H to …

Genocide, And Its Definition As The "Partial Elimination Of A National Group", Marcelo Ferreira Nov 2013

Genocide, And Its Definition As The "Partial Elimination Of A National Group", Marcelo Ferreira

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This paper is primarily about the crimes committed by Argentina’s last military dictatorship and whether these deserve the legal qualification of crimes against humanity or “genocide.” This question has consequences which go beyond the field of law and affect society and collective psychology through the reconstruction of historical memory. From this perspective, this paper argues that the definition of Genocide set forth in international law is directly applicable in Argentine national law. It also examines the different problems with the use of this term. Finally, it aims to reconstruct the figure of Genocide from the original interpretation of the works …

Notes And New Distributional Records Of Invasive Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) In The Southeastern United States, Joe A. Macgown, Heath Richter, Richard L. Brown

Midsouth Entomologist

The spread and establishment of alien species into new regions is becoming commonplace with increased global trade and a warming climate. Ants are among the most successful of these species due to their relatively small size and adaptability. The southeastern United States has been particularly susceptible to the introduction of alien ant species as a result of its geographic location and large number of shipping ports. A subset of these alien species is considered invasive based on their overall negative impacts to natural ecosystems and to humans. During recent years, several of these species have shown marked dispersal in the …

A Genealogy Of Genocide In Francoist Spain, Antonio Miguez Macho Nov 2013

A Genealogy Of Genocide In Francoist Spain, Antonio Miguez Macho

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The extermination that was associated with the violence of the Spanish Civil War period and the early 1940s has been studied in depth in recent decades. Until now, however, the concept of genocide has not been discussed with an eye to understanding and interpreting this violence. The hermeneutical and comparative potential of the concept is, however, unquestionable. This article aims both to contextualize the origin and development of the debates about the concept of genocide, and to show what the concept could add to the debate in the case of Spain. In particular, this paper proposes to apply the concept …

Moocs And Modern Democracies, Richard L. Pate

WCBT Faculty Publications

A discussion of the imposition of the interests of the few on the collective through a subtle but effective manner: the eventual, complete development of Massive Open Online Courses. It is this article’s premise that this development together with current marketing efficacy and the present economic goals of modern democracies, is probable to result in a shrinkage of the market place of ideas and, paradoxically, likely to result in a diminution of democracy in the world.

Health Promotions 2.0: The Future Of Wellness Programs In America, Rajiv Kumar

Center for Policy Research

In no small part because of technology, the way we live and work is being transformed. I believe that those of us who are interested in health policy can play an important role in guiding that transformation. I submit to you that unhealthy living is a social issue; that conditions such as obesity and diabetes are social diseases and that their prevalence is a social problem. If we have a social problem, then we need a social solution. I believe part of that solution can be found in the worksite health promotion and wellness programs that have taken root across …

Project Safe Flight: Making New York Safe For Migratory Birds, Kaitlyn L. Parkins, Susan B. Elbin Ph.D., Adriana Palmer, Darren Klein, Elle Barnes

Publications and Research

More than 100 species of migratory birds pass through New York City during spring and fall migrations. Located at the nexus of several migratory routes, New York City’s tall buildings and reflective glass pose a serious threat to over 100 species of migratory birds. Since 1997, NYC Audubon has led Project Safe Flight (PSF), a volunteer-based citizen-science project, with the goal of monitoring and mitigating bird collisions. We examined 16 years of PSF data, during which volunteers collected over 6,000 birds of 126 different species. The top two species, White-throated Sparrow and Common Yellowthroat, make up 23% of all collisions. …

Legal Substitution And Experiential Transformation In The Typology Of Leviticus, Part 1, Roy E. Gane Nov 2013

Legal Substitution And Experiential Transformation In The Typology Of Leviticus, Part 1, Roy E. Gane

Faculty Publications

Some Christians emphasize the idea that Christ’s sacrifice accomplished a legal substitution, but they largely overlook the effect of experiential transformation. Others do the opposite, emphasizing a change of experience resulting from Christ’s sacrifice, but downplaying the concept that Christ served as our Substitute. The present research demonstrates that in the typology of the book of Leviticus, which serves as a background to the explanation of Christ’s sacrifice in the book of Hebrews, both legal substitution and experiential transformation are clearly present and fully necessary. In part 1 of this two-part article, we will examine the evidence for legal substitution …

Disruption Of Drosophila Melanogaster Lipid Metabolism Genes Causes Tissue Overgrowth Associated With Altered Developmental Signaling., Takeshi Sasamura, Kenji Matsuno, Mark E Fortini

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Developmental patterning requires the precise interplay of numerous intercellular signaling pathways to ensure that cells are properly specified during tissue formation and organogenesis. The spatiotemporal function of many developmental pathways is strongly influenced by the biosynthesis and intracellular trafficking of signaling components. Receptors and ligands must be trafficked to the cell surface where they interact, and their subsequent endocytic internalization and endosomal trafficking is critical for both signal propagation and its down-modulation. In a forward genetic screen for mutations that alter intracellular Notch receptor trafficking in Drosophila melanogaster, we recovered mutants that disrupt genes encoding serine palmitoyltransferase and acetyl-CoA carboxylase. …
