Effects Of Electrical Stimulation And Testosterone In Translational Models Of Peripheral Nerve Injury, Gina Monaco Jan 2013

Effects Of Electrical Stimulation And Testosterone In Translational Models Of Peripheral Nerve Injury, Gina Monaco

Dissertations

As functional recovery following peripheral nerve injury is dependent upon successful regeneration and target reconnection, combinatorial treatments that enhance different regeneration events may be required for recovery from severe injuries. The neurotherapeutic effects of electrical stimulation (ES) and gonadal steroids have been demonstrated independently and in combination in extratemporal and intratemporal facial nerve injuries. The goals of the first aim were to develop a reliable intracranial facial nerve crush model and to investigate the therapeutic potential of combining ES with testosterone propionate (TP) in this most proximal injury model. Adult male rats were divided into intracranial sham-operated, intracranial crush, and …

A Study Of The Therapeutic Potential Of Af4 Mimetic Peptides, Nisha N. Barretto Jan 2013

A Study Of The Therapeutic Potential Of Af4 Mimetic Peptides, Nisha N. Barretto

Dissertations

Mixed lineage leukemias (MLL) are a group of acute and aggressive leukemias. They account for over 70% of infant leukemias, and 10% of acute adult leukemias. Pediatric ALL and therapy related MLL leukemias carry poor prognosis in spite of several advancement in the field of leukemia research. Therefore, new therapies for MLL leukemias are needed.

Majority of MLL leukemias arise due to the balanced translocations of the MLL gene. As a result of these translocations, chimeric MLL fusion proteins are expressed. The most frequently occurring MLL fusion proteins are known to aberrantly recruit the super elongation complex (SEC) resulting in …

Particulates Initiate Immune Response Via Inducing Oxidative Stress-Mediated Nlrp3 Inflammasome Activation, Zhenyu Zhong Jan 2013

Particulates Initiate Immune Response Via Inducing Oxidative Stress-Mediated Nlrp3 Inflammasome Activation, Zhenyu Zhong

Dissertations

Liposomes are lipid particles formed by self-aggregated phospholipids. They are clinically used both as delivery vectors and immune adjuvants to treat many human infectious and cancerous diseases. However, how liposomes interact with host immune system remains poorly understood. Particularly, little is known about whether an innate immune receptor exists to sense liposomes. I hypothesize that liposomes activate NLRP3 inflammasome in macrophages, which results in the release of interleukin 1β (IL-1β), a proinflammatory cytokine that plays a key role in innate and adaptive immune responses.

To test my hypothesis, I determined the ability of inducing IL-1β secretion from macrophages by differentially …

Studies Toward The Total Synthesis Of Eletefine, Kyle Rugg Jan 2013

Studies Toward The Total Synthesis Of Eletefine, Kyle Rugg

Theses

Eletefine is a natural product of the stephaoxocane family of alkaloids. It possesses an isoquinoline moiety functionalized with three methoxy groups forming an electron rich aromatic system. Eletefine also possesses a ten-membered ring with a novel bridged vinyl ether functionality, and a remote chiral alcohol, making it a conspicuous and desirable target for the synthetic organic chemist. The plant from which eletefine was first isolated (Cissampelos glaberrima) has been used in traditional medicine for the relief of symptoms from urinary tract infections and asthma. The proposed synthesis of eletefine is a convergent route which features a Sonogashira coupling and a …

Chanted Landscapes, Fernando N. Zialcita Jan 2013

Chanted Landscapes, Fernando N. Zialcita

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

Landscapes within, landscapes without. Contrary to positivist science, the boundary between our body and the world is indefinite and shifting. When I experience space, according to the phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1964: 59), I do not experience it as “an exterior wrap.” Instead, “I see space from within, I am enfolded by it… rather than the world being in front of me, it is around me.” Moreover, in our experience there is a constant interplay between the open and the closed, between the within and the without, between the here and the yonder, between inner space and outer space, writes Gaston …

Development Of Alternative Host Models To Assess Virulence Potential Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, Jeffrey Sun Jan 2013

Development Of Alternative Host Models To Assess Virulence Potential Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, Jeffrey Sun

Master's Theses and Capstones

V. parahaemolyticus infection from ingesting shellfish is a global problem and incidence rates are on the rise in the U.S. Current detection methods are ineffective due to the lack of definite pathogenic marker thus studies to elucidate virulence mechanism are crucial and impeded by the lack of an efficient high-throughput model that emulate disease. Of multiple alternative models investigates, only C. elegans was able to discern different virulence potential among V. parahaemolyticus strains. In addition, the pandemic strain had greater colonization ability when in direct competition with the pre-pandemic strain in C.elegans intestine. A transposon insertion mutant library was generated …

Population Ecology Of American Marten In New Hampshire: Impact Of Wind Farm Development In High Elevation Habitat, Alexej Peder Kelly Siren Jan 2013

Population Ecology Of American Marten In New Hampshire: Impact Of Wind Farm Development In High Elevation Habitat, Alexej Peder Kelly Siren

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study examined marten ecology relative to wind farm development using radio-marked marten, camera trapping, and snow track surveys to meet study objectives. The local population was mostly breeding adults and was considered near carrying capacity. Mortality (predation) was biased towards females and young. Seasonal home ranges were small overall, and largest during summer and when marten used more regenerating and softwood forest. Selection at the landscape scale was more pronounced than at the stand scale; regenerating forest was selected against year-round. Stand selection for mature mixed-wood and softwood occurred in winter. Disturbance from wind farm construction resulted in less …

Optimal Asylum, Shalini Ray Jan 2013

Optimal Asylum, Shalini Ray

Articles

The U.S. asylum system is noble but flawed. Scholars have long recognized that asylum is a “scarce” political resource, but U.S. law persists in distributing access to asylum based on an asylum seeker’s ability to circumvent migration controls rather than the strength of the asylum seeker’s claim for protection. To apply for asylum, an asylum seeker must either arrange to be smuggled into the United States or lie to the consulate while abroad to obtain a nonimmigrant visa. Nonimmigrant visa requirements effectively filter the pool of asylum applicants according to wealth, educational attainment, and intent not to remain in the …

Does Breastfeeding Offer Protection Against Maternal Depressive Symptomatology? A Prospective Study From Pregnancy To 2 Years After Birth, Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook, Martie G. Haselton, Christine Dunkel Schetter, Laura M. Glynn Jan 2013

Glynn

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Depression is the leading cause of disability in women (Nobel 2005) and is the most prevalent of all childbearing-related illnesses, affecting approximately 13% of women worldwide within the first 12 [...] Mothers who breastfeed typically exhibit lower levels of depressive symptomatology than mothers who do not. However, very few studies have investigated the directionality of this relationship. Of the prospective studies published, all but one focus exclusively on whether maternal depression reduces rates of subsequent breastfeeding. This study again examines this relationship, but also the reverse--that breastfeeding might predict lower levels of later depression. Using multilevel modeling, we investigated the …

A Study Of Corruption, Foreign Aid, And Economic Growth, Amanda Deerfield Jan 2013

A Study Of Corruption, Foreign Aid, And Economic Growth, Amanda Deerfield

Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration

Foreign aid donors increasingly demand that aid is used efficiently and effectively. This study examines the effect of corruption levels, measured by the Corruption Perceptions Index, within a recipient country on the levels of economic growth. A growing literature outlines the mechanisms through which corruption impedes economic growth and is summarized within. Additionally, as longevity gains may result from foreign aid but are not captured in economic growth, this study computes a variable called the Life Quality Indicator (LQI) that combines such gains with economic growth and examines corruption’s effect on LQI growth. As any windfall, foreign aid has been …

To Produce Or To Buy? Exploring Determinants Of Local Government Privatization Decisions, Zhiwei Zhang Jan 2013

To Produce Or To Buy? Exploring Determinants Of Local Government Privatization Decisions, Zhiwei Zhang

Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration

The U.S. is experiencing the worst recession since the Great Depression. All levels of government have been hit really hard, this is especially apparent at the local level since services provided at the local level are woven into people’s daily life. Thus, how to “do more with less” is more urgent than ever before. The use of privatization came to surface as a sound solution for deficit-plagued governments as it is thought to be more cost effective and outperform the public sector in most cases. This dissertation contains two empirical chapters that examine determinants of privatization and specify the conditions …

Comprehensive Investigation Of The Transcription Profiles Of Solanum Lycopersicum Treated With Two Cerato-Platanins From Botrytis Cinerea, Talitha Caudle Jan 2013

Comprehensive Investigation Of The Transcription Profiles Of Solanum Lycopersicum Treated With Two Cerato-Platanins From Botrytis Cinerea, Talitha Caudle

Dissertations

Botrytis cinerea is a severe plant pathogen that destroys more than 200 crop species worldwide. During early infection, B. cinerea secretes a large store of proteins onto the host surface, many of which cause acute necrosis, senescence, and the loss of cell wall integrity. Recently, cerato-platanin (CP) family member BCSNOD1 was found among fungal secretory products. A subsequent expression profile of B. cinerea-infected strawberry showed the early induction of BCSNOD1 and the CP homologue BCSNOD2. The function of CPs is poorly understood, although evidence suggests a role in plant-pathogen interactions. To characterize CP during B. cinerea infection, the interactions of …

The Accumulation Of The Cyanobacterial Toxin, Microcystin, In Cherry Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum) And Bush Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris) Plants, Bethany R. Lefebvre Jan 2013

The Accumulation Of The Cyanobacterial Toxin, Microcystin, In Cherry Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum) And Bush Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris) Plants, Bethany R. Lefebvre

Center for Freshwater Biology

We aimed to develop a high-sensitivity method to detect microcystin toxins in fruit tissue and to determine if irrigation with water containing toxic cyanobacteria may result in accumulation of microcystin toxins in fruit tissue and affect fruit development. In a greenhouse experiment bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum) were grown in the summer under natural light and temperature between the months of September and August. Mature plants received treatments of toxic, Microcystis aeruginosa, applied twice weekly to the soil. To simulate naturally contaminated irrigation water, the M. aeruginosa were applied to plants as a suspension of intact …
