Constructing Courts: Architecture, The Ideology Of Judging, And The Public Sphere, Allison Anna Tait
Constructing Courts: Architecture, The Ideology Of Judging, And The Public Sphere, Allison Anna Tait
Law Faculty Publications
In several countries, governments have embarked on major building expansion programs for their judiciaries. The new buildings posit the courtroom as their center and the judge as that room’s pivot. These contemporary projects follow the didactic path laid out in Medieval and Renaissance town halls, which repeatedly deployed symbolism in efforts to shape norms. Dramatic depictions then reminded judges to be loyal subjects of the state. In contrast, modern buildings narrate not only the independence of judges but also the dominion of judges, insulated from the state. The significant allocation of public funds reflects the prestige accorded to courts by …

In Vitro And In Vivo Anticancer Activity Of The Fruit Peels Of Solanum Melongena L. Against Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Maha Salama, Shahira Mohammed Ezzat, Laila Rashed
Pharmacy
Background: The fruit peels’ of Solanum melongena L. which is a common vegetable in Egypt, were investigated for biologically active metabolites in an approach to find any medicinal benefits from such waste products. Methods: The Methanol Extract of the Peels (MEP) was subjected to fractionation and purification for the isolation of its major constituents. Identification of the compounds was carried out on the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectral analysis (1H NMR, 13C NMR, COSY and HMBC). The MEP together with the isolated compounds were tested against five human cancer cell lines representing the most common types of cancer in …
Is Circumcision Legal?, Peter W, Adler
Is Circumcision Legal?, Peter W, Adler
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
An important, divisive, and unanswered question of American law - and indeed of international law - is whether it is legal to circumcise healthy boys. American medical association and experts assert that circumcision is a common, safe, and relatively painlesss procedure with many medical benefits that exceed the risks. They argue that insurance should pay for it. Some religious organizations argue that circumcision is a sacred religious ritual. In any event, proponents claim that parents have a general and religious right to make the circumcision decision. They can point to the fact that no physician has ever been held liable …
Religious Freedom Legislation In The 2013 Virginia General Assembly, Ellis M. West
Religious Freedom Legislation In The 2013 Virginia General Assembly, Ellis M. West
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
This article consists of the following sections: Section one presents the content of the proposed amendment and explains the ways in which it is unclear, redundant, and otherwise poorly written. Section two addresses the issue of whether the provisions intended to protect religious expression, including prayer, are necessary and can solve the problems they are intended to solve. It also identifies the crucial challenge in cases involving religious expression - namely, determining correctly whether it is the government or a private individual or group that is expressing or promoting a religious belief or practice. This determination must be made because …

Connecting Inwardly To Beethoven: Ted Hughes And The Role Of The Artist As Quest Hero, David Charles Heldsinger
Connecting Inwardly To Beethoven: Ted Hughes And The Role Of The Artist As Quest Hero, David Charles Heldsinger
Theses
Ted Hughes served as English Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death in 1998. In an insightful interview in 1970, Hughes said he connected ‘inwardly’1 to William Blake and Ludwig van Beethoven and that if he ‘could dig to the bottom’ of his ‘strata, maybe their names and works would be the deepest traces’.2 Blake and Beethoven lived and worked at a pivotal moment in history as the Romantic Movement emerged in the late 18th century. This Movement has had a significant and long lasting effect on art, culture, philosophy and politics. Shortly before his death, Hughes reiterated …

Probiotic Strains For Shellfish Aquaculture: Protection Of Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica, Larvae And Juveniles Againsl Bacterial Challenge, Murni Karim, Wenjing Zhao, David C. Rowley, David R. Nelson, Marta Gomez-Chiarri
Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications
Bacterial pathogens, including several Vibrio spp. and Roseovarius crassostreae, cause severe mortality of larval and juvenile eastern oysters. The introduction of beneficial bacterial isolates in oyster hatcheries and nurseries for the biocontrol of bacterial diseases is a good alternative to the use of antibiotics. The goal of this study was to screen and characterize marine bacterial isolates as potential agents to prevent larval and juvenile mortality by the oyster pathogens Vibrio tubiashii and R. crassostreae. Screening of bacterial isolates from Rhode Island marine organisms and environment using agar-based assay methods for detection of antimicrobial activity against oyster pathogens led …
The Grapes Of Wrath: Encouraging Fruitful Collaborations Between Local Governments And Farm Wineries In The Commonwealth, Andrew E. Tarne
The Grapes Of Wrath: Encouraging Fruitful Collaborations Between Local Governments And Farm Wineries In The Commonwealth, Andrew E. Tarne
Law Student Publications
While there is fairly substantial federal regulation in the field of wine law, this essay's scope will be limited to the interplay of Virginia's state and local laws that affect wineries close to home. Within that scope, this essay's purpose is threefold. First, it will highlight the key legislation and ordinances that affect farm wineries. Second, it will discuss the interplay between state and local level regulations, concluding that the General Assembly has intended to retain near exclusive regulatory powers over farm wineries. Third, it will briefly analyze the impact of the wine industry on three Virginia counties, concluding that …

La Quête D'Identité À Travers La Quête De L'Autre Dans Le Cinéma De Cédric Klapisch, Jade Marie Mathieu
La Quête D'Identité À Travers La Quête De L'Autre Dans Le Cinéma De Cédric Klapisch, Jade Marie Mathieu
Theses and Dissertations
Immunoprotection Versus Immunopathogenesis Associated With Aspergillus Fumigatus Exposure, Lauren Lilly
Immunoprotection Versus Immunopathogenesis Associated With Aspergillus Fumigatus Exposure, Lauren Lilly
All ETDs from UAB
Opportunistic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus can cause a wide range of disorders depending on the immunological state of the host. In individuals lacking a robust innate immune response, invasive aspergillosis (IA) within the lungs can occur. In contrast, patients with a hyperreactive immune response can develop an allergic disorder called Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis (ABPA). Using mouse models, we investigated contributing factors of host defense in IA and fungal asthma induced by Aspergillus fumigatus. The connection between fungi and the development of allergic disease has long been of interest. Previously, we have shown that beta-glucan receptor, dectin-1, is required for clearance during …

The Effect Of Teaching Biology Concepts With Animations Compared To Static Cartoons On Content Retention, Rebecca Adams Polk
LSU Master's Theses
This study explores the effect of animations versus static cartoons on students’ content retention in a high school biology classroom. Students were pre-tested prior to the introduction of content in three units of study: cellular transport, protein synthesis, and mitosis. After instruction on the topic via PowerPoint presentations, students were randomly assigned to either the test group or experimental group for each unit. The control group was removed from the room and given a series of static cartoons with captions to view. The experimental group viewed an animation on the topic, accompanied by teacher narration, which consisted of the captions …
The Feasibility Of Using Vanadium And Nickel To Track Oil Spills In Coastal Environments, Sean Patrick Kenny
The Feasibility Of Using Vanadium And Nickel To Track Oil Spills In Coastal Environments, Sean Patrick Kenny
LSU Master's Theses
Crude oil has been increasing in world demand over the past century. It is known that oil is resistant to weathering processes and if spilled, can cause serious environmental damage to an area, on land or sea. A complementary approach to current methods of tracking oil and identifying spill-impacted sediments may be to measure trace metals associated with crude oil. Trace metals, such a vanadium (V) and nickel (Ni) are known to be elevated in concentration in some oil sources, but little work has been done on this topic. This research explored less expensive and time-consuming methods to track or …
Computed Tomographic Assessment Of Canine Arytenoid Lateralization, James Richard Wignall
Computed Tomographic Assessment Of Canine Arytenoid Lateralization, James Richard Wignall
LSU Master's Theses
Unilateral arytenoid lateralization is a commonly performed surgical treatment for laryngeal paralysis in dogs. It involves fixing the moveable arytenoid cartilage to the thyroid (TAL) or cricoid (CAL) cartilage or both (CTAL). This increases the area of the rima glottidis (RGA), to allow reduced airway pressure and laryngeal resistance in vitro and ameliorates clinical signs in vivo. It may also increase the patient’s predisposition for aspiration pneumonia, which occurs in around 20% of clinical patients. No surgical technique has been correlated with clinical outcome or risk of aspiration pneumonia. Objective analysis of the effects of surgery on the three dimensional …
Determination Of Cane Berry Pomaces Benefits Through In Vitro Model For Human Colonic Fermentation, M'Famara Goita
Determination Of Cane Berry Pomaces Benefits Through In Vitro Model For Human Colonic Fermentation, M'Famara Goita
LSU Master's Theses
Cane berry pomaces have traditionally been considered waste products with little or no value. Yet these pomaces’ high levels of phenolic compounds such as anthocyanins, is a good source of dietary fiber. Because the pomaces are low in sugar and rich in fiber and dietary antioxidants, they have potential as food ingredients for the health food market. The pomace delivers health benefits associated with high fiber and the antioxidant polyphenolic compounds associated with whole fruits and juices without the high sugar content. Some dietary fibers are substrates for anaerobic fermentation by the microbiome in the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The …
Intramural Electrical Uncoupling During Long-Duration Ventricular Fibrillation In Rabbit, Trenika A. Madden
Intramural Electrical Uncoupling During Long-Duration Ventricular Fibrillation In Rabbit, Trenika A. Madden
All ETDs from UAB
Ventricular fibrillation is a lethal cardiac arrhythmia which alters electrophysiological properties of the myocardium while concurrently inducing global ischemia and is associated with high mortality rates. Studies on the organization of long-duration ventricular fibrillation (LDVF) have shown that an endocardial to epicardial (i.e. transmural) activation rate gradient exists during ventricular fibrillation in canine and human myocardium; however, the underlying mechanism is unknown. This study tested the hypothesis that the activation rate gradient reflects heterogeneous changes in tissue electrical resistivity resulting in differential transmural electrical uncoupling of the ventricular myocardium. LDVF (>5min) was electrically induced in anesthetized, open-chest rabbits using …

Rhodopsin Trafficking And Retinal Function, Nicholas Joseph Reish
Rhodopsin Trafficking And Retinal Function, Nicholas Joseph Reish
All ETDs from UAB
The health and maintenance of rod photoreceptors depends on the high-fidelity vectorial transport of rhodopsin from its site of synthesis in the inner segment to its final resting place in the outer segment disks. Multiple molecular interactions play a role in this process, including the interaction of the small GTPase rab11a with rhodopsin that was first described in vertebrates in amphibians. We found that the interaction of the small GTPase rab11a and rhodopsin is conserved in mammalian retina. This interaction is direct, is abrogated by human disease-causing truncation mutations in rhodopsin, and does not depend on the nucleotide binding status …
A Collaborative Social Computing Model For Transdisciplinary Problem Solving, Jerry Allen Higgs
A Collaborative Social Computing Model For Transdisciplinary Problem Solving, Jerry Allen Higgs
All ETDs from UAB
The capacity to address and solve today's complex problems is becoming exceedingly more difficult because of the transdisciplinary nature of our current system of knowledge. Innovative solutions are no longer the by-products of centralized offices and laboratories. In fact, crafting solutions for truly complex problems requires a collaborative sharing of knowledge that transcends the artificial boundaries of departmentalized offices and research facilities. For decades, segmented information systems built on distributed platforms have kept transdisciplinary problem solving fragmented, without the ability to effectively share knowledge or data. This segmentation has stifled the progress of research reaching beyond the traditional boundaries of …

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor (University of Nebraska at Lincoln, 2011), the majority of the Southeastern states are classified as being in a state of moderate, severe, extreme, and or exceptional drought. The northern part of Alabama including Jefferson County falls into the "abnormal" drought category. Due to the prevailing drought conditions in the Southeastern U.S. in the recent past, it is necessary to conserve water resources by using them as efficiently and responsibly as possible. The increasing population, socioeconomic developments, and industrialization could have significant impacts on the way we consume water today. There will be an imbalance …

Predictors Of Falls Among Older Adults, Jaspreet Kaur
All ETDs from UAB
With an aging population, more attention has to be focused on the needs of older adults, especially regarding medical and psychological concerns. Thirty-three percent of older adults fall each year, and falling is one of the leading causes of accidental death nationwide. The objective of this study was to identify predictors of falls among sedentary community-dwelling older adults (age 65+). The study employed a secondary data analysis of measures collected in the Physical and Cognitive Exercise Study (PACES). Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate whether individual or composite measures of vision, cognition, and physical functioning were associated with an …
Gabaergic Dysfunction In Huntington Disease, Sarah Elizabeth Dougherty
Gabaergic Dysfunction In Huntington Disease, Sarah Elizabeth Dougherty
All ETDs from UAB
GABAergic neurons are responsible for regulation of neuronal signaling through inhibition. Alterations in the delicate balance of excitation and inhibition have been observed in many neurological disorders, including neurodegenerative diseases. Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by motor, psychiatric, and cognitive disturbances. As the hallmark movement pathology of HD is hyperkinesis it is intriguing to postulate that alterations in inhibition, and by extension within GABAergic cell networks, could be part of the pathogenesis of this disorder. In order to elucidate the role of GABAergic cell populations in HD we have used behavioral paradigms, molecular …

Forensic Bibliography: Reconstructing The Library Of George Wythe, Linda K. Tesar
Forensic Bibliography: Reconstructing The Library Of George Wythe, Linda K. Tesar
Library Staff Publications
The Wolf Law Library at the College of William and Mary initiated a project to re-create the library of George Wythe, the founding father of American legal education. A relatively small number of Wythe’s books are still extant today; for some volumes, there is strong documentary evidence to prove conclusively he owned specific editions of particular titles. Additionally, four bibliographies with varying levels of substantiating information provide insight into the contents of Wythe’s library. Examination of these sources launched an excursion into bibliographic history and rare book collecting that illuminates the difficulties in attempting to establish the exact editions contained …

Insulin Secretagogue Activity Of Ellagic Acid-Rich Muscadine (Vitis Rotundifolia) And Indian Gooseberry (Emblica Officinalis) Extracts On Pancreatic Beta Cells, Srikanth Earpina
LSU Master's Theses
Diabetes is an inflammatory disease associated with hyperglycemia. Chronic exposure of pancreatic â-cells to glucolipotoxicity stimulates a low-grade inflammation associated with the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1â (IL-1â). Increased levels of IL-1â can initially lead to decreased insulin secretion and finally â-cell death. Ellagic acid and quercetin have been reported to be anti-inflammatory in several studies. Vitis rotundifolia (muscadine) or Emblica officinalis (amla) are good sources of ellagic acid and quercetin. Ellagic acid or quercetin is bioavailable as is or are metabolized into bioavailable urolithins or isorhamnetin, respectively. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect …
