Yemen, Sheila Carapico Jan 2013

Yemen, Sheila Carapico

Political Science Faculty Publications

In February 2011, Tawakkol Karman stood on a stage outside Sanaa University. A microphone in one hand and the other clenched defiantly above her head, reading from a list of demands, she led tens of thousands of cheering, flag-waving demonstrators in calls for peaceful political change. She was to become not so much the leader as the figurehead of Yemen's uprising. On other days and in other cities, other citizens led the chants: men and women and sometimes, for effect, little children. These mass public performances enacted a veritable civic revolution in a poverty-stricken country where previous activist surges never …

Politics And Philosophy In Aristotle's Critique Of Plato's Laws, Kevin M. Cherry Jan 2013

Politics And Philosophy In Aristotle's Critique Of Plato's Laws, Kevin M. Cherry

Political Science Faculty Publications

Whether on matters of politics or physics, Aristotle's criticism of his predecessors is not generally considered a model of charitable interpretation. He seems to prefer, as Christopher Rowe puts it, "polemic over accuracy" (2003, 90). His criticism of the Laws is particularly puzzling: It is much shorter than his discussion of the Republic and raises primarily technical objections of questionable validity. Indeed, some well-known commentators have concluded the criticisms, as we have them in the Politics, were made of an earlier draft of the Laws and that Plato, in light of these criticisms, revised the final version. I hope …

Playing Games: Governmental Influence And Individual Assertion In Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games" Series, Benjamin Jon Geistfeld Jan 2013

Playing Games: Governmental Influence And Individual Assertion In Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games" Series, Benjamin Jon Geistfeld

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This thesis explores the relationship between The Hunger Games protagonist Katniss Everdeen and the two governments, one led by President Snow and the other led by President Coin, with which she interacts. In my first chapter, I argue that Presidents Snow and Coin both try to influence Katniss to follow their own agendas by dictating certain social conditions to her through laws, educational curricula, and state-sponsored industries. Each President carefully designs these conditions to support their own agendas rather than the agendas of the citizens they govern. I use Louis Althusser's theory of ideology and ideological state apparatuses and Michel …

After The Berger Blanc: A Comparative Approach To The Utilitarian Regulation Of Municipal Animal Control, Jodi Lazare Jan 2013

After The Berger Blanc: A Comparative Approach To The Utilitarian Regulation Of Municipal Animal Control, Jodi Lazare

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

In April 2011, Radio-Canada aired an investigative report exposing the cruel treatment of domestic animals by workers at one of Montreal's largest animal shelters. A private business, the Berger Blanc held the majority of municipal contracts for animal control services throughout Montreal. Following the widely-watched exposé, the regulation of domestic animal welfare rose to the top of the agenda both at Montreal's City Hall and Quebec's National Assembly, as citizens demanded a response to the jarring images of cruelty and neglect. The province responded, adopting a regulation to strengthen the legal protection of dogs and cats under Quebec's Animal Health …

Factors Influencing Local Recruitment In Tree Swallows, Tachycineta Bicolor, Danielle M. Andrews Jan 2013

Factors Influencing Local Recruitment In Tree Swallows, Tachycineta Bicolor, Danielle M. Andrews

Honors Projects

We extensively monitored the nests of Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) at 100 nest boxes every day during each breeding season from 1992 to 2006. The birds were banded and recorded as a means to track those who returned as recruits. We identified 166 recruits; the sex ratio of recruits was not significantly different from 50:50 and the distribution of recruits between nests was no different than expected by chance. We calculated a local recruitment rate of 4.79% when considering all nestlings (N=3463). We found a significant difference between brood size at hatching categories (1-3, 4, 5, 6, 7-8) and whether …

The Effects Of Social Rank On Shame And Guilt, Alexandra Bohaska Jan 2013

The Effects Of Social Rank On Shame And Guilt, Alexandra Bohaska

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The differentiation of shame and guilt is not widely discussed. The reason why some people feel shame while others feel guilt is also not universally understood. Various theories have examined cultural influences and how individuals attribute the outcome of various situations. This paper discusses past theories of the reasons behind shame and guilt and conducts a study that examines how social rank, or lack thereof, could affect a person's emotional response. It was predicted that when the participants, consisting of college undergraduates and residents of a private community, are primed towards feelings of superordination or equality, via vignettes, they would …

Puzzling About State Excuses As An Instance Of Group Excuses, François Tanguay-Renaud Jan 2013

Puzzling About State Excuses As An Instance Of Group Excuses, François Tanguay-Renaud

Articles & Book Chapters

Can the state, as opposed co its individual human members in their personal capacity, intelligibly seek to avoid blame for unjustified wrongdoing by invoking duress, provocation, a reasonable mistake in justification, or other types of excuses? Insofar as it can, should such claims ever be given moral and legal recognition? It is certainly not uncommon to encounter offhand statements to the effect that at least some state excuses are both conceivable and legitimate.1 However, the issue has yet to receive the sustained philosophical attention it deserves. Few theorists speak to it specifically, and those who do typically discard rather rashly …

Is The Reporting Timeliness Gap For Avian Flu And H1n1 Outbreaks In Global Health Surveillance Systems Associated With Country Transparency?, Feng-Jen Tsai, Eva Tseng, Chang-Chuan Chan, Hiko Tamashiro, Sandrine Motamed, André C Rougemont

Division of Internal Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations

BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the length of time elapsed between reports of the same incidents related to avian flu and H1N1 outbreaks published by the WHO and ProMED-mail, the two major global health surveillance systems, before and after the amendment of the International Health Regulations in 2005 (IHR 2005) and to explore the association between country transparency and this timeliness gap.

METHODS: We recorded the initial release dates of each report related to avian flu or H1N1 listed on the WHO Disease Outbreak News site and the matching outbreak report from ProMED-mail, a non-governmental program for monitoring emerging …

Multifunctional Hydroxyapatite And Poly(D,L-Lactide-Co-Glycolide) Nanoparticles For The Local Delivery Of Cholecalciferol, Nenad Ignjatović, Vuk Uskoković, Zorica Ajduković, Dragan Uskoković

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Cholecalciferol, vitamin D3, plays an important role in bone metabolism by regulating extracellular levels of calcium. Presented here is a study on the effects of the local delivery of cholecalciferol (D3) using nanoparticulate carriers composed of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). Multifunctional nanoparticulate HAp-based powders were prepared for the purpose of: (a) either fast or sustained, local delivery of cholecalciferol, and (b) the secondary, osteoconductive and defect-filling effect of the carrier itself. Two types of HAp-based powders with particles of narrowly dispersed sizes in the nano range were prepared and tested in this study: HAp nanoparticles as direct cholecalciferol delivery …

Judging Genocide In Rwanda: Lay Judges And Mass Prosecutions In Local Courts, Chakravarty Chakravarty Jan 2013

Judging Genocide In Rwanda: Lay Judges And Mass Prosecutions In Local Courts, Chakravarty Chakravarty

Studio for Law and Culture

The motivations, attitudes and behaviors of the quarter million lay judges who ran the mass prosecutions for genocide is a curiously under-studied topic in the growing literature on the local gacaca courts in Rwanda. The state would have failed to prosecute thousands of citizens without the cooperation of these judges. Yet this post-genocide Tutsi-dominated authoritarian state allowed these courts to run more or less independently and left this all-important task in the hands of lay judges. The judges too volunteered to work without compensation. Who were the judges? Why did they agree to take on the social and economic risks …

“Willing Victims” And “Innocence Unguarded”?: Ambiguous Volition, Perishable Promises, And Disavowed Consent In Fielding’S Amelia, Nicole M. Wright Jan 2013

“Willing Victims” And “Innocence Unguarded”?: Ambiguous Volition, Perishable Promises, And Disavowed Consent In Fielding’S Amelia, Nicole M. Wright

Studio for Law and Culture

This paper examines Henry Fielding’s novel Amelia (1751) as a prescient literary contemplation of the temporality of consent. The novel’s preoccupation with impulsive consent and fluctuations of intention is set against a background of shifting legal standards concerning the imperishability of consent. Characters feel bound by norms discouraging the retraction of consent. Amelia’s private sexual episodes prepare the reader to deliberate over crises of accountability in non-sexual public settings (the criminal justice system, the gambling den, Vauxhall, and elsewhere). Modern-day legislation and university sexual codes enshrining the stepwise gauging of consent derive from such early reappraisals of the duration of …

Can Moving Pictures Speak? Silent Film, Free Speech, And Social Science In Early 20th Century Law, Jennifer Petersen Jan 2013

Can Moving Pictures Speak? Silent Film, Free Speech, And Social Science In Early 20th Century Law, Jennifer Petersen

Studio for Law and Culture

When the Supreme Court was first confronted with a First Amendment case involving film, it was confronted with a difficult and fascinating question: were silent films speech? The decision in the case, Mutual v. Ohio (1915), famously answered no. The decision is usually understood to be part of a tradition of interpretations of the First Amendment as applying primarily to political opinion; in this reading, film was not protected because it was entertainment and/or commerce. However, Mutual also contains a set of arguments about the nature of film as more akin to action than to speech — arguments embedded in …

“You Will See My Family Became So American”: Immigration, Racial Visibility, And Specular Citizenship, Sherally Munshi Jan 2013

“You Will See My Family Became So American”: Immigration, Racial Visibility, And Specular Citizenship, Sherally Munshi

Studio for Law and Culture

This paper explores the vexed relationship between legal form and personhood that arises in the context of Indian immigration and naturalization in the early twentieth century. In 1932, Dinshah P. Ghadiali received notice that the government was seeking to cancel his citizenship on grounds of “racial ineligibility.” In his self-published writing about the trial, Ghadiali wondered whether he been singled out for persecution by professional rivals. In fact, he had been caught in a larger campaign to denaturalize citizens of Indian origin after the Supreme Court, in United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind (1923), determined that “Hindus” were racially ineligible …

Fetal Deaths Related To Congenital Anomalies In The State Of Ohio: 2006-2010, Ashley M. Rhoby Jan 2013

Fetal Deaths Related To Congenital Anomalies In The State Of Ohio: 2006-2010, Ashley M. Rhoby

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

This report analyzes the 2006-2010 fetal death files for the state of Ohio by a variety of maternal and fetal characteristics. The issue of fetal deaths related to congenital anomalies is a growing concern as very few epidemiologic studies have been conducted in order to assess the correlation between maternal factors and the development of congenital anomalies. For this study, maternal demographics, the presence of a congenital anomaly, and maternal risks towards the pregnancy were analyzed. A Chi-Square analysis to test for variance between fetal deaths with and without the presence of a congenital anomaly was conducted. The results showed …

Parasites In Paraguay: An Analysis Of The Presentation And Management Of Intestinal Parasites By Short-Term Medical Mission Volunteers In Paraguay, Robert A. Eick

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Introduction. International medical aid in the form of short-term medical missions (STTMs) receives more than $250 million in annual donations. Needs assessments prior to the STTM and outcomes analysis for improvement are often lacking. Objective. Describe the patient population attended to during a one-week STTM in Paraguay, South America, while examining “parasites” as a presenting concern, as a diagnosis by the providers, and the prescription of antiparasitic treatment. This analysis identified variance in intestinal parasite presentation and management by age, gender, and location. The administration frequency of antiparasitic medication was considered as prophylactic versus disease-treatment based.

Methods. This study was …

Stop Talking: Indigenous Ways Of Teaching And Learning And Difficult Dialogues In Higher Education, Larry Merculieff, Libby Roderick

Books

It was the end of spring semester here in Anchorage, Alaska. The snow was gone in all but the shadiest of places, but the trees were not yet in leaf, and a brown dust blew lightly over the still winter-flattened earth. It was a season of endings and beginnings. Finals were over, grades turned in, robes donned, commencement hats flung. Summer was on its way. Just before the faculty went off contract and scattered to the mid-May winds, we held the last meeting of our Ford Foundation-sponsored Difficult Dialogues project. We’d been working together for the past two years on …

Nitrogen Excretion From Beef Cattle For 6 Cover Crop Mixes As Estimated By A Nutritional Model, E.E. Grings, A. Sackey, M. Hansen, V. Owens, D. Beck, P. Sexton

South Dakota Beef Report, 2013

Excretion of nitrogen (N) from cattle within crop‐livestock systems is an important component of nutrient cycling, but measuring fecal and urinary N excretion in grazing cattle is a difficult and time consuming task. Nutritional models are available to estimate feed utilization and have been used to predict N excretion in grazing cattle. Using the Large Ruminant Nutrition Model, we predicted N losses from mature pregnant beef cows and growing beef heifers from compositional analysis of cover crop mixes grown in central South Dakota. All of the mixes used contained crude protein (CP) concentrations greater than cattle requirements. Estimates of both …
