Conservative Principles For Environmental Reform,, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2013

Conservative Principles For Environmental Reform,, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

Major environmental policy reform is long overdue. The current regulatory architecture was erected in the 1970s. Since then meaningful reforms have been few and far between. A few reforms and regulatory expansions were adopted in the 1980s, and Congress enacted significant reforms to the Clean Air Act in 1990. Only the most minor environmental bills have been enacted since then.

Coping With Water Scarcity, Risk & Uncertainty: Resilience & Hope, G. Tracy Mehan Iii Jan 2013

Coping With Water Scarcity, Risk & Uncertainty: Resilience & Hope, G. Tracy Mehan Iii

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

It is most appropriate that we gather here in Texas, a state blessed with a vibrant economy and robust population growth, but still coming to terms with a searing drought. Here we get a glimpse of the daunting circumstances impacting water supply and security throughout the United States. This is a good time and place to consider how we often undervalue a resource and commodity that is so important in our lives. In this way we can secure our future water supplies while coping with all the risks, challenges and opportunities this entails.

"Dropping" The Migratory Bird Treaty Act: The Negative Effects Of The Mbta On Property Rights And Human Health, Sabita Maharaj

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Federal law essentially handcuffs residents from protecting their health and their children’s health and severely restricts what they can do to protect their property from MBTA-protected birds. The usefulness of these laws is no longer justifiable. While it is necessary for human enjoyment and the balance of the ecosystem to protect animals, protection should not come at the expense of human health and property use and enjoyment.

First Record Of Pond Sliders (Trachemys Scripta Scripta And T. S. Elegans) At Fredericksburg, Virginia With Observations On Population Size, Age And Growth, Werner Wieland, Yoshinori Takeda

Virginia Journal of Science

We conducted a turtle mark-recapture program within a 160 m stretch of the Fredericksburg Canal with standard, baited hoop nets from May to July 2012 to determine if a population of the introduced Red-eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) and Yellow-bellied Slider (Trachemys s. scripta) are established in this area. We captured and marked nine Red-eared Sliders (1 male, 8 females) and estimated a population size of 23 individuals. Most were reproductively mature. The established population in the canal may be a source of introduction into the Rappahannock River.

Systematic Ichthyofaunal Surveys In Urban And Non-Urban Watersheds, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes, Amanda Schutt, Suzy Short

Virginia Journal of Science

Objectives were to model fish species richness relative to natural and anthropogenic variables in Quantico Creek, a forested undisturbed stream environment, and Cameron Run, a highly disturbed urban stream environment in the lower Piedmont-Fall Line region of the Potomac River watershed. Species richness in all stream orders (e.g. avg. range=2.5-9.65 in 1st-3rd orders) of Quantico Creek were significantly higher than those (e.g. avg. range=2.1- 7.6 in 1st -4th orders) of Cameron Run. Fish species richness in Quantico Creek watershed can be modeled by eight factors: season, stream order, elevation, river km, stream width and depth, watershed size, and percent of …

Hippocampal Neurogenesis And The Brain Repair Response To Brief Stereotaxic Insertion Of A Microneedle, Shijie Song, Shuojing Song, Chuanhai Cao, Xiaoyang Lin, Kunyu Li, Vasyl Sava, Juan Sanchez-Ramos

Neurology Faculty Publications

We tested the hypothesis that transient microinjury to the brain elicits cellular and humoral responses that stimulate hippocampal neurogenesis. Brief stereotaxic insertion and removal of a microneedle into the right hippocampus resulted in (a) significantly increased expression of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), the chemokine MIP-1a, and the proinflammatory cytokine IL12p40; (b) pronounced activation of microglia and astrocytes; and (c) increase in hippocampal neurogenesis. This study describes immediate and early humoral and cellular mechanisms of the brain’s response to microinjury that will be useful for the investigation of potential neuroprotective and deleterious effects of deep brain stimulation in various neuropsychiatric disorders.

Stewardship Of The Biosphere In The Urban Era, Michail Fragkias Jan 2013

Stewardship Of The Biosphere In The Urban Era, Michail Fragkias

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We are entering a new urban era in which the ecology of the planet as a whole is increasingly influenced by human activities (Ellis 2011; Steffen et al. 2011a, b; Folke et al. 2011). Cities have become a central nexus of the relationship between people and nature, both as crucial centres of demand of ecosystem services, and as sources of environmental impacts. Approximately 60 % of the urban land present in 2030 is forecast to be built in the period 2000–2030 (Chap. 21). Urbanization therefore presents challenges but also opportunities. In the next two to three decades, we have unprecedented …

Sitting next to a stranger on a plane who becomes a business partner? Stumbling onto an article in a journal or newspaper that helps tackle a nagging problem? Creating a new drug by accident?

Last Words: An Analysis Of Adolescent Suicide Through Note Of Intent Assessment, Kyle Schwab Jan 2013

Last Words: An Analysis Of Adolescent Suicide Through Note Of Intent Assessment, Kyle Schwab

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Theses

Suicide is an unfortunate act that takes place every single day at increasingly disturbing rates. Due to suicide’s extreme prevalence in many societies across the globe, large amounts of time, energy, and resources have been expended towards funding administrative and academic attempts to comprehend and explain suicide. Perhaps the most confusing and appalling aspect of suicide involves the suicidal death of an adolescent youth. While many researchers in academia have identified the most common risk factors and motivations for suicidal adults, little comparative understanding has been reached regarding adolescent suicide. The purpose of this study is to contribute to this …

The Role Of Forage Availability On Diet Choice And Body Condition In American Beavers (Castor Canadensis), William J. Severud, Steve K. Windels, Jerrold L. Belant, John G. Bruggink

United States National Park Service: Publications

Forage availability can affect body condition and reproduction in wildlife.Weused terrestrial and aquatic vegetation sampling, stable isotope analysis, and livetrapping to investigate the influence of estimated forage biomass on diet, body condition, and reproduction in American beavers (Castor canadensis) in the Namakan Reservoir, Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota, USA, May 2008–September 2009. Available terrestrial and emergent aquatic forage varied greatly among territories, but floating leaf aquatic forage was low in abundance in all territories. Variation in estimated biomass of available emergent and terrestrial vegetation did not explain variation in respective assimilated diets, but variation in floating leaf vegetation explained …

Plant Community Composition And Structure Monitoring For Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Isabel W. Ashton, Stephen K. Wilson, Dan Swanson, Michael Prowatzke, Phil Graeve

United States National Park Service: Publications

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument (AGFO) plays a vital role in protecting and managing some of the last remnants of native mixed-grass prairie in the region. The Northern Great Plains Inventory & Monitoring Network (NGPN) and Fire Ecology Program (FireEP) surveyed 12 long-term monitoring plots in Agate Fossil Beds National Monument in 2012 as part of an effort to better understand the condition of plant communities in the park. We measured plant diversity and cover, looked for the presence of exotic species that may be newly invading the park, and evaluated the amount of human and natural disturbance at all …

Food Limitation As A Potentially Emerging Contributor To The Asian Vulture Crisis, Fakhar -I- Abbas, Thomas P. Rooney, Jibran Haider, Afsar Mian Jan 2013

Food Limitation As A Potentially Emerging Contributor To The Asian Vulture Crisis, Fakhar -I- Abbas, Thomas P. Rooney, Jibran Haider, Afsar Mian

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

It was believed that the reason for decline in Asian vulture population is the drug, Diclofenac sodium (DFS), used in livestock. Even after declaring the DFS use banned by the government, apparent decrease in the population of vultures was reported. Alternate hypothesis was suggested that food limitation may be a cause of Asian vulture crisis in Pakistan. Very recent shifts in livestock utilization observed in Pakistan may present a significant barrier to vulture recovery. Increased livestock utilization is translated to fewer carcasses. Since 2005, no livestock carcasses were found in 1650 km transect in the habitat of vultures. Carcasses recorded …

Supervisory Control State Diagrams To Depict Autonomous Activity, Michael Patzek, Clayton Rothwell, George Bearden, Benjamin Ausdenmoore, Allen Rowe

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2013

As capabilities of autonomous systems expand, traditional geospatial information displays used for supervisory control will likely need to be augmented with more explicit information on higherorder autonomous activities, such as goal-directed task selection, situation assessment, decisionmaking, and planning. We present a supervisory control interface for higher-order autonomy based on finite state machine diagrams called Layered Pattern Recognizable Interfaces for State Machines (L-PRISM). L-PRISM is a hierarchically arranged set of nested state diagrams coupled with a temporal control and payload viewer. The mission goals and tasks are at the top-most layer and sub-tasks and states at lower layers, providing varying levels …

Modeling Sediment Accumulation In North American Playa Wetlands In Response To Climate Change, 1940–2100, Lucy Burris, Susan K. Skagen Jan 2013

Modeling Sediment Accumulation In North American Playa Wetlands In Response To Climate Change, 1940–2100, Lucy Burris, Susan K. Skagen

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Playa wetlands on the west-central Great Plains of North America are vulnerable to sediment infilling from upland agriculture, putting at risk several important ecosystem services as well as essential habitats and food resources of diverse wetland-dependent biota. Climate predictions for this semi-arid area indicate reduced precipitation which may alter rates of erosion, runoff, and sedimentation of playas. We forecasted erosion rates, sediment depths, and resultant playa wetland depths across the west-central Great Plains and examined the relative roles of land use context and projected changes in precipitation in the sedimentation process. We estimated erosion with the Revised Universal Soil Loss …

Tracking Transplanted Bone Marrow Stem Cells And Their Effects In The Rat Mcao Stroke Model., Gregory V Goldmacher, Rena Nasser, Daniel Y Lee, Sargon Yigit, Robert Rosenwasser, Lorraine Iacovitti

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

In this study, rat bone marrow stromal stem cells (BMSCs) were tracked after IV administration to rats with experimental stroke caused by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). In addition, the effects of BMSC treatment on blood cell composition, brain glia and sensorimotor behavior was studied and compared to that which occurred spontaneously during the normal recovery process after stroke. We found that the vast majority of radiolabeled or fluorescently labeled BMSCs traveled to and remained in peripheral organs (lungs, spleen, liver) 3 days after IV injection in the MCAO rat. Once in the circulation, BMSCs also produced rapid alterations in …
