The Birth Of Mass Media: Printmaking In Early Modern Europe, Alison Stewart Jan 2013

The Birth Of Mass Media: Printmaking In Early Modern Europe, Alison Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

In the digital age, when images and films can be streamed with lightning speed onto computers at the press of a button, it is hard to fathom the society-altering impact the new printed image had when it first appeared in Europe around 1400. The introduction of printed images or repeatable pictorial statements irrevocably changed the practice of manually producing images one by one, by making them available in identical form, as multiple examples printed onto paper, a material that was newly available in Europe. Such multiples appeared first as independent images, then as book illustrations, but either way, this process …

Evaluation Of A New Chemistry For Rangeland Grasshopper Control, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Karla Jenkins, Sean Doyle Whipple Whipple, Rick Patrick Jan 2013

Evaluation Of A New Chemistry For Rangeland Grasshopper Control, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Karla Jenkins, Sean Doyle Whipple Whipple, Rick Patrick

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A grasshopper control study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a new class of systemic chemical. The new pesticide Prevathon® (high and low levels) was compared to Coragen®, Dimilin®, and a nontreated check. Grasshoppers were numerically reduced the most by Coragen and Prevathon, though not significant. The highest level of Prevathon did not numerically impact beneficial insects in general. Biomass and forage quality were not significantly impacted by chemical treatment. However, forage biomass was numericallygreatest for the highest level of Prevathon. Prevathon appears to be an acceptable systemic pesticide for grasshopper control with minimal …

No Evidence For A Relationship Between Hemolymph Ecdysteroid Levels And Female Reproductive Behavior In Schizocosa Wolf Spiders, Reed M. Stubbendieck, Anthony J. Zera, Eileen A. Hebets Jan 2013

No Evidence For A Relationship Between Hemolymph Ecdysteroid Levels And Female Reproductive Behavior In Schizocosa Wolf Spiders, Reed M. Stubbendieck, Anthony J. Zera, Eileen A. Hebets

Eileen Hebets Publications

This study used radioimmunoassay (RIA) to explore the relationship between levels of hemolymph ecdysteroids and female reproductive behavior in Schizocosa wolf spiders. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between circulating ecdysteroid concentrations in females and 1) likelihood to copulate, or female receptivity [Experiment I— Schizocosa avida (Walckenaer 1837)], 2) time post copulation (Experiment 2— Schizocosa rovneri Uetz & Dondale 1979) and 3) exposure to conspecific male courtship (Experiment 3— Schizocosa uetzi Stratton 1997). In Experiment 1, we expected higher levels of circulating ecdysteroids in receptive versus unreceptive females, based upon prior research demonstrating an increase in receptivity following injections of 20-hydroexyedysone …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The beef industry has defined sustainability as meeting the growing demand for beef by balancing environmental responsibility, economic opportunity, and social diligence. Measuring sustainability is challenging, as the beef supply chain is one of the most complex food systems in the world. As the first and largest research project of this kind, this study represents an innovative approach toward creating a more sustainable beef product. Our objective is to establish a sustainability baseline (including environmental, economic, and social footprints) for the US beef industry by quantifying life cycle inputs and outputs for beef production over time.

Climate Change: What Does It Mean For Nebraska?, Martha D. Shulski, Natalie A. Umphlett, Tapan B. Pathak, Kenneth G. Hubbard

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Staff Publications

Because Nebraska’s location on the North American continent is far removed from large bodies of water, Nebraskans experience a strong continental type climate. As such, residents do not benefit from the moderating influence of the ocean, and temperatures can have wide swings from day to day and season to season. Typical characteristics for a continental climate at this latitude are large temperature variability with warm summers dominated by convective thunderstorms, and cold winters influenced by snow and wind from mid-latitude cyclones.

Dog Burials Associated With Human Burials In The West Indies During The Early Pre-Columbian Ceramic Age (500 Bc-600 Ad), Sandrine Grouard, Sophia Perdikaris, Karyne Debue

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Across the Caribbean, the widespread presence of canine remains at archaeological sites from the Saladoid period raises questions about the role of “man’s best friend.” Dog (Canis familiaris) remains have been found located in both refuse middens and burials adjacent to human graves in a number of sites in the French Antilles and Barbuda, West Indies. This paper will critically examine dog remains and discuss the varied duality of the dog’s role in the Saladoid world: from food source to lifelong companion. The importance of dogs within Amerindian sites from Saint Martin, the Guadeloupe archipelago, Martinique and Barbuda …

Identification Of Putative Origins Of Introduced Pigs In Indiana Using Nuclear Microsatellite Markers And Oral History, Joe N. Caudell, Blake E. Mccann, Robert A. Newman, Rebecca B. Simmons, Steven E. Backs, Brandon S. Schmit, Richard A. Sweitzer Jan 2013

Identification Of Putative Origins Of Introduced Pigs In Indiana Using Nuclear Microsatellite Markers And Oral History, Joe N. Caudell, Blake E. Mccann, Robert A. Newman, Rebecca B. Simmons, Steven E. Backs, Brandon S. Schmit, Richard A. Sweitzer

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Feral swine (Sus scrofa) have been introduced throughout North America from various global locations (Mayer and Brisbin 1991). In some cases, sources for feral swine are provided through historical records, but for many newly established populations, the origins of feral swine are not known. Understanding the origins and dispersal patterns of feral swine is an important management consideration, because of the introduction of diseases to new locations, for prosecution of individuals who have trans-ported feral swine across state lines, and for allocating swine removal efforts appropriately to address swine translocations within a state or a management area.

Brown-Headed Cowbird (Molothrus Ater) Response To Pyrotechnics And Lethal Removal In A Controlled Setting, Thomas W. Seamans, Bradley F. Blackwell, Travis L. Devault

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Pyrotechnics have long been used to frighten birds from specific areas but birds might ha-bituate to them. Anecdotal and limited published reports suggest that killing a flock member can reduce habituation. However, little behavioral work has been conducted in this area. We exposed brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) to noise from either 0.22 caliber blanks or 15-mm pyrotechnics in a series of controlled, cage experiments to determine if killing a flock member increased the time that cowbirds re-spond to pyrotechnics. Cowbirds responded no differently to pyrotechnics following the death of a flock member either before or after habituation to …

Prairie Dog Management And Conservation Benefits, Michael J. Bodenchuk, Thomas D. Halstead, Michael A. Yeary

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Prairie dog management has evolved over the decades and present control efforts are often directed at management zones in support of prairie dog or black-footed ferret conservation. The availability of prairie dog management tools has also evolved. We present the efficacy and practicality of specific methods and provide examples of the conservation benefits of prairie dog management. Potential conflicts between conservation efforts and regulatory efforts of multiple agencies are also discussed.

Initial Evidence For The Effectiveness Of Subsonic .308 Ammunition For Use In Wildlife Damage Management, Joe N. Caudell, Michael W. Courtney, Clinton T. Turnage

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

The resurgence in popularity of subsonic .30 caliber bullets in 300 Whisper and 300 Blackout has led to the development of bullets that will expand at subsonic velocities. The availability of these bullets has led to questions about the applicability of this caliber for wildlife damage management. We conducted a preliminary investigation to determine the potential of subsonic .30 caliber bullets to quickly incapacitate medium-sized game animals, such as white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and feral swine (Sus scrofa). We tested several bullets, including Lehigh Defense Maximum Expansion (LDME) bullets, reported to expand at 878 ft/s (268 …

Avian Survey Methods For Use On Airports, Bradley F. Blackwelll, Paige M. Schmidt, James A. Martin Jan 2013

Avian Survey Methods For Use On Airports, Bradley F. Blackwelll, Paige M. Schmidt, James A. Martin

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Management of wildlife, whether to mitigate damage, enhance safety, or effect conservation goals, requires identification of hazards posed by or to members of a particular species population or guild, and prioritization of management goals. We examined the special problem of managing birds to reduce hazards to aviation, particularly those species known to cause structural damage to aircraft when struck, as well as posing problems to airport facilities. Our objectives were to synthesize sampling theory and methods to provide airport biologists with 1) means to design and implement an avian survey on an airport that will maximize accuracy in quantifying avian …

Deer-Activated Bio-Acoustic Frightening Device Deters White-Tailed Deer, Scott Hygnstrom, Aaron M. Hildreth, Kurt C. Vercauteren Jan 2013

Deer-Activated Bio-Acoustic Frightening Device Deters White-Tailed Deer, Scott Hygnstrom, Aaron M. Hildreth, Kurt C. Vercauteren

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) damage urban and suburban plantings as well as crops and stored feed. Public demand for non-lethal control methods is high. Several frightening devices are available for deer, but problems exist with most, including: ease of application, cost, acclimation by animals, and public acceptance. Frightening devices that have the greatest likelihood of being effective incorporate mechanisms triggered by animal activation or bioacoustic alarm or distress calls. We tested the efficacy of a frightening device that played pre-recorded distress calls of adult female white-tailed deer when activated by an infrared motion sensor. Potential benefits of the …

Benefits Of Rhodamine B In Monitoring Mammal Populations, Taylor Fraychak

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

When used in non-lethal doses the biomarker Rhodamine B may offer distinct benefits in monitoring and studying animal populations. This orally delivered fluorescent dye has been shown to persist for several months in hair and can be detected by exposing fur samples to specific wavelengths of light. The dye has recently been used to determine consumption of baits for efforts such as vaccination and contraceptive administration. In a project being conducted on the Clemson University campus, Rhodamine B is being used as a biomarker to assess the effectiveness of DiazaCon™ as a contraceptive in gray squirrels. Future research with Rhodamine …

Operational Field Trial Of A Retrofitted Fence To Mitigate Deer-Vehicle Collisions, James H. Stickles, David A. Osborn, Karl V. Miller, Robert J. Warren

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) are a safety hazard and a significant financial burden for motorists. Ungulate-proof fencing used in combination with safe crossing structures have proven to be effective at mitigating DVCs. Although a 2.4-m fence has been the standard for ungulate-proof fencing, a 1.2-m fence with a 0.6-m outrigger angled at 45° away from the road and strung with high tensile wire may be a more cost-effective barrier. This design has the additional benefit of working as a one-way barrier, allowing deer to escape the highway if they should become trapped within the fenced right-of-way (ROW). The objective of this …

Water And Climate: Perceptions Of Nonmetropolitan Nebraskans, Rebecca Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph Cantrell, Bradley D. Lubben

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Water has always been an important resource to rural areas. Competing demands for water come from communities, households, agriculture, industry and the environment. After last summer’s drought, one of the worst in the state’s history, more attention was placed on water issues in the state. The drought also caused increased awareness of global climate change issues. Given these conditions, what impacts did rural Nebraskans experience as a result of last summer’s drought? What priority do rural Nebraskans place on various uses of water? Have those priorities changed over time? What do rural Nebraskans think about global climate change? What are …
